In a new conversation for VARIETY’s “Actors on Actors” issue, Paul Anthony Kelly and Patrick Ball discuss the long years of auditions prior to becoming stars on the big screen, Kelly’s turn as John F. Kennedy Jr., the backlash LOVE STORY received, fan theories around THE PITT, how Ball’s parents (a nurse and paramedic) reacted to the show, learning from Noah Wyle, and more.

Kelly on his role as John F. Kennedy Jr. in “Love Story”:

Kelly: I had three weeks to prepare from when I was hired, which was not a lot of time. But Ryan Murphy and his team took all the thinking away. Once they hired me, they got me a dialect coach because I’m Canadian — I have a totally different speech pattern to John F. Kennedy Jr. I had to learn everything about him — the way he moves, the way he talks, the way he walks. It was so cool to put the blinders on and focus a thousand percent on one thing. I’d never had that experience of breathing life into an idea; I just wanted him to be a regular guy.

Kelly and Ball on almost giving up after years of auditions:

Kelly: It was 13 years of auditioning. A lot of noes, some close-to things, never really locking it in. I was thinking about giving it up, and then this opportunity came.

Ball: What did that 13 years look like?

Kelly: A lot of auditions, a lot of silence. I always knew this was what I wanted to do. I knew that if I stuck it out, eventually something would hit. But after about 13 years, you’re like, “Maybe this isn’t for me.”

Kelly and Ball on the finale of “The Pitt” and if he knows what is coming next:

Ball: We don’t get any information. So now that I saw the finale and thought it was amazing, I’m left hanging on the same cliff as everybody else. I have no idea what happens with Baby Jane Doe. Does Robby adopt Baby Jane Doe? That would go against a lot of the advice that he has given to Whitaker early in the year.

Kelly: Does he take his own advice though? He rides a motorcycle without a helmet, as a doctor.

Ball: He doesn’t make a habit of taking his own advice.

Ball on having an ER nurse mother and a paramedic father and their take on “The Pitt”:

They love it. I happened to be with my parents when I got asked to come to L.A. and do the screen test, and I got to read through some of the pilot episode with them. The first thing they said was “Oh, this medicine checks out. This is real medicine.” And they haven’t always felt that way: Oftentimes in hospital dramas, the demands of entertainment take precedence over the authenticity of medicine.

Kelly on living a normal life outside of being an actor:

Where I live, it allows me just to be home and regular. We’re in the Pacific Northwest. It’s just my wife and our new child — she’s like four months. It’s nice to be able to focus on family.

Kelly on the initial backlash from early photos of him as John F. Kennedy Jr.:

When we started filming, we did a screen test to see the coloring; those images were released, and there was a little bit of backlash over it. But that was kind of a good thing because it then showed how much people care about these two individuals. It tightened the grip on us to get it right.

Kelly and Ball on Ball being exclusively a theater kid prior to starring in “The Pitt”:

Ball: I did theater almost exclusively for about 15 years, traveling across the country, doing regional theater and learning how to tell a story with an audience. It took until about a year and a half ago, when “The Pitt” came along, to get my first swing at television.

2026 Tribeca Festival: Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes at the HAPPY HOURS Premiere

Once again, Dawson’s Creek co-stars Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes are giving the Millennials all the feels. The two old pals and current collaborators joined up at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of their film Happy Hours, which she also wrote and directed.

We have a few thoughts on their outfits, because we’re judgy that way.

KATIE HOLMES IN CHLOÉ

The first impulse is to call this a nightgown, but it owes a lot to throwback styles from the 1930s and ’40s. We’re seeing a lot of these old-school, bias-cut silk gowns in white and Champagne lately. Everyone wants to get their Jean Harlow on, it would seem. We don’t have an issue with the style (even if it’s not our fave), but we dislike the washed-out color and those goofy hanging cords. The Rockstuds make absolutely no sense at all.

JOSHUA JACKSON IN BRUNELLO CUCINELLI

In some ways, it’s bare minimum effort, but that’s the thing about menswear that so few male stars understand: with smart choices and a little swag, you can look chic and hot without going to too much trouble. We have no notes at all. While nothing here is particularly exciting, it’s a nice suit in a great color and it’s well styled with great shoes and a killer watch.

Tony Awards 2026: DEATH OF A SALESMAN Star Laurie Metcalf in Archival Christian Siriano

Holy shit, we’ve been blogging so long that Christian Siriano, the original Princess Puffysleeves himself, is now sending “archival” pieces onto the red carpet. As the first people to ever write about his fashion design, we’re proud, but we suddenly feel ancient. Anyway, here’s Laurie Metcalf, before and after she won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for Death of a Salesman.

Of course “archival” is an incredibly loose fashion term that usually just amounts to “we still have one of these in our showroom.” It’s only a nine-year-old dress, after all. We were going to put this one up to a vote, but she looks really great and we can’t see the point of nitpicking a gown that looks as good as this. She’s never been one for a lot of fuss and glam, so a simple, sparkly dress and a good pair of earrings was a smart way to go.

Tony Awards 2026: The Gentlemen Red Carpet Rundown

We have a TON of Tonys red carpet looks to discuss, so we’ll round up some of the more notable dude looks of the night, just to thin out our Tony folders a little. Join us, won’t you?

Adrien Brody in Saint Laurent

Why can’t he just stand like a normal person? We’ll have to begrudgingly admit that this looks pretty great on him. We’re loving the striped shirt. We’re waiting semi-patiently for this tucked-tie trend to die.

Ali Louis Bourzgui in Denzil Patrick

This is a gorgeous suit. After literally decades of saying that women shouldn’t match their eye makeup to their dress, we’re afraid we might have to make special dispensation here, because this looks great.

Ben Levi Ross in Maison Margiela

Understated chic.

Ben Platt

That is the most toned-down he’s ever been on a red carpet and not coincidentally it’s the best he’s looked. We’d have rec’d a white shirt.

Bowen Yang

The jacket is a little snug and the shirt is a little loose on him, but it’s a great look. Love the brooch.

Brandon Uranowitz

Very sharp. Love the tie; what little we can see of it.

Cheyenne Jackson

The suit’s fine, but we can’t sign off on that styling — specifically, the shoe-polish hair and brows. We don’t have an issue with any guy washing away the gray, but these flat from-the-bottle dye jobs look terrible.

Darren Criss in Pal Zileri

Gorgeous jacket.

Jeremy Pope in Robert Wun Couture

We can’t say the sleeve design or the gloves are really working for us, but it doesn’t matter because this bitch is serving and slaying.

VARIETY “Actors on Actors”: Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn on SCANDAL, IMPERFECT WOMEN And More

In a new conversation for VARIETY’s “Actors on Actors” issue, Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn reunite to discuss SCANDAL and how fans are still obsessed with their characters Olivia and Fitz (Olitz), if Olitiz is still together and making jam in Vermont, and how they felt about the show’s ending. The duo also talk about Washington’s impressive IMPERFECT WOMEN performance, being asked to run for president in real life, HACKS, LAW & ORDER, and more.

Washington and Goldwyn on people still being obsessed with Olitz:

Washington:People are so passionate about Olitz, still. Also, have you noticed this thing online where some people are like, “Now that I’m older and I watch the relationship, I’m not sure how healthy it is.” Have you seen any of that?

Goldwyn: They’re just figuring that out? Interesting!

Washington: They weren’t the healthiest couple. That doesn’t mean they weren’t madly in love, but they had some difficulties, which is why people loved it.

Washington and Goldwyn on what their “Scandal” characters are doing now:

Washington: People feel very strongly that they’re in Vermont, making jam and all that. Do you feel that way?

Goldwyn: I feel that Fitz and Olivia are together.

Washington: What are they doing?

Goldwyn: I feel that what we had at the root of it was very real, and it’s why we could never get away from it — as opposed to being something that was ultimately dysfunctional. I thought ultimately these two people were their answer to each other.

Washington: Do you feel like maybe they’re in couples therapy now?

Goldwyn: Yes, regularly! Because they know that’s what they have to do to survive. But I think Fitz spent some time in Vermont. He needed to get out of the toxic patterns.

Washington: Did he make jam on his own?

Goldwyn: I think Olivia probably taught him how to make jam, but then when she ate his jam, she’s like, “Your jam sucks!”

Washington: Your jam is terrible.

Washington and Goldwyn on Washington’s “Imperfect Women”:

Goldwyn: I am obsessed with “Imperfect Women.” You and Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara and Corey Stoll and Joel Kinnaman — all my favorite actors are on that show.

Washington: Elisabeth Moss found the book in 2019, and she knew right away that she wanted to play Mary. One of my favorite things about the book, which we have been able to capture in the show, is this idea that the show shifts perspective. When you’re first reading the book, it feels like it’s going to be an entire novel from Eleanor’s perspective. And then you turn a page and it says “Nancy” and you’re like, “Oh, now I’m going to get this story from the point of view of the dead lady!” And then it shifts again, and it’s Mary. We do that on the show. It meant that rather than having a call sheet that was like one, two, three of who’s the lead actor, we really had a show with three No. 1s. All three of us carry that show together.

Goldwyn: And your work is superb.

Washington and Goldwyn on Goldwyn’s role on “Hacks”:

Washington: You play such a jerk on “Hacks.”

Goldwyn: I was a massive fan. So when they asked me to do a part, I literally didn’t even read it. I was

like, “Please sign me up.” Bob Lipka, who is head of a media company — he’s just one of those guys. I can’t name names, but there are several of them who run these big companies.

Washington: He’s so mean. I want to know, is it inspired by somebody?

Goldwyn: So I did say once, and they were like [whispers], “Don’t say that.” I’ve known several of those kinds of guys, and I don’t have a judgment about them. Those jobs are tough. At the end of Season 5, Jean and I have this crazy scene where Bob Lipka steps to new heights — or depths, how- ever you want to look at it — in his efforts to rein in the brilliant Deborah Vance. It was a privilege to be a part of that show.

Washington and Goldwyn on Goldwyn’s turn in “Law & Order”:

Washington: Were you terrified to step into the iconic Sam Waterston role? I mean, those are such big shoes to fill, and he’s so beloved. Was that intimidating? Inspiring?

Goldwyn: It was inspiring. I was excited to do it. Sam was one of my acting heroes. I got to direct him once on “Law & Order,” 20-some years ago. I can’t fill Sam’s shoes; that’s impossible. But the character I play is a totally different guy; he’s just in the same job. And they’ve created a really interesting character, and the reason the show’s good is they still care about the writing so much.

EMILY IN PARIS Stars Lily Collins and Ashley Park at the 2026 French Open

Emily in Paris stars Lily Collins took a break from shooting and headed off to the French Open. Now, you may be asking why we’re assuming that they’re on a break from filming when they were spotted shooting scenes at the Grand Prix just last week. Well, we’ll tell you:

It’s because if they were shooting scenes, these would have to rate as the worst Emily in Paris costumes in the history of the show.

LILY COLLINS

Don’t get us wrong; they’re perfectly fine outfits for the so-called real world, but they don’t have that highly polished, super-matchy, attention-seeking vibe that the costumes for the show tend to have. Personally, we never seem to love it when a pair of shorts does its best to fool you into thinking it’s a skirt. There’s always one slightly off detail; in this instance, we think the waist hits too high to be paired with that top. A looser, more blouson style of top would have worked better. She’s always been pale, but we wonder if she’s not trying to get her Audrey look locked in before she starts shooting the biopic.

ASHLEY PARK IN ETRO

We don’t like this suit at all. As a design, it’s perfectly fine, but the style is kind of stale and the color does nothing for her. In addition, we think the accessorizing was a mistake. Neither the hat nor the sandals really go with it.

Tony Awards 2026: Rachel Zegler in Michael Kors Collection

Alright, let’s play another round of Pretend Stylist. This is something of an unofficial variation on an IN or OUT post because it starts from the assumption that the wearer in question doesn’t look bad. Evita star Rachel Zegler came to the Tonys to perform and to force us to ask the eternal question: Can a brown gown ever truly be chic?

Actually we lied. We’ve seen plenty of chic brown gowns in the last few years and we’d rate this as one of them. Kors is always very good at providing classic designs that flatter the wearer. Having said that, we find ourselves hungry for a little sparkle here. A sequin or two, some beading — literally anything to lend this design the glam that it’s lacking. Of course she needs a pendant. We feel like that goes without saying, but since we get paid to say it, we’ll say it. A bright green one, we’re thinking. In fact, given how understated the gown is, we feel like she could’ve gotten away with several statement pieces – a cuff, a cocktail ring, some hoops. It’s just kind of… lacking. What would you do to this look to zhuzh it up a little?

Kim Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian at Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix

Because the Kardashians are like celebrity kudzu, Kim Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian are taking over the Monaco Grand Prix to cheer on Kim’s boyfriend Lewis Hamilton.

Far be it for us to decide what’s appropriate to wear to the Grand Prix, although these efforts do strike us as a bit much. But to their credit, while they might be a little overdressed, they’re not badly dressed, all things considered. Yeah, we don’t like the footwear choices for either of them and the lace hem of Khloe’s dress looks chintzy, but we’re not mad at these looks. Those gas station sunglasses on Kim aren’t great either, but we have no doubt that they cost more money than all the sunglasses in these pictures combined.

Idris Elba Covers British GQ’s Heroes Issue

In a new cover story for British GQ’s Heroes Issue, Idris Elba reflects on moving beyond playing cool guys and superheroes to focus on tackling knife crime, community work and getting comfortable playing his most personal role yet: himself.

Idris when asked about the Bond rumours: “It was never legit. It was always just a rumour.”

Elba says fans simply took it and ran with it: “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing. James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

He also believes that changing Bond isn’t really necessary: “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.” Elba starts the interview by doing an acting exercise in which he pretends to be a fried egg. He had done the same exercise years earlier and, while the other boys were afraid of looking stupid, Elba cared about only one thing: whether he looked believable:

Idris Elba thought he would follow a Sidney Poitier-style trajectory as a serious actor taking only serious roles. That didn’t happen, but through directing projects like Yardie and an upcoming adaptation of This Is How It Goes, he says he’s finally constructing the career he imagined at the start: “If directing wasn’t an option for me, I’m not sure how long I’d be acting. I want to be inspired again. I think the inspiration comes from watching other actors and moulding and getting people to say it differently.”

Elba uses his unpredictable career to his advantage. Other actors might avoid the kind of role he takes on simply for fun, such as in the deeply camp Masters of the Universe, in which he plays Eternia’s moustachioed head of weaponry, Man-At-Arms: “I did that for me, man. I remember taking it, thinking, Uhhhh… I suppose at my age, with the kind of things I’ve done, and the kind of things I’m doing, can I get away with being in a film like that? I thought, F*ck it, why not?

“Talk about recasting. (Man-At-Arms is canonically ginger.) I was a bit conscious about it. But then I was like, What are you talking about?! Man-At-Arms could be any colour! He’s got green legs, for God’s sake!”

Now, Idris Elba finds himself being hailed as a hero. Knighted in 2026 for his work with young people and anti-knife crime campaigning, he also fronted the BBC documentary Our Knife Crime Crisis: “It’s a massive contradiction to what I said earlier. I just found myself front and centre, speaking up.”

It started with a rant on Instagram in 2019, when Idris Elba felt overwhelmed by the constant news of young people killing each other. From there, it snowballed:
“Listening to the reports every day – it was hopeless. It was almost, if I was a young person, like, ‘Bruh, I could carry a knife, and no one would know. I could stab someone, and no one would know.’ Because it just seemed so hopeless. And I just thought to myself, Well, I get to stand on a soapbox on Graham Norton all day and talk about stuff, wear a T-shirt and everyone wants to buy it, whatever it is, and like, I should be saying something. I’ve got kids. If anything happened to my kids I’d be f*cking devastated. So that was it. It wasn’t like ‘Oh I want to campaign.’ It was, ‘Is no one gonna say anything?’”

The public discourse around knife crime also hit Elba where it hurt: pop culture: “I’m a DJ. I make music. I could hear this nonsense.”

He says, unbidden, that the word “hero” sits uncomfortably with him: “I’m just an actor that has got all these ambitions. I struggle with it, a little bit. The responsibility, accepting it, like, Yes! I’m an upstanding hero! I’m a role model! I’m not. I’m imperfect, massively.”

“That line, that cusp, is hard to maintain: you’re either a hero, or you’re not – which is it? And I sort of sit in the middle. I didn’t ever chase being a knight. Or chase being a sort of public hero – that’s not what I’m chasing.”

Tony Awards 2026: FALLEN ANGELS Star Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale

Fallen Angels star Rose Byrne may not have snagged the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play, but at least she stepped out onto the red carpet with husband Bobby Cannavale looking like a million bucks.

Two million bucks, even.

He looks fine. There’s no point in over-analyzing a classic formal menswear look. Our only criticism is the grooming. Bobby, you can’t sport the stubble and expect it to look sexy anymore. Sorry. Past a certain age, it just makes you look like you’re on a bender. As for her, it’s a gorgeous gown, but those hanging straps are just awful and we don’t understand why we’re seeing so many of them lately. They don’t offer much in the way of a visual and they would seem to be an enormous pain in the ass to haul around all night.
