Dear PM: What's Fiscal Responsibility?

The World's Largest Arms Importer

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-12729363 reports: "A report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) says India accounted for 9% of all weapons imports between 2006 and 2010." Since I started running a firm here, I have realized just how easy it is for DRDO and other government research labs to do shoddy work and make loads of money from massive contracts that they regularly give out to bidders for their tenders. What I've seen has made me really suspicious about all defence procurement in India - especially the recent airplane deals. For once, shame on the PM - the guy's supposed to be an economist.

Maybe I'm cynical, but I liked something about this blog post: http://greatbong.net/2010/11/09/an-open-letter/ ... or maybe it's just hard to agree with a purchase of fighter airplanes just after surveys have shown that half the children in the country don't get enough food to eat.

'A Waste' vs 'A Deal'

Indian moon mission - cost about $78 million - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7679818.stm - 'The mission is expected to cost 3.8bn rupees (£45m; $78m), considerably less than Japanese and Chinese probes sent to the Moon last year. But the Indian government's space efforts have not been welcomed by all. Some critics regard the space programme as a waste of resources in a country where millions still lack basic services.' Then the Indian Government agrees to buy 300 fighter planes from Russia - cost about $30 billion - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-11492777 - 'The deal, which could be worth up to $30bn, is believed to be the richest in India's military history.
I just realised that what the CWG spent on the games was more than Wipro's annual revenues. More than half of that was supposedly on purely sports-related expenditure (not the airport, roads or city beautification). Sources Wikipedia and the Wipro 2009 annual report.

Third Petrol Pump Scam

I discovered yet another trick used at petrol pumps to cheat gullible customers. The electronic meters can be set to final value with the push of a button. I saw the meter jump from Rs. 401.25 to Rs. 500 when the operator pushed a button. When I protested, he just said that no matter what I saw, the pump had given me 500 bucks' worth of petrol. The cheat. Avoid the Sita Circle pump or any pump where an employee tries to distract you (usually with a mild protest about the money you have given them) while the petrol is being dispensed.

Freedoms that Matter

I feel like listing some freedoms I think we have in/near Bangalore that are sort of hard to spot sometimes ... the freedom to have basic, simple, honest, dont-hurt-anyone, i-can-be-not-you differences (of course with problems, imperfections, complexities, limitations, space-constraints, and please-don't-tell-my-mom constraints), the freedom to be imperfect, to drive through red-lights when there's no traffic going across, to be insensitive, to step on others' toes, to be inconsiderate, to be uncouth, to be unguarded, to be corrupt, to be poor, to be weak, to be impolite, to be naive, to be lazy, to be afraid, to never grow up, to dress french, to dress arabic, to dress indian, to dress tibetan, to dress east asian, to dress bad, to be unfashionable, to be fashionable, to not dress at all ... Is real freedom just freedom of choice (as in, being able to pick from 20 types of toilet paper) or is it the freedom to pick and live by any value system I please?
