Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter passed on this excellent story to explain why your prospects don’t believe they can start their own part-time network marketing business.

I’m sure you have heard prospects say, “Oh, that will never work.”

Why do your prospects automatically say this when presented with a business opportunity?  Because they have been conditioned by:

• Their parents who told them to get a good job to succeed in life.
• Their school teachers who told them to get good grades so that they can get a worthwhile career job.
• Their friends who told them that they should just fit in with everyone else.
• The newspaper and television reporters who have full-time jobs.

Many subscribers have asked me to print the ‘ape story’ that I use to explain this phenomenon to prospects.  Here it is.

Start with a cage containing five apes.  In the cage, hang a banana on a string and put stairs under it.  Before long, an ape will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana.  As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the apes with cold water.

After a while, another ape makes an attempt with the same result – all the apes are sprayed with cold water.

Turn off the cold water.

Later, if another ape tries to climb the stairs, the other apes will try to prevent it, even though no water sprays them.

Now, remove one ape from the cage and replace it with a new ape.  The new ape sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs.  To his horror, all of the other apes attack him.  After another attempt and attack, the ape knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five apes and replace it with a new ape.  The new ape goes to the stairs and is attacked.  The previous new ape takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm.  Again, replace a third original ape with a new one.  The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well.

Two of the four apes that beat him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are participating in the beating of the newest ape.

After replacing the fourth and fifth original apes, all the original apes that were sprayed with cold water have been replaced.

Nevertheless, no ape ever again approaches the stairs.  Why not?

“Because that’s the way it’s always been around here.”

Here are 10 pictures of bad or unimaginative advertising from the real world …

1.  This is an entrance sign to a park in the Czech Republic.  Do you get a negative first impression?  If we want to affect our prospects positively, let’s start with what we can do, not what we can’t do.

2.  The math wizard that put up this sign probably shouldn’t be managing this convenience store.  We want to make sure our offers are accurate, and our offers should have a compelling benefit to the prospect.

3.  Would you feel secure if this was the level of security at your airport?  Asking gun owners to voluntarily notify airline security is … underwhelming.  I think this could have been worded much better.

4.  While this advertising might be accurate, it certainly does not leave a positive feeling among shoppers.  Sort of puts this shopping experience in a negative light.  Although, I did think it was funny.

5.  While this sign notifies parents of an impending negative experience, it is a lot more positive than the previous sign.  Again, I thought it was funny, but it does make you think that the owners don’t like children.

6.  Feel crap?  This isn’t exactly a message of hope. This sign was on the back of the taxi driver in Scotland. I would have hoped for a more positive or uplifting message for depressed people.

7.  So the owners got together and said, “Let’s think up a name for our store.”  And this is what they came up with? Well, it is descriptive, but so unimaginative. I bet you could come up with a much better name for their marketing.

8.  Pig organ soup may be a local favorite, but this is in a tourist area.  “Gourmet Pork Soup” or any other name might have made it more appealing to American tourists.

9.  Here is another shop from the same tourist area.  “Eat Frog” doesn’t conjure up a gourmet dining experience.  As you notice, there is not a long line at their counter.

10.  This grand opening is incorrectly named “Great Opening,” but that isn’t the problem.  They make it appear to the public that no one has ever bought from them.  We want to use social proof when we can, and give the impression that people love to buy from us, and buy from us often.

Listening to Stephen R. Covey’s “The Eighth Habit” has been a world changer for us.  Here is his opinion of tackling too many things at once:

“Discipline One:  Focus on the wildly important.

There is a key principle that many fail to understand about focusing and organization.  People are naturally wired to focus on only one thing at a time, or at best, very few with excellence.

Suppose you have an 80% chance of achieving any particular goal with excellence.  Add a second goal to that first goal and research shows your chance of achieving both goals drops to 64%.

Keep adding goals and the probability of achieving them plunges steeply.  Juggle five goals at once, for example, and you only have a 33% chance of actually getting excellent results on all of them.

How vital it is, then, to focus diligently and intensely on only a few crucial goals.”

In our article The Dog Who Chases Two Rabbits (Goes Hungry and Looks Silly While Starving), we explain that if you try to build two MLM businesses at the same time, your success rate and credibility are reduced to 50%.

Networkers often justify their many businesses by quoting Robert Kiyosaki‘s endorsement of multiple streams of income.  We do not believe that he ever advised working two similar businesses.  Rather, he advises working a traditional or MLM business and adding another stream later, like real estate, which would not compete with your primary and public first choice.

Would you open a Ford dealership and a GM dealership in the same town?  Not likely.

Another great tip from Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter …

“If prospects don’t have a problem, or don’t want to fix their problem, we don’t have a business.”

For example, do you want to own a restaurant when no one ever gets hungry?  Or how good would your restaurant business be if people didn’t know they were hungry?

Your network marketing business is easy when you have lots of hungry prospects who want to fix their problems.

So how do you find these hungry prospects?

You create them.

You don’t create hungry prospects by talking at them.  You create hungry prospects by listening to them.

Of course we don’t want to listen to hours of their personal drama, so we can guide the conversation by asking them a special question.

Here’s a list of starter questions that can turn ordinary people into hungry prospects – some cool ‘negative’ things you can say to prospects to help them take action.  Prospects will commit to action more easily if they are avoiding something negative.

1. Are you okay with never taking a long holiday until you are 65 years old and too old to enjoy it?
2. How does it feel on Sunday night knowing that we have five days ahead of waking up early and commuting?
3. Imagine what it would be like to keep working five and six days a week for the rest of our lives.
4. Every day don’t you feel like taking a nap at 2 PM because we end up doing the same boring stuff day after day after day?
5. Every time that alarm clock goes off, I say to myself: “I hate my job.”
6. We didn’t go to school to become professional commuters wasting hours every day fighting traffic.
7. Groveling and begging for a pay raise is demeaning.
8. You know we are going to die as a worker bee unless we do something about it.
9. At least rats get cheese at the end of the maze.
10. Prison cells are bigger than the cubicles we get at work.
11. This is a stupid 50/50 plan. Fifty weeks for them, two weeks for us.
12. Unless there is reincarnation, we are doomed unless we do something different now.
13. Don’t you also get stressed to see our lives slowly slip away while we work for someone else?
14. You know, if we work really hard, then our boss will have a big house for his retirement.
15. How many more days of our remaining lives do we want to work on a job that we have no passion for?
16. We know how our current profession will leave us: old and broke.
17. What do you think will happen next year if you decide not to make any changes this year?
