“Interface design is when one is designing something that will be used by humans. The understanding of how a user thinks, learns and adapts is important knowledge.”

This is what web and user interface designers have to get across to people that are not in the business but want our services.

Why I chose Tumblr over Wordpress

My blog platform of choice has always been Wordpress. It’s free, simple, and reliable. I’ve had several small blogs hosted on Wordpress for different projects and my personal site for over 6 years with no real issues. The only problem is that I rarely update them - especially my personal site. I’ve flirted with the idea of using a different blogging platform, such as ExpressionEngine, MovableType, and TextPattern, but for one reason or another I’ve always decided to go the route of Wordpress.

Earlier this year when I decided to redesign my personal site I found myself considering the same blogging platform decision again. Then I realized that the solution to my lack of blogging doesn’t involve which platform I use - it’s which platform makes it easiest and least time consuming for me to post. Enter Tumblr.

Tumblr has great built-in posting options including text, links, quotes, audio, photos, videos, etc. This is ideal for me because I don’t always want write a blog post, I just want to post a quick tidbit of info and move on. It also updates my twitter feed as soon as I post something which in turn updates my facebook account. Add to that the great iphone Tumblr app and I believe a winner is obvious for my needs.

The static pages, like the home and about pages, can be easily edited via my web editor (Textmate/Coda) which won’t change very often anyway. The Tumblr blog will reside in the blog subdomain (blog.tonycarrera.net). Another nice thing about this is the lack of maintenance - no more upgrading, maintaining, or hosting a blog.

Tumblr won’t be my default choice for other sites, especially commercial sites, but for low maintenance and hassle-free blogging, Tumblr will be on the top of my list.
