Banking and Cranking: 5 Cost-Effective Springtime Crankbait Choices

When the boat is still in winterization and skim ice covers the large lakes, there is no better time to fish small ponds. These bodies of water can provide some exciting action and also serve as a great testing ground for new lures and techniques. Crankbait fishing can be a great way to cover water in small ponds and is always an effective approach to land pre-spawn largemouth. In this article, I will highlight 5 affordable crankbaits that I have found to be effective for bank fishing in the springtime period.

Cotton Cordell Big O ($4.69) – This small crank packs a mighty punch! Available in 9 appealing colors and 3 productive sizes ranging from 2 to 3”, this bait really shines in situations where shallow water, bottom contact is crucial. The tight wobbling action of this bait calls fish out of cover and entices them to strike.

Strike King KVD Square Bill ($5.29) – With another Bassmaster Classic in the bag, you can’t go wrong with Strike King KVD Square Bill. It dives 3 to 5’ and comes in a 2.25 and 2.75” size – perfect for all kinds of fishing situations. I’ve only been fishing this bait for about 4 months, but I certainly haven’t been disappointed! This bait deflects off of timber and rock very well.

Bandit 200 Series ($4.79) – Awesome at covering the 4 to 8’ depth range, the Bandit 200 is a tipsnbass.com favorite! Highlighted in its own feature segment, this bait catches fish all over the country with its unique action and vast color selection.

Norman Deep Little N ($4.79) – This 2.5” crank can achieve depths of 10 to 12’! Needless to say, I love fishing this bait in ponds with steep banks where getting deep and contacting bottom is essential. Furthermore, I like the erratic action of this bait when it strikes cover and its movement attracts fish in the cold and warm water periods.

Rapala DT Flat Series ($7.59) – Sometimes a subtle, flat-sided balsa bait is the ticket in clearer resources with shad as the principle forage base. The wiggling action of this bait drives fish crazy as it appears to be a vulnerable meal. This Rapala offering comes in a 3, 7 and 9’ diving bait and is made in many fish-catching colors.

These baits run true out of the box and at a low price, you won’t be upset if you lose a couple of these cranks. Grab your favorite cranking stick and start chucking and winding!

Springtime Simplified: A Straightforward Approach to Making Your First Time Out a Success.

Largemouth bass fishing for the first time of the year can be a daunting task. Tough conditions, coupled with scatterbrained anticipation can often lead to a rough initial outing for anglers. In this article, we will outline some basic principles to govern your springtime bass fishing in Midwestern lakes and reservoirs – ensuring that your first time out will be a success.

Whether you are fishing a three acre pond or a thousand acre reservoir, the same general philosophies apply. Northern shorelines in Midwestern bodies of water are always the first to warm with greater sun exposure during the early spring period. Warmer water often times will attract more baitfish due to increased nutrient and thus more predatory fish, such as bass. Creeks with dark water inflow and shallow muddy flats with emergent weed growth will provide warmer conditions, despite their proximity to northern banks. Sea walls and dark colored docks will also absorb heat throughout the course of warm days in the spring period, making them great places to target bass as well. The more of these elements you can find that coexist in a common area, the greater your odds are of catching bass. Furthermore, it is important to pay attention to wind patterns and temperature trends in terms of stability to gauge fish activity level and positioning on key structures.

Covering water in an efficient manner is crucial for the first time out. As always, it is important to pay attention to fish behavior and let them dictate your presentations. Shallow Crankbaits, Jerkbaits, and Lipless Crankbaits are a few favorites of the TipsNBass Team to begin searching for active fish. Swim Jigs, Swimbaits, and Spinnerbaits can also be effective for combing water during this time.

Water clarity can play a major role as to which search baits are more effective. As a general rule, jerkbaits and swimbaits are much more effective in clear water situations than they are in water with visibility of less than 2 to 3 feet. Conversely, spinnerbaits tend to produce better in dirtier water. Crankbaits and rattlebaits can be effective in all water clarities, but try to use more realistic colors as the water clarity increases. Once you locate fish in a distinct area, you can continue to use these moving baits to extract bass. At times, these search baits prove to be the best method for catching fish in a given area. Other times however, don’t be afraid to slow down and challenge fish with other presentations. For example, if you are catching fish on a long pause with a hard jerkbait, try fishing a soft Stick Bait. or Jerkbait. in the same zone. Furthermore, if you are catching an occasional bass on a stop and go retrieved rattlebait, try a rattle Jig. with a Craw Trailer. in the same vicinity. These subtle, slow presentations can often times pay off with more and bigger bass.

On our first expedition this spring, Greg Baacke and I ventured out on a local lake here in Northwest Indiana to target bass. The air temperature when we began was in the low 40’s with high pressure, light north winds and bright skies accompanying. We started out at 10am and began casting shallow crankbaits, rattlebaits and jerkbaits across expansive 1′ to 4′ flats in search of aggressive fish. Fishing was slow and conditions were tough! After the first hour of fishing, we only landed 2 bass using these methods and only contacted water temperatures as high as 47 degrees. Bluegills, crappies and bass were visible on these flats, but their attitudes were negative to neutral at best. We decided to move shallower in search of warmer water and return to the flats as the temperature rose over the course of the day.

We shifted our focus to a mud flat that was all of 1’ deep in the back of a bay that had creek and spring activity. The water was a bit muddier and emergent vegetation was present yielding a water temperature of 53 degrees! We were in business; or at least we thought we were. We trimmed up and forged forward seeing literally hundreds of bass in this area with no shortage of forage. Greg fished a weightless, texas rigged soft stick bait on the edges of the weeds while I worked the area with a swim jig. Despite seeing all of these bass, we were only able to catch 3 over the course of an hour as the fish proved to be wary in these shallow water conditions. Greg and I discussed our possibilities and agreed that fishing shallow, warmer water was going to be important given the number of fish we had just seen. We decided to fish bays directly adjacent to these super-shallow, warming flats and focused on docks and other structures that would hold heat and attract baitfish. We were hoping these bass would be more aggressive. This proved to be the ticket! Greg worked meticulously with a hard jerkbait, a Megabass: Vision 110 to be exact, around the edges of these structures, varying retrieve and focusing on bass behavior. Once Greg located these fish, I pitched skirted jigs with craw trailers and wacky-rigged soft stick baits to the same areas with good success as well. This one – two punch accounted for dozens of fish over the next 2 hours and even a little bass thumb!

The true keys to our success on this springtime voyage were versatility, a multi-modal approach and paying attention to the subtleties; namely water temperature, bass behavior and forage density. As always, if you stay disciplined and approach the fish with confidence baits and a good attitude, the results are usually good. Our maiden outing was no exception to this rule!

With bass fishing tackle, it is very easy to get conditioned to mainstream, mass-produced baits. Many companies create an existence by merely copying originators. Bayou Tackle Company is an exception to this duplicate rule! Many of their hand-made products may look familiar to anglers at a distance, but their attention to detail and novel approaches to baits are what set them apart from the monotony. Their unique and innovative approach to lure-making is truly showcased in the TWIN SPIN TAIL KICKER.

What sets this bait apart from other tail kickers on the market is the creator’s attention to detail. Dave Longrie spent countless hours tinkering with components and fine-tuning this bait on the water until he achieved the perfect tail kicker. The double colorado blade selection coupled with a ball-bearing swivel allows the blades to spin freely even at the slowest of retrieves. Furthermore, the weight forward design of this lure allows for it to track straight and keeps the blades from coming into contact with the line. The treble hook on this tail kicker is an ultra-sharp vmc split treble hook. It does not have a split ring attached, thus keeping the hook from catching on the body of the bait and ensuring good hook-ups. In addition, the body of the tail kicker is powder coat painted with automobile grade paint through a process of electrolysis and baking. Needless to say, the paint job is extraordinarily durable!

In our experiences fishing this bait, there is no wrong way to fish the TWIN SPIN TAIL KICKER. On Lake Fork with renowned guide, Brian Duplechain, we have caught hundreds of bass on lift/drop, crank/pause, vertically jigged and slow rolled techniques. During the late summer and fall periods when bass migrate to creek channel edges in search of baitfish schools, this lure really shines. Make a long cast across your favorite piece of structure and hang on!

There’s nothing better than a bit of friendly competition. In this edition of TipsNBass.com VS, MARK ZONA (legendary bass angler and TV host of Zona’s Awesome Fishing Show) goes head to head with PATRICK RENWICK (mythical angler and host of Region Bass Buzz 1230am WJOB) in an intense cast off. Check out the video above to see Who Will Prevail?

WOA WOA WOA….. HANG ON, HANG ON !!!!!!!

It’s not too often that we come across such insanely awesome pictures. These bare chested beauties are just too good to pass up. Let’s take a closer look.

Could it be that these two handsome individuals are long lost brothers? Judging on these pictures, I wouldn’t doubt it. After stumbling across these shirt-off gems I couldn’t help but think who would have prevailed in a good Ol’ street brawl back in their hay day.

Let’s start with Zona. Don’t let his skinny build and gleaming hairless chest fool you. There is no doubt this backyard gladiator has the speed and agility of a Jaguar. If I had to guess he grew the sketchy beard to get the ladies and kept the chest smooth for those passionate summer nights on the back of his bass tracker. From past experience, these slick chested bad boys won’t back down from anyone. They seem to take pride in their small deceiving demeanor. This way, when they knock you out, it makes them look 5,000 times more bad ass. Notice Zona’s jeans. People from this era normally sported Z-Cavaricci’s, similar to Pat’s white 1,000 belt loop bad boys. This means Zona is a self made man untouched by the glamorous pull of Saved by the Bell’s, Zach Morris. This is shaping up to be a great battle and you know Zona with his big mouth would be the first to initiate this epic showdown.

Moving on to the bronzed, hard bodied warrior, Patrick Renwick. OMG, are you serious? This dude is badass! First off you can’t help but notice this brute’s guns and six pack abs. Holy s*#t! Unlike Zona, Renwick keeps the chest hair all natural. If I had to guess he is probably only 14 years old in this picture and grew out the chest main to score with the older ladies. There are rumors that he would often hot wire I-ROC Z’s and go to the pool hall to score with chicks. DANG that’s awesome. Anyway, you’ll notice the long flowing hair from which he harnesses his THOR-like power, also good with the ladies. Now don’t think for one minute that his neck got that strong without some head banging to Metallica, Motley Crew and Danzig. Unlike the scruffy Zona, Renwick opts for a baby smooth face. This is not only to keep the ladies happy, but to show off his hickies as his hair blows in the wind. If you look closely, you’ll notice the perfectly shined Shimano Chronarch. This dude is Ballin for back in the day! He wanted to make sure everyone knew it by strategically placing it close to his matching ice white Z-Cavaricci’s. Nicely done Sir. The only thing Renwick is missing is the Oakley Razor Blades. If I had to guess they did’t make them with a polarized lens in the 80′s or you know Renwick would be sporting those mirrored wonders. Overall, this warrior has the entire package.

When it comes down to it, this match-up may be too close to call. For further evidence I am going to turn to the fish that these two well oiled combatants are holding. Zona chose to go with a double fisted approach. Nice choice. You can tell he carefully thought this through by showcasing a stocky, plump largemouth as well as a long skinny one. This can only mean 2 things:

He is subliminally representing his powerful right hand with the stocky fish and and his lean raw power with the longer bucketmouth. or…

That he is so awesome that he snagged both this male and female off the same bed which loudly states that he shows no mercy to his adversaries.

Renwick on the other hand decided to sport the more exotic peacock bass, the Lamborghini of the bass world. This also has 2 possible explanations.

This boldly shows that Renwick isn’t scared to run with the big boys of Miami. He most likely knows some type of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. or…

That he is such a rebel that will creep into you’re ritzy neighborhood and poach your colorful bass in broad daylight.

What really grabs my attention in Renwick’s photo is the bulge on the head of the peacock bass. I’ve seen several pictures of peacock bass, but none seem have lumps as big as the one he is holding. My guess is that as Renwick dragged this 15lb beast onto shore and swiftly punched it in the head to stop it from flopping. This way he could capture the perfect picture. I came to this conclusion by taking a closer look at the lump. You can tell it is already bruising and starting to form a hematoma. For this reason alone I am going to favor Renwick in this match-up. Sorry Zona. maybe next time!

All joking aside. These two gentleman are heroes of the fishing world and some of the best friends one could ask for. Not only do these guys know how to have a good time, they know how to take a good joke and aren’t scared to post their shirt off pictures online. Thanks again Zona and Renwick!

If it swims, chances are Mark Zona knows how to catch it. Zona (or simply “Z” as he is known throughout the fishing world) has been fooling fish with a rod and reel since he was old enough to walk.

Ice Fishing can be just as fun as warm weather fishing with nonstop action, big fish and good company. On the other hand, it can be the most miserable fishing experience of your life. It is critical to have the right equipment to have a successful day on the hard water. The slip bobber is an invaluable tool for ice fisherman because it not only allows you to keep your bait in the strike zone, but also shows you the most subtle bites that you would never feel with cold hands and a short rod. Follow these simple steps to set up your slip bobber and catch more fish through the ice.

Necessary Equipment:
*Slip Bobber *Bobber Stop *Bead *Split Shot *Jig – Hook

Step 1: Slide your slip knot (or bobber stop) up your line to a level 3’ from the end of your line. If using a slip knot, slide knot off of plastic tubing and cinch down. Slide tubing off of your line and cut tag ends of slip knot.

Step 2: Position a small bead up the line. This will stop the bobber from sliding up past the bobber stop or slip knot.

Step 3: Run the line through your bobber of choice. Select the size and type of bobber based on the weight of your presentation. Less bobber above the water surface results in less resistance when the fish goes to take the bobber down.

Step 4: Affix a split shot 12” from the tag end to keep the bobber and bead on the line. Choose a weight that balances well with your bobber so when you are fully rigged, just the top of the bobber is above water. This method helps detect up bites so when a fish takes your bait upwards, your bobber will rise. Also, it makes it easier to tie your hook or jig without having to fight the descending bobber.

Step 5: Tie on your lure of choice. Both jigs and plain hooks work well. Remember the lure can’t be too heavy or it will sink your bobber with its weight alone. If this is the case use a larger bobber.

Step 6: Use a lead clip weight with or without electronics to position your slip knot to the desired fishing depth. For those of you without electronics, a good place to start is a few inches off the bottom. Remove the clip weight, bait up and get ready to catch fish!

After a long, brutal winter in Northwest Indiana consisting of snow shoveling and perpetual ice fishing, it was time for a change of scenery and pace. When good friend and fellow fisherman, Dan Leslie, extended an invitation to fish the inter-coastal flats of Hilton Head, South Carolina for jumbo redfish, I jumped at the opportunity. Dan had previously been down to fish these waters during the summer of 2010 and had already contacted a local guide during his previous trip. Furthermore, he assured me that Captain Bill Kendrick of Sunrise Charters, whom he had previously fished with, would have no problem putting us on fish. Needless to say, I was pumped!

We arrived at sunrise at the boat launch with Captain Bill hyped and ready to fish. He was already launched and had all of our rigs ready for redfish mayhem. On-board his back up boat, a 188VS Intercoastal Ranger powered by a 175hp Yamaha Vmax HPDI, he had 8 Shimano Stradic 3000 reels spooled with 20lb. Power Pro Braid and paired with Okuma Reflexion Rods. Captain Bill usually runs a 20′ Kevlar Lake and Bay Flats Boat with a 250hp Evinrude HO Etec that was in need of basic maintenance. He had a variety of presentations assembled for us consisting of the following: 3/16oz. Florida Rigged Gulp Alive 5″ Jerk Shad on 5/0 Gamakatsu EWG’s, 1/4oz. Saltwater Assassin Jigs with Gulp Alive 3″ Molting Shrimp, Saltwater Assassin Spinnerbaits and Heddon Saltwater Super Spook Jrs. Captain Bill assured us that these fish would be schooled in big packs consisting of literally hundreds or thousands of reds! It didn’t take us long to find these fish visually. As the tide fell, the redfish would traverse off of the tidal-flooded flats to the adjacent troughs created by surrounding oyster rakes.

We proceeded to catch hundreds of redfish ranging from 3 to 9 pounds over the course of 3 days on the afore mentioned techniques with the Gulp Shrimp and Jerk Shad techniques predominating. Redfish pull hard and are a great fight on finesse spinning gear! That being said, I was worried for Dan’s health as he turned 40 on this trip and was almost positive that arthritis would eventually set in. Somehow, he was able to persevere despite aging joints. Captain Bill made sure we had a clean boat, plenty of drinks / snacks and lots of tackle / fresh gulp each day of our angling adventure. He even filleted and prepared our fresh catch at his home and introduced us to his wonderful family. You literally could not ask for a more personable or knowledgeable guide!

As I have learned so many times in the past, whether it be Jeff Evans at Kentucky Lake in Tennessee, Brian Duplechain at Lake Fork in Texas or Bill Kendrick at the inshore waters of South Carolina, you can never underestimate the value of a great guide. They help you to locate fish, streamline techniques and tackle and truly enjoy the resource. Furthermore, you make some great friendships along the way!

Luke Clausen, David Walker and Stephen Browning to lead Z-Man’s Pro Team.

Z-Man Fishing Products is proud to announce the signing of professional anglers Luke Clausen, David Walker, Stephen Browning and David Goshorn to Z-Man’s national freshwater pro-staff.

These top-notch anglers will assist Z-Man in the design and promotion of ElaZtech® baits, as well as educating anglers on how to achieve maximum results when fishing ElaZtech space-age soft plastic baits.

“We are thrilled to have four of bass fishing’s best aboard to help promote and design ElaZtech baits for Z-Man,” said Daniel Nussbaum, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Z-Man. “In addition, these pros will be very active on our social media channels, providing a look inside the lives of pro anglers for our Facebook fans and Website visitors.”

Luke Clausen of Spokane, Wash., is one of only five pros to have won both the Bassmaster Classic (2006 at Lake Toho) and the FLW Tour Forrest Wood Cup (2004 at Lake Logan Martin). He will be fishing the FLW Tour in 2011.

“ElaZtech is a product of the future and I’m really pumped to be a part of it,” said Clausen. “ElaZtech has a lot of advantages fishermen have yet to discover. Yes, it’s a departure from conventional plastics, and just as fluorocarbon is different than monofilament and tungsten is different from lead, there’s going to be a period of adjustment for anglers to get used to it. But once anglers realize the advantages of ElaZtech, they will definitely incorporate it into their arsenals.

David Walker of Sevierville, Tenn., won the FLW Tour Angler of the Year title in 1999, has qualified for the FLW Tour Forrest Wood Cup 10 times, the Bassmaster Classic six times, and has amassed an amazing 32 top-10 finishes in FLW Tour and Bassmaster Tour competition. He will be fishing the B.A.S.S. Elite Series in 2011.

“This is a huge opportunity to influence the future of soft plastics, and I’m certainly looking forward to it,” Walker said. “The supreme durability of ElaZtech in high-impact situations such as skipping docks, flipping heavy cover or punching mats will reveal just how much unnecessary plastic we go through and time we waste in a day’s fishing due to conventional plastic tearing up so easily. I started fishing ElaZtech baits on the Redfish circuit years ago and have been a believer ever since.”

Stephen Browning of Hot Springs, Ark., has 15 top-10 appearances in Bassmaster Tour and Elite Series competition, with one Tour win, and seven Bassmaster Classic qualifications, including the 2011 Classic coming up in New Orleans.

“I’m excited about being involved with Z-Man,” Browning said. “The Original Chatterbait® lure has been a big plus in my fishing the last couple of years. This fall I had a chance to try some of the ElaZtech products and it opened my eyes to how much fishing time and money can be saved with it. The days of constantly stopping your fishing to dig out a new jig chunk or creature bait are over.”

Rounding out the Z-Man pro staff is David Goshorn of Harleyville, SC. Goshorn fished the FLW Tour from 1997-2000 and recently re-qualified for the 2011 FLW Tour through the FLW Series.

Clausen, Walker and Browning will all be making appearances at the Z-Man booth throughout the Bassmaster Classic (February 18-20 in New Orleans) for meet and greets and limited-edition poster signings. Visit the Z-Man booth for complete details.
