Baby rituals of celebrity moms

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 9 May 2012 02:23:00 -0700

Hollywood’s unconventional parenting techniques

Some mammas keep their child’s first tooth or a lock of baby hair, but Hilary Duff treasures something more personal: her baby boy’s belly button.

The 24-year-old new mom recently opened up to People about her 4-week-old son, Luca Cruz, and her secret stash of umbilical cord stump. Sharing too much information, Duff says her husband, retired hockey player Mike Comrie, was against keeping their son’s fallen off belly button, but she secretly saved it anyway, sealing it in a Ziploc bag and hiding it in the back of her makeup drawer. She told the magazine, “Luca’s going to think I’m a freak!” And we would have to agree with him.

Celebrities are weird at the best of times, but when they decide to multiply and become mothers, things only take a turn for the worse. Keep clicking to find out which stars practice unconventional parenting techniques and rituals.

Worst Generals in British History

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Fri, 4 May 2012 03:45:00 -0700

Arthur Percival

1887-1966

When Japan entered World War II, Britain was understandably preoccupied with Nazi Germany. The Japanese overran Hong Kong, Malay and Burma in lightning campaigns. The biggest prize, however, was Singapore, the heavily-fortified port considered “the Gibraltar of the East.” Fortunately for Japan, its opponent was the singularly inept Arthur Percival.

Percival apparently occupied a strong position. His 85,000 Commonwealth troops vastly outnumbered Yamashita’s 36,000 Japanese. But his men were badly overstretched, with few tanks or modern planes to oppose Yamashita. Percival’s myopic focus on a naval attack – he believed landward defenses would be

“bad for the morale of troops and civilians” – ceded initiative to Yamashita, who navigated the “impassible” Malay jungle and overwhelmed the British. Percival folded with a whimper, surrendering to Yamashita in “the worst disaster in British history” (Winston Churchill).

Unlike Townshend, Percival endured imprisonment just as bad as his men. Percival came out of it worse, however; he became the only Lieutenant-General in British history not to receive a knighthood.

Sir Charles Maccarthy

1764-1824

What’s worse than surrendering an entire army? How about utterly destroying one? “A decent, proud, but stupid man” (James M. Perry), MacCarthy inherited a difficult situation as Governor of Africa’s Gold Coast. Ongoing disputes with the powerful Ashanti tribe led to war in 1824. MacCarthy mismanaged the resultant campaign in bizarrely comic fashion.

MacCarthy anticipated a colonial mistake repeated by Custer, Chelmsford and Baratieri. Starting with a 6,000-man force, he divided it into four uneven columns. MacCarthy’s own force numbered a mere 500, against 10,000 Ashanti. When the Ashanti initiated battle on January 20th, the other columns were tens of miles away.

At the battle’s onset, MacCarthy ordered his musicians to play God Save the King, thinking this would scare the Ashanti away. It did not. A ferocious battle ensued, MacCarthy’s troops holding their own until ammunition began running out. Hard-pressed, MacCarthy called up his reserve ammunition, only to find macaroni instead of bullets!

The Ashanti overran and massacred the British force, with only 20 survivors. MacCarthy was killed, his heart eaten and head used as a fetish for years. It took 50 years of intermittent warfare to subdue the Ashanti.

William Hicks

1830-1883

Assigned to suppress the Mahdist Uprising in the Sudan, Hicks led what Winston Churchill called “the worst Army that has ever marched to war” – a rabble of Egyptian prisoners and ex-rebels, some shipped to the front in shackles. Arrogant British officials assumed this paltry force would put the pesky Mohammedans in their place. Hicks proved them wrong.

In fall 1883, Hicks marched his jerry-rigged 10,000-man army into Sudan. Misled by treacherous guides, Hicks’ army fell victim to the desert clime, losing hundreds to desertion and dehydration. On November 3rd, the Mahdists, 40,000 strong, finally pounced at the oasis of El Obeid. After two days of desperate fighting, the army was overrun and massacred, with all but 500 men killed (Hicks included). Hicks’ stupendous failure set the stage for Charles Gordon’s doomed stand at Khartoum and fifteen years of fighting in Sudan.

William George Keith Elphinstone

1782-1842

Britain won the Anglo-Afghan War’s first round, routing Dost Mohammed and capturing Kabul. But the Afghans hated English rule and quickly revolted. Into this firestorm stepped William Elphinstone, the only man to lose an entire British army.

Riddled with gout and heart disease, Elphinstone was a poor choice to command. He arrived in Kabul in 1842, with disaster looming. British encampments were sighted lower than Kabul’s city walls, with provisions located outside them. Afghan bandits murdered Britons who ventured out of camp.

Patrick Macrory characterizes Elphinstone as “[seeking] every man’s advice… he was at the mercy of the last speaker.” Fatally indecisive, he allowed Afghans to kill envoys Alexander Burns and William Macnaghten, capture his supplies and snipe at his men without response. Elphinstone finally capitulated, agreeing to withdraw his army to India.

Elphinstone’s army, accompanied by thousands of camp followers, staggered through the Afghan mountains. Their numbers were whittled down by disease, cold weather and incessant Afghan attacks. In the Khyber passes, the Afghans finally massacred the survivors. A single European, Dr. Brydon, survived of 16,000 who’d left Kabul. Elphinstone himself died in Afghan captivity.

Novelist George Macdonald Fraser aptly called Elphinstone “the greatest military idiot, of our own or any day.”

Sir Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend

1861-1924

To hear Charles Townshend tell it, he was a genius comparable to Napoleon and Clausewitz. The 43,000 troops lost during the Siege of Kut might beg to differ. Driven by ambition and overconfidence, Townshend led his 6th Indian Division into Britain’s greatest humiliation of World War I.

Ordered to advance on Baghdad in September 1915, Townshend expressed private misgivings. Publicly though, he leaped at the chance for glory, dreaming himself Governor of Mesopotamia. After several initial victories, stiffening Turkish resistance and heavy casualties stopped Townshend’s advance. Ordered to withdraw to Basra, Townshend instead hunkered down in the village of Kut.

Townshend’s men endured a horrific 147-day siege. Townshend made little effort to escape or prevent the Turks from surrounding him. He even forbade sorties on the grounds that “withdrawing” afterwards sapped morale! A hastily-organized relief force lost 23,000 men trying to raise the siege. His troops decimated by starvation and cholera, Townshend finally surrendered on April 29th, 1916.

Townshend enjoyed a cushy captivity in Constantinople while his troops endured forced labor. The British government was so embarrassed by Kut that they censored mention of it. Townshend became a Lieutenant-General, knight and MP, but history remembers him as an arrogant boob.

About Hungary’s President

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Tue, 1 May 2012 01:33:00 -0700

The president of Hungary had a little help writing his doctoral thesis. The president, Pal Schmitt, had his doctorate revoked Thursday after it was discovered he hijacked portions of his 1992 thesis on the Olympics straight from two other works. More than 200 pages of his 215-page thesis were either partial or direct copies. What does that leave for originality? The cover page and footnotes? He’s been mocked on the Internet with memes like Ph+D = (Ctrl+C) + (Ctrl+V), the Wall Street Journal says. Schmitt says he has no plans to resign over the scandal.

Arrest Trayvon Martin's killer

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 26 Apr 2012 22:37:00 -0700

Sanford city manager says police were barred from arresting Trayvon Martin’s killer

Ralph Barbon read this. Start a conversation »
The city manager of Sanford, Fla., says George Zimmerman wasn’t arrested despite his confession that he fatally shot Trayvon Martin because police were legally barred from doing so.
“Zimmerman provided a statement claiming he acted in self defense, which at the time was supported by physical evidence and testimony,” Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. wrote in a letter released publicly Wednesday evening. “By Florida Statute, law enforcement was PROHIBITED from making an arrest based on the facts and circumstances they had at the time.”
The Sanford Police Department has received widespread criticism for its handling of the investigation. Among other issues, it didn’t conduct a drug or alcohol test on Zimmerman, although that’s standard practice in homicide probes, and a witness has said a police officer “corrected” her claim that she heard Martin yelling for help.

The letter goes on to address several other issues related to the case. Bonaparte writes that Zimmerman’s failure to obey a 911 dispatcher’s request that he not follow Martin can be taken into account in the ongoing investigation, but adds that the request “is not a lawful order that Mr. Zimmerman would be required to follow.”
Bonaparte appears to be saying that disobeying the order wasn’t in itself a violation of law.
Bonaparte also addresses a claim made by Martin’s father, Tracey Martin: that a law enforcement official told Tracey Martin that Zimmerman wasn’t initially arrested because he had a squeaky clean image (in fact, Zimmerman had been charged in connection with assaulting a cop, though the charge was dropped).
Bonaparte writes that the official was merely telling the elder Martin how Zimmerman had portrayed himself. “We believe Mr. Martin may have misconstrued this information,” he adds.
“Let me assure you we too feel the pain of this senseless tragedy that has dramatically affected our community,” Bonaparte writes.
You can read the full letter here.
The U.S. Justice Department and the state of Florida are conducting their own separate investigations into the killing, which has sparked nationwide outrage.
Zimmerman, a white Hispanic, was patrolling the streets of a gated community in Sanford on Feb. 26, when he spotted Martin, 17, and told a police dispatcher that a “black male” was acting “suspicious.” Zimmerman, 28, ignored a warning from the dispatcher not to pursue Martin, and a violent confrontation ensued, leaving Martin dead. Zimmerman told local police he acted in self-defense, and he has not been detained or charged, though questions have been raised about the thoroughness of the police investigation.

Facts About Abraham Lincoln

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Mon, 23 Apr 2012 00:00:00 -0700

Sometimes we’re so excited to have President’s Day off work that we forget what it’s really about. President’s Day honors George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays. What follows are some mind-blowing facts about Abraham Lincoln. Hold on to your stovepipe hats…

Lincoln under-utilized his pockets

Abraham Lincoln’s actual stovepipe hat

Speaking of top hats, Lincoln’s stovepipe top hat served as more than fashionable headwear. He used it to store and carry notes, letters, even bills. Why do they call it a stovepipe hat? Well, the rise is so tall and straight up and down with no flair that it resembles a length of pipe. They’re hard to come by nowadays, the traditional top hat being much more current, but still pretty “retro”. Best you go to a custom haberdashery to get one made just for you.

Lincoln was really tall

That stovepipe hat just made a tall guy a whole lot taller. Lincoln was 6’4”, making him our country’s tallest president. That of course raises the question, who was our shortest president? 4th president James Madison stood a stately 5’4”, making him an entire foot shorter than Honest Abe – even without his hat!

Lincoln has no living heirs

Despite the fact that the marriage between Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln yielded 4 sons, there are no living heirs. Three of the four sons died before their 20th birthdays: Edward died at 4 years of age, Willie at 12 years, at Tad at 18. Robert was the only child who lived into adulthood and his last descendent died sometime in the 1980’s.

Lincoln’s son was a death-magnet

Speaking of Robert, he was sort of a magnet for tragedy. More specifically, presidential assassination tragedy. While he was not present when his dad was killed, he was an eyewitness to Garfield’s assassination, and at the same World’s Fair where McKinley was assassinated. Another interesting fact about Robert, he was saved from a train accident by Edwin Booth, the brother of his father’s killer, John Wilkes Booth.

Lincoln Like to Tinker

Lincoln’s patent: “A Device for Buoying Vessels Over Shoals”

Lincoln really liked machines and gadgets. He liked to take them apart to see how they worked and try to put them together again. He even tried his hand at inventing, and in 1849 had a patent issued for “A Device for Buoying Vessels Over Shoals”. The machine never made it, but the patent was a new thing for a president, and no president has held a patent since.

Lincoln & Kennedy

You didn’t think we’d leave it out, did you? There are some pretty bizarre coincidences between Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. Here are a couple:

Both were shot in the head with one bullet on a Friday.
Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846, Kennedy in 1946.
Lincoln’s successor (named Johnson) was born in 1808. Kennedy’s successor (also named Johnson) was born in 1908.
Lincoln’s assassin (who went by three names: John Wilkes Booth) was born in 1839.
Kenney’s assassin (who also went by three names: Lee Harvey Oswald) was born in 1939.

4. Lincoln was kind of psychic

In the weeks before his death, Lincoln was extremely melancholy. He had seen portents of his own death, and had been dreaming of death as well. On one occasion looked in the mirror and saw a double reflection, one image much paler and blurrier than the other. He told his wife that he thought it meant that he had survived his first term, but wouldn’t survive his second. The week prior to his death, Lincoln had a dream of hearing crying in a distant room of the White House. He sought out the room and found that it had a coffin in it. He asked the weeping person who had died and the person responded that it was the President. In his dream, Lincoln looked into the coffin and saw himself.

Lincoln dabbled in the occult

Not only did he get premonitions, he also believed in the occult. Well, if he didn’t believe then he was at least willing to go along with it. Because he and Mary had lost little Edward and Willie at such young ages, they actually held seances in the White House trying to contact their dearly departed. Mrs. Lincoln also attended seances at the homes of famous mediums of the day. Whether or not they made contact is unknown.

Lincoln was spiritual, not religious

Despite the last two facts, Lincoln said he was still a Christian. He didn’t, however, feel it necessary to subscribe to a particular brand of Christianity. Though many different sects try to claim him, Lincoln was 100% non-denominational. He never joined a church, didn’t say grace before meals, and spoke on a more spiritual level, rather than religious. He did read the Bible quite often, and did have a highly developed spiritual governance. When asked if he thought the Lord was on the side of the North in the Civil War, Lincoln responded, “I am not at all concerned about that…But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord’s side.”

Lincoln had a way with words

Not only was Lincoln spiritual and intelligent, he was also a heck of a speech writer. He wrote his own speeches, and it is said that his famous Gettysburg Address wasn’t even the best one! Rumor has it that the speech Lincoln made to the Illinois Republican Convention on May 29, 1856 was his best, but it was either so enthralling that nobody remembered to take notes, or it was so controversial that nobody was allowed to print them. Either way, no record of it exists.

Beautiful Nicki Minaj

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Mon, 9 Apr 2012 04:42:00 -0700

Nicki Minaj’s wardrobe is always a bit extraordinary but this 28-years (2011) old lady is currently performing in many music clips on TV with a big success. Her name is Onika Tanya Maraj, born in Trinidad and Tobago but when she was 5 years old, she moved to the Queens, New York. The commercial success brought her the album Pink Friday released in the 2010. Her music style is something new on the music scene, I would describe it like rap with cool hip-hop style.

Lady Gaga’s best and worst outfits

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Mon, 9 Apr 2012 04:36:00 -0700

The Lady’s Gaga clothes (see what we did there?) are already the stuff of legend. To celebrate her 26th birthday we pick her best and worst wardrobe choices

Gaga has so far lived up to her name
Lady Gaga has been actively involved in her weird and wonderful fashion looks over the years, even setting up her own Haus of Gaga – which sees a team of creative types doing what creative types do best – and all in the name of art and fashion.

Gaga says of the Haus: “I called all my coolest art friends and we sat in a room and I said that I wanted to make my face light up. Or that I wanted to make my cane light up. Or that I wanted to make a pair of dope sunglasses. Or that I want to make video glasses, or whatever it was that I wanted to do. It’s a whole amazing creative process”.

Sounds it. And, combined with big names designers like Thierry Mugler, Alexander McQueen and, erm, that butcher what made the meat dress, Lady Gaga has become as synonymous with krayzee style, as she has her music.

In fact, the most shocking thing she could do now, on her 26th birthday, would most likely be supping a cuppa Earl Grey in a tea dress – what’s that? She’s done that already? Jeez.

Here’s presenting Gaga’s best, worst and most shocking ‘bits’ (*chortles*):

Her 2010 MTV Video Music Awards outfit. Our all time fave. She looks like the painting of a queen who shoved her feet into the mouth of a recently fed snake. Lady Gaga’s armadillo heels were designed by the late Alexander McQueen, a firm fashion friend of Gaga’s.

Britney Spears’ wedding

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 4 Apr 2012 00:34:00 -0700

Just when you thought it might be safe to say Britney Spears was about to start leading a normal (well, as normal as it can be as a pop star) life — as wife to longtime love Jason Trawick, mama to her two adorable boys, hitmaker, perhaps X Factor judge — along comes a creepy reminder of her darkest days. Remember Sam Lufti, the guy who called himself her manager when she was at the lowest of her low? He refuses to go silently into the night and has been suing Britney for breach of contract and her folks, Jamie and Lynn Spears, for libel and defamation since 2009.

While it sounds like B’s lawyers are doing a bang-up job — cleaning up the mess while keeping her from being deposed in the trial — there’s one hitch: It looks like the trial is going to delay Britney and Jason’s wedding.

Reportedly, the trial date is set for September 11, 2012. She could get married before then, but then she’d be attempting to get married under her conservatorship, and a judge would have to sign off on it. And if that were to happen, Lufti’s lawyers would cry foul and say she should be able to be deposed. Ugh. Poor Brit!

My heart really goes out to her having to battle this nasty remnant from her past, even as she tries to move on and enjoy her new life. We all want to see her happy and healthy, and surely, this Lufti debacle isn’t doing her any favors.

Thankfully, a “source” says she’s perfectly happy being engaged for now and getting married later in the year. When it does, the wedding will probably take place in her hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana, and it sounds really low-key, low-stress. Thank goodness, because the last thing Britney needs is more drama. Here’s hoping her legal team can close the book on this disaster of a chapter in her life ASAP!

Bizarre Lady Gaga

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Mon, 2 Apr 2012 00:11:00 -0700

Lady Gaga, known for insisting she was born with facial prosthetics and hatching out of an egg at the Grammys, has announced she wants to have her own little monster, reports the Daily Star. She first broke the news to the family of her boyfriend Taylor Kinney, who plays a monster on “The Vampire Diaries.” There’s no talk of a wedding yet, only Gaga’s determination that hunky Taylor’s genes need replicating, and the family is supportive. Taylor’s aunt declared, “There’s no doubt he loves her and she loves him. Now everyone’s met her, we love her too!” Lady Gaga, 25, may hear that biological clock ticking, but considering her habit of slipping into alter egos (such as Jo Calderone), it could be just as likely that “expectant mother” is only another role to play

Famous Nick Cannon

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 29 Mar 2012 21:52:00 -0700

Nick Cannon says he’s been diagnosed with a lupus-like autoimmune disease that contributed to his recent health scares.

The 31-year-old “America’s Got Talent” host tells People.com that the condition came to light after his hospitalization in January for kidney failure, as well as his treatment last month for two blood clots discovered in his lungs.

“The blood clot thing was probably the scariest because … I’ve known people who have passed away from that,” he told the magazine at a DJ gig Wednesday night in New York. “I thought I was getting better,” Cannon added, “and then that happened, so that kind of came out of nowhere.”

Cannon said that as far as he knows, no one else in his family suffers from the condition. “They kind of say [my] autoimmune [disease] is – like a lupus type of thing, but no one else in my family has it.”

For now, the husband of Mariah Carey and father of twins says he’s trying to take care of himself, put his health first and focus on recovery. “I feel blessed to be alive. If it wasn’t discovered, I don’t know [what would have happened].”
