The third album from the avant-death/doom ensemble Ehnahre and the follow up to the critically acclaimed 2010 album, Taming The Cannibals, exploring their unique fusion of hellish death-doom, blackened prog, avant-jazz and experimental modern music composition, to earth-scorching result.

As terrifying as it is haunting, 'Old Earth' is another intensely challenging and completely unique offering from Ehnahre, who still sound like nothing else in the metal/avant underground. It has some of the most bleakly beautiful, burnt-out moments the band has brought us so far, and those jazz-influenced passages in the middle of the album are pretty goddamn stunning. Might be difficult listening for some, but Ehnahre's otherworldly heaviness is immensely rewarding for the adventurous listener.

Rather this is immaculately produced and performed music created first and foremost for its creator's pleasure, and then, as an afterthought, released for the enjoyment of a select few masochists who lament the passing of Khanate and consider Neurosis a touch on the soft side. Utterly non-commercial, this is music crafted purely as a work of art and everything from the tar-stained production job to the amazing artwork speaks of care and love being lavished on this dizzyingly horrific record. Horned Almighty's work has been described as "black & roll," which is a valid description because thrashy tracks such as "In Jubilation and Disgust," "Blessing the World in Pestilence," and "Fountain of a Thousand Plagues" combine black metal themes and black metal intensity with the sort of high-speed infectiousness that Motorhead are known for. Motorhead, arguably, were the first thrash metal/speed metal band; they were greatly influenced by punk during a pre-Slayer, pre-Megadeth, pre-Metallica era in which punk was still being ignored by most headbangers. Headbangers who like being reminded of black metal's punk and thrash metal/speed metal roots should give a close listen to this corrosive sledgehammer of an album. - All Music4

THE WRETCHED END was formed in 2008 as creative collaboration between Samoth (Emperor/ Zyklon) and Cosmo (Mindgrinder). Samoth and Cosmo have previously worked together on the infamous deathpunk project Scum. Cosmo has also played with Zyklon on bass when Zyklon toured Europe as special guest for Morbid Angel in 2001. The two have long spoken about collaborating on an extreme metal project. Most of the material for the debut album was composed throughout 2008, and by spring 2009 a full pre-production consisting of 11 tracks was recorded. In the summer of 2009, Swede Nils Fjellstrom (Dark Funeral, In Battle, Aeon) was confirmed as the drummer. The drums were successfully recorded in Strand Studio, Oslo, September 2009. The album recording continued through the end of 2009 and was completed in the first half of 2010. The recording line-up consists of Samoth on lead and rhythm guitar, Cosmo on lead and rhythm guitar, bass and vocals and Nils Fjellstrom on drums.

Failure is not an option for this trio since "Ominous" isn't afraid of showing its true intentions right from the start. Armed with a deadly sound production, this project's debut album presents a mixture of modern Thrash/Death Metal with some Black Metal touches. Sammoth proves that he is a talented guitarist once again, while Cosmo accompanies him with his lethal six string weapon (as well as his four string) and Fjellstrom completes this disharmonic orchestra with his sick drumming. Of course, the comparison between this project and ZYKLON is kind of unavoidable, since you will find some common elements in the music of these two bands. The fact is that ZYKLON is a bit more chaotic, while Sammoth has paid more attention on creating solid as fuck song structures here, with "Ominous" being a pretty "concrete" album. - Metal Temple4

With the main aims of spreading the Word of Satan and to raise Torment over this Earth, Corpus Christii has been releasing works of audio terror since 1998. Being the first Portuguese band to expand internationally in a more broad way than had been done before, Corpus Christii have reached out to a vastly spread audience on all continents through their releases but also through numerous live-gigs across Europe. The back-catalogue consists of 12 releases in various formats (tape, CD, vinyl) of which 5 are full-length albums. The band has passed through different Eras in the creations, the first one being the more primitive side with Saeculum Domini. Thereafter going into a more technical state with The Fire God and most recently, the conceptual Torment-trilogy where dynamics and built in symbolisms reflect themselves throughout the lyrics as well as the music.

A new Black Metal opus sees the darkness of the world. Cold, raw, and with the bizarre aura of an everlasting funeral, Throne Of Katarsis delivers their requiem in honor of the final darkness. During three long nights the seven rites of this album were recorded. The seance was performed in darkness and with poisoned minds, and with a dedication closer to a possession. All instruments and vocal's were recorded live in the studio, in order to capture the aura the band creates during their evocations. A couple of guitar leads and also chuch organ were added to the mix. The band now consists of four individuals, previously being a demonic duo for seven years. The full line up is now: Infamroth (voice, guitar and church organ), Skinndod (guitar), Sanrabb (bass) and Vardalv (drums). The album title Ved Graven can be translated to At the Grave, and is by far the darkest material written by the band to this date. This is the their third studio album, and continues the march towards the funeral.

Description

American extreme metal royalty returns with their first new studio album in eight years. The self-titled recording features the newly expanded quartet with an all-star array of guest musicians. Belgian artist Kris Verwimp handled the album's surreal packaging while the sonic aspects were directed by the band with mixing controlled by J.T. Longoria (King Diamond, Solitude Aeternus).

Lyrically, I am concentrating more on Sumerian-based occult themes of magick and mythology versus the Celtic aspect of my previous writings, which was heavily expressed on the last few Absu studio albums. Musically speaking, the material will be quite similar to Tara, but with more of a 70s progressive/ psychedelic texture within it.

Never failing to surprise, Saga O Neuchopitelne Ryzosti begins with one of the catchiest introductions to date, following the classic cascade of instruments leading up to some guitar work that shares more than a couple of genes with "Kashmir" by LED ZEPPELIN. It is HYPERBOREAN DESIRE's ability to fuse classic rock elements with traditional Black Metal which make them stand out from the usual crowd. Radalf's vocals sound like a less emotion Varg Vikernes. The opening track really shows his more aggressive side, with all guns drawn. At the 3:14 mark, he utilises inhuman screams, shrieks and some deep growling for more kicks, to create what can only be described as a menacing feeling. Manifest Vedomi features some rather harmonised chanting by Radalf, a la Garm from early ULVER. At exactly 2:08, some weird circus theme music is played on a keyboard, asking the question, Is this a joke, or are they actually serious? I cannot help but feel that HYPERBOREAN DESIRE do not take things too seriously, which will either incite hate or respect from the Metal community. - Metal Observer4

All the influences and eras of the band tie together beautifully to create an album which crowns the bands career to date, culminating in the highlight track of the album for me "Hamaran Soutajat" - a song that sums up the greatness of this underrated bands' career in just over 6 minutes. The folk influences take the forefront for the fourth track "Loitsulaulu", with a beefy chorus that would rouse even the most stoic of folk-hating metallers. In fact, the album as a whole is packed with huge choruses, as well as mellow acoustic interludes, touching melodies and a stroke of sadness that stains the overall feel of the release - a wholesome vibe that is a mile away from your usual mass produced major label nonsense. - Metal Crypt4

Musically, "Mrtva Komora" has everything to offer a Black Metal band could grant: blistering riffs, ugly screeched vocals (but not too screechy) and darkly rapid drums. The drums, however, are what makes this album interesting. Like METALLICA's "St. Anger", the drums have a METALLICA crashing sound that makes it sound like the drummer took two trashcans every once in a while and banged them together. This creates a unique sound that goes well with the vocals and guitars, which change from extremely fast Black Metal chords to a more Hard Rock vibe. Songs like "Strojirensky Sbirae" and "Plosna Ratizace Plzni" are strictly Black Metal for their speed and drumming. Other tracks like "Uhlavsky Kanalizaeni Sbirae" and "Pod Tihou Tmy" are much more along the Rock n' Roll riffs heard from bands like KHOLD or DARK FORTRESS. There's also a few quieter moments like on the title track where a creepy keyboard plays in the background of the music, adding a grim atmosphere, and then everything gets very morose as only the drums and vocals perform, making a very good use of the horror elements Black Metal has to offer. - Metal Observer4

You know that you're going to be served with something derivative here, and there are some agonizing sound gremlins in places, but there are also moments which are genuinely cool and revivifying. It's also a release that feels 'authentic'; if stories I've heard about Colombian black metallers are true, this was probably a labour of love, a very honest endeavour into which the bands have poured their diabolical, withered hearts. You can tell that's the case when, while listening, you realise how much of a riot a live show by these terrorisers of the ears would be. To my mind, it's awesome that this release exists for fans and enthusiasts, and I send all strength and support to these projects for the future. - Hierophant Nox3

While emphasizing minimalism, Shever are by no means poor musicians. In fact, their ability to really build up songs and gradually increase the intensity, as in the massive 'Souls Colliding' reflects their instinct for writing compelling, yet scary, doom metal. The vocals are primarily harsh, but at times the growls and screams are supplemented with an almost introspect 70s psychedelic rock type of singing which, needless to say, suits the atmosphere of the heavy and doom-laden, repetitive music on this album. In the more sludgy and deliberately unpleasant end of the doom metal spectrum, Shever's Rituals is not for everyone. But, if you like your doom metal bleak and truly doom-laden, then chances are that you will really enjoy this album - especially, the three last tracks are no less than phenomenal. - Sea of Tranquility4

Antiquus Scriptum (Portual) shares an appreciation of the experimental with "avant-garde black metal" band The Firstborn. The founding member Sacerdos is of course a member of Firstborn (previously Firstborn Evil), the other members have formed/joined several Death metal bands.
These demos may be considered less mature than the Firstborn albums, but the raw energy and total excess makes them just as exciting to hear, if not, much more so!
The drum machine can go blisteringly fast, keyboards form a strong element and are used in a variety of ways (from orchestral to folk); guitars are a wall of raw power. And then the vocals. The vocals are Wild! On first play they sounded almost like Sacrilege.. high punky wails! But totally fitting for the musical chaos. There are also sung, choral parts.
This is a unique collection, and while the description may read like a mess this band manage to bring it together with some skill. This material certainly deserved to be re-released and rediscovered.

It contains the only recordings by Antiquus Scriptum: "Abi in Malam Pestem" and "In Pulverem Reverteris". Just as the front cover depicts, this is a massive orgy of sounds. And recommended.

It should be noted that the music here is not overly fast Black Metal in the vein of Sargeist or Marduk. Some tracks even feel like they have a Black n' Roll feel to them with the amount of melodies put into the rhythms, such as on "Building Cathedrals." Perhaps this is part of the band's 'hypnotic' quality because the music is quite captivating on this track, no matter how repetitive. The closing "Timeless Nothingness" is more of a very long ambient piece that features no guitars, drums, or vocals, so some may feel it is a bit of a letdown as far as showing off a massive instrumental epic that could give groups like The Project Hate a run for their money. On the other hand- for the sake of ambiance- the chiming bells and funeral synth is VERY effective, but for almost ten minutes it may go on a bit too long. Still, altogether these tracks make a fun collection that avoids tradition and mixes things up a bit. It may not be as sonically aggressive as Portal's work- an experimental Death Metal group- but they will achieve a high level of interest among those who like Black Metal in general. - Brutalism4

This last ever recording of CEREMONIUM was the one, in which innovation, heaviness and the band's tendency to take a couple of more progressive steps musically, clashed somewhat perfectly - and I for one would have hoped to see some more continuum from them back then, to their already promising career. Well, it never happened but at least we have now got this absolutely killer compilation of all CEREMONIUM's studio recording in our hands, which should make the coming days of most of us underground Death Metal fans a bit happier from now on, I guess.
