It was part of the <a href="http://www.fumc-a2.org/coffee_house.cfm" target="_blank">Green Wood Coffee House Series</a> at the "North Campus of First United Methodist Church." It's basically a small fellowship hall/sanctuary sort of place...where they have Saturday night service, etc. I don't remember how I heard about the show. We arrived about a half hour early, and there were only about 5 other folks in the audience. By the time the show got started (no opening act), I guess there were about 25 people there...probably half or more of which were associated with Green Wood and the median age was probably 50 or greater. It's a shame the crowd was so small. I can only assume they didn't do a good job promoting the show (though, somehow, I heard about it). I guess Erelli has a history of performing at this venue (it was mentioned that his appearance there was 2005).</p> <p>I would have filmed the show, but I had forgotten to ask Mark's permission ahead of time and decided not to embarrass Lisa by filming first and asking forgiveness later. As expected, it was heavy on material from his most recent album, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Delivered-Mark-Erelli/dp/B001D7T27Q" target="_blank">Delivered</a> (the only one we had heard beforehand).</p> <p>He mentioned that there was a folk gathering of sorts at the airport. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dar_Williams" target="_blank">Dar Williams</a> was on the plane with him and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richie_Valens" target="_blank">Richie Valens</a> was at baggage claim.</p> <p>Apparently there was profanity in the first song (I didn't notice it) and afterwards Erelli apologized for using a curse word in front of the kids and jokingly told them that they should "never say that word."</p> <p>One of the first few songs he played was Volunteers (written from the perspective of a national guard volunteer who ends up in Iraq; lyrics <a href="http://www.markerelli.com/index.php?page=songs&display=797&category=Delivered" target="_blank">here</a>). His was due to deliver their child any day, so he was expecting that call. He got a laugh when he said he wrote the song "Once" in the shower...fully clothed...in the locker room of one of those hockey arenas. He commented that playing Green Wood was nice because he got the chance to play a full set instead of always only playing 4 or 5 songs at The Ark (i.e., always being an opening act there).</p> <p>Erelli was standing underneath a cross and commented that it always makes him feel a little strange when he performs in that sort of setting. He mentioned that he was raised Catholic and that, although that's no longer part of his life, he gets some of those familiar feelings (of guilt, if I remember correctly) whenever he is performing in a church.</p> <p>Mark told the story of his participation in the <a href="http://www.darwinsongproject.com/" target="_blank">Darwin Song Project</a>. As he wrote in his <a href="http://www.markerelli.com/index.php?page=news&display=958" target="_blank">April newsletter</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p>My other "live wire" moment came during my trip last month to England to take part in the <a href="http://www.darwinsongproject.com/">Darwin Song Project</a>. It sounds as much like a reality TV show as it does an artistic endeavor: eight folksingers from across the US and the UK holed up in an English country farmhouse for a week to collaborate on songs inspired by the life and work of Charles Darwin, in honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth. It was an amazing experience, I co-wrote two songs, and as a group we wrote about 18 songs in a week. We were to perform these songs for a sold-out crowd at the week's end, and the real kicker was that they'd be recorded for an eventual live DVD/CD release.</p> </blockquote> <p>He performed "Kingdom Come" which he described as starting with parasitic wasps and ending with strong agnosticism if not atheism.</p> <p>At some point towards the middle of the show he commented on the boys making it through the concert with aid from their Gameboys (DSs, actually). He said he was looking forward to the Gameboy stage with his son who at this point is at the stage of fascination with numbers and letters. "Not Alone" is one of my favorites from his most recent album, along with "Hope Dies Last" and "Delivered"; we were disappointed he didn't play "Hope Dies Last."</p> <p>Mark didn't bother to leave the stage for the encore. Someone requested "Congress Street" and Erelli was glad to get a request for a "deep cut." Someone else requested another song too (a "gospel song"). Mark vacillated at first but then took the advice to play both.</p> <p>Towards the end Erelli commented that our kids had made it through the whole show and took that as a good sign. As we left, he was sitting in the lobby selling cds. He shook my hand and thanked us for bringing the kids which he thought was cool.</p> <p>We really enjoyed the show and the intimate setting. or at least on the way (on mtv, vh1, nat'l radio). he wasnt originally in the line-up and showed up day of show b/c their gig in raleigh was canceled. </p> <p> we got lots of compliments on our show, however i dont think any of us felt really good about. jayson stunk up the joint, for sure. we had some good friends come out from greenville, so that was encouraging. 6 song set: bruce willis, wooden, weight of it all, days away, new nameless song, and finished with what's so fine. no technical difficulties. </p> <p> max is our man. look forward to ANY time we get to go back to wilson. </p> </blockquote> <p> </p> </article> <article> <h1>728B broad st. music - 13 dec 08</h1> <p>site admin — Sun, 14 Dec 2008 21:50:55 -0500</p> <p> From their <a href="http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=331815938&blogID=456368278" target="_blank">Myspace blog</a>: </p> <blockquote> <p> this was our 20th show (since we seriously started playing out in april). we're pretty excited about this little milestone, and are hoping for at least 20 more. maybe by then we'll have made enough money for a quality, full-length recording before 728b dissolves. </p> <p> this was our second time playing at broad st. music in new bern, and it is quickly becoming just about our favorite place to play. doug really knows how to take care of a band. he genuinely appreciates what independent bands are all about, and is supportive of what we're trying to do. if you're close to new bern, make sure you go support other shows there. he's got a good thing going. </p> <p> we were originally supposed to play first, in front of a local band and another out-of-town group.. however, when circumstances made it so that we couldnt arrive until 9:00, we got pushed back to last. we don't necessarily mind playing late, but felt pretty sure that, since we were the LEAST known band, a lot of people would leave before we got started. unfortunately, we were right. </p> <p> the first band was GOLIATH's PONY. young locals who brought all their friends. you could tell they and their buddies were having a really fun time - dancing and jumping around. it was good for doug to give them a chance to play. apparently they're all pretty big supporters of broad st and the bands that come through. we were pleasantly surprised by GP. </p> <p> next was WHAT'S GOOD, and - wow. talk about a good band. we've played with a lot, but this trio impressed the heck out of us. instrumental funk/blues/jazz/rock. fun to watch, and you can tell they enjoy their music. all three musicians were excellent. a must-see. no joke. hopefully we can hook up with them again soon in j-ville. </p> <p> as for our show, we played six songs. five of them (bruce willis, wooden, weight, fine, and the new nameless one) we've played i think at our last 3-4 shows. we added days away. no technical problems to report. like i said, most people left before we got started. but for those who stuck around, we REALLY appreciate it. we got a lot of positive feedback. </p> <p> our 20th show was also our last of 2008. </p> </blockquote> <p> </p> </article> <article> <h1>728B spazz haus - not finishing until 10:15 that night. the five songs were bruce willis, wooden, weight of it all, what's so fine, and the still as yet nameless song. no technical difficulties. </p> <p> after us was ryland bouchard - kind of mellow clean guitar and soft vocals that everyone was digging. after that was ODIST, and these were some funk rock, out-of-sight, make-you-want-to-move, very technically sound guys. actually, 2 guys and a girl (great drummer). we're hoping to play with them again next time they're in NC. I actually had a couple of tickets (that my mother-in-law picked up for me), but couldn't find anyone to go with me (Prentice was on his honeymoon and no one from Nashville could make the trip). Phreddy Wischusen, general manager of the Crofoot, told her that by getting the tickets for me she proved wrong all the late night talk show hosts with their jokes about mothers-in-law. The Crofoot is a fairly new and nice venue. I was standing right in front of the stage. Last time I did that was with Matt at Slint in Chicago. <a href="http://www.chrisbrokaw.com/" target="_blank">Chris Brokaw</a> opened the show. The dudes talking loudly behind me during Brokaw's set were annoying. The Shellac set was loose and enjoyable.
