We went on a family vacay when I was 10
to chill in the Grand Canyon and New Mexico
We stopped at a gift shop on an ‘Injun’ Reservation
and my parents encouraged me to buy ‘a bag of kewl looking rocks’
and a gadget called ‘a dream catcher.’

I asked the old Indian man behind the counter
‘What does this gizmo do?’
He said, ‘Hang this above your bed.
It shall capture all of the bad dreams + nightmares
and only let the chill-ass dreams in2 ur head
while u sleep.”

I thought this was ‘fucking stupid’
but my parents bought it anyways so that I would
have something to always remember our vacation.

I didn’t touch the dreamcatcher for years, but then
when I was going through a zany fashion era,
I decided 2 use it as a necklace
but part of me really started to believe that
this Indian gadget was really working.

My dreams were coming true
Was about to start school at a relevant design program in the city
Attending tons of cool shows
Hooking up with hi level members of the local scene
Reading tons of cool blogs every day
Finally feeling like my wardrobe was ‘complete’
Music was ‘free’ on the internet [via google search]
Everything just felt ‘right.’

If I just wore this dreamcatcher for the rest of my life,
none of my nightmares would manifest themselves.
I wouldn’t end up a mainstreamer in a desk job
I wouldn’t have a husband+kids who I resent
I wouldn’t gain weight + look old.
I would never die

The dreamcatcher had become a part of me
It protected me
It was more than just a zany accessory
It gave me hope, and it made me believe I could do anything.
The dreamcatcher kept me safe.

Don’t be afraid to dream.
There’s nothing wrong with ‘being a dreamer.’

With feedback like this + git changesets we’ve decided to go all the way with drefile (“an automatic, chronological file organizer”). Now a fully forkable, watchable, cloneable, mergeable, fast-forwardable, cherry-pickable GitHub project.

Again, “It requires OS X, MacPorts, and RubyGems. If you don’t know what that means you may still find this useful but will need a programmer friend to install it for you.”

Standing Waves

A standing wave, also known as a stationary wave, is a wave that remains in a constant position. This phenomenon can occur because the medium is moving in the opposite direction to the wave, or it can arise in a stationary medium as a result of interference between two waves traveling in opposite directions.

Standing waves appear whenever waves are confined to a finite region. Standing waves always manifest as a logarithmic spiral which can be described through the Golden Ratio and is called a golden spiral.

drefile: an automatic, chronological file organizer

Felt like releasing some software today. This is a quick tool I wrote for myself several months back + have come to rely on it to automatically keep my Desktop cleared + files organized.

Every few minutes drefile copies all files on your Desktop to a folder such as ~/Documents/2009-06-June/26-Friday, prepending a timestamp (like 20090626.1310) to the filename. Use:

Put files on your Desktop, and in a few minutes they will be “drefiled”
Use the “Today” alias on your Desktop to go to today’s folder
Type dday to go to today’s directory
Type dmonth to go to this month’s directory
Type drefile file to manually timestamp + move a file

It requires OS X, MacPorts, and RubyGems. If you don’t know what that means you may still find this useful but will need a programmer friend to install it for you.
