Tomas defeats JM Del Potro 6/1 6/4 !!! . CONGRATS Tomas !!!

NINTH seed Tomas Berdych has powered past Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets to win the Japan Open, his first ATP title of the season.
The 23-year-old Czech, who shocked American second seed Andy Roddick and third seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile on his way to the final, coasted to a surprisingly one-sided 6-1, 6-4 victory over the fifth seed.
“In this condition and at this level of tennis, I think the most important thing is to... just be 100 per cent on the court - then the results can come,” said Berdych. “I think it happened to me this week and I'm very happy for that. I'm really happy to win here, especially here in Tokyo, I hope I will be here next year.”

Berdych, currently ranked 27th in the world, said his goal was to finish 2008 in or near the top 10. “Since summer, I lost a lot of points and dropped in the rankings, so I'm now trying to get back. I have three more tournaments, three really big tournaments in Europe,” Berdych said. “So I'm looking forward to going out there. My goal is to get back to as close as possible to the top 10, and next year I have a lot of chances to bring my ranking up,” he added.

It was Berdych's first title since winning at Halle in June last year, and his fourth overall, after victories at Palermo in 2004 and Paris in 2005. Berdych had beaten Del Potro in a Challenger event in 2006, but had never played him at a full-fledged ATP Tour event.
Del Potro, who eliminated defending champion David Ferrer of Spain and last year's other finalist Richard Gasquet of France to make it to Sunday's match, had to be satisfied with being the runner-up. (foxsport)

Tomas reached his 2nd Final of the 2008 season, after Bastad. He beat Andy Roddick in the semifinal 6:7(3) 7:5 7:6(3).

Tomorrow he will face Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) in the final. Del Potro beat Richard Gasquet (FRA) in the semis.

Tomas and Juan Martin played never before on the ATP Tour.

The final will be played sunday on Center Court, 2nd after 12 noon.

"I was 5-2 down in the final set but it was only a break and since I broke him twice in the second set I knew I could do it again," assessed Berdych.

Looking ahead to the final, he added: "He (JM Del Potro) has had a great season so far but we have both won four matches to get to the final this week so I think it will be a close match. I look forward to playing him."

Tomas beat Fernando Gonzalez in the quarterfinal of the AIG Japan Championships in Tokyo 6/0 6/4.

He will face Andy Roddick in the semifinal. This match is scheduled for Saturday 4th October 2008, the 4th match after 10 a.m. on center court.

Andy and Tomas played three times against each other. Andy leads 2:1.

He bet number 6 seed Tommy Robredo (ESP)7:6(6) 6:2 in the 3rd Round.

In the Quarterfinal he will face the winner between Amer Delic (USA) and Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)

Tomas bet Roko Karanusic 6:3 6:4 in the 2nd Round of the AIG Japan Tennis Championships in Tokyo.

His next opponent will be Tommy Robredo (ESP). Tommy bet Josef Sirianni 6:2 6:2 in the 2nd Round.

Tomas and Tommy played four times against each other. It´s equal, both won two matches.

Tomas lost the semifinal to Novak Djokovic 5:7 1:6. Djokovic will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Bangkok Open.

Tomas next Tournament is Tokyo next week.

In the semifinal Tomas will face Serbian Novak Djokovic. They played never against each other.
