Overall, 2026 has proven to be a good year for cinema, where films that rate high with critics also seem to rate high with audiences…something that does not always work out in such a way. Case in point is the exception: Dreamworks’ Forgotten Island, which despite boasting an intriguing premise, an electric animation style and a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating, was completely ignored by ticket-buyers this year.

The movie is technically still playing in cinemas (it was tenth in the box office ranks last weekend) but with 1,400 screens no longer showing the film, and more taking the reels down this coming week, its chance there is over. Forgotten Island is getting an early shove onto home video formats, where it’s hoped more people will see it, check it out and fall in love with it. The earliest release is on digital one week from now, October 27, followed by a physical Blu-Ray, 4K UHD and DVD release on December 1.

As Forgotten Island opens, Jo and Raissa have been besties their entire lives, but the looming reality of separate colleges after graduation threatens to tear them apart. Relatable (and told before), but the real hook comes when the girls are warped onto the mythical island of Nakali, and told they may not be able to escape the enchanted land without losing their memories of each other. Being separated by hundreds of miles is one thing…forgetting your best friend ENTIRELY is another. Can Jo and Raissa figure out how to get out of their predicament without losing each other forever?

For a “failed” movie there are sure quite a lot of bonus features, which as far as we know are available on all home releases of the film:

• Friends for Life
  • H.E.R. and Liza Soberano share how their characters’ friendship grows into something that feels like family.
• Creatures of Lore
  • Meet the vibrant creatures of Forgotten Island as the cast and filmmakers reveal their modern take on Filipino mythology.
• Tayo Na! The Making of Forgotten Island
  • Step inside Forgotten Island to discover how its anime-inspired look, Nakali, and unforgettable characters were created.
• Friendship and Filipino Culture
  • Travel through the Philippines with directors Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado as they explore the roots of Forgotten Island.
• The Sounds of Forgotten Island
  • Explore how music helped define the world of Forgotten Island, blending culture, and storytelling into a unique sonic journey.
• “A Parallel World” Lyric Video
  • Sing along to the official BINI track from Forgotten Island with this vibrant lyric video celebrating friendship, adventure, and discovery.
• How to Draw: The Wild Pack
  • Bungi
  • Tiyanak
  • Prince Mermahn
  • Raww
• Feature Commentary with writers/directors Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado

If you missed Forgotten Island the first time, which examining the numbers you probably did, don’t make the same mistake twice. Also…Laika’s Wildwood releases this weekend, a film with equally glowing reviews and fascinating animation. BUY A TICKET FOR WILDWOOD NOW, YOU FOOLS!

There’s a particular kind of pain that only Steal a Brainrot players understand. You spend ages saving for a good Brainrot, finally get it into your base, and turn around for a few seconds. When you look back, somebody is carrying it toward the exit.

Welcome to the game.

Steal a Brainrot looks simple enough when you first join. Funny-looking characters move down a conveyor belt, you buy them, and they make money. But after a few rounds, you realize the expensive part isn’t always buying a Brainrot. It’s keeping it.

If you’re new to the Roblox game, here’s how to get through those first sessions without making every expensive mistake yourself.

Don’t Spend Your First Cash on the Flashiest Brainrot

When you spawn, you’ll see Brainrots walking along the Red Carpet. Some are cheap, some are ridiculously expensive, and occasionally something appears that makes everyone on the server rush toward it.

Ignore the expensive stuff for now.

Your first job is to get something earning money inside your base. Noobini Pizzanini is a familiar starter option. It isn’t impressive, but you don’t need to be impressed yet.

Buy a cheap Brainrot, wait for it to arrive, and collect the money it generates. Then get another one.

Here’s where new players often go wrong: they see a better-looking Brainrot and immediately spend every dollar they have.

A more expensive unit might be worth buying, but check what it actually earns.

Imagine you’ve saved $20,000. One Brainrot costs $8,000 and makes $100 per second. Another costs $20,000 but only makes $150 per second.

The second one earns more, sure. But the first returns its purchase cost in 80 seconds, compared with roughly 133 seconds for the expensive option.

Those are example numbers, not actual in-game prices. The point is that purchase price and earning speed should be considered together.

During your first session, I would rather have several affordable earners than one expensive Brainrot surrounded by empty slots.

Once your base is producing decent cash, you can afford to be pickier.

Know When to Replace a Brainrot

Filling your base is only the beginning. Eventually, you’ll run out of space.

That’s when you need to stop thinking about how many Brainrots you own and start thinking about which ones deserve their spots.

Let’s say your weakest unit makes $50 per second. You spot another that earns $500.

That’s a straightforward upgrade if you can afford it.

But what if the new one only makes $60? Unless you need it for your Index or another progression requirement, replacing your existing unit probably isn’t urgent.

This is also why I wouldn’t sell or discard something just because its rarity looks unimpressive.

Check its income first. Mutations and traits can make an ordinary-looking Brainrot surprisingly valuable.

And if you’re working toward a particular rebirth, keep an eye on which Brainrots the game requires. Getting rid of one you need can mean hunting it down again.

Sometimes the Brainrot you want just won’t show up on the Red Carpet. You can keep waiting, try trading with other players, or check a Steal a Brainrot shop to see what’s available. If you’re comparing listings, pay attention to the mutation and cash-per-second value, not just the Brainrot’s name. Those details can make a big difference.

Mutations Can Matter More Than Rarity

Sooner or later, you’ll notice two players owning what appears to be the same Brainrot, except one makes far more money.

There’s usually a reason.

Mutations change a Brainrot’s appearance and increase its earnings. Gold, Diamond, and Rainbow are three examples you’ll encounter.

A Gold mutation provides a 1.25× income multiplier. Diamond increases that to 1.5×, while Rainbow offers 10×.

So a Brainrot that normally makes $2,000 per second would produce $20,000 with a Rainbow mutation, before considering other applicable bonuses.

That’s a pretty big difference.

The game also has additional mutations, including ones associated with special events. Don’t assume the three examples above are the entire collection.

Then there are traits, which are a separate system.

A Brainrot generally has one mutation, but it can also receive traits that affect its earnings. These bonuses can affect income in different ways, so don’t assume that every listed multiplier applies directly to the final amount.

Rather than trying to calculate everything from memory, look at the income displayed on the Brainrot itself.

One more thing: a heavily mutated Brainrot is also the kind of thing other players notice. The moment you get something valuable, defending it becomes a much bigger priority.

Your Base Lock Is More Important Than Your Gear

I learned this lesson the annoying way: you can own useful defensive equipment and still lose a Brainrot because you forgot to lock the base.

The lock is part of your base. It isn’t something you purchase from the gear shop.

At the beginning, the protection lasts for a limited period, typically 60 seconds before rebirth upgrades. When the timer runs out, other players have another chance to enter.

That means locking once and forgetting about it isn’t much of a strategy.

If you’re about to leave for the Red Carpet, check the timer. If you see someone waiting near your entrance, don’t wander off just because a tempting Brainrot appeared.

Higher rebirth levels can extend your lock duration, which makes managing a valuable collection easier.

Where Should You Put Your Best Brainrots?

Once you’ve unlocked additional floors, avoid making your most valuable units the easiest ones to reach.

A thief who has to travel farther through your base gives you more time to notice what’s happening.

Of course, this doesn’t make your collection untouchable. Someone who catches your base unlocked can still cause trouble.

Think of placement as buying yourself a few extra seconds, not guaranteeing safety.

Slap, Trap, or Speed Coil?

You don’t need to collect every piece of gear immediately.

Slap is useful when someone is trying to escape with a Brainrot. A well-timed hit can knock the player back and interrupt their attempt.

Trap works differently. It can temporarily immobilize someone who triggers it, making it useful around routes thieves frequently take.

Speed Coil helps you move faster while it’s equipped. That can be handy when crossing the map or chasing another player.

These are separate tools with different purposes. None replaces the Base Lock.

If you keep losing Brainrots to players who escape before you can catch them, focus on defense first. If you’re spending too much time traveling around the map, mobility may be more useful.

And don’t assume a Speed Coil will let you sprint home normally while carrying a stolen Brainrot. Stealing imposes movement and equipment restrictions.

Check the current shop for prices and unlock conditions before buying, since available gear can change as you progress.

Stealing Sounds Easy Until You’re the One Carrying Something

Picture this: another player has an expensive Brainrot sitting near the front of their base. Their lock has expired, and they’re busy watching the Red Carpet.

Looks like an easy steal.

Maybe it is.

But picking up the Brainrot is only half the job. You still need to carry it back to your own base.

That’s the part beginners underestimate.

Your movement becomes more restricted while carrying a stolen unit, and you can’t count on using all your usual equipment to escape.

Before going inside, look at the route home.

Is your base nearby? Is the owner watching? Are other players standing between you and the exit?

If the target is on the other side of the map, the trip back might be more trouble than it’s worth.

I would take a moderately valuable Brainrot from a poorly defended nearby base over a rare one that requires crossing half the server.

And if the owner notices you before you’ve picked anything up, don’t feel obligated to keep going.

If the owner spots you, forget the steal. Head back, collect your cash, and look for another opening. Spending five minutes fighting over one Brainrot usually isn’t worth it.

Rebirth: What You Lose and What You Keep

That Rebirth button gets harder to ignore once your base starts making decent money. Extra floors, a better cash multiplier, more time on your base lock—there’s plenty to look forward to.

But don’t press it just yet.

Open the menu and look at the Brainrots it asks for. You’ll need those exact units, plus enough cash to cover the requirement. The list changes with each rebirth, so something you needed last time might be completely different now.

One detail catches people out, especially if they’ve been watching older tutorials. Rebirth mechanics have changed over time, so don’t rely on older tutorials. In the current version, rebirthing takes the Brainrots listed in the requirements and most of your cash, while the rest of your stored collection remains.

There’s one awkward exception worth remembering: a Brainrot that’s still making its way to your base may not survive the reset. Let incoming purchases arrive before you rebirth.

Getting Ready for Your First Rebirth

Say the menu wants two particular Brainrots. You have one already, but the other hasn’t shown up on the Red Carpet.

Keep the first one. Don’t replace it just because something with better earnings comes along.

While you’re waiting for the second, collect cash as usual. Once you’re getting close to rebirth, prioritize the required Brainrots and cash target. Buying another income-producing unit can still be worthwhile if the extra earnings justify the delay.

Got both Brainrots and the cash? Take a quick look around before confirming. If you’ve just purchased something valuable, let it reach your base. If a special event is underway, you can finish what you’re doing first.

Then rebirth and see how quickly your remaining collection starts bringing in money with the new multiplier.

After rebirthing, see what you still have and rebuild around your improved earning multiplier.

You may be surprised how quickly cash starts coming in compared with your first session.

That’s the real attraction of rebirth: making later progression easier, not simply increasing a number beside your name.

Taco Tuesday, Admin Abuse, and Other Event Opportunities

Ordinary Red Carpet purchases are fine, but special events can change what appears in the game.

Two names you’ll hear frequently are Taco Tuesday and Admin Abuse.

Taco Tuesday is associated with taco-themed gameplay effects and opportunities to obtain Brainrots with the Taco trait.

Admin Abuse sessions are developer-run events that can introduce unusual spawns, temporary effects, and other surprises.

They’re worth watching, particularly if you’re looking for event-related Brainrots or traits.

However, don’t plan your entire week around a schedule copied from an old video.

Taco Tuesday is generally associated with Tuesdays, while major update-related Admin Abuse sessions have commonly taken place on Saturdays. Exact times, availability, and rewards can change.

Check the game’s latest announcements before joining.

And remember that everyone else wants the interesting spawns too. If you leave your base open while chasing an event Brainrot, you might return to find your collection missing something.

Lucky Blocks offer another possible source of Brainrots. Their rewards depend on the block type and available pool, so don’t treat an expensive Lucky Block as a guaranteed shortcut to a valuable unit.

Three Situations Every Beginner Runs Into

Someone Is Waiting Outside Your Base

Don’t panic and unlock the entrance to confront them.

Check your timer, keep your valuable Brainrots protected, and wait for a safer moment to leave.

If the lock expires while you’re distracted, that player may get exactly the opening they wanted.

A Rare Brainrot Appears, but You’re Almost Broke

Ask yourself whether buying it will actually help.

If you can afford it and its income is a major improvement, great. If the purchase leaves you with almost nothing and the income isn’t much better, letting it go may be smarter.

There will be other opportunities.

You Just Lost Your Best Brainrot

It happens.

Instead of immediately trying to steal something equally expensive, look at what went wrong.

Did the lock expire? Were you too far from home? Did the thief use a route you weren’t watching?

Fix that problem before replacing the unit. Otherwise, you may lose the next one in exactly the same way.

A Few Questions New Players Usually Ask

Should I buy expensive Brainrots or save for rebirth?

It depends on how close you are to the requirements. Early on, better earners help you build cash faster. Once you’re approaching rebirth, collecting the required units becomes more important.

Can Brainrots make money when I’m offline?

Yes, offline earnings are available, although they are usually reduced compared with active play. You’ll need to return to collect them.

Can I stop every theft?

No defense is perfect. Your lock, base layout, and equipment reduce opportunities for thieves, but none guarantees that you’ll never lose a Brainrot.

What should I do when I join a new server?

Check your collection and base lock first. Then look at the Red Carpet, see whether any events are active, and decide whether you’re buying upgrades or working toward rebirth.

One Last Thing

You don’t need to play Steal a Brainrot like the richest person on the server.

Some sessions you’ll find a great Brainrot. Other times you’ll spend ten minutes watching someone carry away something you worked hard to buy.

The game is much less frustrating when you stop chasing every rare spawn and pay attention to what your base actually needs.

Make some money. Keep your good units protected. Take a steal when there’s a real opening.

And before you run after that shiny new Brainrot, check your lock timer.

Seriously. Check it out.

If you missed The Simpsons last night, then you missed one of the most significant episodes the show has aired in years. We can’t go into it while the innocent are still here, so to everyone who hasn’t seen it yet and would like to go into it virginal, this is your warning to back out of the article and load the episode on Hulu before someone on social media inevitably spoils it for you.

.

.

Earlier this year, the show announced it would be doing TWO Treehouse of Horror episodes instead of one. The first would be called “The Revengening” and would be one solid half-hour macabre tale, as opposed to the traditional three shorts. It aired last night, and the plot was immediately recognizable as a riff on “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which the series already spoofed in a 1999 ToH called “I Know What You Di-Iddly-Did.” I prepared myself for an inferior waste of time…but got something else.

It’s less the repeat target of parody and more where it led to. Everybody in Springfield had accidentally murdered the same man on Halloween night, who came back for revenge the following year with a hacksaw and some threatening warning notes that simply said “KARMA.” Eventually all the survivors were sequestered inside city hall, where the murderer stepped on stage and revealed himself to be…Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

Apu has not been heard on The Simpsons since the bombshell documentary “The Problem With Apu” came out in 2017. Comedian Hari Kondabolu felt the character was a mockery of his race and culture, especially since there was a white actor behind the scenes. After the doc released, Harry Shearer voluntarily stepped down from the role. Apu’s appearances since then have been incredibly rare and only in background scenes, never in a speaking role.

In the wake of “The Problem With Apu” other animated shows recast characters of color who had up to that point been voiced by white actors…but the #1 target never did so. “Some things will be dealt with at a later date,” Marge Simpson told the audience in a 2018 episode. “If at all,” added Lisa. It seemed like The Simpsons’ “fix” for Apu was just going to be to hide him, rather than deal with the issue directly.

A new report on Variety reveals that the idea to finally bring Apu back came from staff writer Nick Dahan and co-executive producer Cesar Mazariegos, who pitched the idea of “The Revengening” to executive producer Matt Selman. Of course to do this, they would have to finally recast Apu and deal with the issues he caused. The role was offered to South Asian actor Sunil Malhotra, who has voiced characters on The Legend Of Vox Machina, The Loud House and The Legend of Korra.

“When my agent called me about a ‘Simpsons’ audition, I knew exactly what role it was for, and the idea actually made my stomach sink,” Malhotra told the press. “But admittedly, part of me was also curious. It had been eight years since Apu had spoken on the show, and it got me thinking: Did the writers’ room look different now? Could they bring him back in a way that acknowledged and apologized for past mistakes? Could I make the character my own, and reclaim him in some way? And could they achieve all of that in an unmistakably ‘Simpsons’ way that didn’t disappoint fans?”

“I told casting that I’d only consider an offer if I could meet showrunner Matt Selman and co-executive producer Cesar Mazariegos, both of whom gladly did so. It was the beginning of a deeply collaborative experience that I hope is equally satisfying for longtime fans of ‘The Simpsons’ and for other South Asian kids who, like me, stopped watching at some point along the way.”

“The Revengening” was also the recasting debut of several other characters in the series. Apu’s wife Manjula was also previously played by white actors (first Jan Hooks, then Tress MacNeille) but is now voiced by Janina Gavankar (Alan Wake II). Dr. Nick Riviera makes an appearance and is now voiced by Eric Lopez, who also took over Bumblebee Man in an earlier episode.

The re-appearance of Apu comes just a year before the scheduled premiere of The New Simpsons Movie (title not finalized) and we have to wonder if part of the motivation behind cleaning this up was so he could be included in that film. It hits theaters around Labor Day of 2027.

The post The Story Behind Last Night’s Simpsons Shocker (Yes, The Show Can Still Shock) appeared first on Anime Superhero News.

Glitch Productions has become the most popular indie animation production company in recent times, with its most popular series, The Amazing Digital Circus, ending in June 2026. Glitch Productions is hoping to recreate that success with Knights of Guinevere. The pilot for Knights of Guinevere premiered last year, and this second episode was released on October 9, 2026. Knights of Guinevere was created by Dana Terrance, the creator of The Owl House at Disney. Episode 2 of Knights of Guinevere is about as far as you can get from Disney.

The second episode picks up the story right where the pilot ended and seems like a second part of a two-part episode. The main characters, Frankie and Andi, who live on a planet based around a theme park, found a robot named Gwen, based on the park’s mascot, Guinevere. Olivia, the theme park’s deranged owner, is obsessed with obtaining Gwen, having owned her as a child. This episode deals with a lot of content that is much different than Dana Terrance’s work with Disney, featuring violence, swearing, drug use and abuse. But it is also adult in deeper ways, tackling some deeper themes.

Andi is forced to work for Frankie’s boss, Sparky, after she was fired from the corporation that runs the theme park. Andi talks back to Sparky, and Frankie suggests she back off, noting that Sparky beats her and removes her teeth, and Sparky likes her, implying that Sparky does worse things to people who anger him. This episode also reveals that Sparky is a major crime boss, with his hands in several illegal businesses. We also meet Krash, Sparky’s off-the-books doctor. Sparky plans to reprogram Gwen and sell her for a ton of money. In response, Gwen runs away, ending up in a nightclub. Gwen imagines the robots working at the nightclub to be characters from her movies and imagines a creepy undercover park cop named Armend as a prince from her movies.

Armend attempts to report to Olivia that he found the Gwen robot, but Gwen flips out and attacks him, remembering the abuse from Olivia and shooting Armend in the process. Andi and Frankie come across the injured Armend and manage to address most of his wounds, and Andi uses drugs to make Armend quiet. Andi and Frankie find Gwen in the club, but Armend returns, now high and even more violent than before. Frankie fights Armend and is losing to him, when Gwen gets involved and gives Armend an even more serious injury. Andi and Frankie take Armend back to Krash to patch him up, but Krash reveals he has died. Krash tells Andi and Frankie that he will hide the body, but that he will not lie to Sparky about this incident.

The animation in this episode is pretty good, a marked improvement over the pilot. The voice acting is also pretty good, with the voice actors for Frankie, Andi, Sparky and Gwen nailing their roles. This episode also uses a fair number of voice actors from The Owl House to fill out the roles, including the voices for Gwen and Krash.

This show is not for everyone; it has intense violence and gore, swearing and drug use. The animation has Dana Terrance’s style and looks somewhat like The Owl House, but it is clearly not for kids. I think Dana Terrance has proven that as an animator and a storyteller, she can produce compelling animated shows for kids and adults. If you are willing to try something that might look cartoony but has a deep and dark storyline, Knights of Guinevere might be for you. Episode 2 of Knights of Guinevere is streaming on the Glitch Productions YouTube channel.

The post KNIGHTS OF GUINEVERE: Ep 2 – “Wolves Around The Corner”: Episode Recap appeared first on Anime Superhero News.

In 2021, a Twitter user popularized the phrase surfing Dracula. The concept is that a show in the 90s would have had a surfing Dracula as the basic premise. In a modern revival, it would be an entire 8-episode season devoted to setting up surfboard Dracula, and we do not actually see him surf until the final five minutes of the series. This is an argument against the so-called prestige television that takes itself incredibly seriously, despite the silly premise. You’d think under the creative direction of James Gunn, the man who popularized characters like Rocket Raccoon and Groot, this era would be over, especially because the deconstructionist nature of the Snyderverse was a massive failure. And this rejection of the source material is a lose-lose for everyone because not only does it make the source material look less prestigious, but it also overlooks stuff from the source material that is actually prestigious.

Is this show taking the Surfing Dracula route? It is safe to point out the series is called Lanterns because calling it Green Lantern would just be a step too far. There is barely a hint at the other Lantern Corps, let alone one who is member of the Green Lantern corps who we only meet four of. I think there are people who are fans of the comic or animated depictions who are going to be in for a massive disappointment. I think this was mainly done because of the failure of the 2010 movie, but at the same time the movie resulted in an incredible cartoon. As an adaptation, it honestly could have been about just any franchise, as we have seen reflected in the many internet memes of editing the poster of John and Hal and claiming it’s another series. Despite being a meme, there is also a lot of truth to this; even the Sci-Fi aspects could be easily replaced by demons or magical creatures, and it’d barely make a difference. While the ring is used there, there are more Green Lantern constructs in the 90s Justice League pilot compared to the 9-episode series.

This lack of creative vision results in an uncreative story that moves at a snail’s pace and lacks overall coherence. I think it is fair for me to mainly look at the creative center of this series. Tom King played a creative role in this program; while his work in comics has a fair amount of critical acclaim, he needs to be kept on a creative leash. He is more substance than style or even coherent storytelling. He prioritizes talking about his themes of mostly trauma over anything, while sometimes its mixed in with good ideas a lot of terrible ones still come through.

I’d look to point out the first time Tom King wrote for Hal Jordan, he wrote an alternate reality where Booster Gold gets super excited by seeing Hal override his ring to kill himself. It doesn’t stop there, as he is also responsible for one of the worst DC events of all time, Heroes in Crisis. Despite all this, Tom King just keeps failing up. Even some of his worst clichés, such as repeating dialogue, shine through here, and it becomes more jarring the more bad comics from him you’ve read. It was meant to be a shocking moment when it’s revealed Hal Jordan’s dad committed suicide, but I’m so used to Tom King writing this cliché I just rolled my eyes.

The other creative voice is Damon Lindelof, who is coming off of working on the critically acclaimed Watchmen series. This decision is incredibly questionable since Watchmen was a deconstruction of the genre. We are still in the early phase of this new DC Universe and already prioritizing a deconstructionist look at the genre. In the end, the Guardians of the Universe come across as incredibly incompetent and stupid before they even get to do anything. I appreciate how it ended on the excuse of trying to make up for past mistakes, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are pretty useless at doing anything. I would still rather watch Watchmen again than this; it’s thematically coherent and character-wise far more likable. Trying to combine these two was a turn in the wrong direction. To give some credit, at least Lindoff is working off his previous work rather than taking anything from Allen Moore’s Green Lantern material, aside from his Mogo story getting referenced.

Another issue is no one in this show is likable. Hal’s likability relies entirely on Kyle Chander’s stellar performance. This doesn’t cover the fact that he’s super jaded and racist. It doesn’t help that his role as Green Lantern is barely elaborated on; we barely know any feats that made him worthy to begin with, aside from some childhood trauma. Meanwhile, you have John, who is just kind of boring. I strongly sense an almost incomplete lesson or character arc from him. John learns to go back to his family after bullying Guy into leaving the planet. John barely did anything to prove his moral superiority, let alone whether he is worthy. He barely even seems to know what he wants; the only thing I can imagine him using that ring for is to conjure an attractive grandma. Thanks to this low budget and constant monologues, I have no idea what he plans on doing.

As I said earlier, it’s a Tom King project, so it must tackle the themes of trauma. We have the Steward family, and they are depicted as completely crazy. You have the mother talking about racial discrimination, but we never actually see her as a victim or what motivated her to say that we’re just supposed to accept racism is bad from the mother who constantly points a shotgun at her son. It is supposed to tie in with the concept of generational trauma and the importance of being kind to the next generation of youth. This, however, goes straight in the trash can during the finale. We have John return to his abusive family under the guise of generational trauma somehow being a good thing that makes us stronger.

This is a terrible lesson, as it shirks the idea that people should be forgiven for terrible actions because we turn out to be good people on our own. It would be like my uncle locking me in a closet at the age of 5 to teach me a lesson about trauma, but because I turned out to be a good person, that somehow makes it okay and I should forgive them. It doesn’t help that John also writes an apology note with a bag full of money to the girl who had been blackmailing him, as if he was also rewarding her for her toxic behavior. I truly hated this subplot as well because we had no emotional attachment to the child until the midseason finale when her parents were already dead. I felt no sense of relatability to what she’s been through due to the lack of subtlety this show pulls off. In the end, it just felt like a bribe so John could stop feeling whatever guilt he may have had.

The biggest issue I have is that the show is simultaneously too subtle and not subtle enough. I found episode 3, which flashed back to John’s backstory, to be incredibly unnecessary. The impact of John reciting his childhood and the trauma made a lot more sense when he was just retelling it; we did not need the entire flashback episode because it ruined any sense of subtlety about John’s bland character. The overall themes of trauma are about as subtle as a frying pan to the face. I place the blame on writer Tom King, who constantly relies on this theme to make up for the fact that he is a genuinely terrible writer. One of the moments that really made me groan was how John was working as an architect for panic rooms.

The show is barely capable of showing off Jon’s guilt, but they really love showing off his trauma. And then we have the things we probably should have seen on screen. Such as Noah somehow freeing Sinestro from prison, Guy Gardner getting Hal’s ring back, or even a wider hint of the destruction caused by the Manhunters. Even the finale lets Sheriff Macon commit murder; she shot Hal because she just loved her son so much and doesn’t want to face repercussions for what she did. However, we barely see them interact. Noah also being a Manhunter was a massive afterthought, and it encourages us to commit any actions we want, such as murder and torture, as long as we feel bad about it. It also turns the show into copaganda since Sheriff Macon is yet another law enforcement official who faces no repercussions, so any argument about this show being progressive goes out the window.  It is even so vague they make it some strange personification of fear that it’s so subtle you don’t really understand what threat the Manhunters really pose.

So is this series worth checking out at all for anyone? I can say absolutely no. The series was too afraid to do anything interesting with its source material, while True Crime Fans may be confused by its convoluted plot and reliance on theme storytelling over a direct narrative. The only positive thing I can say is the dialogue making references to the lore, such as Mogo being at Hal’s Funeral. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre also work great off each other. I think if we see them again, the short clips of the two interacting will be worth looking back on in YouTube Shorts. I am going to give the benefit of the doubt and say John will probably be better written and have better interactions in Man of Tomorrow. Until then, I can say I’m looking forward to it, but the series sets a terrible precedent for the future of the DCU.

Toonami has released their latest schedule via the official Toonami Facebook page. October 24 is set to be the same show lineup as on October 17. October 31 will feature three Halloween marathons of six episodes of Get Jiro, four episodes of Housing Complex C, and finally four of the same Get Jiro episodes again. For Halloween, Toonami cuts into Family Guy and Rick and Morty by beginning at an early start time of 9:30 PM. A Rick and Morty: The Anime short, Rick and Morty vs. Genocider, will also air as time filler rolling into the bonus daylight savings time hour. Due to the earlier start time and bonus hour, Toonami will air for seven and a half hours, the longest block it has had since the Cartoon Network days of Full Cycle and the Naruto Hundo all day marathons.

At 9:30 PM, Get Jiro starts the block off at an unusually early hour two and a half hours before the usual midnight. This new series is an WB action cartoon from Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novel.

At 10:00 PM, Get Jiro airs a second episode, which was originally aired as part of an hour season premiere on October 3.

At 10:30 PM, Get Jiro airs the third episode, which originally premiered on October 10.

At 11:00 PM, Get Jiro will encore the October 17 fourth episode.

At 11:30 PM, Get Jiro episode 5 from October 24 gets an airing. After this, the rerun portion of the block comes to a temporary pause for a premiere.

At 12:00 AM, Get Jiro airs the only new episode of the night. This episode is in Japanese with English subtitles, unlike other episodes with English dialogue.

At 12:30 AM, Housing Complex C begins a Halloween marathon. This series was a Toonami original with only four episodes based around a haunted housing complex.

At 1:00 AM, Housing Complex C airs its second episode.

At 1:30 AM, Housing Complex C shows a third episode.

At 2:00 AM, Housing Complex C wraps up the mini marathon. Due to unusual runtimes, the marathon will last around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

At 2:45 AM, Rick and Morty vs. Genocider anime short airs, as it often does, to fill time due to the unusual runtimes of the Toonami original Housing Complex C.

At 2:00 AM, Get Jiro episode 3 airs. In non-Arizona states observing Daylight Savings Time, viewers will rewind their clocks an hour. This gives Toonami an extra hour to work with. A second Get Jiro marathon begins for the last two hours of the block.

At 2:30 AM, Get Jiro episode 4 makes another airing.

At 3:00 AM, Get Jiro episode 5 airs once more.

At 3:30 AM, Get Jiro closes out the block for the night with an encore of the new sixth episode from midnight. Like the midnight airing, this episode is in Japanese.

Are you looking forward to Toonami’s longest schedule in two decades, or will you be skipping the night due to the absence of Wind Breaker, Gachiakuta, and One Piece premieres? Leave a comment below!
