Ever since I was a wee lad, I’ve always enjoyed the breakfast at Micky D’s. Knowing just how bad their food is for you, I was never obsessive with it. It was always a treat to be enjoyed on occaision (which is why, after all these years, I still haven’t tired of it). My order never changes. I don’t dig on swine, so no sausage mc’anything for me, just hotcakes solomente, with two hash bowns and a small coffee!

Now that I’m older, it is still an occaisional treat. But these days, it’s more of a “me time” meal that I eat mostly alone. There is something humbling about sitting by ones self, in a less-than-comfy chair, reading blogs and feeds while stuffing your face with unhealthy food and coffee that tastes like it was made by sewer rats.

Even as I type, a Haul n’ Oats cover of “You’ve lost that loving feeling” plays over the lobby speakers. Later, a group of obviously gay teenagers sings along to Alicia Keys’. I’m going to guess, they may have come from an all-night party. No teenager is up THIS early.

This is my life until the rain passes. I wouldn’t change a thing (except maybe the mouse-droppings in my coffee cup).

Since I was in High School (back in the late 90′s), I’ve had a computer. This was back when computers were much more expensive than they are now, and only privileged people or computer analyst state workers had access to the internet. My Mother was the latter. These were the days of BBS, IRC and eventually AOL 1.5! The internet was sort of new to me at that time. I say “sort of” because I had already experimented with the computers whenever I visited Moms work. Anyhoo, when I would visit BBS’s and various chat rooms and forums, I would always spell “my” and “me” simply with “mi”. Back then, I felt like this set me apart from others on the internet. It wasn’t an original idea at all, but I felt as though it were. People used to notice it whenever I would be typing. It was mi own little signature. Shit, girls dug it!

Flash forward to the present day. I have become somewhat of a snob on these social networking sites. I cant frigging stand when people have constant spelling and grammatical errors. Now, understand; One need not be a perfect speller or have excellent punctuation and grammar. Hell, I often don’t use punctuation at all, and still use (SP?) for words that I can’t spell. However, I think you come across as an idiot if you are always tweeting shit like, “yo dis saterday iz goin down! wii doin werk ova hear!”. Seriously, folks. This is the reason I don’t follow many people back on twitter. I’m too old to try to read that bullshit. Whats worse, some of these violators are older than me! I also see many people using “mi” the same way that I have, up until now. It just isn’t fun to use anymore. In fact, in my little circle of Hip Hop enthusiasts, it is rare to see someone posting anything close to English. So rare, in fact, that posting anything with correct spelling and/or punctuation is almost unheard of (unless people are quoting something that they’ve copied and pasted)!

So, Im going to be “original” and “different” by spelling things the best I can, using spell-check whenever available, and no longer using the trademark that I have held so dear to me for the past 17 years. This will take much practice, as I have been using “mi” when referring to ~~miself~~ in text messages, on forums and across the internet, since I was too young to buy cigarettes and porn! Hopefully, the trend will catch on and people will start spelling like grown-ups.

2 years ago today…wow. How time goes by so quickly. It seems like yesterday Mom and I were just in hot Arizona laying out by the pool. 2 years ago today, God called Mom home.

Mom had a long and happy life up until the problems she encountered with PAD (blood clotting) in both legs. After retiring from working with the State of California for more than 25 years, she moved to Las Vegas. There, she began working as a volunteer for 8 years at the Veterans Hospital. Every year, the VA had special Christmas programs where the employees couldn’t wait to hear Mom sing. And boy could she sing! While at the VA, she earned volunteer of the year award year after year. She made a lasting impression in the lives of many during her time at the VA.

After working with the VA, Mom was hired with the Las Vegas Police Department as a Crossing Guard! You would not want to be speeding in her zone, because she would tell you off with her whistle!!! Her stop sign was bigger than she was…she was only 4′ 11”! Ironically, she patrolled the crosswalk right in front of her house, so I would get some good entertainment every morning and afternoon when I visited her there! All the kids and parents in the neighborhood we like family to her…and she knew every kids’ name!!! Wow!

When Mom began having problems with her legs, I decided to move her to Arizona with me. We had so many wonderful memories, including season ticket holders for the Arizona Cardinals! Everywhere we went, she got special treatment…because she was a special lady.

Today, I celebrate Mom‘s life. I will spend some time at one of her favorite fishing hole’…Miller Park. But I’m sure God has a better fishing hole where she can catch fish all day long.

That feeling that Black Moon’s “Enta Da Stage” gave mi while I was stuffing paint cans into mi Jansport backpack, was simply indescribable. Maybe it was the combination of heavy beats, adrenaline, youth and the faint smell of Krylon. Sneaking out of the front door to put mi name on the city walls of Sacramento, beats blasting ( I’m actually surprised that no one ever snuck up behind to rob or arrest mi). The Black Moon tape was mi soundtrack to bombing the city. Every track influenced a different style in which to write.

Such is the case with Sacramento’s own mic controller, Mahtie Bush‘s latest LP, Backpackramento. This LP delivers what hip hop purists have been thirsting for since the bling era descended upon us, and emcees, take note, THIS is how to deliver a solid album with alienating your core audience! The album boasts a healthy array of production from such as, Chase Moore, Styles 1001, M.I.Geezus, Mic Jordan, DJ Filth and a slew of others – and special guest features….however, not an overdose of features. Rap (particularly west coast) artists are all-too-focused on having features without first establishing themselves as strong soloists! Cameos from Keith Murray (whoa), Chino XL, The Alumni, Wyzdom of Verbal Venom, Flo Montana and Young Cee are very well selected. Every guest spits flawlessly and isn’t overexposed, leaving the artist room to do what he/she does best; entertain us. THAT’S how you do a solo album, fellas!

The track I cant stop knocking is the third, and one of the strongest tracks, “Get Low”. Paying homage to The City of Trees, the break beat smacks the shit out of you and reminds you that Styles 1001 did NOT come to fuck around! I want to see Mahtie perform this song live and watch the crowd brock-out (I will be right there, going dumb)! “I’m from a place that aint safe, Blacks and Ese’s, Russians and Asians will bury you like Dorothea Puente!” How can you go wrong with that? Slapping the face of those who mock the cultural hip hoppers known as ‘backpackers’.

Backpackramento has something for everyone, including concepts (I know what you’re thinking. concepts in music? weird). From the knocker mentioned above, to disturbing drug ballads like “Doing Fine”. Ladies, Mahtie doesn’t forget about you either! The dance-floor heavy “Yes” (featuring Young Cee, Wyzdom, and Keith Murray) will give you that wind in your waist, while “Out of Reach” is that super-ballad. I’m not really a fan of ballads, but they are an essential component in any hip hop album. Maybe something for you female fans to finger-bang yourselves to…? Finally, “Is She Out There?” is the classic, radio-friendly-finger-banger…and by the end of this track, I’m convinced that Mahtie Bush wants a serious relationship with a girl with healthy masturbatory habits! ha!

If you haven’t heard the greatness that is J*Davey, you’re really fucking up. What makes you listen to that horrible shit on the radio, day after pathetic day? I mean, really. How many times can you sit there and listen to Lil’ Wayne and truly believe that you’ve reached the pinnacle of music listening?

I’m going to go on an old man rant here; Whats wrong with you young people in the music business these days? Since when did actually learning an instrument become such a wretched thing? And a lot of you stupid fucks reading this think that you’re too good to open your mind/ears and hear some REAL music. Don’t give mi that look, you ugly fuck! Sit the fuck down and act right before I make you pick a switch off that tree in the back yard.

Whew! Now that that’s out of mi system! Please feel free to download the awesome works of the musical duo “J*Davey”. This past December 25th, they released a 5 track collection for free, on one of mi favorite music websites; bandcamp!

Moving on. The production work of Miss Jack Davey & Brook D’Leau is new and refreshing! They don’t over use the same synths or even user popular sounds that the rest of you fucktard producers use. No sir!

Everything from the melodies, to the time-signatures, to the tempos, are all outside of what most listeners would call “normal”. J*Davey is not afraid to push the envelope. On mi favorite track, “Permission”, Miss Jack reminds mi of a young Starleana Young as she belts out “I dont wanna ask for your permission, baby/maybe you should cut it out”. The production on this song alone is worth the $0.oo price tag (why are you still reading this? its a friggin FREE download). The whole song progresses along with the drum track (something rap producers forgot how to do, but electronic music have understood for ages) which keeps you tapping your funky toes!
