<p>There is a wonderful environmental message behind <strong>The Lorax</strong>, so I wanted to incorporate some tips for greening up your Dr. Seuss party plans.</p>

<p> </p>
<p>Even when it comes to baking delicious cupcakes, you can be kinder to the environment by using  cupcake liners that are biodegradable.   I just love my silicone baking cups too, they are easy to clean, and can be re-used over and over again.</p>
<p><strong>Note:</strong> The cupcake toppers were made by printing <a href="http://www.theloraxmovie.com/index.php?__source=ggl|the+lorax|Brand|G_TheLorax&amp;sky=ggl|the+lorax|Brand|G_TheLorax#/splash" target="_blank">The Lorax Reflection Activity Sheet</a>, cutting out the discs and attaching them to toothpicks.</p>
<div class="photo-wrap photo-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c016301574a98970d" style="display: inline-block; width: 550px;">
<div class="photo-wrap photo-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74e884c970c" id="photo-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74e884c970c" style="display: inline-block; width: 550px;"><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74e884c970c-pi"><img alt="Environmentally friendly dr seuss party" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74e884c970c" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74e884c970c-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Environmentally friendly dr seuss party" /></a></div>
<br /><br /></div>
<div>When celebrating with children, it is not always possible to use plates that won't break, but that doesn't mean you can't use more eco-friendly products such as bamboo, or the ones that I have used for this party which are compostable and made from wheat stalks.   The cutlery is compostable plastic made from plant materials.  And of course if you do use straws, I prefer paper ones as they can be recycled. </div>
<p> </p>
<p>Instead of serving juice boxes (with plastic straws), or soda to the kids, fill a beverage dispenser and leave out glass bottles of water.   Serve beverages in re-useable glass bottles or jars.</p>
<p><strong>My party tip: </strong> If you are using jars instead of bottles to serve beverages, turn your straws into truffula trees that tickle your nose when you are drinking.   Kids will love it. </p>
<p><strong>Note:</strong> The Lorax face on the beverage dispenser was made by printing the <a href="http://www.theloraxmovie.com/index.php?__source=ggl|the+lorax|Brand|G_TheLorax&amp;sky=ggl|the+lorax|Brand|G_TheLorax#/splash" target="_blank">pumpkin carving template</a> available on The Lorax Movie site, under downloads.</p>

<div style="display: inline-block; width: 550px;">
<div class="photo-wrap photo-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c016301580952970d" id="photo-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c016301580952970d" style="display: inline-block; width: 550px;"><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c016301580952970d-pi"><img alt="Dr seuss party food" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c016301580952970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c016301580952970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Dr seuss party food" /></a> </div>
<div>I thought the chocolate 'seeds' were a nice touch for the party treats.</div>
<div>   </div>
</div>
<p>Glass vases, hurricane candle holders, bowls, and canning jars are another great way to present your party treats.  Finn and Gil's jelly pond treats were made by pouring the jelly into canning jars and refrigerating until set.  The lids help protect your treats from bugs, and little fingers, plus you can pop these jars into a shallow ice bucket to keep the jelly cold.</p>
<p>Another thing I love to use for parties is fabric, bed sheets, or tablecloths for both back drops, and to cover tables rather than plastic table covers.</p>
<p>When planning your party food, get to know what your characters like. <strong> Do you know what the characters of The Lorax love to eat?</strong></p>
<div class="photo-wrap photo-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74f20d8970c" id="photo-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74f20d8970c" style="display: inline-block; width: 550px;"><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74f20d8970c-pi"><img alt="TheLorax_Still7" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74f20d8970c" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e74f20d8970c-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="TheLorax_Still7" /></a></div>
<blockquote>
<p><strong>Finn and Gil</strong>: Marshmallows</p>
<p><strong>Bill</strong>: Truffula Fruit</p>
<p><strong>The Lorax</strong>: Truffula Berry Pancakes</p>
<p><strong>Pip</strong>: Mini Marshmallows</p>
</blockquote>
<p>These should give you some great ideas for your <strong>Dr. Seuss' The Lorax</strong> party. </p>
<p>I made some delicious blueberry pancakes for our party table.  I used my standard pancake recipe, then added in about 1/3 of a tub of fresh chopped blueberries.  Then I used circular metal rings in the pan to make the perfect little round pancakes pictured.  <strong>Note:</strong> Make sure to spray the rings before using so the pancakes don't stick to them.  Once you flip the pancakes, carefully remove the metal rings (not with your fingers silly), and set them aside to cool for a few moments before making your next batch.</p>
<p>Now a party doesn't just begin or end with food.  The other ladies on <a href="http://loraxtoolkit.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">The Lorax Blog Tour</a> have lined up some fabulous things to do that would be a great addition to your <strong>Dr. Seuss' The Lorax</strong> party.</p>

<p>My dear friends Dawn and Elizabeth of <strong>Party BluPrints</strong> have teamed up with <a href="http://www.letsmakeknorr.com/Products/Homestyle-Stock.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Knorr® Homestyle Stock</a> and put together a fabulous <a href="http://www.partybluprintsblog.com/party-themes/homegating-score-big-with-party-tips-and-recipes" target="_blank">Game Day Plan</a> for you.</p>
<p>Based off their bluprint, I've thrown together a few ideas too. <a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e543b300970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Homegating Party Tips and Recipes" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e543b300970c" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c0168e543b300970c-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Homegating Party Tips and Recipes" /></a><br /><br /></p>
<p><strong>1. Slow Cooker Pulled Pork </strong></p>
<p>The Slow Cooker Pulled Pork recipe is available on <a href="http://knorr.com/Recipes/12142/1/Slow-Cooker-Pulled-Pork.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Knorr.com</a>.  Serve with homemade coleslaw.</p>
<p><strong>2. Sauza-rita</strong></p>
<p>This is no ordinary margarita.  Beer is a staple for homegating parties for the men in our house, but let's make it a little more fun.  I've previously made this <a href="http://www.tonyastaab.com/2010/09/happy-hour-with-sauza.html" target="_blank">Sauza-rita</a> during a Tequila party and it was a big hit.  And the best part, beer is one of the ingredients.</p>
<p><strong>3. Football Juice Boxes</strong></p>
<p>Make juice boxes for the kids more fun.  Take some brown paper and wrap it around the juice box, sealing it with some glue, then add some 'football' details using white paint and a brush.</p>
<p><strong>4. French Dip Burgers</strong></p>
<p>You will find the recipe for these burgers on <a href="http://knorr.com/Recipes/12135/1/French-Dip-Burgers.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Knorr.com</a>.   These make a great alternative to the <strong>Slow Cooker Pulled Pork</strong>.  Serve with individual tubs of french fries.  I found some fabulous greaseproof and non-toxic newspaper liners at World Market that fold into a cone shape and can be placed inside individual cups, making it easy for guests to top with their favorite condiments such as ketchup, salt, or malt vinegar.</p>
<p><strong>5.  Broccoli and Cheese Puff Pastry Appetizers</strong></p>
<p>Dawn and Elizabeth put together a fabulous <a href="http://www.partybluprintsblog.com/party-themes/homegating-score-big-with-party-tips-and-recipes" target="_blank">Broccoli and Cheese SuperBowl</a> on their game day plan.  I followed their recipe for the filling, but I felt I had enough 'bread' dishes already with two burgers being offered for the main, so instead of using a bread bowl for this dip, I baked Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry shells according to the instructions on the packet, then filled with the broccoli and cheese filling.  I topped each with chives to turn them into a fun 'football' themed treat.</p>
<p><strong>6.  Football Cake Pops.</strong></p>
<p>I've become quite addicted to making cake pops.  Here are the basics for making cake pops: begin by baking a chocolate cake, then once cooled, cut off the crispy exterior and crumble the cake into fine crumbs.  Mix with chocolate frosting until it becomes easy to mold.  Chill for a while in the refrigerator, then shape.  Melt chocolate candies (the kind you buy at craft stores).  Put a little on a lollipop stick and insert into the cake ball, put aside until it is set.  Once set dip the entire cake ball into the melted chocolate candy and set aside until it is dry.  Once firm, decorate using an icing writer, sparkle gel, or ready to use icing tubes.</p>

<p>The kids have been learning about the Pilgrims at school.  Last year I made <a href="http://www.tonyastaab.com/2010/10/autumn-cupcakes.html" target="_blank">Fall cupcakes</a> and <a href="http://www.tonyastaab.com/2010/11/turkey-cupcakes.html" target="_blank">turkey cupcakes</a>, so I thought I'd make something a little different this year and surprised them after school with little Pilgrim cupcakes.</p>
<p>What you need to make these:</p>
<ul>
<li>Plain vanilla cupcakes in brown cupcake liners</li>
<li>White icing</li>
<li>Cocoa powder</li>
<li>Chocolate for melting (perfect excuse to use up some of that Halloween candy)</li>
<li>Large Marshmallows</li>
<li>Chocolate coated cookies</li>
<li><a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=pg_sparklegel" target="_blank">Wilton Sparkle Gel</a> - white, yellow, and black</li>
<li>Large round Wilton tip with a piping bag and tape.</li>
<li>Toothpicks (or any other kind of pick or narrow skewer)</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015392ece842970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="How to make pilgrim cupcakes" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015392ece842970b" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015392ece842970b-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="How to make pilgrim cupcakes" /></a></p>
<p>Begin by making the Pilgrim hat.  Melt the chocolate in the microwave and using a pick coat each marshmallow in melted chocolate.  Place it carefully on top of the cookie and pop it in the refrigerator until set.  Once set gently remove the pick. Using the sparkle gel add on a white band and yellow buckle, then set aside.</p>
<p>Mix a small amount of cocoa at a time with plain white icing until you get a color you are happy with.   Place the tip inside the bag (cut off the end of the bag) and tape the bag onto the tip.  Fill the bag with icing and holding your hand very steady and keeping the tip just above the top of the cupcake pipe a face onto each cupcake.  If you push down just a little while piping you will see that the icing fills out so it covers more of the top of the cupcake.</p>
<p>Place the hat on top of the icing and using the black sparkle gel add facial features.</p>

It's such a fantastic spot for a party, I highly recommend it, and all of the kids had a wonderful time. One moment that touched me, was each of the birthday guests were asked to choose 2 hearts for a bear. The first one they placed into their own bear. <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p><strong>UPDATE:</strong>  This giveaway has ended.  The winner of the $300 gift card is Kathy Murphy.  Congratulations!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>************************</strong></p>
<p>I am always looking for new ways to feed guests who come over, and more importantly feed both adults and children without making a lot of different dishes.  I don't want to spend the entire time in the kitchen.  Quite often my husband will grill and I will whip up a few sides, but I like to mix it up, especially when the same group of friends come over regularly, I don't want to be seen as too predictible with what they will be fed.  So recently we put together a <strong>Sub Lunch Bar</strong>.</p>
<p>We went with 4 different types of subs: <strong>Pizza</strong>, <strong>Chicken Alfredo</strong>, <strong>Meatballs</strong>, and <strong>Vegetarian</strong>.</p>
<p>This is what we put out:</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391f5aaee970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Homemade sub toppings" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015391f5aaee970b" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391f5aaee970b-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Homemade sub toppings" /></a> </p>
<ul>
<li>Assorted sub rolls</li>
<li>Cheese: Swiss, American, Cheddar, Provolone</li>
<li>Green and red bell pepper</li>
<li>Olives</li>
<li>Banana Peppers</li>
<li>Spinach</li>
<li>Tomato</li>
<li>Mushrooms</li>
<li>Pepperoni</li>
<li>Pizza sauce</li>
<li>Chicken alfredo (recipe below)</li>
<li>Turkey meatballs with pasta sauce (recipe below)</li>
</ul>
<p>Turn the oven on before serving lunch so that it is heated before guests begin to load up their subs.  Those guests who want to have their subs toasted can put their sub onto a cookie tray and pop it in the oven for a few minutes until the bread is toasted and the cheese melted.  Everyone ended up having toasted subs, it was a big hit.  The pizza subs were a favorite of the kids, they loved theirs toasted with cheese, Ragu pizza sauce and pepperoni.  Adults and bigger kids though seemed to go for the meatball and chicken alfredo.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 13pt;"><strong>Meatball Subs</strong></span></p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8be964e0970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Meatball sub" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8be964e0970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8be964e0970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Meatball sub" /></a></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Turkey meatball ingredients:</span></p>
<ul>
<li>Ground turkey</li>
<li>1 1/2 cups bread crumbs</li>
<li>1 onion <em>(finely chopped)</em></li>
<li>2 eggs <em>(lightly beaten)</em></li>
<li>thyme <em>(approx 1 tbs)</em></li>
<li>Everyday seasoning <em>(Trader Joe's have a great one that comes in a grinder)</em></li>
<li>salt &amp; pepper to taste</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ragu.com/index.php/traditional" target="_blank">Ragu® Old World Style® Traditional Pasta Sauce</a> <em>(with 2 servings of veggies)</em></li>
</ul>
<p>Combine ingredients in a bowl and then roll into meatballs.  Heat oil in a pan and cook the meatballs, turning until browned on all sides.  Once cooked through poor the Ragu sauce over the top and simmer until ready to serve.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 13pt;"><strong>Chicken Alfredo Subs</strong></span></p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Chicken Alfredo Ingredients:</span></p>
<ul>
<li>Chicken breasts</li>
<li>2 tbs butter (melted)</li>
<li>2 tsp Everyday seasoning <em>(Trader Joe's have a great one that comes in a grinder)</em></li>
<li>Fresh basil<em><br /></em></li>
<li><a href="http://www.ragu.com/index.php/alfredo" target="_blank">Ragu ® Cheesy! Classic Alfredo Sauce</a></li>
</ul>
<p>Combine the butter and seasoning in a bowl, brush over the chicken breasts.  Grill until cooked through (I cooked ours on the George Foreman Grill).</p>
<p>Once cooled a little cut into slices and transfer to a pan that has been sprayed with a little cooking spray.  Pour the alfredo sauce over the top and heat, mixing every now and then.  Add in the fresh basil and turn the heat down to low and simmer until ready to serve.</p>
<p><em><strong>Note:</strong> I made both the meatballs and chicken alfredo at the same time, then had the pizza sauce heating on a 3rd burner on the stove.</em></p>

<p>Aside from the toppings that were already out on the bar, I heated up a jar of <a href="http://www.ragu.com/index.php/homemadepizza" target="_blank">Ragu® Pizza Sauce</a> in my lovely new red Le Creuset Saucepan (thanks to Ragu) and then transfered it to a dish with a spoon.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8be9a785970d-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="041" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8be9a785970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8be9a785970d-120wi" style="width: 120px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="041" /></a> Here's a fun tip for you.  I used the jars from the Ragu® sauce to make lovely vases for our table.  Wash them out, take off the labels, fill with pretty flowers and then tie a ribbon or piece of raffia around it.</p>
<p>It's football season and a sub bar would be a great way to celebrate with friends and family if you love homegating parties.</p>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The twins turned 5 on Sunday. <span style="font-size: 13pt;"><strong>5!</strong></span> I can hardly believe it.  Marisol wanted to ride a horse for her birthday (as she does most days).  So we decided to have a <strong>Cowboy and Cowgirl</strong> themed party.  Flynn tends to just go with the flow, he generally thinks everything is a great idea ... unless I'm taking him shopping of course, he tends to voice his opinion on that subject.</p>
<p>It didn't take me long to find a location for the party.  A quick google search of horse riding in San Diego took me to the <a href="http://www.ridingacademy.biz/index.html" target="_blank">Mega Arte Riding Academy</a>.  By chance this wonderful place also hosts parties.  The party was split into three parts - horse riding, feeding the animals, and then party time.  Each portion lasted about an hour.</p>
<p>Before I share a ton of photographs though, here are the precious birthday kids.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e539df970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Cowgirl and cowboy" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e539df970b" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e539df970b-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Cowgirl and cowboy" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 13pt;"><strong>Horse Riding</strong></span></p>
<p>There were three instructors to look after the kids.  They took them around the ring, through cones, over small jumps, and some kids even trotted.  Flynn thought trotting was hysterical, he couldn't stop laughing as he bounced up and down around the ring.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3b28a970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Horse riding Mega Arte Riding Academy" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3b28a970b" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3b28a970b-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Horse riding Mega Arte Riding Academy" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 13pt;"><strong>Animal Feeding</strong></span></p>
<p>The kids were each given a bucket of food for the animals (which needed to be topped up numerous times throughout our tour - the animals were very well fed).  There were pigs, roosters, horses, llama, peacocks, bunnies and goats to feed.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b72213970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Animal food" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b72213970c" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b72213970c-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Animal food" /></a></p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 12pt;">Activities</span></p>
<p>I had set up number of activities for the kids. </p>
<p>There were wooden horses to throw hoops over, horseshoe toss, tin cans to knock down, and a playground with swings, a slide and toys to play on.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b726c8970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Cowboy and cowgirl party activities" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b726c8970c" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b726c8970c-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Cowboy and cowgirl party activities" /></a> <br />The wooden horse idea came from <a href="http://www.mygrowinghome.com/2011/04/buckaroo-birthday-party.html" target="_blank">Growing Home</a> (which I found via <a href="http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/my-party/my-party-big-brother-atlanta-ga-143659" target="_blank">Ohdeedoh</a>).  I contacted a friend (who was also a party guest) who's dad loves making things with wood and had him make a couple for me - you can contact them at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nanas-Tutu-Trunk/132634640118044" target="_blank">Nana's Tutu Trunk</a>.</p>
<p>We had the token mustache photo station which is popular at the moment.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3d207970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Mustache photo station" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3d207970b" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3d207970b-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Mustache photo station" /></a></p>
<p>I purchased the mustaches from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/PiccadillyPartyCo?ref=pr_shop_more" target="_blank">Piccadilly Party Co</a> on Etsy.  The frame I found at a thrift shop for $1.99 and I had my husband hang some rope from it.  I put the collection of mustaches in a silver bucket along with a bandanna for those wanting to use that in photographs too.</p>
<p>I lined all of the tables with brown paper and set out buckets of crayons for the kids to draw.  There was also a bucket of western themed coloring book and crayon packs (that the kids could also take home with him), and we had cookie decorating.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd79595970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Cowboy cookie decorating" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd79595970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd79595970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Cowboy cookie decorating" /></a> <br />For the cookie decorating I had the <a href="http://www.edelweissbakerysandiego.com/" target="_blank">Edelweiss Bakery</a> I have been using for years make cowboy cookies for me with plain white icing.  I set out an assortment of Wilton <a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=2A75C1FB-423B-522D-FAD4870D1F834828&amp;fid=9BD3D7CC-1E0B-C910-EA511D8223E5DE39" target="_blank">Sparkle Gel</a> and <a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=5299E0BC-802D-F658-06A6ACAE4BD644D5&amp;fid=9BD3D720-1E0B-C910-EA25967D237753C9" target="_blank">Edible Color markers </a>in buckets for the kids to decorate their cowboys.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.orientaltrading.com/mini-western-activity-sets-a2-12_3261.fltr?prodCatId=90000&amp;categoryFromSearch=true&amp;tabId=1&amp;rd=western" target="_blank">Mini Western Activity Kits</a> were purchased from Oriental Trading.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 12pt;">The Food and Drink</span></p>
<p>The twins are not allowed to have soda, so we decided to go with milk and water for the party.  For those who didn't want plain milk or water though I set out containers containing chocolate powder and crystal light to fancy their drinks up a bit.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7a75e970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Cowboy and cowgirl party drinks" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7a75e970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7a75e970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Cowboy and cowgirl party drinks" /></a></p>
<p>I found the great idea for the personalized party straws on <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/106476839/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, they were made by <a href="http://www.ontobaby.com/2011/02/blue-green-mini-cooper-baby-shower/" target="_blank">On To Baby</a>.  I simply took large address labels, folded them (before peeling off the backing), used some mini western themed letters and stamped the names on, then cut a small triangle in the side of each, peeled the backing off and attached them to the straws. </p>
<p>The milk bottles are actually wine carafs I purchased at <a href="http://www.worldmarket.com/home/index.jsp" target="_blank">World Market</a>.  I was worried about bugs getting into the milk though so I made little covers for them.  I simply cut out a circle of oil cloth, turned it upside down and placed it over the top of the bottle.  Then I stitched a thin piece of elastic together to make a circle and slipped it over the top of the oil cloth and bottle.  While it was on the bottle I hand-stitched the elastic onto the oil cloth every centimeter or so.  Once stitched together I flipped it inside out and put it over the top of the bottle as a lid.<br /><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3ebba970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Personalized party straws" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3ebba970b" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015391e3ebba970b-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Personalized party straws" /></a><br />The biodegradable gray and white paper straws were purchased from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Kikkerland-Biodegradable-Paper-Straws-Striped/dp/B004K8N18Q" target="_blank">Amazon</a>.</p>
<p>The drink cups and lids, as well as the containers for the drink mixes were purchased from <a href="http://www.smartandfinal.com/Homepage.aspx" target="_blank">Smart &amp; Final</a>.</p>
<p>We order Subway for our guests for lunch.  Along with that there was plenty of candy, horseshoe shaped cookies, grapes, meringues, cupcakes, popcorn, pretzels, cowboy cookies, and dip with veggies.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7b446970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Green and white party treats" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7b446970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7b446970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Green and white party treats" /></a></p>
<p>The lollipops were purchased from <a href="http://www.partycity.com/product/chocolate+brown+lollipop+kit.do?sortby=ourPicks&amp;size=all&amp;from=Search&amp;navSet=lollipop" target="_blank">Party City</a>, you can customize your own labels for them.</p>
<p>The adorable farm house candy holders with little silver scoops were purchased from <a href="http://www.worldmarket.com/home/index.jsp" target="_blank">World Market</a>.  They were filled with jelly lollies, jelly beans, M&amp;M's and yogurt covered raisins.</p>
<p>The dip and veggie cups were very easy to make.  I put a spoonful of hummus, yogurt dip, or tzatziki dip in alternate souffle cups then popped a few green beans, celery sticks and cucumber sticks in each.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 12pt;">The Cupcakes</span></p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7ba3e970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Cowboy and cowgirl cupcakes" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7ba3e970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7ba3e970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Cowboy and cowgirl cupcakes" /></a> <br />I made yummy chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing and dunked each into a bowl of chocolate sprinkles.  Each cupcake was topped with a horse.  I found tubes of horses at <a href="http://www.joann.com/joann/home/home.jsp" target="_blank">Joann's</a>.  Most places carried tubes of assorted farm animals so I was ecstatic when I found ones with just horses in them.</p>
<p>There was a very cheeky girl who somehow managed to sneak a second cupcake.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b764a4970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="A cowgirl cupcake" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b764a4970c" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b764a4970c-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="A cowgirl cupcake" /></a></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 12pt;">Party Favors</span></p>
<p>Each guest went home with a handmade hobby horse, cowboy hat and a bandanna on a stick to fill with decorated cookies, a horse from their cupcake, gifts from the 'pass the parcel' game, lollipops, and Mini Western Activity Kits.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7cad7970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Handmade hobby horses" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7cad7970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7cad7970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Handmade hobby horses" /></a></p>
<p>The hobby horses ended up being a lot of fun for the kids to play with during the party too.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b77203970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Cowboy and cowgirl party favors" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b77203970c" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c015435b77203970c-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Cowboy and cowgirl party favors" /></a></p>
<p><strong>The Hobby Horses</strong> - my husband purchased the pre-cut sticks at Home Depot.  The horse heads were made out of socks.  I found the idea on <a href="http://www.dandee-designs.com/2010/10/hobby-horse-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Dandee</a> however made a few changes.  I used regular buttons for eyes.  I used a combination of rope, grommets (found at <a href="http://www.beverlys.com/" target="_blank">Beverlys</a>), and canvas straps (similar to what you would use for a bag handle).   The mane was made out of <a href="http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/woolease.htm" target="_blank">Lion Brand Wool-Ease</a> in wheat.  I used leftover rope from the hula-hoops to wrap tightly attach the sock onto the stick (along with gorilla glue).</p>
<p><strong>The bandannas on sticks</strong> - The sticks were the exact same ones we used for the hobby horses.  The bandannas were purchased from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005149R5Y" target="_blank">Amazon</a>.</p>
<p><strong>The cowboy hats</strong> were purchased from <a href="http://www.orientaltrading.com/childs-western-hats-a2-15_820.fltr?prodCatId=388699&amp;tabId=1" target="_blank">Oriental Trading</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7f402970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Mega Arte Riding Academy" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7f402970d" src="http://tonyastaab.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a61aa83a970c014e8bd7f402970d-550wi" style="width: 550px;" title="Mega Arte Riding Academy" /></a></p>
<p>Invitations were sent using <a href="http://www.punchbowl.com/" target="_blank">Punchbowl</a>.  They have a lovely horse invitation that has twin horses on it.</p>

<p>In honor of <a href="http://www.smartandfinal.com/" target="_blank">Smart &amp; Final's 140th Birthday</a> I threw together a little celebration.  I'm honored to be one of the <strong>#sfsmarties</strong> and love <strong>Smart &amp; Final</strong>, particularly for when I'm hosting parties.  You can view some of the items we purchased for this party table on <a href="http://my.thismoment.com/moment/view/75192/smart-final-140th-birthday-celebration" target="_blank">ThisMoment</a>.</p>

<blockquote>
<p><strong>Red Velvet Cake </strong>- filled with freshly whipped cream and topped with sifted powdered sugar</p>
<p><strong>Twizzlers</strong></p>
<p><strong>Milk</strong> (First Street) - Red Straws (First Street) and Party Cups</p>
<p><strong>Yogurt covered raisins</strong></p>
<p><strong>Starlight Peppermints</strong> (First Street)</p>
<p><strong>Red Velvet Cookies</strong></p>
<p><strong>Apple and Cheese Danish Bites</strong></p>
<p><strong>Strawberries</strong></p>
<p><strong>Kettle Corn</strong></p>
</blockquote>
<p><strong>TIPS:</strong></p>
<p>To decorate I hung a rope above the table and lay folded napkins over the top to form a banner and placed a matching table cloth on the table.  These were from the <a href="http://www.tonyastaab.com/2010/09/a-bears-and-bees-birthday-party.html" target="_blank">twins 3rd birthday party</a>.</p>
<p>Glass hurricane candle holders are fabulous for holding party snacks such as fruit and kettle corn.</p>
<p>Small trays can be turned into an instant cake stand by placing it on top of a candlestick holder.</p>
<p>Silicone baking cups are perfect for holding small snacks such as yogurt covered raisins.</p>
<p>When using a boxed cake mix, use apple sauce in place of oil - This tip is from Martha Stewart.</p>

<p>We held a <strong>Barbie Princess Charm School Tea Party</strong> recently with some little friends to celebrate the new <a href="http://www.barbie.com/princess-charm-school/#/home" target="_blank"><strong>Barbie Princess Charm School DVD</strong></a> coming out in the Fall.  I love high tea, so wanted to set up something similar, but more child friendly.</p>
<p>We took inspiration from the three dolls that were sent to us: Blair, Hadley and Delancey to create the color scheme for the tea party.</p>

<p>As you can see lots of pink, blue and purple were included. </p>

<li>Mozzarella Cheese Sticks</li>
<li>Beverage: Blue Gatorade</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Table Settings</span></p>
<p>Each guest had their own place set at the table complete with a princess hat to wear and a special placemat showing them where forks, spoons, knives, glasses and napkins should be placed.</p>

<p>Each guest was also given a manners checklist (to teach them about proper etiquette), thank you cards, a certificate of completion of Barbie Princess Charm School, along with a goody bag of fun things including stickers to take home.</p>
