Add JavaScript Collapsible (show/hide text) Panel in Blogger Blog.

Although I've been using this collapsible panel widget for a long time now but never shared how to use or install it in your blogger blog. Recently it's installation method is requested from one of my readers via email.

JavaScript Collapsible Panel is one of the most useful widgets that I personally like. It saves a lot of space specially in lengthy posts. You can hide text under headings or hide HTML code inside show/hide panel.

It simply uses a JavaScript function to hide/show piece of text. You can use it in your blog posts, in a widget or any where in your blogger template.

First let me show you how it looks like.

Using the Hide/Show Collapsible Panel

Now wherever you wish to put a expand/collapse panel. Put the following piece of code.

And just change the "Clickable Title" and "Text to hide here..." with your custom heading and text.

If you're putting the code in a post and there are more than one collapsible panels in that same post, then don't forget to change the ID's (in green).

Like if you put second collapsible panel in the same post, change the ID by simply increasing one number to it, say, "subtopic0002", "subtopic0003" and so on.
It's not necessary that you assign numbers in ascending order - it is just for your convenience.

vozMe - Convert "Text to Speech" Online for Free!

Just open the site and write any text in the given text box, and create mp3 of the written text. You can off course listen to the text you written before downloading.

Create Static Pages (About/Contact/Advertise) in Blogger Blog

Usually people on Blogger are seen confused about creating static pages after they see them on wordpress blogs. In blogger there is no such option to create a separate static page other than simple post. You have to use this only option to create pages like , "About us", "Contact us", "Advertise" etc.

The only problem in creating these pages as a post, is that they start appearing on the home page just like regular posts of your blog. To overcome this you can do two things:

1. Create these pages as soon as you create your blog before starting proper blogging.
2. Or hide these type of pages from the main home page.

Almost all new bloggers (just like me :p) start blogging without understanding the need of these (About/Contact/Advertise etc) pages in the beginning and realize it later when they see these pages on almost all professional blogs.

Good News for Blogger users is that no matter how old is your blog you can also create these pages with ease and prevent them from appearing on your blog's main pages.

Follow the simple steps:

1. Create a new post and put all the text (or contact form's script) in the post's body.

2. Before publishing, click "Post Options" and Click "Don't Allow" under Comments to hide the comment form on this post.

3. Now change the date with some old date. You can leave the current date, month... just change the year to something before year 2000.
(e.g If current date is 4/12/09, change it to 4/12/99)

This trick buries the post in the bottom of all the posts you have. Blogger considers the post older and pushes it down in your posts list. (You may check it in "Edit Post" tab, after publishing)

4. Now check your blog, you'll notice see that this post, doesn't appear on home page.

5. Now go to "Edit Posts" and find this post (at the bottom) and copy the post's link

(You can do this by viewing the post or right click at "view" and select "copy link location")

6. Go to Layout -> edit HTML and find links that correspond at menu links on (top of) your blog, and modify them with the post's link you just copied.

How to Configure Windows Live Mail/Hotmail in Mozilla Thunderbird

If you're having trouble in setting up Windows Live Mail account in Mozilla Thunderbird 2, then here are the simple settings to follow:

1. Go to Tools -> Account Settings
2. Add Account -> Email account
3. Enter your name and in Email Address textbox, type your complete email address (including @live.com/@hotmail.com

4. Click Next and select "POP" and in Incoming Server,type:
pop3.live.com

5. Click Next, you'll see your user name in the text box, just add "@live.com" or "@hotmail.com in front of the user name you see.

6. Click Next -> Finish

You'll see Account Settings Window again. Select your account you just added from accounts list on left.

7. Click "Server Settings" (under your newly added account).
8. On the Right, under Security Settings, Choose "SSL" (by default "Never" is selected)

9. Now Click "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" from the left.

10. Click "Add" to add a new server.

11. Enter following information in the pop up window that appears:

Desciption: [Type Anything] (usually server name; like "Live Mail SMTP")
Server Name: smtp.live.com
Port: 587

Check "Use name and password"
User Name: [Type your complete email address here, including @live.com or @hotmail.com]
Use Secure Connection : Choose "TLS, if available"

12. Click OK to save SMTP settings

13. And OK again to close Account Settings.

How to Add "Read More" in Blogger Blog [Quick Method]

What is "Read More"?

You can choose to display a selective amount of text from the beginning of each post as a teaser instead of showing the entire post on the home page of your blog and when a reader wants to read the rest of the post, a simple click on "Read more..." link, can reveal the entire post.
This is very handy if you have lots of long articles page and you want to show maximum of them on homepage.

Before Google launched this feature with new Post Editor, it was a tricky method which required some HTML editing to add "read more" functionality. "After the Jump" is the name which Blogger gave to this feature which lets you create same expandable post summaries in your blog posts.

Now creating jump breaks in your blog posts can be easily done right from the post editor, without the need for any HTML changes.

So what's the Quick Method to add "Read More"?

First, you have to upgrade your current Post Editor to new "Updated Editor", to do so;

1. Login to your blogger account
2. Go to Settings.
3. Go down to the page.
4. Under "Select Post Editor", choose "Updated Editor".
5. Save the Settings.

Now create a new post and decide where in the post you want to create the jump break, and place your cursor in that position and simply press "Insert Jump Break" from the toolbar.

You'll see a gray horizontal line after adding jump break...That's it!

What if I don't want to upgrade to "Updated Post Editor"?

If you like to use same old post editor, then you can still use this new and simple "Read More »" functionality to your posts.

For this you have to add the following to your template:

1. Go to your Blog's Layout> Edit HTML.
2. Check "Expand Widget Templates"
3. Find

or
<p><data:post.body></p>

4. And just BELOW it place the following code.

5. Save the Template.

Now Create a new post, as you're still on old post editor you won't find "Insert Jump Break" button in your post editor toolbar. You have to manually add Read More in your Post.

Go to "Edit HTML" tab while writing your post and write

...where ever you want to put "Read More »" in your published post.

How to Change text "Read More»"?

If you feel like changing the "Read More" text to your own custom phrase, you can easily do this from the
Layout > Page Elements tab.

Click Edit on the Blog Post widget, and then change the Post page link text to whatever you'd like.
