According to Google, 97% of consumers search for local businesses online. As a local business, you want to be there when customers are looking for your product or service. Search results are increasingly moving away from links to websites to showing local businesses on a map format with customer reviews for that city (universal search results).

For example, there are 5 million results when you search for "restaurant Kelowna". The first page is predominantly covered with ads, reviews and a map depending on your industry. There is about 12,100 monthly searches on Google for "restaurant Kelowna" alone. That's a lot of people looking for a local place to eat but it is also a lot of pages competing for that top search result!

So what can you do to increase where your local business lands on the search engine results? Glad you asked...Here are some easy to implement and effective local search engine optimization tips for your small business:

1. Adding address and phone number to footer

The best way to let search engines like Google know where you "do" business is to tell them! Simply add your address and local phone number to the footer of your page. Google will now match your business with the address given. This is an easy and important first step. Here is an example of how we practice what we preach:

2. Claiming Your Google Places Page

Google relies heavily on it's own database of local listings to serve up its search results. To make sure you are in its database you need to verify your business on Google Places. If you haven't already claimed your listing, search for it first, chances are Google has already started to complete your profile. Fill it in as much info about your business as possible. Think about it. Google wants to send searchers to the best information available, they don't want to send searchers to a profile that isn't complete. Use your keywords for what you sell but don't stuff keywords so that real people reading it will be turned away.

3. Get Reviews

Depending on what industry you are in, reviews can be a major factor in determining where you land on search engines. 5 seems to be the magic number in Google reviews to get some positive search results. They don't necessarily all have to be good reviews as that would look suspicious to search engines but more reviews the better. In addition to showing reviews from Google Places/Maps, Google also links to reviews from third party sites. Having more reviews from multiple sites will increase your local search engine rankings. There are various ways to get reviews. My experience is that if you ask loyal customers and direct them to do so either through your website or physical location, you will get some. You should take the time and register your business at all the review sites you think are important to your industry. Add your profile and fill in as much information as you can similar to Google Places. These profiles will more than likely have a link to your website which will only help your search engine rankings.

4. Get Local Links

Link building is an essential piece of any good search engine optimization strategy. You are probably already a member of a bunch of local organizations in your community as a small business. Check the websites for these organizations. They may have directories or a supporters page. Write the website and see if you can get them to link to your website. These are usually very easy links to get and help a lot as links are a major component of any good SEO campaign.

5. Mobile

Mobile local information seekers are ready to take action. According to Google research shows 74% of US smartphone shoppers have made a purchase with the help of their smartphones. Test out where you business shows up on various mobile devices by using Google's Ad Preview tool and selecting a mobile device to preview on http://adwords.google.com/d/AdPreview/.
