A more detailed look at the Dremel Multi-Max Oscillating Multi-tool reveals even more exciting features about this new multi-use tool.

Compared to Fein MultiMaster, the Dremel has a narrower body which for smaller hands makes it easier to handle. The Dremel has a shorter cord and the accessories are not of the same quality as Fein's accessories. The blades and scrapers are made of thinner metal and have a smaller cutting area. On hte Dremel, they are switched out with a hex screw as opposed to the new Top Action Lever System on the newer Fein Multimasters. However, the Dremel states that their accessories also fit the Fein Multi-Master 636 and the Bosch Multi-X PS50 with a separate accessory attachment that is not included.

Hey Rick! I just bought my first router and I want to make sure that I bought the right one. I got a router kit, as I have the money to do it right now and might not in the future. I picked up the Craftsman Professional 12.5 amp fixed/plunge/d-handle combo kit the other day and paid $219 for it. After reading some reviews out there for other brand routers (it's tough to find reviews on Craftsman products other than the Sears website), I'm not sure I have made the best choice. I know I got a lot of options for my money, but I'd rather have the better cutting tool for my money, quality over quantity, ya know? Anyway, any direction you could give me on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Dustin

Thanks for the inquiry.

Several manufacturers make nice routers, including Sears. I personally own an older Sears Craftsman 1 horsepower router and it has done a great job for me on smaller projects. Certainly the best way to purchase any router is in a combination pack (fixed/plunge). I also personally own Bosch, Festool and Porter-Cable routers and I use them on more demanding/heavier projects. I'm sure you will experience great success with your Craftsman product.

We finally finished adding onto our deck this weekend. Really finished this time. With that task, I took the opportunity to check out the new Bosch 18v Brute Tough Hammer Drill/Driver 17618-01 and was grateful for how quickly it helped us get the job completed.

With over 650 inch pounds of torque supplied by the Bosch 17618-01, we had no problem drilling quick holes for concrete lag bolts. The high speed mode produces 2050 rpm and up to 30,750bpm! The 18v Bosch Hammer Drill made even easier work of fastening lag bolts into pressure treated 4x4's.

I know that this has absolutely nothing to do with power tools but its Friday and I just couldn't help myself.

Everyone needs a hand sometimes. But sometimes there is no one is around to help. So FastCap LLC has come up with this micro-jack tool called the Little Hand HD that "may just make your job and life easier."

The Little Hand is basically a mini-jack with a 6" x 6" top and bottom that you can use, for instance, to hold up cabinets while you screw them into the wall. For 30 bucks, it's cheaper than hiring an assistant. The Little Hand can be adjusted from 16.5" to 22.8" and will support up to 70 pounds.

If you need a longer arm then the bigger Little Hand, aka: Third Hand, extends from 57" to 144" and will hold up to 1500 pounds. That's quite a bit more load than my little brother can hold AND it's only 39 dollars.

ReMARKable Hand Made Pens

Mark and Dawn Ewell have been turning wood for many years. The result has been quite a collection of pens crafted from woods such as aspen, birch, cocobolo, hickory, purple heart, walnut and zebrawood or other products manufactured just for pen making. The photo to the left shows one of their hand-made pens that was crafted out of Colordao Aspen (available at ReMARKablepens.com).

The Ewell's inspiration came from a demonstration on pen turning at a national woodworking show in 2004. After retirement, they had been looking for a project that they could do together and this demo struck a chord with them. They began by purchasing a JET Wood-turning Lathe and the pen making progressed from there.

Bosch Multi-Tool PS50

I'm almost embarrassed to admit how excited I am to get my hands on the new Bosch Multi-tool PS50. I don't have anything except this photo to stare longingly at - but soon they tell me.

In the meantime, some of the very cool features that Bosch is bragging about include: a 240-degree adjustable tool holder and variable speed dial (5,000-20,000 rpm); 12v cordless with more power than competing multi-tools (30-minute charge time on battery); super-lightweight at 2.2 pounds (including battery); and that the PS50 is the most ergonomic multi-purpose oscillating tool while performing the fastest in cutting and sanding applications.

We don't know exactly how much smoke their blowing...

10 Awesome Tool-Like iPhone/iPod Touch Apps

Since the iTunes App Store launched two months ago it has amassed a collection of over 2,000 different applications in every flavor imaginable, from the bizarre to the indispensable. Because there is such a huge variety of apps now, you can find all sorts of unconventional things that expand the usefulness of your iPhone or iPod Touch in awesome and unexpected ways. Here's ten examples of tool-like iPhone/iPod Touch apps that should give you an idea of what I am talking about:

A Level - You may remember this one from Ben's article about it. Using the accelerometer built into the iPhone/iPod Touch, A Level gives you a virtual level complete with calibration capabilities and a ruler to make it as accurate as possible. A Level costs $0.99.
Tape Measure - This one has a slightly misleading name, but it's still an awesome app. It won't allow you to take small-scale measurements like the size of a room in your house, but it will measure approximate distances on a larger scale; for example, if you want to measure a good-sized lot or figure out how far your house is from the supermarket as-the-crow-flies, Tape Measure can do it for you. It can also give you your current elevation, latitude and longitude. This app is most useful on the iPhone 3G because it relies heavily on GPS--a feature that is missing from older iPhones and the iPod Touch--to perform its measurements. Tape Measure costs $0.99.
