Earthquakes and Makita's new demo hammer HM1214C - what's the connection? Basically, Makita has adapted the science of earthquake engineering into power tools with their Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT). What is AVT? "Makita’s exclusive AVT involves engineering where a mechanical damper, effectively a counter balance weight, provides an equal and opposite force that puts a mass directly opposite the point at which the striker bolt delivers the impact. As vibration is eliminated power is efficiently increased, allowing more of the generated energy in the motor to be delivered to the tool bit."

Jay Leno's 3D Printer Solves Antiquated Parts Woes

TV show host and noted classic car collector Jay Leno had a problem. Many of his prized rare cars utilize parts that have been out of production for sometimes as long as one hundred years. In many cases, the only way to solve that problem was to go thru the very expensive and tedious process of hand machining individual parts. Until now.

Thanks to 21st century technology, Jay Leno solved his antiquated parts woes using a sophisticated three dimensional laser scanner and plastic printing system. The old part is placed in front of the scanner, which produces an incredibly accurate three dimensional computer model of the part in just 10-20 minutes. This model is fed to a 3d "printer", which produces a prototype part out of plastic. This finished 3d model can then be made into a mold to make additional copies out of almost any material. For more sophisticated models, the 3d printer can take sometimes dozens of hours to produce a copy.

Says Jay "When someone tells you that you can take a crescent wrench, for example, scan it, then press a button, copy it, and make a new wrench... guys say, �Well, that�s not possible. You can�t make the little wheel that moves the claw in and out. You�d have to make it in two sections. But they�re wrong. You can duplicate the whole tool."

This technology is already years old, but until now, it's been only accessible by industrial operations with deep pockets. While Jay Leno is certainly no everyman, it's apparent that this technology is getting more refined and consequently less expensive, so it may be attainable by many of us in the very near future. I can't wait for the day that I have a 3d printer and scanner on my desk!

I think that Makita has the coolest selection of brand apparel - as far as power tool companies go. Mainly because they have an entire women's category, that includes clothing like this fitted black long sleeve t-shirt with the RockStar/Makita logo. First, let me explain that a center for independent living is not a place where people go to live, it is an agency run by people with disabilities providing services to others with disabilities throughout a multi-county area. One of the micro-enterprise startups is a project of building wooden shipping containers from scrap donated by a local cabinet maker. The participants in this endeavor have disabilities, as do I. Though I remain a hobbyist woodworker, I became blind some 20 years ago. I have had to adapt some systems to accommodate my inability to see, like measuring with a standard tape, and following cut lines, however such are not impossible. I thank you for selecting me and continuing to allow the dreams of this old blind man, and many around him, come true."

DIY Track Saw

This guy didn't have the money to purchase a ready-made track saw (plunge-cut circular saw) like the DeWalt DWS520SK , Festool 561174 TS 55 EQ , or Makita SP6000K , so he cleverly made his own. "I made this with a Makita saw that has a solid aluminum base. I got 3/4 inch track from Rockler and bolted it on the base of the saw. The only thing that maters for location is that it is parallel to the blade. I cut threads into the base for the allen head bolts and then used a not on top to lock it. The 3/4inch groove in the plywood was milled with a router and a level as a straight edge."

I tested out the Milwaukee Diamond Grit "the Torch" sawzall blade yesterday and was impressed that it cut through 1 inch steel cast iron pipe in less than one minute. Milwaukee states that "the Torch" has up to 30 times the life of a regular carbide blade which gives it a cost per cut of about 21 cents. This longevity is due to the diamond grit which makes up the cutting edge of the sawzall blade. The blades come in a 6 inch or 9 inch size and are designed to cut through materials such as cast iron, grade 5 tile, ceramic tile, plaster, masonry, brick and fiberglass. I've included a video post to show you the versatality of the Torch sawzall blade.

I recommend that you try the Torch sawzall blade out for yourself. The Torch Sawzall Blade features coarse industrial diamond grit embedded in high strength nickel and is a standard size made to fit on any sawzall (not just Milwaukee brand). Rick, I live in Western Colorado and expect to buy a SawStop from you guys. My question is, how much better is the dust collection on the professional SawStop than on the contractor's saw, and how much better is the contractor's saw than my Bosch 4000?? Will the table saw still be the dirtiest tool in the bunch and put fine dust into the air (in which case both space and dust considerations would have me leave the table saw in the garage)? Or is the professional fully housebroken? ~Ashton

By the way, we have the new SawStop PCS Table Saw Demo Unit on our sales floor.

Dust collection for most table saws is good, at best. I personally own the SawStop Cabinet Saw and prior to that I owned a Delta Unisaw, neither of which are great for dust collection. I utilize a Delta 50-850 Dust Collector (1200 CFM) for dust collection. Depending on the type of cut and material I�m using will depend on how much dust I get into the air. I use a JDS 750 Ambient Air Cleaner to assist in air cleaning.

This wouldn't give you practical job conditions or good use of your time and they may not even have all the brands of drill/drivers you want to compare. You could google compact and subcompact drill/driver reviews and read through each drill/driver individual review and then make a chart to compare the features. Or you could just read the tool test article written by Tools of the Trade Magazine.

I've got the Bostitch CPACK-3 compressor and 3 gun combo kit that I picked up at the Toolking Superstore last year for a steal. Since then, we borrowed a flooring nailer and flooring mallet to install our hardwood floor because to purchase one for just one install didn't make sense. Stanley-Bostitch makes a great product and as far as flooring nailers, I recommend the MFN201 Flooring Nailer with it's HFM-3 graphite mallet counterpart.

DeWalt Drill Becomes Surgical Tool in Australia

Get this: In Northern Australia, a country doctor saved the life of a young boy by drilling into his skull with a DeWalt drill. The boy was riding his bike and fell off, injuring his head. The boy was brought to see a doctor, who recognized the signs of internal bleeding in the skull, which puts pressure on the brain and can easily result in death. Lacking the proper neurological surgical drilling tool, Doctor Rob Carson found the next best thing: a DeWalt drill from the hospital's maintenance department.

A neurosurgeon in Melbourne walked Dr. Carson through the procedure over the phone. Somehow, the risky procedure was successful and the clot was successfully removed. The boy was then airlifted 1100 miles to a children's hospital in Melbourne for additional treatment.

"If you are in that situation you just do those things," Dr. Carson said.

I suppose the end justifies the means.

Milwaukee M12 Cordless LED Worklight

Last year when Milwaukee introduced their original M12 work light, the question on my mind was "Why not LED?" With a powerful magnet built into the handle so you could easily stick it to something and a head that rotated 90 degrees, the 49-24-0145 was a nice flashlight but it used a halogen bulb instead of LED. While the ends may justify the means, the true benefit of LED over halogen is the low power consumption and long life.

Not even a year later, Milwaukee brings us the new and improved 49-24-0146 M12 LED Flashlight! It's almost the same as the previous model, only it sports a bright white 160 Lumen Cree� XRE LED instead of a halogen bulb and improved metallic reflector. This new model provides up to twice the runtime of the previous model and the LED has a lifetime warranty. Unless you really try to destroy it, the LED bulb will last tens of thousands of hours and will likely never need to be replaced.

Milwaukee has really been upping the bar on the latest round of M12 powered "jobsite solutions". We're hearing that there is even more stuff in the pipeline...I can't wait to see what's next!
