Camden New Jersey, ranked America’s second most dangerous city in 2010 and its most dangerous place to live in 2009 – is letting half its police force go.

As one of America’s poorest cities with a median income of just over 26k, (by margin of error variations, it may be the poorest) the majority of the city’s policing budget comes from a state aid package – a package that’s been slashed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie, who vetoed a bill that would raise taxes on the state’s millionaires to raise funds for essential services. As a result, there’s no money left to pay for a police force for already running far behind the drugs dealers and gangs that in fact  run this impoverished city.

In an ad taken out by the city’s Fraternal Order of Police, officers predict that the city will become, “a living hell.”

County prosecutors also expected dark days to come, or as one put it, “It’s going to be a hard lift. We’re going to prepare for the worst.”

50 year old Peter Solomon isn’t happy with the treatment he received at the NY Nassua County Jail in 2007 – and so he’s decided to sue.

While being held on charges of menacing, jailers grew concerned about Solomon’s mental state and had him transferred to a medical ward for observation. While in the medical ward in the deep of night, a rat emerged from a hole in his mattress and bit his penis. Solomon says county officials knew of their vermin problem and put him in with the rats because he is black.

County officials deny this allegation, and say it may only have been a mouse, and not a rat, which bit the complainant in a sensitive area. Furthermore, officials say no stitches were needed and injuries were largely psychological in nature – so what’s the big deal anyway?

A judge ruled on Thursday that Solomon’s lawsuit may proceed to court.

The collective force of a stadium full of Seattle Seahawks fans celebrating Marshawn Lynch’s electric 67 yard run to the end zone caused a local earthquake that was registered by a local seismograph to be in the 1 to 2 magnitude range.

The director of a local seismic research station commented on the force of the quake, saying, “You probably would have felt it very easily if you were outside the stadium.”

Mark Moody of Manhattan is suing the city of New York for $400 000 over an incident this month that left him handcuffed and dumped in a psych ward.

Moody, who smokes on his window ledge (on the second floor) to minimize the smell of smoke in his apartment was having a cigarette earlier this month when a police car screeched to a stop below him. Two police officers got out and asked Moody if he was about to commit suicide, to which the 40 year old lawyer replied, “If I was going to commit suicide, this would be a pretty dumb place to do it. If I jumped from here, I’d just sprain my ankle.”

Police insisted that the man come down to talk, but Moody refused – which led to the arrival of 4 more police cars and 3 ambulances and to police officers storming his apartment, handcuffing him and dragging him by force to a local psychiatric hospital.

Taken to Beth Israel Medical Centre, the on-duty psychiatrist spoke to Moody for about 3 minutes, before writing discharge papers and apologizing on behalf of the city.
