I really don't mean to be the only dissenting voice here, but I wonder if we are missing the crux of the questions being asked. It seems to be: Are most attractional churches actually missional?

It's not "either/or" or rather "and" it's, "What's the point of being attractional if you aren't missional?"

When you see the statistic that 96% of attractional church growth is people transferring from one church to another...you really have to ask if we are missing the point. We can probably all agree that this isn't what Jesus was going after.

Are there attractional churches that are missional? DEFINITELY. But if we're honest...I mean REALLY honest, we'd have to say that by-in-large, that isn't the case.

Unfortunately, I don't think there are many "missional" churches that are successfully missional in the way Jesus would label it either! Ed Stetzer did a great blog post on this.

At least from where I sit, it doesn't seem as if either the "inherited/attractional" model or the "missional" model are doing too terribly well in how Jesus would define mission.

Just a thought.

I agree with you Tony on the "and". I used to thnk we had to be one or th other, but recently, it seems like God has been saying to me,"Don't put me into your box, John."
'nuff said.

Tony, we are currently changing the name of our church because it has become an acronym. UBC or University Blvd Chapel. It's like keeping a secret from the people that really matter.

Just wondering if I'm missing something in the 'Be passionate' bullet point, because this sentence seems incomplete:

“I think, for a company to generate years of exceptional returns unless it first devotes itself to the pursuit of an exceptional ideal.”

I think whats missing from your list is Passionate and Relentless Vision from Leadership.

Apple is what Apple is because of the vision and passion of one man, Steve Jobs. It's interesting to note that the time when Jobs wasn't at Apple they struggled. When He's been not as involved due to his illnesses, there haven't been then iPhone/iPad being produced because he wasn't there pushing innovation and sexy design.

The stories of how passionate he is about Apple and it's products are everywhere. The secrecy, the almost slave driver attitude, the him against the world mentality. He is so intense about what he wants to see done and people respond to it because he makes them understand it, feel it, and produce it.

His vision and passion for the company and what it stands for have made it into what it is today.

It begs the question what are we that passionate about? What sort of vision do we have that we will kick, scratch and fight to see happen.

I live in a town where many of the major roads are known by nicknames that are not actually the name of the road.

I've been here almost 5 years, and it's still frustrating.

I think one of the biggest things Apple has done is acknowledge their failures and backs them up. Remember the "cube" from years ago? The failures from the design of that product paved the way for the current mac minis etc. They have a unique way to spin failure and then turn into excellence.
