I am sure you've heard it say a number of times that "content is king." This is just as true as it has ever been in communicating, connecting and building presence online. But often it is easy to think that the content is the point, that just cranking out blog posts, seeing web traffic growth and growing your personal (or organizational) awareness is where it ends. That is very wrong.

Content for content sake or just for presence sake is a tremendous waste of time. It is part of the problem so many bloggers and individuals communicating through social media have when they are trying to "monetize" their website, blog, podcast etc. Making money from just the presence of content is the most competitive market on earth, even TV Shows are FREE now through sites like hulu.

So, why is content still king then? Because of the opportunities it can bring if properly leveraged and for the people you can connect to if you follow up. Content gives you presence online, if it is good content it will attract people and as they trust you they will make themselves known. That is when the game starts. Following up with those who have made themselves known, providing opportunities for them to buy, commit, contribute or go deeper is essential.Gary Vaynerchuk would call content the start and the followup and chasing down of opportunities it can bring "the hustle."

If you are having trouble with just the content part it is extremely likely that content is the only point for you. Like a personal blog about thoughts you think. Eventually we aren't even interesting to ourselves if we aren't going for something. But if we are intentionally looking to place our selves into the midst of a conversation, if we are seeking opportunity beyond the content, and we have in mind how we are going to "hustle" to close the gap, then content starts to become very natural.

As for the Anna-is-great-but-Sarah-not-so-much argument that's frankly a red herring. If Sarah isn't doing her job well, that's a performance issue not a schedule issue. Moreover, if you start measuring your employees solely on their results and you set them clear benchmarks, rather than measuring them on how many hours a day they spend in the office, it is actually easier to see whether or not they are being productive.

Andy Stanley is kicking off the 10th year of Catalyst talking about how as leaders, we all leave a mark. But it is whether it is "our" mark, or God's mark through us.

Key quote:

"Living to make MY mark is not worth giving my life to."

Isn't it so true that our own agendas at some point even start to see as shallow and self serving as they actually are? The same is true for those that we follow. If they are for themselves it isn't nearly as compelling and powerful then when they are leading us to be about something bigger than all of us.

Whose mark are we leaving? Have we submitted our lives to God to seek his mark on our life?
