Wow, good to hear from you and thanks for commenting! You made some good points there. I wrote this post kind of as a response to some messy/inconsistent official releases I'd seen going about. It's really cool to see artists releasing their own stuff on the web but I find it disheartening to see it done badly. Also I read some horror stories about people making Audio-CDs from MP3s, and sometimes re-encoding afterwards :( But yeh, maybe I didn't consider storage space as much as I could have.

Thanks for stopping by! What are you up to these days? Don't be a stranger (add me on Twitter/Facebook/Google+).

Hi Tom, I both disagree and agree about point 1. On portable devices, size is still a consideration. I don't want 320kbps on mymobile memory card if I've only got 8 or 16 gig to play around with. Thankfully, most devices are ok with Variable Bitrate MP3s, and this is definitely the way to go. You're right in saying that quality is a consideration though. Anyone concerned with MP3 quality should be using the LAME mp3 encoding methods - these are specially tuned for the best quality output; in fact at 220-250kbps, blind tests show significant difficulty in telling them apart from the originals.
The hydrogenaudio wiki explains it better than I can: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME

p.s. Nice to have stumbled across you again, last time I saw you was around 2007 in a pub in Leeds :)

Nice post, Tom! Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could get all the convenience without any of the sacrifices? :-)

Thanks for the warning Tim, I haven't updated yet. That's a pretty major functionality change so can't believe they've made that decision without the ability to change it in settings!

Although it wasn't automatic, the recent iOS update for iPad changed the screen lock switch to a mute switch without giving the option to change it back. Incredibly frustrating.

Thanks Patrick, that's true. I think like most people, I had not weighed up the possible negative side of invisible updating because I was too starry-eyed at what a great browser Chrome is. It's this type of thing that ultimately leads to fanatical fanboyism, when someone subconsciously realises that they are too invested in something to get out if they needed to.

Thanks Mr. Riley, for listening to the podcast and for writing this post. I think you make a good point.

A point I made while we were discussing this was basically that... people like something until they don't and that you should try to see the general application of things, versus just saying "oh, this is great while Google agrees with me." That's not fair to Google, honestly. If you liked the idea of automatic updates, you also have to be willing to take the consequences of that, as well.

Thanks again,
