BN Cabinet loses to ‘vote of conscience’ in submarine motion

NOV 12 — The everlasting Barisan Nasional (BN) government appears to have lost its first vote in Parliament since it was first formed — which is some time in prehistory where all universal truths were first decided.

However, BN leaders were quick to deny that this was due to a loss-of-confidence in the coalition and merely an insignificant matter.

"After all, it was a motion tabled by one of our backbenchers, so it is still technically a win for BN," said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dubel Spik.

Nick Griffin for PM... of Malaysia

OCT 29 — Ahh, so yes, they let Nick Griffin, the leader of the “racist” British National Party, on BBC’s "Question Time." What was the result? A record audience of eight million viewers, edging out even the titanic following for "Strictly Come Dancing", and 3,000 new members for the far-right party.

All that achieved by broadcasting a man, allowed just a few minutes in the hour-long show, who twitched all night and talked about Winston Churchill’s “Islamophobia” and wanting to see Britain return to its innocent days when it was 99 per cent white because it is apparently tragic when a “unique human genome becomes extinct.”

The solution to all our problems? Get people to sit in a room together... and wait

OCT 14 — So a couple of days ago we had a hotshot from Hong Kong’s hotshotting Independent Commission Against Corruption giving hottershotter local graft busters the thumb’s up for having more panels than a solar car.

Tony Kwok praised the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for having such committees as the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board, Special Committee on Corruption, Complaints Committee, Operations Review Panel and Corruption Consultation and Prevention Panel, a system which he said “very few” countries have.

Apparently, that was meant to show how Malaysia was in the superior minority, rather than inferior minority. Because obviously, when you have more and more people telling you how to do things, it is better.

SEPT 5 — I’ve figured it out. Yes, I have. The whole problem here is that people are misinformed. Everything is just a misunderstanding.

That’s how the organisers didn’t know about a cow’s head being brought to the protest against the Hindu temple in Shah Alam. Somebody must have gotten his dates wrong and thought it was Hari Raya Korban instead of Puasa. So he brought the best part of the cow to the party. Just unfortunate it turned out to be a party about a Hindu temple.

AUG 26 — Crime rate up? Economy down? Environment dying? Corruption thriving? Yes, Malaysia needs a superhero.

But as we know, superheroes don't exist and even if they did, they dress in getups that would give PAS Youth a fit.

Still, at such a time like this, 1 Malaysia needs 1 Hero. Surely this man must be the 1 and 1ly Usain Bolt.

AUG 18 — One really can’t be blamed for not knowing his or her Latin. After all, it is an established fact that grasping English itself is already beyond a nation of people who have only been using the language for nearly two centuries.

If one cannot be expected to pass an English exam before leaving school, or to learn math and science in the language, it must surely be unfair to expect a mere reporter for Malaysia’s No. 1 broadsheet to know what ultra vires means. Surely he can’t be held responsible for failing to comprehend what is practically a dead language — only lawyers speak it, and we want them dead.

Until now. Thanks to the Internet, we can all be overnight experts on any subject, from global warming to using Coke to clean toilets and yes, Latin.

AUG 6 — Did you hear the one about Cristiano Ronaldo being uninsurable after crashing his Ferrari? Yes, after wrecking the £200,000 (RM1.2 million) sports car in January this year, insurers in Britain basically said that it was impossible to insure the Portuguese diver, err, driver.

First of all, he is under 25, which ups the premium in England, and the accident flags the new Real Madrid poster boy as a high-risk driver. But the former Manchester United superstar can be expected to have several other Premiership stars in his car at any given time and the payout for loss of earnings and obligations to sponsors would cause the premium to go above the actual cost of the car.

JULY 30 — The impasse at the Sekolah Long Abdullah (SLA) primary school took another twist today as controversially-appointed Hall Monitor P. Sanggam accused his predecessor X. Kumaresan of impersonating him by using his special colour pencils and still continuing to sign off as Hall Monitor.

The limited-edition box of 48 Staedtler Lunas contains special pencils in colours that are not available in other smaller boxes and can only be used by the Hall Monitor but the box has not been surrendered by Kumaresan since the May 7 morning assembly where the latter was unceremoniously dumped as Hall Monitor in a chaotic scuffle that seemed to involved armed policemen.

A MALAYSIAN LAUGH with Jerome Martin

JULY 13 — He still commands pomp and ceremony. As he walks in on the red carpet, there are boys banging on kompangs, bunga mawar, a private VIP room to have tea and even a silat presentation before the starting of the event.

Except that this isn't anything like a five-star hotel or the Putra World Trade Centre. And there are no movers and shakers of the country or the world present here at the Port Dickson Golf & Country Club. On top of that, it's said that he hates golf.

Instead of a presidential guard and director-generals, if not Cabinet ministers, accompanying him, his wingman is Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, the former Kedah Menteri Besar who was sacked from his presidency of the International Islamic University shortly after following Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed in resigning from Umno.
