"The 404 or Not Found error message is a HTTP standard response code indicating that the client was able to communicate with the server, but the server could not find what was requested." In simple words the page that will be displayed when the actual page is not found is called a 404 Error Page. Till now Blogger’s error page was a plain old design with more of orange in it and was not customizable. Now Blogger Error pages use the same template . This would help template designers in making up custom 404 Pages.This tutorial will help you in setting up a Custom 404 page for your Blog.

By Default, your Blogger Error page will display this error message

You can Change this message to something else from the Blogger Settings.
The option is there at Settings > Search preferences > Custom Page not Found

If you want more than just a message, then we will have to fill up this text area with some HTML Code.. This is how my Error page Looks like

Instructions

Login to your Blogger account and go to the Template page and proceed to Edit HTML
Click on the Expand Widget Templates Check box so that your entire template comes up

Now Look for </head> and immediately before that paste this snippet

This code snippet will reset the default styling given to the Blogger Message Wrapper.

Save the template and go to a page on your blog which doesn’t exist.
You should be able to see the change now. The grey background and the border around the 404 status message would no longer be there.

Now Let’s see how we can improve the look and feel of our 404 page. I would suggest you to use inline CSS styles to improve the look and Feel of your 404 message.Here is a sample HTML template which you can paste into the text box at Search preferences > Custom Page not Found.

Detecting an Error Page

Blogger has introduced a new page type called "error_page" and you can detect it using b:if conditional tags.
The following condition checks if a page is an error page or not.

After i write some SEO blogging tricks in my previous blog posts, i think it's time to discuss few common SEO (search engine optimization) little mistakes . This few wrong SEO tricks will down the visibility of your blog in search engine result page. Because, by doing the right SEO, will increase Google page rank and increase traffic to your blog/website. So you must avoid these SEO mistakes to make descent traffic to your blog or website.

This are some SEO tricks that will make your site fall down from SERP :

1. Hiding content inside images

Some webmasters used to display their content inside the images. Search engines will not be able to read the content inside images.

2. Use excessive Java Script/AJAX

Search Engines can’t understand JavaScript/Ajax. So chance to getting index is less with excessive number of Java script/AJAX. Use HTML/CSS instead of Java/AJAX.

3. Use Flash only websites

Even though the Flash can make an exciting blog, search engines can’t read the content inside the flash. You can make up your blog by flash scripts but never add your content inside the flash scripts. Use HTML instead of flash.

4. Usage of Search engine friendly URLs rather than human friendly URLs.

Don’t use unrelated URLs. Use appropriate URL which can describe your content. Don’t worry about the length of the URL

5. Use automated directory submission software

Never use automated software for directory submission. They will consider them as spams. Your blog will get banned from those directories. Use manual submission as an alternative. Submit to well-established directories by using unique Titles and Descriptions. Then they will not consider as copies.

6. Link exchange programs

This is a time wasting program. No value. You will get nothing. Other thing is your link will be removed after few days without informing you. I did this for this blog and got nothing.

7. Use the same meta title and meta description in every page of the blog

Once you use same title and Meta descriptions for all the posts the search engines will consider all the posts as one post. Then your whole site will not index. So use different Meta tags for different posts. But never use inappropriate Meta descriptions. Place key words inside the content.

8. Use unnecessary key words and usage of excessive key words

Use less competitive keywords rather than using high competitive key words. Then you can get instant traffic from search engines. Use Google Adword key word tool to find appropriate key words

9. Usage of wrong key words

Your key words should match with your content. Key words should summarize the content of your article.

10. Copying someone else’s content and paste it on your site

Never do this, because your site will be penalized by search engines. If you blogging on blogger they will ban your blog as well

11. Poor quality content

Your content should be high in quality. Low quality and duplicated content is penalizing by search engines and you will get nothing by just posting that type of content.

12. Poor site navigation

Your content should be prominent rather than your ads. Pop-up windows should be avoided. Your navigation bar should give links to relevant content

13. Irrelevant links

The links on your site should related to your content and those links should lead to the relevant page

14. Expectation of quick results

SEO is not a quick way to increase traffic to your blog. You need to be patience in order to get results. Sometimes it takes weeks to months to get the desired effect. So you should have sustained motivation to work on SEO.

15. High loading time of the page

Visitors don’t like to waste their time. So you must consider a good hosting plan to improve the loading time of your blog or website.

Keep Your Adsense Account Safe from Getting Disabled

What is Google Adsense Program?
Google Adsense is a Popular Web Advertising Program that provides a good income source for many websites.Anyone can earn through Adsense, but in a right way. If you follow the wrong ways [Fraudulent Activities], your account will be in great danger and also Google may penalize you [Account Ban]. So, here are the common mistakes that violate Google Adsense TOS.

Never click your own adsense ads or get them clicked for whatever reason. Never use automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Google is very smart to detect fraudulent clicks. This is a very popular mistake everyone doing these days.

Tip: If you want to preview your ads without your impressions or clicks being recorded, Use Google Adsense Preview Tool.
Never change the Adsense code. There is no need of altering the code. If you do so, Google easily knows about it and bans your account.

Tip: You can change the color and size of your ads in the adsense account itself. After Modifying, Just copy the code and paste it in your site.
Number of Adsense Ad Units to be placed in your website is not more than 3 Text/Image ads, 3 Link Ads and 2 Search Boxes.

Tip: This will not make your account banned. Even if you place more ads, they will be hided.
You can run competitive contextual text ad or search services on the same site which offer Google Adsense competition in their field. But, they should not resemble Adsense ads.

Tip: Place the other Publisher ads beneath Google Ads. Best is that always Adsense ads will be on top.
Do not disclose confidential information about your account like the CTR, CPM and income derived via individual ad units or any other confidential information they may reveal to you. However, you may reveal the total money you make as per recent updates to the TOS.
Label headings as “sponsored links” or “advertisements” only. Other labels are not allowed. I have seen many sites label ads with other titles. Dont make your site a target in a few seconds gaze.
Never launch a New Page for clicked ads by default. Adsense ads should open on the same page. You may be using a base target tag to open all links in a new window or frame by default. Correct it now as they do not want new pages opening from clicked ads.
One Account suffices for Multiple websites. You do not need to create 5 accounts for 5 different websites. One account will do. If you live in the fear that if one account is closed down for violation of TOS, believe me they will close all accounts when they find out. You can keep track of clicks by using channels with real time statistics. They will automatically detect the new site and display relevant ads.
Place ads only on Content Pages. Advertisers pay only for content based ads. Content drives relevant ads. Although you might manage some clicks from error, login, registration, “thank you” or welcome pages, parking pages or pop ups, it will get you out of the program.
Do not mask ad elements. Alteration of colors and border is a facility to blend or contrast ads as per your site requirements. I have seen many sites where the url part is of the same color as the background. While blending the ad with your site is a good idea, hiding relevant components of the ads is not allowed. Also do not block the visibility of ads by overlapping images, pop ups, tables etc.
Do not send your ads by email. HTML formatted emails look good and allow placement of these Javascript ads. But it is not allowed as per TOS. You do not want impressions registering on their logs from any email even once. They are watching!
Keep track of your content. So Adsense is not allowed on several non content pages. But it is also not allowed on several content pages too. Do not add it on web pages with MP3, Video, News Groups, and Image Results. Also exclude any pornographic, hate-related, violent, or illegal content.
Do not alter the results after ad clicks or searches – Ensure you are not in any way altering the site which the user reaches to after clicking the ads. Do not frame, minimize, remove, redirect or otherwise inhibit the full and complete display of any Advertiser Page or Search Results Page after the user clicks on any Ad or Search results.
Avoid excessive advertising and keyword stuffing – Although the definition of ‘excessive’ is a gray area and is subject to discretion, yet Google adsense with correct placement, focused content and high traffic will get you much more income than other programs, so excessive advertising is not required. Keyword stuffing does target better focused ads, but overdoing it is not required.
Ensure you Language is Supported – Adsense supports “Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Danish, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, English, Polish, Finnish, Portuguese, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian and Turkish”. In addition, AdSense for search is available in Czech, Slovak, and Traditional Chinese. If your web pages language is not supported, do not use the code on such pages.
Maximum 2 referral button per product per page – With the launch of the google adsense referral program, you are allowed to put only 2 referral buttons for adsense referral, adwords referral, Google pack and Firefox with google toolbar referral. Update: This feature is closing Aug 2008.
Do not specify Google ads as your alternate ads. – Several services like Chitika eminimalls allow you to place alternate urls, when a targeted paying ad cannot be displayed. This involved creating an simple html page and putting the ad to be displayed instead. Even Adsense allows an alternate url feature instead of displaying public service ads. But never use Adsense ads as alternate urls. See [Adsense Certified Networks]
Do not confuse with adjacent images – It was a common policy to increase CTR by placing same number of images as the number of text ads, which falsely gave the impression that the text ads represented an explanation to these images. Inserting a small space or a line between the images and ads is not allowed. Make sure that the ads and images are not arranged in a way that could easily mislead or confuse your visitors.

Whenever in doubt, it is better to ask for adsense help from the learned staff of Google Adsense. They are very helpful!

7 keys to SEO: How to help people find your blog

Even a novice blogger needs to understand how people use search engines to find the content they are looking for. You want to help people find your posts. This practice is known as search-engine optimization, abbreviated SEO.

I am not expert enough in SEO to cover the matter in depth (for more on the topic, I recommend Danny Sullivan‘s excellent Search Engine Land blog). I will cover some basics for a workshop today for the music staff of the CBC. When you are working on a blog post, consider these factors to help people find your post:

Relevance
Headline
Keywords
Google trends
Links
Photo captions
Metadata

1. Relevance.

Don’t litter your post or headline with irrelevant terms that you think might help your Googlejuice (the term for your attractiveness to Google’s search engine). With its downgrading of content farms and its use of “+1” endorsements to enhance search results, Google is trying to improve the search process, so apply all of these techniques only by choosing words and links that are relevant to your post. Don’t drop gratuitous references to Lady Gaga into your post (unless you are doing it for humor, as Gene Weingarten did).

2. Headlines

The headline is the most important part of your post to help search engines find your content. It should include the words people might be most likely to use in trying find content on the topic(s) you are writing about. If you were searching for something like this post, what are the first few words you would type into a search engine? Those words should be in your headline, ideally the first few words of the headline. Often this will be a performer’s name, but it might be the name of a venue, genre or instrument.

Writing a headline for search engines is significantly different from writing a headline for a newspaper. In a newspaper, the reader sees the headline in context: A reader of the Toronto Star or Globe and Mail entertainment section sees “lang” or “Cohen” in a headline and will assume you mean k.d. lang orLeonard Cohen. But people searching for stories about those musicians are likely to type their full names in the search window, so your headline should include the full names. A newspaper headline can be intriguing because you read it in context, seeing it on a news, entertainment or sports page. But a headline that tries to intrigue the reader online actually tends to withhold keywords that search engines want to see in the headline.

On my Hated Yankees blog, before I understood about the importance of headlines to SEO, I wrote a blog post about Don Mattingly, comparing his career achievements to Kirby Puckett’s (they’re nearly identical), and arguing that since Puckett was an automatic Hall of Famer, Mattingly should be, too. My headline would have worked fine in a newspaper, where it would have run on a sports page, probably above photos of Mattingly and Puckett. But to a search engine,You be the judge: Who’s a Hall of Famer? isn’t going to show up high when people are searching for Don Mattingly. I’ve written other blog posts on Yankees who aren’t any more famous than Mattingly (Ron Guidry, Graig Nettlesand Thurman Munson) that attracted significantly more readers because I put their names in the headlines, making it easier for people to find them.

It’s also a good idea to include words such as poll or video that people might search for (photo is not as helpful, because so many posts include photos and Google has a separate image search, so people are less likely to include photoin a search term). You can just do this in parentheses after the headline: (VIDEO). By the way, I didn’t do that here, because the videos aren’t really about SEO, so they wouldn’t be relevant to a search. If I were blogging aboutGordon Lightfoot or David Allen Coe, the videos would be relevant and I should mention them in the headline.

3. Keywords

While the headline is the most important part of your content for a search engine, the words in the text also help search engines find your blog post. So make sure that you place keywords people might search for high in your post. It’s best to place the keywords in the first sentence, but that concern should not override your need to write a strong lead. “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” was a great song, written before SEO mattered, which is good because it had lousy SEO. The headline probably needed the words “shipwreck” and “Lake Superior.” But the offense was compounded in the lyrics because it never used the term “Lake Superior.” The lake is alternately called “Gitche Gumee,” “Superior” and “the lake,” but to be most attractive to search engines, you want to use the exact phrase people might search for. Good writing should trump clumsy SEO writing, but try to smoothly use the most likely relevant search terms in your blog posts.

4. Google trends

Use Google trends to check for popular keywords. You can enter a few different possible keyword combinations in the search window to see which is the most popular combination. If you enter the first word or two of a search (perhaps an artist’s name) into Google’s home-page search window, the auto-completes that Google provides will show you some popular searches. If one of those searches is relevant, consider using that exact term in your headline and/or in the post.

5. Links

Links are how a search engine’s spiders find your content. Relevant links boost your CEO. They not only help Google find you, but other blogs and sites get “pingbacks” (notifications that you have linked to them), so they might link to you, or blog or tweet about you, which further boosts your SEO. It also helps your SEO if the hyperlinked word (called the anchor text) are relevant. For instance, in point #2 above, I underlined and italicized blog post because that’s where I might have put the link about the Don Mattingly post. You’ll notice that instead, I linked the actual headline. Or I could have linked Mattingly’s name. Those are more relevant, so those links are more helpful to my SEO. Another bad practice is to hyperlink words like click here, rather than linking in relevant anchor text.

6. Photo captions

Photos often have their own URLs, so sometimes they will be the side door into a blog post. Someone searching for an image will find the image and end up reading your post. Or a photo or video might be a blog post by itself. Because the photo and video are not searchable themselves, you need to provide keywords that will help people find them. In the caption of the photo or the introduction to the video, be sure to use the keywords and phrases that people interested in this photo or video might use in a search. Write captions for three different audiences: the search engine itself, the person looking at a page of search results and the person who is actually looking at the photo. Be sure to identify people and places in the photo or video and to answer any questions the photo might raise. Don’t feel you need to state the obvious, unless that might help the search engines find the photo or help someone reading the caption in a page of search results.

7. Metadata

Metadata is essentially data about data. In this case, it’s information about your blog or photo that might not be immediately visible to readers but is visible to search engines. If your content management system allows you to enter tags and SEO keywords, be sure to provide relevant tags and keywords.

Much of my understanding of SEO comes from my former TBD colleague Mitch Schuler, who led a workshop for our staff and later was a guest speaker for my entrepreneurial journalism class at Georgetown University. He hasn’t blogged about SEO, or I would link to him and quote him, but I certainly should attribute much of this blog post indirectly to Mitch (except for any errors, which are mine).

My favorite anecdote about Mitch’s SEO expertise comes from the Discovery Channel hostage situation, which was the first big breaking news story, just three weeks after we launched on Aug. 9, 2010. The suspect was named James Jay Lee, and we initially identified him in our story and headline using all three names, as criminal suspects have been identified by journalists since way before Lee Harvey Oswald, just to avoid any misidentification. Mitch quickly noted that people were searching more for “James J. Lee” than for “James Jay Lee,” so we quickly rewrote our headline to cut the middle name down to just the initial. And we rocked in search results and search traffic that day.

This David Allen Coe song makes fun of country music clichés by gratuitously singing about mother, prison, truck, trains and getting drunk. It makes for a fun song, but it’s not good SEO to gratuitously drop irrelevant words into a blog post:

Don't continuously write the post, give some spaces and write in paragraphs so it may be easy to read.

You should write the main goals and the main purpose of your article first. Don't discuss anything which is not related to your topic. Just talk to the point.

4. Always Choose Shorter Post Title

Your post title should be as shorter as possible. Place the important words first. Don't worry about grammar, search engines don't look your grammar.

A picture speaks a thousand worlds and give your post a fresh look. Moreover it also optimizes your post by appearing in Google Images. Try to place picture on the top left side of your article like me.

New Year CountDown Widget For Blogs

This widget can easily be added to both blogspot or wordpress. Simply copy the code and paste it in your templates. The moment new year starts, the widget will prompt an alert message saying: "Happy New year Everybody!" sharp at 12.00 a.m. The clock disappears the moment new year arrives and prompts the alert message. 9 Tricks I Used To Triple My AdSense Earnings In 30 Days

I have been using Google AdSense to monetize my blogs and websites for as long as I remember. In fact it was the first method I ever tried (I made a whooping $15 on my first month… back in 2005). Over the years I migrated to other methods (e.g., direct sponsors and affiliate marketing), which made AdSense become merely an inventory filler. I was still making around $1,000 monthly from it, but whenever I could I would use other methods over it.

Then some months ago I started noticing an upward trend on the CPC of my sites, and I figured that I should give AdSense another try. I started applying some tricks here and there, and the next month I made over $3,000 with it (that is combining all my sites). I was pleasantly surprised, and I decided to keep using it actively on some sites.

In this article I want to share with you the tips and tricks I used to triple my AdSense earnings in one month.

1. I added units to my Big Websites

Daily Blog Tips and Daily Writing Tips are my largest websites in terms of traffic. They are getting close to one million monthly page views (combined). Despite that I was not using AdSense on them, mainly because the direct sponsorship model was working relatively well.

Some months ago I decided to load some AdSense units on the sites, however, and the results were very positive. Around 70% of the boost I generated to my earnings came from these two sites. At the same time I managed to keep the other monetization methods working fine, and no reader ever complained about the new ads (more on that later).

Even if your blog is already making money with direct sponsors and affiliate marketing, therefore, you could still manage to increment your earnings by strategically adding some AdSense units.

2. I added units to my Small Websites

As many webmasters do, I have a bunch of small websites scattered around the web. Some are on free hosted platforms like Blogger, and others are self hosted sites that I abandoned along the way. Most of these sites still get traffic, however. Not much, but combined the numbers get decent.

I figured that adding AdSense units to all these sites could yield some money, and I was right. The main reason is that, since these are abandoned sites and don't have loyal visitors, I can place the units very aggressively. The result was a very high CTR (Click-through rate), which compensates the small traffic levels.

Don't underestimate the earning potential of small websites, especially if you are willing to place AdSense units aggressively.

3. I used the Large Units

If you want to make money with AdSense you'll inevitably need to use one of these units: the 336×280 large rectangle, the 300×250 rectangle, the 120×600 large skyscraper or the 728×90 leaderboard.

Whenever I tried to use smaller units the results were disappointing. Even if I positioned them aggressively the CTR was just too low.

All four units mentioned above can produce good results, but the best performing one is by far the 336×280 large rectangle, and that is the one I used to boost my earnings.

4. I placed the Units above the Fold

My first trial was to place the 336×280 large rectangle between the post and the comments section of my blogs. The results were OK. I then decided to try placing them below the post titles for one week, and the CTR skyrocketed. In fact I still need to find a placement/unit combination that will beat placing a 336×280 unit below post titles.

I knew this rule, but I guess I needed to test and get confirmation. The rule is: if you want to make money with Google AdSense, you must place your units above the fold.

5. I Focused on Organic Traffic

My main concern with adding a large AdSense unit right below my post titles was that some of the loyal readers could get annoyed with it. At the same time I knew that loyal readers become ad blind quite fast, and that the bulk of my money would come from organic visitors (i.e., people coming via search engines to my posts).

To solve this problem I decided to display the large rectangle only on posts older than seven days (using the Why Do Work WordPress plugin). It worked like a charm, as loyal readers don't even notice the ad units when they are browsing through my recent posts, and organic visitors almost always see the ads because they usually land on posts older than seven days.

6. I started using AdSense for Search

I was not sure how much money I would be able to make with AdSense for Search, but I was not happy with the search results provided by WordPress, so I decided to give it a shot anyway.

Currently I am making around $60 monthly with AdSense for Search. It is not much, but if you sum it over one year we are talking about $720. On top of that the search results are as relevant as you'll get, so it is a win win situation.

7. I started using AdSense for Feeds

Another AdSense product I decided to try was the AdSense for Feeds one. I opted to display the ads below my feed items (you can also place them on top, but this would be too intrusive in my opinion). The results here were pretty good, both in terms of CTR and earnings.

You obviously need a large RSS subscriber base to make this work, but I am guessing that even with a couple thousand subscribers you could already make $100 monthly from feed ads.

8. I played around with section targeting

Section targeting is an AdSense feature that allows you to suggest specific sections of your site that should be used when matching ads. You can read more about it here.

I found that on niche and small websites section targeting can help a lot. Often times Google was displaying unrelated ads on these sites because there weren't enough pages. After using section targeting I managed to increase the relevancy of the ads and consequently the CTRs.

9. I tested with Different Colors and Fonts

If you enabled both image and text ads on your units you should be able to customize the colors and fonts. I did some testing with both of these factors, and it helped to increase the numbers. Nothing dramatic, but it was definitely worth my time.

You just need to track your CTR for a couple of weeks. Then change the color or font and track it for another week, seeing if you can beat the original CTR. If you can, keep the new format. If you the performance decreased, try a new color or font and track the CTR for another week, until you find the optimal combination.

On my sites the best results came from making the ad units merge with the look of the site, but on some sites contrasting colors perform better, so testing is a must.

You can separate the “emoticon region” into any ID or class. For example:

It’s way convenient for everyone :D
For those who installed the older versions of this hack, you don’t need to do anything for uninstalling. But of course, you can clean your template by remove the link to emoticon.js and onload=”replaceText()”, it is totally optional.

Removing dynamic templates from your blog

Dynamic templates can be removed from your blog - but be careful if you want to keep any gadets etc that were on your blog before it went dynamic.

Overview:

Previously, I've described the initial version of dynamic templates for blogger, and the second release.

This 2nd version is a lot better integrated with the rest of Blogger, but it has some consequences for many other parts of the system.

In particular, if you want to go back to using a design or layout template there is a real risk of losing all your previous gadgets if you aren't careful how your remove the dynamic template.

Dynamic view template = no Design option in the dashboard drop down

One effect of choosing a Dynamic template for your blog is that the Design option is not on the main-menu drop down in the dashboard in the new, the post-Sept-11 Blogger interface.

Instead, there is just Template, which takes you straight to the Template designer: this happens because, unlike layout or designer templates, you have no control over the layout of a blog with dynamic template, and cannot edit the HTML behind it.

If you want to have this level of control, including being responsible for the consequences of editing your template, then you need to remove the dynamic template, and switch back to a regular one.

How to remove a dynamic template from your blog:

When you have chosen a dynamic template, there is an option in the Design screen to " Revert to previous template".

If you click this link, your blog template goes back to how it was before you applied the designer template, including all gadgets and layout customisations.

BUT

If you choose "revert to previous template", and then pick a different designer or layout template before saving, then you will lose all gadgets and customisations that are not on the "standard" version of the new template.

The moral of the story: always back up before making major changes to your blog. (And even then I'm not 100% convinced you will be able to restore your gadgets to exactly how they were.)

NB Any posts you have made in the meantime are kept - it is simply the template that is changed here, not the blog contents.

Disabling dynamic views for your blog:

In new-interface-Blogger, I cannot see any way to turn Dynamic views off.

In pre-Sept-11-Blogger, there is still an option to turn Dynamic views off, under Settings > Formatting.

This is still relevant, because people can see your blog using dynamic views, even if you haven't chosen a dynamic template, by using www.YourURL.blogspot.com/view (although this may not work for blogs with custom URLs)

10 Reasons To Avoid Blogger Dynamic Views

Blogger's major updates include the introduction of Blogger Dynamics views. The word Dynamic means that the entire blog interface or graphical appearance can be changed automatically with a click of a mouse and can be displayed in seven different looks which include FlipCard, Magazine, Sidebar, Snapshot, timeslide, Mosaic and Classic. They are indeed 40% fast loading because every page loads inside one window without letting the browser to jump from one page to another. I have already written two detailed posts on whether you should use Dynamic views for your blogs or not. I also wrote a post on disadvantages of Template Designer. Today we will discuss some technical drawbacks of this new development which would be enough evidence to prove that why you should avoid using Blogger dynamic views.

1. Doesn't Support AdSense Integration

Strange but true! There is no option available in the Design section where you can paste your AdSense code and make Ads appear on your blog.

2. No Widget Support

There is no layout section (Page Elements) where you may add new gadgets. The HTML/Javascript widget in the custom templates allows you to add almost any widget you like. May that be Adsense code, Buysellads code or important widgets like Popular posts, Recent Comments, Recent posts etc. Your blog will only contain the post body and a sidebar and amazingly both these areas can not be edited.

In short at present you can not add widgets in Blogger Dynamic Views.

3. No Edit HTML Option

The Edit HTML option lets you upload custom blogspot templates. It lets you completely change the look of your blog by applying new plugins and themes. You can introduce new widget sections, adjust columns, edit post body, add JavaScript, add jquery and anything you can think of. Unfortunately Dynamic views offer no Edit HTML functionality. Clicking the design link on your dashboard takes you to the auto Edit area where you can only change the font colors, font family and background color and styles. But you can not upload a new template and can not EDIT the HTML of your blog layout. You can not add social media plugins below post titles or any other plugin inside the post body. Neither can you manually add widgets that I discussed above to your template. No Edit HTML section means no Difference between Blogger and Wordpress.

If you are using draft.blogger.com then you will observe that the Edit HTML button is not active in your Dashboard for your blog that is using Dynamic views.

3. Dynamic Views are not SEO Friendly

Complex web scripts control the display of your blog which includes AJAX. Google spiders can only read text. They are blind to images, videos, flash and Javascript. To access a new page Google robots use the links on your site. Some links such the "Comments link" in Dynamic view asks the user to click it so that comments may be loaded but Spider can not do that. Comments are hidden to spiders when they crawl the content. Comments have therefore chances of being left out of index by Google spiders. There is a greater chance that your comments will not be indexed which means you are loosing 50% content of your post and thus loosing some important keywords which users leave while commenting. Most of the traffic to blogs depend largely on the comments left by the readers.

Due to no Edit HTML support we can not optimize certain links that can effect site ranking. Neither can you add meta tags such as meta keywords.

4. Loss of Page Views and Page Impressions

All pages load in a single window with requesting the browser to reload. A reference is sent through AJAX that tells the browser to remain in the same window and load only the post body without loading the sidebar and other sections. Even if Adsense integration is allowed in future, your revenue will tremendously drop due to loss of pageviews. Pageviews matter because you you don't just get paid for the clicks but also for each 1000 impressions/pageviews made on your blog. This is what we call Cost per thousand Impressions (CPI or CPM)

5. Browser Compatibility Issues

The Template is build using latest in web technology like AJAX, HTML5 and CSS3. Internet Explorer which is the second largely used browser doesn't support CSS3 and HTML5 completely at present. So the results would look different on different browsers.

6. Jump Break Does not Work

You can not attach a read more link by summarizing your posts. The posts do not expand when the read more link or Jump Break link is clicked. Visit this Link to see it for yourself. None of my post is accessible to the user. So if you have decided to shift to Dynamic views than you will have to manually remove jump breaks from all your posts. Imagine removing the "Read more Link" manually from over 500 posts!

7. No professional Touch

Your blog wont look any different from those half a million blogs who have selected Dynamic Views as their default template.

8. Not SMO Friendly

Dynamic views only have Google+ , Facebook like and Twitter buttons added by default at the bottom of each post. But you can not add your Facebook Like box and other social media plugins to the post section or anywhere else. Indeed a big issue concerned with social media optimization.

9. You can not add Drop Down Menu

Would you love visiting a blog or site with no navigation menu? Of course you would hate it. At present you can only add Page Links but no custom installation of a drop down menu is supported. You can not provide your readers with easy navigation option and that sounds weird!

10. No Favicon, No Blog Logo

Neither can you add a background image to the header of your blog nor can you add a favicon. So you have no option at present to display your blog logo either on header or as Favicon.

12 Tips For Google Adsense 2011

Google just released a Newbie Central for their AdSense program, those ads webmasters can include on their site to earn money for every click on the ad from a visitor (if you're using the program, part of the advertiser budget will go to you, and the other part to Google). I wanted to add some tips from my own experience:

1. Ads can work well in-between other stuff. On a games site of mine, some of the games don't contain ads next to the game area; the AdSense ad will only be shown in-between game rounds. This is the time the visitor is not concentrating on performing a task but might take a small break, and be open to the option of visiting new sites.

2. Put too much emphasis on AdSense and your site may be linked to less. The more available space you dedicate to AdSense on your site, and the less you differentiate between ads and content in your design, the more money you earn with the program, right? Not quite. While pushing the AdSense may result in short-term gains, it might also convince some visitors that the site is too crowded to be worth visiting again. And some of those visitors may also be bloggers or other people who might otherwise help to promote your site with links to it. And the less your site gets linked to, the less traffic it gets, meaning AdSense revenues may go down in the long term.

3. Even if you get huge traffic, the AdSense income from the site is more dependent on the site type and audience. Google targets AdSense ads automatically to the site content. Or at least, it does so ideally – but some types of content fare better than others with this targeting. I noticed for instance that AdSense does better on a games site than on a technology blog. I also heard people say that AdSense does quite good on product oriented blogs; say, one post solely about the iPod; another post solely about Gadget XYZ, and so on.

4. Image ads can be relevant and work for you, but they might also apall some visitors. Google's AdSense program gives you the option to choose between a couple of different ad formats. Two main groups are text ads vs text & image ads. When you choose the latter, Google will deliver what they deem works best for your content (or so one would hope, and it would be in Google's best self-interest to serve you the best possible ad, it seems).

However, Google doesn't really know your layout preferences, and they don't really understand when your audience thinks ads are "too much"; and considering image ads include Flash animations (which you can't disable, once you go for image ads), Flash animations may well push some people away. One thing you can do is to only show image ads in areas where they don't disturb the content, e.g. at the end of posts. Also, you might want to listen to visitor feedback on the ads being served; I received emails before that the blinking ad on this or that site made a person want to leave the site, at which point I blocked the specific advertiser via the AdSense Setup -> Competitive Ad Filter option.

5. When it comes to context sensitive targeting, you can increase or lower the importance of certain parts of your page. To help Google find a matching ad for your content, you can use the HTML comment syntax by encapsulating more important parts with

Or, to lower the importance of a section, use:

(Google notes that it may take up to 2 weeks for this change to your site will be taken into account by the AdSense.)

What if your site doesn't have any good matchable content to begin with, though? Say, the page just includes an image. Well, for the reasons of search engine optimization but also ad optimization you might want to consider using at least a descriptive title, an explanatory footer containing the important keywords or keyphrases (the kind of footer that actually helps the human visitor by explaining what the page is about). In the case of image content, reasonable alt and title attribute texts should be used as well.*

*Whatever you do, don't resort to "keyword-stuffing" as it doesn't help your visitors and may get your page ranked lower in search engines.

8. Be aware of risks when you change ad layouts too much. I once had a system on the server to randomly differ between various AdSense layouts on the same page. Doing so I was hoping to add some good variety to keep the ads at least somewhat interesting and notable. Shortly after I stopped doing so and simply included a rather big static area for the AdSense to "do what it wants," the AdSense revenues for that site increased. Now, I don't know if this was a coincidence of some sorts, as revenues often go down or up even when you don't do anything, but it might well have been that there was a connection between adding too much homemade randomization, and lowered revenues.

At another time, during the redesign of this blog, I switched from one ad format to another for the end-of-posts AdSense ad space. This, combined with perhaps other layout changes, suddenly cut the ad revenues in half for the blog. It took me some time to realize that I had some ad channels* set up for the specific old layout size, and by changing this I must have kicked out all those advertisers who were pushing their ads through the channel.

*This setting can be found at AdSense Setup -> Channels.

9. Use competing ad systems when AdSense doesn't seem to work for a site. At CoverBrowser.com, which shows galleries of comic and book covers and so on, I tried including AdSense ads in "non-annoying" places in the layout (including trying to use AdSense affiliate links via AdSense Setup -> Referrals), but this didn't seem to work at all. However I then tried "affiliating" the "buy" link below individual covers, utilizing the eBay affiliate commission system offered by AuctionAds.com*. (Disclosure: Patrick Gavin, co-owner of AuctionAds, paid me for consulting before on other projects, like Sketchcast.com.) This worked a lot better, and as it was simply connected to an existing site feature, it also didn't add clutter.

A good start to find other ad programs is to search for adsense alternatives on Google... you will see a lot of lists which are dedicated to competitors. (Note that some of these competitors may be US-only.) You may also want to join an ad or blog network like The Deck, Federated Media (disclosure: I was part of Federated Media before), or 9 Rules. Before joining such a network – which might require you to show them your traffic stats and so on – check if their typical ads and campaigns fit with your site layout and your general ad type preferences.

*CommissionJunction also offers an eBay affiliate system but CommissionJunction has really low usability, in my opinion; setting it up is confusing.

10. Sometimes you may get a sudden increase in traffic, hence ad clicks, but you can't locate the source of the traffic. I'm using Google Analytics to track my sites, though AdSense is also a good first indicator of traffic explosions... because it will show the combined page views of all your sites (provided you include AdSense on all of them), as opposed to Google Analytics, where you need to check site by site individually.

However, sometimes even with Google Analytics, you won't be able to locate the source of your traffic because there's no specific new popular referrer being shown (a referrer is the site linking to your site, provided people click on that link). In these cases, it may well be that your site has been discussed in a TV show or similar, as the show won't "link" to you (but audiences will be entering your domain manually into the browser when they like what the saw on TV). When you feel that there has been a traffic explosion sometimes you may get additional email feedback in regards to your site, and it makes sense for you to ask your visitor: where did you first find out about the site? Maybe the can let you know about the name of the TV show, or magazine, or other "offline" source responsible for the peak. (I sometimes sent pointers to the BBC Click show for instance, with partly enormous effect.)

11. Consider using AdSense even when the page doesn't get any traffic yet. Who knows, some day the traffic suddenly explodes, and you might not realize fast enough and thus miss out on the action (as sometimes, traffic goes as fast as it comes).

On the other hand, reversely I would suggest to never do a site just to make ad money with it. That kind of motivation may lead to spammy sites that don't help anyone really. (If a project is great, it's great even if it doesn't make any money.)

12. Making money with AdSense takes time. In my experience, it may take many months to years for a site to gain enough traffic to make OK money through AdSense... if ever. I have almost never experienced any site making quick and easy money with AdSense (though you may be getting quicker results than me of course, as it depends on so many variables!).

I think for any site getting a couple of thousands of visitors a day, you might want to start playing around with AdSense to see where it takes you (if you didn't already include AdSense anyway just to see what happens, and following up on tip #9). As you are paid in US-$, the actual benefit the ad revenue will bring depends on your local costs of living as well (you might even ponder moving or going on an extended holiday trip if your local costs of living are too high for your site revenues to cover).

5 Google AdSense Tips To Follow If You Want To Make Money From Your Blog

Google AdSense is a very popular blog monetization tool because it’s easy to join the Google AdSense program, easy to integrate a variety of ads into your blog, and ads don’t have to take up a lot of space.
It has worked really well here for me at WebMaster-Success.com and I am now waiting on my second Google Adsense check.
However, there are a few rules you must follow unless you want to get banned from the AdSense program and make no money at all. Following are five of those rules:

Don’t Boost Clicks Artificially

There are a number of ways that Google AdSense publishers (such as bloggers) can artificially boost the number of clicks on the Google AdSense ads that appear on their sites. Following are a few methods that might be tempting but are considered spam and are a surefire way to get banned from the Google AdSense program:

Clicking on AdSense links on your blog yourself.

Asking other people to click on the AdSense links on your blog.

Using any kind of automated process to increase clicks (whether you create the process or a third party does it for you).

Joining with a group of other people to click on AdSense ads on each other’s blogs or websites.

Don’t Display More than the Allowed Number of Ads on a Page

Make sure you read the current Google AdSense Program Policies and only display the number of ads allowed on a single web page at all times.

Don’t Fill a Page with Ads but No Original Content

Any page on your blog that includes Google AdSense ads must include more original content than ads. In fact, Google considers displaying a page full of ads with little or no original content a form of spam.

Don’t Create More than One AdSense Account

It might be tempting to create completely separate Google AdSense accounts and publish ads from both accounts on the same blog in order to get around rule #3 above, but doing so is a violation of Google policies. While you can add more than one blog or website to your Google AdSense account, you may not have more than one actual account.

Don’t Try to Trick People into Thinking AdSense Ads are NOT Ads

Hiding text link ads within the content of your blog posts in an attempt to make people think they aren’t ads is a violation of Google AdSense policies. Bottom-line, don’t try to disguise ads in an effort to increase clicks.

All about the Blogger 'Monetize' tab

The Monetize tab in Blogger makes it easy to enable AdSense ads on your blog. Once enabled, Blogger will retrieve your AdSense earnings data directly from AdSense so you do not need to go to AdSense to get basic earnings information.

AdSense Reports

Once you start generating AdSense impressions, you will begin earning money when people click on ads that show on your site.
The earnings report (visible when you click on the Monetize link from your Dashboard, or the Monetize tab when viewing your blog while logged into Blogger) includes a drop-down bar with Today, Yesterday, Last 7 Days, This Month, Last Month, and All time.
Selecting an option will retrieve the relevant report directly from AdSense.

All time

If you are already an AdSense user, you will notice that Blogger created a new channel (with the URL of your blog) in your account. If you have had AdSense ads on your blog before using Blogger’s AdSense integration to insert ads into your blog, it is important to note that All time will retrieve data only from the time you connected Blogger to your AdSense account.
This in no way affects your overall AdSense reporting, available directly from AdSense.

Terminology

The AdSense report visible from the Monetize tab contains basic information about how many ads have run on your blog, how many clicks were generated, and how much revenue you have earned. Each term in the report is defined below:

Page impression: A page impression is generated every time a user views a page displaying Google ads. We will count one page impression regardless of the number of ads displayed on that page. For example, if you have a page displaying three ad units and it is viewed twice, you will generate two page impressions and six ad unit impressions.

Clicks:# The number of times an ad was clicked on in the given reporting period.

Page CTR (Clickthrough Rate): The number of ad clicks divided by the number of impressions for the page of ads that appears when a link unit is clicked.

Page eCPM (Effective Cost Per Thousand Impressions): Calculated by dividing earnings by number of page impressions and multiplying. This makes it easier to compare multiple sites to see which are performing better.

Earnings: Total revenue earned to date. More detail about earnings is available in the AdSense Help Center.
