It’s the media, Shafie!

NOV 16 — Did you know that Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal is the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) chairman? For those who said yes, can you name me one piece of news about the CPA that you've read about since he was elected in August last year?

I thought so. Of course, the first problem is that the CPA isn't all that well-known an entity in Malaysia in the first place. But surely part of the point of lobbying — or whatever it is politicians and diplomats do — to win Malaysia the chairmanship is to both increase the standing of the country in the CPA and vice versa. Despite Malaysia having the chair, there has hardly been any media buzz since Shafie first took up the post.

NOV 9 — On the one hand, there is Sir Alex F***-the-Ref, on the other is Carlo Ancelotti. One says he lost to Liverpool and Chelsea and drew with Sunderland because of the man in black. The other actually did the job of beating both Liverpool and Manchester United with clean sheets.

It is difficult to find a more astute mind in the game than Ancelotti. He won league, cup and European titles in eight years in charge of Milan — to take the Fergie comparison further, even one of the greatest managers English football has seen took seven years to win his first league title — before moving to Chelsea where his side, after edging Man United 1-0 last night, look dominant in the current Premiership race.

NOV 5 — What do fireworks and a big bonfire each year on this night mean? Aside from some inherent, nearly prehistoric ignition of pyromanic glee in children, the only (tenuous) link to Guy Fawkes, who is “celebrated” on this date in the UK, is the fact that our villain attempted to blow up Parliament.

Are children then also encouraged to exercise such arsonic fervour when they grow up? No, that would be too simplistic. Instead, what is being invoked here is probably the link between fire, hell and the demonic.

OCT 22 — I mean, seriously, does anyone really need to point out how Rafael Benitez is in trouble? Four defeats on the trot, Liverpool's worse run since 1987, is solid enough so there's no need to waste column inches saying, "Benitez really needs to work a miracle against Manchester United this weekend" or "The team relies too much on Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres."

These are bloody obvious statements. Obvious and, in the case of the latter, dumb.

But it is in fact true. The star of the Young British Artists generation that popped up in the 90s had just only been discovered by ad mogul-turned-art collector Charles Saatchi and was exhibiting without much fanfare as the tabloid press — usually of a tut-tutting sort — were only interested in ridiculing the young 'uns pretensions of being artists.

OCT 6 — The past week has seen the UK media in a frenzy over this headline: “The Sun Says: Labour’s lost it.”

After a dozen years of supporting Labour, it withdrew its support for under-siege Prime Minister Gordon Brown ahead of a general election that must be called by June 2010.

Perhaps in Malaysia, where cynicism and indeed, scoffing mockery of print media is ubiquitous, a newspaper making such a proclamation about any political party would be dismissed as mere gimmick.

OCT 1 — It's two months into the season, and Rafael Benitez still doesn't know what is his best team. In usual circumstances, this is not a reason to panic.

But the Spaniard has had five seasons to shape his squad, with only Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard left from the Champions' League-winning side of 2005. With rightback Glen Johnson the only new signing playing first eleven football, there is little to suggest that Benitez needs time to get to know his players.

SEPT 21 — It has become all too easy for audiences today to dismiss anything that does not fit into their worldview as “spin”. Hell, it even sounds smart to talk as if you can’t be fooled by the apparent spin doctor.

Even the most basic news story can be accused of having an agenda for omitting certain facts or misrepresenting the context. This is probably true but ignores the fact that no matter how "neutral" one tries to be, there will always be an element of authorial licence. Mere words can already give rise to major differences in not just articles, but film, radio and any other form of modern media.

SEPT 14 — It was the weekend where the pretenders would have their Top Four credentials put to the test. Headline writers were salivating at the prospect of both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City putting one up over the established Big Four in the guise of Manchester United and Arsenal respectively.

You could not have scripted the buildup — one team plays the champions, the other plays the team that seems most vulnerable to dropping out of the top four places. There were grudge matches all over the place especially with Man City having poached Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure from Arsenal, who both left under acrimonious circumstances.

There was also Dimitar Berbatov keen to prove a point after a dismal first season since leaving his former stomping ground of White Hart Lane.

SEPT 8 — For better or worse, the world believes in the right of retaliation. Criticise me, and I will mock you back. Fire a rocket at me, and I will roll in the tanks. Launch a nuclear warhead at me, and I will assure our mutual destruction.

And perhaps that is why Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein thought it a wise idea to use the “pig-headed” defence for the cow-head protestors in the continuing debacle over the Section 23, Shah Alam Hindu temple relocation issue.
