Upper Airway Respiratory Syndrome (UARS)

UARS is a sleep disorder characterized by airway resistance to breathing during sleep that affects people of all ages. Symptoms include daytime sleepiness, excessive fatigue and possibly cognitive impairment. UARS may eventually progress to obstructive sleep apnea if untreated. Obstructive sleep apnea is strongly correlated with a number of diseases, and may be considered the cause of many, including: high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, heart attack, pulmonary hypertension, type II diabetes, erectile dysfunction, depression, memory loss and numerous other health problems.

UARS and Mild Mid-facial Hypoplasia

UARS may be attributed to mid-facial hypoplasia. Mid-facial hypoplasia involves the underdevelopment of the upper jaw and cheek region of the face resulting in a short mid-face that is often considered an esthetic concern rather than a structural one yet many patients experience pain, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), allergies, snoring, sleep-related problems and breathing dysfunctions.
