Acheron have been around for quite some time - more than 10 years to be precise. Their albums, while showing some development each time, still remain items of acquired taste. I doubt that anyone could realistically listen to them consistently... it always saddens me when I spend more time reading the lyrics than actually listening to the music itself. Picking up the pace a bit would do wonders for this band and I hope that they do so on their next opus. Otherwise they may still be left in the shadows of their own small and surely "cult" following. The usual elements you'd expect from an Acheron release are all firmly in place here - midpaced catchy death metal driven by straightfoward drums (provided here by current band-whore extraordinaire Richard Christy, who delivers a much more subtle peformance than his more famous drum-wankery on his material with Death and Control Denied), and of course Vincent Crowley's rough barking vocals. The guitar work is mostly quite simple until the lead breaks appear, at which point Michael Estes is free to burst out with some serious shredding solo work. And of course, there's the intro's. Some may argue that they're overdone, but they were a very large part of Acheron's charm, and it's somewhat saddening that the band no longer does this. - Metal Crypt3

I just watched the new GG Allin and the Murder Junkies video, "Savage South: Best of 1992 Tour." Let me answer the first question that probably popped into your mind: No, he does not shit and fling it at anyone. It's three shows (Atlanta, Austin and San Antonio) and the video is full of mayhem, strippers on stage, fights with the crowd, GG getting' naked and pissing everyone off, GG pounding his head repeatedly with the microphone for blood, and generally doing lewd and gross stuff. Why did GG behave this way? Maybe because his public hair sticks out farther than his tiny dick? Dunno, but play this one for your parents, they'd be stoked. - Thrasher Magazine4

The dominant atmosphere combines a sense of impending insanity with sexual deviancy and a large dollop of occultism, creating a dark and troubling misanthropic sojourn that is relatively unique. The final track is probably the most musical, as it is centred on a guitar arpeggio, but no such concessions to convention are present elsewhere on this deeply troubling disk. The accompanying video of "Invocation" shows a Satanic ritual in all its kitchsy glory. Alcest - that is music from another world, a world that is real, but that exists beyond ours and cannot be grasped by our senses. A world where all appearances - trees, glades, streams - emit a pearly light and where a faraway and celestial music fills the air like sweet perfume. A world inhabited by infinitely benevolent and protective beings of light, communicating in a wordless 'language' directly from one soul to another. A world where the soul knows neither pain nor sickness nor sorrow, but is filled with a deep peace and an ineffable bliss. A world that lies 'before' and 'after,' 'beside' and 'behind' our world and the awareness of which stills mankind's fears of death.

This world is no dream and no fantasy. Neige, the creative mind of Alcest, knows it - he has experienced it and keeps memories of how it revealed itself to him in the form of esoteric experiences in his early life. Alcest is his medium to come to terms with these memories and to share them with others.

"Les voyages de l'ame" ("The Journeys of the Soul") is Alcest's third album and contains the quintessence of the group's creative work to date. While "Le secret," the debut EP from 2005, was the key to the world of Alcest, "Les voyages ..." unites everything that characterises Alcest in terms of concept and music. While an epic composition such as "La ou naissent les couleurs nouvelles" would have found its place also on "Ecailles de lune," "Beings of Light" with its blazing character reminds of the ground-breaking "Le secret." On the other hand, "Autre temps" - the album's first single to which there is also an impressive and visually stunning video clip - is a prime example for the melodic and catchy side of Alcest that initially came to the fore on the band's debut album "Souvenirs d'un autre monde." Something that is common to all of the songs, however, is the predominant feeling of euphoria and bliss, always subtly overshadowed by melancholia and yearning. A feeling akin to that which you experience when you think about the otherworld of Alcest that awaits us all.

Not only are Negura Bunget considered as one of the most original and most creative groups of the current Black Metal scene, the Romanian collective also has garnered an excellent reputation as a live act, being amongst the most active exponents of their trade. In the last three years alone, the band has played some 180 concerts all over Europe. Hence, the time is more than ripe for an appropriate audio-visual testimony of Negura Bunget's extraordinary qualities as a live act.
"Focul Viu" (Romanian for "Living Fire") is the title of Negura Bunget's first live DVD featuring a professional recording of a complete 90-minute performance in Bucharest in January 2008. "Focul Viu" is especially valuable because of the fact that it presents Negura Bunget in its classic line-up of Hupogrammos, Sol Faur, and Negru. As the band is probably never going to perform in this line-up again, "Focul Viu" is a must-have for every fan of Negura Bunget who didn't have a chance to witness the band live before their split.
"Apart from our album 'Maiestrit,' this is the last release we worked on with the old line-up of Negura Bunget including Sol Faur and Hupogrammos," Negru reflects on the first live document of his group. "And even though we finished working on it only after our separation, everything is informed by the same spirit."

In the spring of 1993, GG Allin was released from prison once again after serving the remaining year of his sentence. He was ready to continue his mission to destroy Rock & Roll and rebuild it in his name. In April, he would once again join forces with The Murder Junkies, who were anxiously waiting to stand beside him in battle. After spending time in a NYC studio recording their final album together, GG was ready to continue his onslaught against society and anyone else who stood in his way. His anger had escalated, and he was spiraling completely out of control.
The tour kicked off in May," says Murder Junkies bassist (and Allin's brother) Merle Allin, "and for a one month period, we tore up the country like no band had ever done before. GG's animalistic behavior and vicious display of rage, chaos and total domination is more evident than ever during these performances. After viewing this DVD, you will understand why 'Terror in America' was the most violent tour in the history of Rock & Roll. I truly believe that the physical abuse that GG's body suffered during this time was a contributing factor in his untimely death.

Official release of two early instrumental demo tracks by the members of Drudkh that formed Old Silver Key. These songs were later re-recorded the same year with vocals by Neige (Alcest) for the debut album Tales of Wandering.

Recorded during rehearsal in Winter 2011, Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Here is the OLD SILVER KEY that opens the door into a world of witches, cunning foxes, talking wolves, where a poor farmer's boy wins the hand of a princess while the prince sulks as a frog. "Tales of Wanderings" take you into the fairy tale world of childhood and logs burning in the fireplace. Yet there is often a twist darker than the stories of the Brothers Grimm to these songs. This comes as no surprise as the mastermind behind the musical tales is Roman Sayenko of DRUDKH. Having explored more progressive ways on their latest output "Handful of Stars" (2010), Roman decided it was time to go even further, but in a new project. In ALCEST singer Neige, the Ukrainian found the perfect collaborator and the OLD SILVER KEY was born. All members of Drudkh gladly joined in the making of "Tales of Wanderings" that only offers a murky glimpse of the Black Metal roots and turns to something warmer and lighter without losing the raw earthen spirit, which the band reluctantly calls Post Rock to give their brainchild a name. Yet OLD SILVER KEY offers something more, which is hard to describe, but takes you on a mental journey full of amazement and wonder. Close your eyes, listen carefully and discover a new side to the Ukrainians!

The Umskiptar album is also a return-to-the-roots album for me, with a strong focus on atmosphere and wholeness rather than anything else. The vocals on this one however are more important than on any other album, with a total of 66 stanzas, some of them even repeated a few times, making up the lyrics of the album. The vocals are very important for the special atmosphere and are more important than on any other Burzum album, and more varied too and as honest as it gets. The concept of the album is Umskiptar (English = Metamorphoses), a deeply rooted European (i.e. Pagan) Stoic concept of changes. This concept was chosen in a world heading for a new Ice Age, and can therefore also be seen as critique of all the popular political movements of our age of lies - VARG VIKERNES

The concept and lyrics on Umskiptar are taken from Voluspa (The Seeress's Prophecy), the first poem of the Poetic Edda - a collection of Norse poetry preserved in the 13th century mediaeval Icelandic manuscript Codex Regius.

Further from its black metal origins than ever before (aside from the neo-classical prison releases), Varg Vikernes has made clear his intention to abandon the purely black metal music with Umskiptar, to create what could be the first Burzum concept album...Umskiptar is a musical poem, brought to life by an ambient black-folk backing track, and those who see Burzum as a continually evolving and changing concept will get the most out of it. A few tracks overstay their welcome, and the tone-deaf vocals do mar the experience somewhat, but the strength of the story and potential for personal interpretation, allows Umskiptar to be the most emotional, complex, and honest Burzum release to date. - Loud Magazine4
