Encoding, editing of x264 mkv movies using Megui, mkvmerge

This is my guide to encoding of small size x264 mkv movies. Everyday I gets alot of pm's about how do i encode small 300mb movies, so I decided to make a guide about it and have tried to keep it as simple as I could. You can circulate this guide but if you do then plz give some credit to me: coolvinay@wbb.

This guide is splitted into following parts:
1.) Setting up Encoder.
2.) Encoding.
3.) Editing of Output file

1.) Setting up Encoder

You Must Have Following 5 Files First
(a) Megui.

After downloading the above files follow these steps :-
1. Install Megui, Avisynth and Mkvtoolnix.
2. Copy all 3 Nero AAC files to the Megui directory
By Default - "C:\Program Files\megui"
3. Run Megui and update it.

4. Close Megui.
5. Copy the "allprofiles" folder and paste it in Megui directory
By Default - "C:\Program Files\megui". Replace the allprofiles folder with new one.
6. Now run Megui and we are ready to encode some movies.

2.) Encoding
1. Run Megui and click file-->open and browse to the source video file.
2. Wait few seconds and then avisynth will open with video previewer (see images below).

3. Enter the desired output resolution (must be mod 16)*
*mod 16 resolution - Both height and width pixels must be completely divisible be 16. Example - Here 720x352 resolution is used and 720/16 gives remainder as 0 and also 352/16 gives rem. 0 so that means it's a mod 16 resolution.
4. You can crop screen if u see black borders (in our case we don't need it).
5. Click Save and you will be returned back to megui.

6. In video section select one video profile. For best result use "x264: HQ-Slow" or "x264: Unresteicted 2pass HQ".
7. Select file format as MKV.
8. In audio section select audio profile"Nero AAC: NDAAC-HE-64kbs".

9. Click config and check the "adaptive bitrate" and set it to @35kbps. You can also use 40kbps but 35kbps works fine for me.

10. Click "Auto Encode" and a new window will apppear.
11. Select conatiner as "MKV" and enter "average bitrate" as per the desired output file size (Remember 30minutes = 100mb). When done click "Queue".
12. Now click "Queue" tab at top of the encoder and click start.

13. Now comes the most difficult part which is to wait . Encoding process has now begun so be patient. Time taken in encoding depends on many factors such as your pc's config., source's resolution, output file's resolution, o/p file size etc. On my pc a normal dvdrip takes an average time of 4-5 hours.

3.) Editing
TO EDIT MKV FILES I USE MKVMERGE.
In this section I will tell you how to:-
(a) Add or remove subtitles.
(b) Making samples/splitting a file.
(c) Join files.
(d) How to sync. an mkv file.
but before that run mkvmerge.

(a) Add or remove subtitles.

Adding
1. Click "add" button to add a video file.
2. Now simply drag the subtitle file to the "tracks" box in mkvmerge or click the add button to add sutitle file.
3. Select output folder.
4. Click "start muxing".

Removing
1. Add your file.
2. Uncheck the subtitle file from the "tracks" box.
3. Select output folder.
4. Click "start muxing".

(b) Making samples/splitting a file

1. Add the file that you want to split.
2. Now click "Global" tab at the top of the mkvmerge.
3. Tick the "enable splitting" option and choose the way* you want to split it.
*Take the cursor above each box for more info about it.

(c) Join files
Now if you want to join two or more splitted files into a single file then add the first part of file and then click "append" to add 2nd part and so on you can append a no. of files. Select o/p folder and click "start muxung".

(d) How to sync. an mkv file.
One common problem that arises after encoding a movie is that sometimes we gets file at output which is a bit out of sync. So, we can make it in sync using mkvmerge.

Suppose that in our movie the sound is lagging beind video with duration 300ms. Then,
1. Add your file.
2. In "track" box click on video file and then "Format specific options". In "Delay (in ms)" enter 150.

3. Now in "track" box click on audio file and then "Format specific options". In "Delay (in ms)" enter -150.

4. Select o/p folder and click"start muxing"

Similarly, if video is lagging behind audio then in that case we would use -ve value for video file and +ve value for audio file.

Can’t Unhide Folders After Virus Infection?

Have you ever been frustrated by hidden folders after virus infection? You can see them in some programs like Directory Opus or Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options… > View > select Show hidden files and folders and unchecked Hide protected operating system files (Recommended), but you can’t change the hidden attribute though how hard you try using right click > property > uncheck Hidden. This is because the virus made your folders to super hidden and changed the attribute to system folders which then trying normal unhide method will not work!

What you have to do is using Windows Command Prompt (cmd)

> Click start > run > type: “cmd” > Enter then type the command:

on cmd command type your problematic drive letter eg. E: then enter – you will get this E:\> then type attrib -a -s -r -h /s /d then press Enter again and wait for a few seconds; now all your hidden folders in that drive E will be unhidden.

This is how it works:
E:\>attrib -a -s -r -h /s /d

Notice that:
attrib -a -s -r -h /s /d (To show hidden files)
attrib -a -s -r -h /s /d (To hide files)

I have been busy over the last few weeks having set up 3 pc's for 3 people I know. All 3 actually sat with me and picked what they wanted themselves....all 3 machines varied from price but each picked products very similar from what I would of chosen for them myself but they did very well indeed.

All it takes is a little time and patience to sit down and actually look up these parts for yourself...the main part is putting it all together ...which of course that was down to me. 2 of the machines were overlocked and prime stable both @ 3.4Ghz and those were the lowest spec and the highest spec of the bunch. It's not all about how good they overclock it's about how good each part works together and a well thought out machine will be good enough for anyone.

Yes you can go extreme but that would be too uber and would cost an arm & leg that's just down to the individual who has a bottomless pocket who just likes to spend silly without thinking 1st.
Anyway here are the 3 machines I put together over the last few weeks.

Ps. I forgot to say these prices were also cheaper when I bought them ...so sometimes it's a good time to wait and see if prices go down...but then it's how quick the user actually wants the pc.

Hmm, I have a slight improvement on your first build, if you wanna read over it. Instead of the 9600GT, the user should consider the 8800GT.

8800GT: ~$110
For approximately 10-15 dollars more, you can get an improvement of roughly 10 FPS. That is a WHOLE lot in gaming.

I've been a proud owner of the 8800GT, by EVGA, XFX, and ChainTech. All three of mine have had no issues, and all of them can be overclocked easily, and it really improves FPS. Using 80% Fan Speed, I have gotten the Core from 695 *ChainTech* to 705*XFX*. Memory at: 1010*ChainTech* to 1025 *XFX* using Air Cooling.
Understand Prices are in USD. Also, note the 8800GT is a Popular card, and is often Out of Stock in may stores, including online.

A: I'll give a go at explaining, thou not that good at doing such.
I'll use the 1st build as an example.

[*]First item on the list is the Intel E5200 CPU (Central processing Unit) This does all the computing in a computer. It executes programs, and carries out instructions that it is given.
[*]The second item is the PSU(Power Supply Unit) It gives power to the entire computer. The term "Modular" means that unnecessary cables can be taken out, so its easier to manage inside the PC (Also for cosmetic appearence for see-throu cases)
[*]The thrid component is the Motherboard. This is what everything goes into. The motherboard carries all the ram, the CPU, GPU, etc. It provides ways of communication between all the components.
[*]Fourth is the HDD(Hard Drive Disk). This contains the OS(Operating System). This is what stores all the data that you have on your computer. From Music, to games, pictures, software, everything that's on windows/linux right now.
[*]Fifth is the Case, bascially, the Motherboard goes in here, and it holds everything. Some come with PSU's, but this one does not.
[*]Sixth we have the RAM(Random Access Memory). This is memory used by the PC to load programs, and temporarily store/manipulate data.
[*]Last on that list we have the DVD-R drive. This basically reads data stored on DVD's. The -R states that it can also write data onto blank DVD's.
Then we have an important choice of GPU's, which allow you to play games/watch movies. Some motherboards come with on-board GPU's, but they aren't as powerful as nVidia/ATi GPU's.

Remote Upload from anywhere to Megaupload

It is possible to upload from RS and NL to MU. It just involves cookies. Megaupload premium allows you to enter site cookies into their system.
So all you have to do is put the link into MU and it downloads it to their server and gives you a link.
Here is the cookie page on MU:

Now, to get the cookies required for the sites. YOU MUST HAVE FIREFOX FOR THIS TO WORK!
Go to either Netload.in or Rapidshare.com and type the following into the browser.

Revealed: The $100k Blogging Formula

I've crossed the $100k mark, after only a year and a half of serious online work, and the DP community has helped me to do it. Now I want to give back by providing all of you with the method. I believe that this won't hurt my business, as there are more than enough niches out there for all of us.

1 - Create an obscure subdomain of a site you already own (no need to spend money). Make the name very hard to guess (like "gghhsstrte33vcvcst16.yourdomain.com"
2 - Create a robots.txt to prevent the secret domain from being indexed by any search engines.
3- Get a PLR article pack, with at least 1000 articles spread across 10 or more niches.
4- Get a PLR Spinner app (Google it, they all do the same thing really) and spin them all.
5- Install Wordpress on your secret site (mentioned in step 1)
6- Create categories for all of your niches
7- Add the spun articles to each category
8- create 10 subdomains (one for each niche) and name them for that niche. (i.e. Book-lovers.yourdomain.com, Car-enthusiast-blog.yourdomain.com)
9- Install Wordpress on all of these and customize them as you see fit.
10- Install the FeedWordPress plugin to each, and set it to grab only 1 article at a time, once per day, and to link the posts to the local site (not the source site)
11- Install the WP-Autotagger plugin to each
12- Install any signature plugin (to add a backlink to your blog within each post) and set it to add the signature by default
13- Add your niche blogs to all major search engines
14- Pay a small fee to add your niche blogs to at leas 1 PR4 directory each
15- Find a copy of RSSAnnouncer to add your niche blog RSS feeds to the major RSS directories
16- Monetize your niche blogs (Adsense, Kontera, etc)
17- install a keyword context link plugin (to link certain keywords automatically to affiliate sites of your choice)
18- Get headshots of attractive people from any royalty-free source
19- Setup a twitter account for each blog and add one of the headshots obtained in step 18 to each
20- Install the twitter plugin to each blog and set it to update the twitter account associated to the niche blog
21- Sit back and watch the money flow in.
22- Every couple of months add more PLR articles to the appropriate categories of your hidden blog.
23- Every month log into each twitter account and follow at least 100 new people (there will probably be an application available within the next year to do this automatically)

I hope this helps all of you make lots of money with blogs. As I said, there are enough niches out there that I feel perfectly comfortable sharing this info.

I was always coming to check those links to my site manually every other month just to see that it was so s*cking hard! Here I am sharing with tools to help do this auto backlinks checking a heck of avoiding the troublesome:

Also if you're using Google analytics on your site you can go to webmaster tools and find the link checker option. This one is extremely useful because it shows you how many backlinks google is tracking - it's always fewer than will show in yahoo. Yahoo includes things like nofollow backlinks that Google ignores so the results will always be higher than your "real" links according to Google.
Of course, if you dont' want Google to know what you're up to with a site, you probably don't want to use analytics.

All You Need To Know About Wordpress Autoblog

I have a few autoblogs...because I like them. I have one that I set up one day and have done no promotion with. It auto posts articles and youtube videos and I am steadily increasing in organic traffic each month. It's been up for about 4 months and now up to 200 uniques a day. Not bad for no promotion whatsoever. So I thought I'd let ya'll know what I use for plugins and you can add your better ones and even better theme. I get clicks daily and I'm not even using a adsense optimized theme [I want my blogs to look natural enough and not clouded to the extreme with adsense] so i'm sure you guys can do better. I'm averaging 50c-$1 a day per blog after about 2 months of letting them sit so I'm sure you can get better if you start promoting right away.

I use the unique article wizard plugin for posting articles, but for more obscure niches, you are going to want a different autoposter as this I have noticed is only best for popular/broad niches. I use the wpyoutube plugin [the free version as each blog is a mix, and not strictly a video blog] to post youtube videos automatically. I use the Platinum SEO plugin and load my keywords that I pruned from Keyword Elite into it along with a keyword rich title and description. I use the YPN-Adsense plugin to automatically add adsense to my posts in random spots so the people do not become ad blind to my ads.

On some of my blogs I use more plugins while on others these are the only ones I use. I don't show ads on my homepages for any of these blogs and I still get clicks within the posts. Perhaps I would get more if I put them on my homepage, but again, I like to keep the blogs halfway decent like so people stay on them longer.

I do no promotion whatsoever with these blogs. I don't even put their links in my sigs or do bookmarkings...nothing. I have it now where I can set up one of these blogs in an hour or less and forget about them. Autoblogs are great for adsense earnings because they do all the work for you once you put the initial effort in. $30/month per blog is not bad either for no promotion.

Just thought I'd let some of those people having trouble with 'direction' for their autoblogs.

Here is step-by-step to run auto blog Wordpress

While I am setting up my blogs, I have keyword elite gather the keywords for me, but you can use the google keyword tool or any other free tool to generate keywords if you prefer.

Since you already have a hosting, if you have Fantastico, you can automatically install wordpress with it. I use domains that have the keyword[s] I am targeting in it and try to keep it at two to three words [if I'm using the word 'the' or 'a' or something small like that].

Then install wordpress on it.

Install the minimum plugins. The link to the ones I mentioned is here:

I have not updated the folder with the new versions, but in the new wp, you can do that automatically]. If your niche is really obscure, you may try the caffinated content plugin, or another autoposting plugin. Any plugin that will post content related to your niche.

Activate them, update them - ones included in the archive above. Now show-time:

Go to the Manage--> Categories link.
Add keyword rich categories. At least the broad ones and then more narrow.
Then go to the UAW plugin under the Settings link.
Enter the required information [self explanatory that page should be]. When it tells you which categories to select, select all the ones that you added. Do NOT select uncategorized as you will then be getting posts that are not at all related to your niche. Click on update and test and it will tell you if it was able to make a post. [You can delete that test post if it is success too].
Then go to the Adsense plugin and add your info there [again self explanatory] and save. I use 2 units per post, but you can select 3 if you like. I also only use the smaller ad units, but again you can choose as you prefer].
Then go to Manage --> WP Videotube and add the keywords you want the videos to be related to. The free version allows you to add 3 keywords and at what intervals you want them to post. I usually space it out between keywords. I put one at every 8 hrs, one at every 10, and one at every 12 hours and I humanize it.
Find a free theme related to your niche and upload it to your sever and activate it. Click on widgets in your admin panel and make sure that you have your tag cloud, recent posts, and categories in the very least showing in your side bar.
Gather your keyword list that you generated and load it into the Platinum SEO plugin. Add the title and description as well. Save.

Completed. Move on to the next blog. And/Or promote that one for more traffic.

Writing articles directly from your blog default web interface is not always a pleasant task, especially when you want to put more formatting and pictures to the article. Professional bloggers prefer desktop editors because they can speed up the blogging process, easily manage blog posts and settings, and many extra functions.

Here is a list of common features for desktop blog editors:

w.bloggar is a professional blog editor for advanced users. It has a lot more advanced features built-in than Live Writer.

With w.bloggar you can save posts locally for further publishing, import text files, post to many blogs and ping to Weblogs.Com, blo.gs, Technorati and ping-o-matic. There is also a portable version so that you can take with your anywhere on a USB drive.

5. Qumama

Qumana has a very simple and user friendly interface with the left side bar lists all your blogs and the main pane lists the recent posts of the selected blog. The pane below it displays the content of the selected post.

To ceate new post, clicking on ‘New post’ and the post editor will be opened in a new window. The post editor has common formatting options and also lets you configure some post settings, like aloowing comments or tracbacks.

x264 TV Encoding & m-HD Encoding Guide

x264 TV Encoding

Before you say anything I don't care if it's spelled x264 or h.264, so save it!
You've seen this format popping up more and more recently. The m-HD encodings like amazing for the smaller resolution and size, and the tv episodes still look good even when reduced down to 100-200mb. So then you get an idea in your head and you like the idea of getting in on the action.

Well there are some things you need to know first:

People are still getting used to this format and many are more than willing to download a 350mb avi episode that they know will be fine than a 100-200mb mkv episode that they aren't completely sold on.
There are not a lot of guides. Very few, in fact, for episode encoding. I'll give you a few in this guide down the page.
Very few people who know how to use this format will tell you how to do it. They'll help you a bit but they probably won't hold your hand. They live by a code of annoying silence.
Encoding in mkv can take a while and a lot of system resources. For a full episode, depending on your hardware and settings it can take between an hour to two hours.

I have also asked around, searching for tips, but more than willing to go through trial and error to find what works best for me, but few would offer any. After months of trial and error I still haven't gotten them just right enough and I know that they could be better with some help. I can probably give you some good starting advice though.

Now let's get to the actual guide, shall we?

Encoding
If it asks you to download something at any point during this guide then do it!

Start Staxrip
The Staxrip icon should be on your desktop. When you click it you will see this, without the marks of course:

1) Double clicking this area will bring up a menu asking you which video you want to encode.
2) Double clicking this area after the source file is loaded will allow you to save the file in a different location.
3) These are resizing options and other features. I'll get more indepth later.
4) This one is kind of obvious.
5) This will allow you to configure the encode. I'll get more indepth about that later.
6) After you load the video the audio will appear here. You can edit its bitrate which will be explained more later.
7) Pretty self explanatory. No need to worry about it in my guide really.
8) Once you edit your codec configuration more options will be added to this area. That will be better explained later.

For this example I will be using a Japanese tv show episode. By double clicking in the source box it will bring up this menu:

As a tip you might want to put the video in its own file.
For this guide you will only need to use Single Or Merge. After you click that then you need to select the episode you want to encode. After you select it there will be a brief pause it will open up a window:

This should take a few minutes depending on the length of the video. The reason why I told you to put it in its own folder is because this process extracts everything and makes a little mess. After that is finished it should look like this:

Setting It Up
It doesn't need to be done in this order but it's how I do it:

1) In the Filters area I right click on Noise and select low. Then I right click on Resize and click very sharp. Regular sharp can do the trick as well.
2) In the Audio area I click on AAC 50-90kbps and click on Edit. It should bring up this window:

The only thing you need to worry about is Bitrate. Set that somewhere between 40-50 then click Ok. I usually set it on 40.
3) I then click on Codec Configuration which looks like this:

In the Mode drop down menu select three pass and click Ok. This takes longer but usually looks better. If you don't want the added time then select Two Pass.
4) This will open up two boxes called Size and Video Bitrate. With Rapidshare's 200mb limit that is the best size to put it at but you can go lower if you want. The lower you go the lower your bitrate and quality will drop though. If you tried to do the same thing with AVI you would end up with a blocky mess of a video.
5) This is abolutely optional but it's usually a good idea to click Run Compressibility Check after you set the size you want. This can take up to 10 minutes to complete but it will automatically adjust your resolution according to your size and bitrate which will make it look better. Again, this is optional if you don't want to take the extra time.
6) After that you are all done. Click the Next button a few times and when the menu pops up walk away. Encoding takes time, sometimes a lot of time, depending on your hardware. For me a tv episode will take an hour to finish on a Two Pass and two hours to finish on a Three Pass. Either way, I'm sure you don't want to wait around so go play a console or see what the big deal is about that fresh air and sunlight people keep talking about.

Ending Notes
After the encode is done CHECK ON IT before you upload it. Sometimes you might get some sound problems but it happens rarely. Check Taurgis's guide to learn how to fix it.

Please note that I'm in no way a master at this. I've learned what I could through trial and error and some guides over the last four or five months. I have no doubt that someone else who has been doing this longer has much better ways to do it. Getting that someone to tell you those better ways is the tricky part.

The cold hard facts is that there are a lot of people who encode for the attention they get. They don't want to lose that attention to someone else, namely you, by giving you advice. Not everyone is that way but more are than aren't. If you want to perfect it, or think you can do better, then I think that's great.

Just don't be greedy and keep it a secret if you do find a way to improve. So many people who use this format say it is the format of the future for videos, but at the same time not many are willing to teach people how to use the format properly. It's kind of pathetic.

m-HD Encoding Guide

Ok then, let's get down to the stuff you need to know first. This is slightly different then my first guide so pay attention:

m-HD encoding is the hot new thing right now. Unlike tv episode encodes, m-HD encodes are very popular!
Even less than before, don't count on getting much help at all. The people who do these encodes are really proud of the attention they get. They will not sacrifice that attention to help you out. That doesn't apply to everyone, but go ahead and try to get some good help from one of the m-HD encoders. Chances are they won't offer much. hdtv-fan is excluded from this.
I am offering this guide to people in the simplest form because I don't believe information that benefits people should be kept within a small group of people. I learned this stuff myself for months so you won't have to go through the same problems I did.
As I mentioned before, I am in no way a master at this. There are very likely a lot of things I am doing wrong that could be done better. If you see what is being done wrong then please inform me. You'll be the only person who has given me advice on m-HD encoding, except for hdtv-fan, so far.
m-HD encoding can take a hell of a lot of time. Encoding HD movies takes a lot longer than encoding tv shows, due to the extra length and resolution size. There is an exception with HD tv shows, which I encode personally.
Encoding m-HD movies is all about speed. The person who gets it out first is going to get the most comments and views even if your version looks better. It sucks but that's how it is.

Setting Up MeGUI
Before we begin, you must start MeGUI and update everything when it asks. When a menu pops up asking you to click through a long list then do it. Restart when it prompts. Now we can begin.
1) Everything may look a bit confusing at first but don't worry, I'll walk you through it.
2) Click on File at the upper left corner then press Open and browse to the folder that contains the HD video you want to encode. For testing purposes I recommend you use a trailer from GameTrailers or something for practice. If you don't see your video then click the box next to the file name and select All Files to reveal the video. Double click to open it up.
3) It might take a few seconds to load but when it does it will bring up the AviSynth Script Creator and the video. You can close the video for now but keep the creator open. If you have any experience with encoding videos the creator should look familiar.
4) Click on the Input DAR box and select 16:9. If Auto Crop is currently checked then uncheck it.
5) If Suggest Resolution is checked then uncheck it and make sure Resize is checked.
6) The resolution really depends upon whether or not you want your encode to be anamorphic, which not only increases detail but gets rid of those useless black bars above and below the video. hdtv-fan gave an explanation on how to do this. Simply put, if your resolution is one size, you change the resolution to the other size:

1280x528 = 720x352
1280x544 = 720x(~)362
1280x688 = 720x(~)458

7) The easiest way to determine the resolution is to take a screenshot of the video or check its information. All this can be done through most media players. Once you determine the size click on the Filters bar.
8) You can analyze the video but that will take a while. Change the Source Type to Progressive, the Resize Filter to Spline36, and the Noise Filter to Minimal. Damn that's a lot of blue.
9) For this one you will need asharp and awarpsharp. These are the plugins I use. You can find them here: http://avisynth.org/warpenterprises/

10) If you had read one of the guides like I had strongly suggested, you would know what AviSynth is. Extract the plugins to the AviSynth plugin folder.
11) Click the three dots at the bottom right corner and select both of the dll. Click the save button and save it somewhere besides the original location if it's already in mkv format or just rename it. You might overwrite stuff later if you're not careful and not only be forced to redownload the entire movie but also encode everything else as well.
12) Now that's your back at the main page things will look even more confusing. Beside File Format select MKV
13) I've already done this part for you as well. Beside Encoder Settings you need to select the proper one, but there is a large selection. In most cases 2-Pass HQ will do the job, but I've prepared one for you:

14) To iimport this click on File and Import Presets and select the rar you just downloaded. Look through that menu again, you'll know which one is mine. I made this preset using a couple of guides. It is in no way perfect and there are probably some things that could be changed but so far it has worked out just fine for me:

15) Read 10h30's guide above to get a good idea of what you should do with the audio. Do you see why I tell you to read them? Saves me loads of time. I can't offer you much advice about the audio since my choices usually change with each video. Just check out 10h30's guide.
16) The next part is extremely simple. Click on Auto Encode at the bottom right side of the screen. Then beside Container select MKV again and adjust the size you want. The lower it is the lower the bitrate and the worse your video will look. I usually try to keep it between a Bitrate of 1500-1800.
17) After you sort that out click Queue and it will take you back to the main menu. From there select the Queue tab at the top and you will notice everything is ready to go. Click start to begin. If it asks you to create a worker or something say yes.
18) Give yourself a pat on the back. You're pretty much done. The encode will take some time so you should probably go off and do something. This is nowhere near as hard as it looks and it becomes effortless after your first couple of times. On Vista I noticed that MeGUI will present some sound problems. That shouldn't be a problem if you read the guide I mentioned before.

And this is my guide. Anyone should be able to follow it easily. For the last time, I'm not a master at this. Don't mock me if I did something wrong or pointless I'll just insult you. I hope this guide helped a lot of you and it wasn't difficult to follow. Everything that I mentioned is what I do to encode my m-HD tv episodes, anime, and movies. The selections criteria are based on following parameter. The main factor of popularity was based on the traffic site receives (Alexa Ranking has been used to determine it). The second factor for popularity was number of sites that are linking in (Yahoo inbound links has been used to determine it). Also average number of peers has been taken into consideration for tracker sites that made into the list.

Blogger has long introduced the ‘Star-Rating’ widget to accessorize our blog post. Anyway, some have problem customizing the background and text of this star-rating widget which resulted in giving up this beautiful mean of user friendly feature.

In fact, changing star-rating widget background and text is just easy:

Blogumus is an animated tag cloud widget for Blogger powered blogs, which has proven to be the most popular widget ever published on this site.

Most bloggers have been able to install this flash-based widget successfully using the default installation instructions. However, for those using long label names or who have many JavaScript/Flash based widgets present in their blog layout, there seems to be a "blank widget" issue where Blogumus is present but will not display the animated tags.

Thanks to some helpful insights from Roy Tanck (the original author of Cumulus on which this widget is based), I've been able to construct an alternative method for installation which embeds Blogumus as a flash object rather than relying on JavaScript.

If you have experienced problems in displaying Blogumus in your Blogger template, this alternative method for installation should enable Blogumus to display correctly for you.

How to install Blogumus using this alternative method

This method of installation is very similar to the original one.

Firstly, go to Layout>Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard. Do not check the "Expand widget templates" box as this would complicate the process!

Using your browser's search function, find this line in your template code:

The height is 200px
Background color is white

Change height and width

Both of these options can be configured in the following line:

This six character tag is actually a hex value without the preceeding # symbol. You can alter this to be any hex color code you prefer.

great design is an important part of branding and promoting a blog.
Content may be king however the first bite is still with the eye and
the logo is the first thing many visitors look at when they visit a
site for the first time, whether they realise it or not. Be it an
emblem, picture, icon, sign or symbol, a great logo makes it easy for
visitors to immediately recognise your blog. The logo is also usually
used on banners, business cards, videos and other media too and is
therefore a vital part of promoting your blog.

Designers have a fantastic eye for detail and most are able to tell
why a logo is great or not. Unfortunately I am not a great designer
however I can immediately tell if I like a logo or not. As the famous
saying goes I don’t know much about art but I know what I like!

Which is why I thought it would be good to post what I consider to
be some of the best blog logos on the web. I hope these logos inspire
designers and I hope that it helps bloggers who are getting a logo
designed point their designer in the right direction. Enjoy
