The bustling networking event was a sea of strangers, loud music pulsating. As I awkwardly hovered in the corner, an influencer waved me over with a big smile. I flashed a weak grin and averted my gaze, anxiety rising in my throat. I just had to escape the overstimulation.

This feeling of visibility as an introvert draining my energy instead of energizing it was all too familiar. According to research by Jennifer Kahnweiler, 72% of introverts report feeling stressed and overstimulated by large networking events. Despite my ambitious career goals, the public eye often felt penetrating.

Like many introverts, I grappled with a dilemma: should I keep hiding in my quiet haven or put myself out there? Can introverts build an influential personal brand without adopting inauthentic extroverted self-promotion tactics?

Through deep self-reflection, I’ve learned we absolutely can – but we must redefine personal branding on our own terms, aligned with our unique personalities. When executed authentically, personal branding can feel not just comfortable for introverts, but uplifting.

Read on to discover how to leverage your introvert strengths to build a personal brand and impact that feels right. I’ll share how I reframed my mindset and developed strategies to find empowerment in introvert branding.

Why Over 91% of Introverts Avoid Personal Branding – And How to Overcome It

Many introverts shy away from personal branding because we falsely believe:

“It requires non-stop self-promotion.”

“I’m too shy and will get drowned out by extroverts.”

“I don’t have unique value to offer.”

But we introverts have immense strengths that lend themselves beautifully to personal branding when leveraged effectively:

Depth of Thought: Introverts tend to be deep, reflective thinkers able to develop unique perspectives and insights. These qualities are perfect for quality blogging, social commentary, and creative expression.

Focused Skill-Building: Introverts often have laser-like focus to go deeper into their professional skills and become specialists in their field. They can leverage this for branded thought leadership.

Meaningful 1:1 Connections: While large networking events may be draining, introverts tend to thrive in 1:1 relationship-building. This allows for meaningful engagement with those most aligned with their brand.

Written Communication: Introverts often excel at written communication. Blogs, articles, and books are natural ways for them to share ideas and build their brand.

Here are three compelling reasons introverts should consider developing a personal brand:

Standing Out: A strong personal brand helps introverts get noticed and highlight their skills confidently in a noisy world.

Enhancing Credibility: Personal branding shows introverts take their career seriously and have unique value to offer potential partners and clients.

Building Trust: A personal brand enables introverts to form meaningful connections and trust with ideal partners and clients.

So don’t let limiting beliefs hold you back any longer. Start recognizing that the world needs what you have to offer.

Reframing Your Mindset: From Self-Promotion to Self-Expression

I used to see personal branding as self-promotion – an egocentric pursuit at odds with my introspective tendency for inner focus. But over time, I reframed it as self-expression – simply expressing my authentic inner purpose and gifts outwardly through strategic messaging.

Additional mindset shifts that helped me fully embrace personal branding as an introvert include:

From Reach to Depth: Rather than striving for broad exposure everywhere, I shifted to going deep in just a few zones aligned with my innate genius. For example, I found LinkedIn to be a great platform for introverts to build meaningful connections.

From Depletion to Sustainability: I redesigned my brand messaging and activities to be fueled by aligned routines that energize me rather than running on fumes. In the early days I spent too much time on social media to the point I took a long break from it until finding my balance.

From Showmanship to Substance: I placed less emphasis on projecting a clever persona. Instead, I focused on sharing substantive ideas, values and insights that could benefit others. In fact, this was exactly how I got over my fear of public speaking – I stopped thinking about how I was being perceived and focused 100% on how I could help those listening to me speak. I took the focus off myself and put it completely on my audience.

In summary, as introverts we don’t have to ignore or change our thoughtful nature to build a personal brand. We simply express our authentic voice and gifts creatively.

Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt on Your Introvert Personal Branding Journey

As you start to build your personal brand, fear and self-doubt may arise. You may worry about criticism, imposter syndrome, or not having enough to offer.

Here are some ways to overcome the fears holding you back:

Name the fear. Simply acknowledging it lessens its power.

Remind yourself why you’re doing this. Connect to your core motivations.

Start small and pace yourself. Incremental steps feel less scary.

Celebrate all progress. Each step forward builds confidence.

Focus on helping not impressing. Keep the spotlight on your audience.

Reframe fear as excitement. The adrenaline you feel drives action.

Share vulnerabilities. Authenticity connects and inspires.

Believe in your voice. By boldly yet sensitively stepping forward, you empower others to do the same. Progress begins when you silence the inner critic.

Building Your Introvert Personal Brand: Actionable Best Practices

Now that we’ve covered key mindset shifts for embracing branding as an introvert, let’s explore some best practices for bringing your unique personal brand to life.

While each introvert’s path will look different, there are some core principles and actions that can help guide you in expressing your authentic voice:

Identify your niche. Spend time in self-reflection to gain clarity on your innate strengths, passions, values, and perspectives. What specific knowledge and experiences do you have to share? Become known as an expert in this niche area.

Build substance. Start a blog to share original insights and create free resources like eBooks, tutorials, and courses focused on your niche. Establish yourself as an authority by providing value.

Be unapologetically you. Never mimic others’ branding styles if they don’t feel authentic to who you are. Design your personal brand to be aligned with your unique lifestyle and personality.

Focus on quality over quantity of connections. Have meaningful 1:1 conversations to form bonds with those most aligned with your niche rather than chasing vanity metrics.

Manage your energy. Carefully limit activities that rapidly deplete you like excessive social media engagement. Pace yourself. Know when to say no. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Lead with your life purpose. Rather than starting with tactics, reflect deeply on your core mission in life. Why are you driven to share your gifts? How can branding help you manifest this purpose? Align your brand identity and activities around your soul-derived sense of purpose. When you lead with purpose, everything else will organically flow. Your voice will feel magnetic and authentic.

Enjoy the process. Make time for activities that spark joy, flow, and a sense of meaning for you. These will keep you energized, authentic and grounded in your purpose. Don’t just do what seems scalable or inauthentic. Introvert branding is a marathon, not a sprint – enjoy the journey.

Above all, remember there is no cookie cutter formula. Start small and stay true to yourself as your personal brand organically blossoms in alignment with your strengths.

Creating a Sustainable Introvert Personal Brand Routine

While consistency is certainly important when establishing a personal brand, rigidly forcing yourself into an excessive pace will quickly lead to frustration and burnout, trust me I know this from experience.

Being consistent is important for building a personal brand, but pushing yourself too hard can lead to stress and burnout. I’ve learned this the hard way.

As an introvert, I found my groove by intentionally designing a routine. This routine gives me enough time to be seen while also letting me recharge. Here’s how I do it:

I block quiet time weekly to create content when I have peak energy, concentration, and inspiration.

I plan and cadence social media sharing and blogging. The goal is quality sharing over spamming quantity. I am now a big believer that less is more!

I balance public-facing brand activities with private downtime such as reading, walking, journaling, or just quiet contemplation.

I delegate tasks in order to preserve my mental bandwidth for high focus brand-building activities.

I avoid projecting an artificial “always on” persona. It’s perfectly okay to sometimes step back from content creation and engagement.

I leverage scheduling tools to thoughtfully batch my social media content rather than constantly engaging in real-time.

The goal is to craft an introvert personal brand routine that feels intuitively sustainable, centered around your natural strengths versus forcing rigid habits. Motivation flows from inner alignment, not outer pressure.

Leading with Your Authentic Voice

As an introvert focused on depth over breadth, constantly “performing” an oversized extroverted persona while branding quickly leads to exhaustion.

The remedy that’s worked for me? Giving myself permission to lead with my authentic introverted voice versus conforming to expectations:

I openly share my introvert journey – my struggles, lessons learned, and growth. Vulnerability builds connection.

I prioritize writing over on-camera activities to creatively express myself since writing is my natural communication strength.

I infuse my brand voice with my quirks, values and interests rather than force-fitting it into a template personality.

I only share ideas that authentically resonate with me rather than chasing trends or gimmicks. My content must feel meaningful to me first.

I give myself grace to evolve my voice over time rather than pressure to maintain a fake, consistent persona. My voice is a living expression.

By boldly yet authentically spotlighting your inner world, you give others permission to do the same. Your personal brand should feel like a soul-nourishing exercise versus another performance.

Quiet Changemakers: Introverts Who Have Made a Lasting Impact

History is full of changemakers who were introverts, and their impact is profound. Notable figures like Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Mahatma Gandhi show us that you don’t have to be loud to be heard.

In her ground-breaking book, “Quiet,” Susan Cain points out that these individuals changed the world not by being showy, but by being steadfast in their beliefs. They didn’t seek the spotlight; the spotlight found them because their messages were too compelling to ignore.

The Subtle Power of Introverts

As introverts, our influence often comes in quieter forms. We may not be the loudest voice in the room, but we can still be the most impactful. Through thoughtful conversations, insightful writing, expressive art, and introspective reflection, we plant seeds of change. These seeds may not sprout overnight, but given time, they can grow into powerful movements.

The Ripple Effect

Our actions and ideas don’t just stop with us; they spread outward, like ripples in a pond. Take Rosa Parks for example. Her simple yet daring act of refusing to give up her seat on a bus wasn’t just a moment; it was a catalyst. It triggered a ripple effect that eventually led to a wave of social change.

Trust Your Unique Gifts

The key lesson here is to trust in your own unique gifts and strengths. You don’t have to shout to make your voice heard. Sometimes, a whisper can be just as powerful if it comes from a place of deep conviction. Your quiet courage, combined with the right timing, can indeed spark massive change.

So, embrace your introverted qualities. Remember that change doesn’t always come from a shout; often, it comes from a whisper that couldn’t be ignored.

Owning Your Path as an Introvert Ready to Share Your Voice

Here are my final tips for introverts considering getting creative and sharing your voice with the world through personal branding:

1. Recognize imposter syndrome and self-doubt for what they are – distorted lenses obscuring the immense value you offer. Who you authentically are is enough.

2. Align your brand messaging and activities with your natural strengths and interests.

3.Progress at a pace that feels intuitively sustainable for your energy levels rather than comparing yourself to others. Listen to your needs.
4. Remember the world needs your special perspective – your insight, nuance, and thoughtfulness provide balance.

5.Start small and give yourself grace. Growth is not linear. Some days your personal brand will feel energizing, other days you’ll need to rest and reset.

I hope my introvert personal branding journey inspires you to confidently nurture and creatively share your gifts with the world through whichever mediums feel most authentic and life-giving to you.

Trust that your influential power rests in the depth and quality of how you share your voice – not noise level. You have quiet gifts to offer that can shift perspectives and open minds.

Ready to start safely stepping outside your comfort zone to bring more of your introvert brand to light? I encourage you to begin with one small action today.

In closing, believe in your inner light. Nurture it gently, let it grow brighter in its own time, and don’t be afraid to build an introvert personal brand. Your contributions matter. Your voice matters. You matter.

Are you tired of sending out generic messages on LinkedIn that never get any responses? You’re not alone. Many people struggle to make meaningful connections on the platform, and it’s no surprise why. With almost a billion LinkedIn users, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd.

That’s where ChatGPT comes in. This article will show you how to use ChatGPT for LinkedIn messages that are tailored to each individual recipient. Say goodbye to spammy outreach that gets ignored and hello to thoughtful, engaging messages that build real relationships.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI that uses artificial intelligence to generate human-like responses to natural language prompts. ChatGPT is designed to carry out human-like conversations with users by responding to their messages or prompts.

ChatGPT can carry out human-like conversations with users, making it a useful tool for creating personalized responses to customer inquiries, assisting with lead generation, and answering frequently asked questions. Business owners, professional service providers and salespeople can leverage ChatGPT to improve the customer experience, build customer loyalty, and increase sales.

Why Personalized Messaging is Important on LinkedIn

Personalized messaging is essential on LinkedIn because it helps you stand out from the crowd. When you send a generic message, it’s easy for the recipient to see that you’ve sent the same message to hundreds of other people. This makes it less likely that they’ll respond. However, when you take the time to craft a personalized message, you show the recipient that you’ve done your research and that you’re genuinely interested in connecting with them.

Personalized messaging can also help you build stronger relationships with your connections. When you send a message that’s tailored to the recipient’s interests and needs, you’re more likely to start a conversation that will lead to a deeper connection. This can be especially beneficial if you’re looking to build your network or land a job on LinkedIn.

Finally, personalized messaging can help you save time. When you send a generic message, you’re more likely to get ignored, which means you’ll have to send more messages to get the same results. However, when you send a personalized message, you’re more likely to get a response, which means you can spend less time sending messages overall.

Setting Up ChatGPT for LinkedIn

Discover the transformative potential of ChatGPT for LinkedIn, the ultimate tool for elevating your professional networking experience. With just a few simple steps, you can unlock the full potential of personalized messaging to engage your connections like never before.

First, familiarize yourself with the user-friendly ChatGPT platform by creating an account. In no time, you’ll be ready to harness the power of tailor-made messages that resonate with your audience.

But don’t just dive in headfirst. Take a strategic approach by conducting thorough research on your recipients to ensure your messages hit the mark. Utilize LinkedIn’s powerful search capabilities to identify your ideal target audience and delve into their profiles to uncover valuable insights about their interests, role, company, and needs.

With this knowledge, you can confidently use ChatGPT to create compelling messages.

Create Personalized Messages on LinkedIn Using ChatGPT

It may sound funny to use artificial intelligence to create personalized messages on LinkedIn using ChatGPT. It may seem ironic, however, sometimes, as humans, we get blocked on what to say or write to an ideal prospect. Fortunately, AI doesn’t experience the same issues, so crafting personalized messages with ChatGPT is incredibly easy.

When using ChatGPT to craft your LinkedIn messages, it’s important to keep your recipient’s interests and needs in mind. Let me cover some essential steps to leverage ChatGPT for LinkedIn messages.

Step 1: Research your prospects: Before crafting a personalized message, gather information about your prospects using LinkedIn’s search function. Look at their profiles to understand their interests, needs, and professional background. This research will help you create messages that resonate with each individual.

Step 2: Decide what you want your message to convey: You need to provide ChatGPT with instructions, these are called “Prompts” based on your objective for reaching out to the prospect. For instance, you may want to create a message to introduce yourself in a friendly and engaging manner. In other messages, you may want to strike up a conversation by asking a question. Or you may want to provide value by sharing something that would be helpful to that person’s role or business. You need to start with the goal of what you want your message to convey.

Step 3: Input prospect-specific information into ChatGPT: To make your message truly personalized, provide ChatGPT with information about the prospect, such as their job title, industry, recent accomplishments, or something you share in common. This will help the AI generate a message tailored to the individual.

Step 4: Review and customize the generated message: After ChatGPT generates a message based on your prompt and prospect-specific information, review it and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it accurately reflects your intentions and aligns with your prospect’s interests.

Step 5: Add a personal touch: To make the message even more personalized, mention a commonality, a shared interest, or a recent update from the prospect’s LinkedIn profile. This will demonstrate that you have taken the time to understand their background and are genuinely interested in connecting with them.

Step 6: Test and optimize: Monitor the response rates and engagement levels of your messages. If certain messages are more successful than others, use that information to refine your prompts and personalization strategies to continuously improve your outreach efforts.

By following these steps and using ChatGPT for LinkedIn, you can create personalized, engaging messages for your prospects on LinkedIn, increasing your chances of forming meaningful connections and achieving your networking objectives.

Best Practices to Use ChatGPT for LinkedIn Messages

Crafting compelling and engaging messages is essential for building valuable relationships. This section focuses on seven best practices that will help you harness the potential of ChatGPT for LinkedIn messaging.

Know your recipient: The more you understand the person you want to message, the better your prompts will be when asking ChatGPT to create LinkedIn messages. Be specific in your prompts to achieve optimal results.

Analyze effective messages: Examine messages you’ve received and responded to and use them as examples for ChatGPT. Pay attention to the types of messages that elicit responses from your recipients.

Learn from ignored messages: Identify messages that have been disregarded and use this information to refine your approach.

Generate relevant content: Utilize ChatGPT to create content that your prospects would find engaging and incorporate it into your messages.

Engage with comments: Use ChatGPT to craft ideas for commenting on people’s content, then leverage those comments to initiate one-to-one messaging.

Focus on a single objective: Ensure that each message targets only one objective, such as connecting, striking up a conversation, providing value, or transitioning to an offline conversation. Be clear about what you want to achieve with each message.

Implement a call-to-action: Include a clear call-to-action in your messages, guiding recipients on their next steps.

By following these best practices, you can maximize the effectiveness of ChatGPT for LinkedIn messages and enhance your professional communication with prospects.

Integrating ChatGPT with LinkedIn Messages

Integrating ChatGPT with LinkedIn messages can significantly benefit business owners, professional service providers, and sales professionals. ChatGPT can help improve customer engagement by using pre-written responses to common customer inquiries, allowing you to focus on more high-value tasks.

Additionally, ChatGPT can provide suggestions and text based on what it finds online, allowing you to expedite your writing of LinkedIn messages, emails, or any other customer communication.

One of the key considerations when integrating ChatGPT with LinkedIn messages is to ensure that it still requires a human touch.

ChatGPT can provide suggestions and pre-written responses, but it should not be used to fully automate messaging processes. Instead, you should use ChatGPT as a tool to streamline your messaging processes and improve your response rates and engagement with leads and customers.

Leveraging ChatGPT for your LinkedIn messages can significantly enhance relationship building and sales. However, it is important to remember that ChatGPT still requires a human touch and is not used to fully automate messaging processes.

Conclusion

With ChatGPT, you can revolutionize your LinkedIn game by crafting messages that are tailored to each individual recipient. Say goodbye to generic, spammy messages that get ignored, and hello to thoughtful, engaging outreach that builds real relationships.

Take your LinkedIn game to the next level using ChatGPT for LinkedIn messages!

Quality over quantity and professionalism over “viral” reigns again with LinkedIn’s algorithm changes. The world’s largest business network is trying to regain the professional nature of the platform that it was always known for until recent years, and all I can say is that it can’t come soon enough!

Social media has become crucial for many businesses and professionals in today’s digitally driven world. LinkedIn has carved a unique niche among these platforms as a professional networking site. But, like all social media platforms, understanding LinkedIn’s algorithm is crucial for maximizing your reach and engagement. Considering recent changes, the focus has shifted to emphasize knowledge and advice.

LinkedIn’s Algorithm: The Driving Force Behind Your Feed

LinkedIn’s algorithm, the unseen force that decides what content you see and don’t see on your feed, has undergone significant changes recently. LinkedIn wants a different approach, unlike other platforms where viral content reigns supreme.

According to Dan Roth, LinkedIn’s editor-in-chief, the platform isn’t interested in promoting viral content. Instead, it celebrates content that is informative, relevant, and grounded in knowledge.

I don’t know about you, but this is good news for me. I thought we lost LinkedIn to the dark side of Facebook’ish-ness. Yes, I like to make up words.

It wasn’t only me who was fed up with selfies.

Understanding the Motivation Behind LinkedIn’s Algorithm Changes

LinkedIn’s activity has grown exponentially in recent years, with a 42% increase in content shared and a 27% increase in content viewed between 2021 and 2023.

Additionally, it records three professionals joining every second. During the pandemic, LinkedIn saw a trend of users sharing more personal content, often mimicking the type of posts seen on Facebook.

However, this led to complaints from users who wanted their feeds to be more professionally relevant and informative. Thus, LinkedIn decided to revamp its algorithm to make the content more fitting to its users’ professional needs.

LinkedIn’s Algorithm Changes: Major Changes Focusing on Relevance

The LinkedIn algorithm changes have led to two primary alterations in the way content is distributed on the platform:

1. More Visibility for Your Followers

LinkedIn now prioritizes showing your posts to your followers. The rationale behind this is simple: users find content most valuable from people they know and respect, hence the algorithm change. Since this update, LinkedIn has noted a 10% increase in people viewing posts from individuals they follow.

2. Prioritizing Informative Content

The second big change in LinkedIn’s algorithm is prioritizing posts that provide “knowledge and advice.” LinkedIn now evaluates the informational value of a post and then shares it with users who might find it useful.

This change has led to a nearly 40% increase in people viewing informative content from individuals outside their network.

This reorientation now means LinkedIn’s algorithm evaluates whether a post provides valuable insights and then showcases it to other users who may find the information applicable and beneficial.

How LinkedIn’s Algorithm Distinguishes ‘Knowledge and Advice’

The challenge for LinkedIn’s algorithm is determining which posts contain genuine knowledge and advice. According to Roth, LinkedIn wants its users to build a community around content they are uniquely qualified to discuss. LinkedIn identifies ‘knowledge and advice’ through several metrics:

1. Relevance to a Specific Audience

Every post is evaluated for its relevance to a specific audience. LinkedIn’s algorithm discerns who might find a post relevant, ensuring the content reaches the right audience.

For instance, a post about B2B marketing will be shared with individuals in that community. The key for creators is sharing knowledge to help their target audience.

2. Expertise of the Author

LinkedIn also evaluates the author’s authority and expertise on the topic they’re posting about. The author’s credibility is a crucial determinant in evaluating the post’s value.

LinkedIn’s algorithm will recognize this and limit the reach of your post if you’re posting about a topic you have no background in.

3. Quality of Comments

Unlike other platforms that reward posts with a high number of comments, LinkedIn now focuses on meaningful engagement based on the quality of the comments. So, posts with meaningful comments that contribute to a discussion are more likely to be promoted by the algorithm.

4. Unique Perspective

LinkedIn’s algorithm also considers whether a post provides a unique perspective or insight rather than generic information. Posts that offer personal insights or opinions are more likely to be promoted.

Redefining Success: LinkedIn’s Vision

LinkedIn’s perspective on ‘success’ has undergone a notable transformation. In this new paradigm, accumulating likes and followers is not the primary aim. Instead, LinkedIn encourages its users to focus on reaching the right audience with their content, reinforcing the shift towards quality over quantity.

This will not stop users from aspiring to gain many likes and followers on LinkedIn, but they are less likely to see results from it. LinkedIn’s algorithm is going to stop rewarding viral content. The platform views itself as a digital workplace where no single piece of content should be relevant to everyone. So, if you’re looking to succeed on LinkedIn, focus on creating quality content that is relevant and valuable to your target audience.

For more reading on these recent changes to LinkedIn’s algorithm, Jason Feifer from Entrepreneur did a fantastic interview with Dan Roth and Alice Xiong from LinkedIn here: LinkedIn Changed Its Algorithm – Here’s How Your Posts Will Get More Attention Now.

LinkedIn Algorithm Changes: What’s No Longer Working

For many professionals, LinkedIn serves as an essential tool for networking, business development, job hunting, and staying informed about industry trends. Like any other social media platform, LinkedIn uses an algorithm to determine which posts appear in a user’s feed. Understanding this algorithm can be crucial in boosting your visibility and engagement on the platform.

As already mentioned, LinkedIn’s algorithm now prioritizes content based on a variety of factors, including relevance to the user and the degree of engagement a post receives. It also considers the relationship between the user and the person or page posting the content. With all these elements at play, gaining traction on LinkedIn can feel like a formidable task.

Savvy LinkedIn users have, in the past (and I’m sure they will again), found ways to increase their visibility and engagement on LinkedIn by gaming the system. It looks like many of these ways will stop being effective with the most recent changes; at least, that’s what I hope.

Here’s what is likely to stop working:

LinkedIn Engagement Pods: An end to gaming the algorithm?

One such method that has gained attention in recent years was the use of LinkedIn engagement pods.

LinkedIn engagement pods are informal groups of LinkedIn users who have agreed to interact with each other’s posts to boost engagement levels. The members of these pods often like, comment on, and share each other’s content, thereby increasing visibility and engagement.

The idea behind engagement pods was simple: by creating a network of active engagement, members can trick the LinkedIn algorithm into thinking their content is highly popular and relevant, thus increasing its visibility. But while the concept may seem ingenious at first glance, it also raises questions about the authenticity of engagement and the ethics of manipulating the algorithm.

Based on LinkedIn’s changes in defining “knowledge and advice” through meaningful engagement that generate substantive comments I suspect this method will stop working.

Will LinkedIn carousel posts lose popularity?

LinkedIn carousel posts have been another trend that has been gaining momentum. Carousel posts allow users to share multiple images or slides within a single post, providing a dynamic and interactive way to share content.

This format can be particularly effective for sharing information in a visually engaging manner. From showcasing a portfolio of work to sharing a step-by-step guide or infographic, carousel posts offer versatility and creativity. As a result, they tend to generate high levels of engagement.

However, like any tool, carousel posts can be misused. Some users may overuse this format, leading to a saturation of carousel posts in the feed. This could potentially irritate users and lead to a decrease in overall engagement.

As a result, LinkedIn has decided to remove carousel posts where you share multiple images in a single post to crack down on the overuse of carousels.

However, users can still create LinkedIn carousels using the PDF document feature, which shows each page as an individual, scrollable frame.

I’m sure you noticed carousel posts filling your newsfeed, just like polls did last year. Whatever LinkedIn promotes in its algorithm gets overused and essentially abused until users get sick of it and LinkedIn makes a change.

It will be interesting to see if this begins to die down now.

Goodbye to selfies on LinkedIn?

Goodbye, Facebook’ish posts (selfies). I remember cringing when I thought LinkedIn was turning into Facebook or Instagram, I spoke out about how I felt that would ultimately turn users off the platform. But I understood LinkedIn trying to capitalize on the disillusionment of Facebook after the Cambridge Analytica scandal and trying to attract a younger demographic. I still thought it was a mistake; they’ve finally realized that too.

Posting selfies on LinkedIn became a contentious topic. Proponents argued that it humanizes professionals, making them more relatable and approachable. Critics argued that it’s unprofessional and reduces the platform’s credibility.

It’s undeniable that selfies can generate significant engagement. They often receive many likes and comments, which can boost the visibility of the post and the person posting it. But, like engagement pods and carousel posts, the use of selfies raises questions about the authenticity of engagement and the platform’s integrity. And thankfully, it looks like LinkedIn’s algorithm changes will take care of this problem.

LinkedIn turning into Facebook – no more?

With the rise of pictures and selfies and the constant striving for “viral” content, LinkedIn users started questioning whether LinkedIn was turning into Facebook. Once strictly professional, the platform seemed increasingly populated with more casual, personal content.

While this shift had its critics, it also had its supporters.

Regardless of where you stand on this debate, it’s clear that the landscape of LinkedIn is changing. As users, it’s crucial to adapt to these changes while maintaining a professional and authentic online presence.

9 Ways to Gain Visibility Without Trying to Game LinkedIn’s Algorithm

LinkedIn’s recent shift in its algorithm emphasizes quality over quantity and presents an excellent opportunity for users to create impactful and engaging content. Here are nine actionable strategies to leverage LinkedIn’s algorithm changes and deliver meaningful content that appeals to the right audience.

Understand your audience: Consider your ideal audience before posting. The LinkedIn algorithm prioritizes content that resonates with a specific audience. Tailor your content to address your connections and followers’ needs, questions, or interests.

Share expert knowledge: LinkedIn values content that offers valuable insights and advice. Tap into your industry expertise and share insights that you can provide as a professional in your field. This will help you to establish more authority and gain visibility on the posts you share on LinkedIn.

Stay in your lane: LinkedIn now assesses whether the authors of posts are authorities on the subjects they’ve posted about. Consistently post about topics within your industry or areas of expertise to build credibility and increase the chances of your content being showcased.

Encourage meaningful engagement: The new algorithm values “meaningful comments.” Ask open-ended questions, initiate thought-provoking discussions, or share contrarian industry opinions. Such tactics can encourage substantive responses from your audience.

Be consistent: Regular posting increases the likelihood that your followers will see your content. It also signals to LinkedIn’s algorithm that you’re an active user. Strive for a consistent posting schedule that keeps your content visible and engaging.

Incorporate personal insights: The more personalized and insightful the content, the higher the chance of gaining traction. LinkedIn’s algorithm appreciates content that goes beyond generic information to include the writer’s unique perspectives and insights.

Respond to comments: Engage with individuals who comment on your posts. It not only encourages further interaction but is also viewed favorably by LinkedIn’s algorithm, enhancing the visibility of your post.

Leverage different content types: LinkedIn allows users to post text, images, videos, and documents. Experiment with different types of content to see what resonates most with your audience and achieves the highest engagement.

Keep virality in check: While reaching a broad audience can be tempting, LinkedIn will no longer be rewarding virality. Aim for targeted reach instead of vast exposure. Valuable, insightful content that resonates with the right people is more likely to drive meaningful engagement and foster valuable connections.

LinkedIn’s algorithm changes present an opportunity for users to build genuine, meaningful connections and engage more authentically with their network. By implementing these strategies, you can navigate the algorithm changes and make the most of your LinkedIn experience.

Wrapping Up LinkedIn’s Algorithm Changes

LinkedIn’s algorithm changes reflect a shift in the platform’s focus from popularity to relevance and quality. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a novice on the platform, understanding how the LinkedIn algorithm works can help you optimize your content for better reach and engagement. Remember, on LinkedIn, it’s not about reaching the most people – it’s about reaching the right people.

Social selling has emerged as an effective strategy for B2B salespeople to connect with potential clients and build relationships with them over time. John, a B2B salesperson facing the challenge of cold calling, was able to transform himself into a high-performing salesperson through social selling on LinkedIn. In this article, we explore John’s journey and the tactics and strategies he used for successful social selling.

John worked for a tech company that offered a variety of services to other businesses, but his job was to sell the company’s software solutions. John was good at his job, but he often found himself struggling to make the number of cold calls required of him each day to keep his pipeline full. He knew there had to be a better way to connect with potential clients, but he wasn’t sure what that was.

How John Discovered Social Selling on LinkedIn

John’s journey began when he realized that he needed to change his approach to sales if he wants to be more successful. He was tired of feeling like he was banging his head against a wall with cold calling, and he was ready to try something new. John started to research different sales techniques and strategies to find something that will work better for him.

John’s First Steps into the World of Social Selling

John’s mentor introduced him to social selling on LinkedIn, which can be used to connect with potential clients and build relationships with them over time. John is intrigued by this new approach and decides to learn more about it.

Tests, Allies, and Enemies: Overcoming Obstacles and Building Relationships

Next, John faces his first challenge, which is to figure out how to use LinkedIn effectively for social selling. He spends hours reading articles and watching videos to learn how to optimize his LinkedIn profile and use it to find potential clients. He starts to connect with people in his industry and engages with them by commenting on their posts and sharing relevant content.

As John becomes more skilled at social selling, he starts to see results. He gets more profile views and connection requests, and he starts to receive messages from potential clients who are interested in learning more about his company’s services. John is excited to see that his hard work is paying off and that he’s finally making progress in his sales efforts.

John’s next challenge comes when he faces resistance from some of his colleagues who are skeptical of social selling. They think it’s a waste of time and that cold calling is the only way to get results. John has to defend his approach and explain why social selling is a valuable tool for building relationships with potential clients. He starts to share his successes with his colleagues and uses data to back up his claims. Eventually, some of his colleagues start to come around and try social selling for themselves.

As John continues on his journey, he faces another challenge when he struggles to convert his social selling efforts into booked appointments and sales. He realizes that he needs to be more strategic in his approach and start targeting specific industries and companies that would be a good fit for his company’s services. John starts to research his target companies and learn more about their needs and pain points. LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional networking site, is the ideal platform for social selling. LinkedIn has almost a billion members in more than 200 countries and territories, making it a powerful tool for sales professionals and business owners looking to increase their reach.

One of the main benefits of social selling on LinkedIn is the ability to leverage your existing network and build new connections. Using LinkedIn to connect with prospects and build relationships, you can position yourself as a trusted advisor and thought leader in your industry. In turn, this can help you close more deals, as prospects are more likely to buy from someone they trust and view as an expert in their field.

Another benefit of social selling on LinkedIn is the ability to personalize your approach. Unlike cold calling or email marketing, social selling allows you to tailor your message to individual prospects and engage with them on a more personal level. By taking the time to research your prospects and understand their needs and pain points, you can create a more effective sales pitch that is more likely to resonate with them.

Additional Reading: 7 Essential Social Selling Best Practices for Sales Teams

Section 2: How to Build a Strong Personal Brand on LinkedIn

One of the keys to successful social selling on LinkedIn is building a strong personal brand. Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the world, and it can have a significant impact on how prospects perceive you and whether they choose to do business with you.

To build a strong personal brand on LinkedIn, start by optimizing your profile. Make sure your profile photo is professional, and use a header image that showcases your brand or personality. Your headline should create interest and curiosity in what you do and the value you offer to your clients.

In your profile summary (About section), use persuasive language and compelling evidence to showcase your expertise and value. Include information about your experience, skills, and accomplishments, and use keywords that will help prospects find you when they search for relevant terms.

Another critical aspect of building a strong personal brand on LinkedIn is creating compelling content that showcases your expertise and value. Consider creating blog posts, videos, and sharing posts that demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in your field. By sharing this content on LinkedIn, you can attract prospects and position yourself as an authority on your topic.

Additional Reading: Transform Your LinkedIn Profile Into a Client-Attracting Landing Page

Section 3: How to Use LinkedIn for Prospecting and Lead Generation

Once you’ve built a strong personal brand on LinkedIn, the next step is to use the platform for prospecting and lead generation. The key to successful prospecting on LinkedIn is to be targeted and strategic in your approach.

Start by researching your ideal prospects and creating a list of individuals or companies that fit your target audience. Use LinkedIn’s advanced search features to find prospects based on criteria such as industry, job title, and location. Once you’ve identified potential prospects, send them a personalized connection request with a brief message personalized to them and about them. Do not talk about yourself, your business, or products/services. Your only goal with the connection request is to get them to accept it.

Once you’ve connected with a prospect, it’s crucial to engage with them in a meaningful way. Share content relevant to their interests, and comment on or like their posts to show that you’re paying attention to their activity on the platform. When the time is right, reach out with a personalized message to start a conversation.

Additional Reading: 3 Massive Mistakes Sales People Make With Social Media

Section 4: How to Use LinkedIn for Sales and Account Management

LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for sales and account management professionals looking to connect with prospects and build stronger relationships with clients.

If I only had a dollar for every time someone asked me, “Melonie, which LinkedIn membership level is right for my business?”

A free subscription, LinkedIn Premium, or Sales Navigator? Which one will best serve your needs and help you achieve your business goals, whether that be professional networking or lead generation?

The truth is it depends…

…because every business’s needs and preferences are different.

To help you decide, I’ve created a comprehensive comparison guide that describes the features, tools, and benefits of each LinkedIn membership level.

Free LinkedIn subscription

Despite its clear limitations, there’s a lot to like about LinkedIn’s free membership level. With the free LinkedIn membership, you can:

Build your professional brand

Build and maintain a large trusted professional network

Find and reconnect with colleagues and classmates

Request and provide recommendations

Search for and view profiles of other LinkedIn members

Send and receive messages from 1st-degree connections and InMails

However, many features once available in the free membership are now gone. That means it’s a little trickier to get around the lost functionality and avoid going over the monthly commercial use limit when you do your searches.

Many people using LinkedIn for lead generation often choose to upgrade from the free version to a paid LinkedIn subscription for the following reasons:

They feel they’re missing out on opportunities

They’d like to accomplish more in less time

They’re not tapping into the full potential of LinkedIn for their business

However, even with the limitations of the free membership, LinkedIn is still the best place for most professionals, B2B businesses and salespeople to (a) find and connect with their ideal clients, (b) post content, and (c) engage in numerous ways with their connections.

The very premise of LinkedIn is that it’s an active social platform for businesses. Its membership is now almost one billion members worldwide.

The power of the platform is that even with the free membership you can quickly and easily find and connect with professionals and businesspeople all over the world.

<img decoding="async" class="tve_image data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://topdogsocialmedia.com/linkedin-lead-generation/" rel="noopener" target="_blank" class="" style="outline: none;">lead generation on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn Premium Business Subscription

If you feel limited by your free LinkedIn account, you might want to consider LinkedIn Premium Business.

Here is a list of tools and features you can access with your LinkedIn Premium Business subscription to help you decide if it is right for you:

<img decoding="async" class="tve_image wp-image-45276 tcb-moved-image" alt="LinkedIn Premium Business" data-id="45276" width="677" data-init-width="1182" height="274" data-init-height="479" title="LinkedIn-Premium-Business-Features" loading="lazy" src="https://topdogsocialmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/LinkedIn-Premium-Business-Features.png" data-width="677" thrv_text_element">
InMail

If you want to send a message to someone you’re not connected to (and with whom you don’t share a group), you must send them an InMail.

InMails can be useful when you want to reach out to a potential prospect before you send them a connection request or if they haven’t accepted your connection request.

This is only possible with a premium subscription. You’re given a certain number of InMails every month based on your subscription level, with an opportunity to purchase more.

Unlimited Search

With unlimited people browsing, you don’t have to worry about the commercial use limits put on free accounts.

This means you won’t lose access to search results partway through the month, which would negatively affect your lead generation searches.

Activities that LinkedIn counts towards the commercial use limits include:

Searching for LinkedIn profiles on LinkedIn.com and the mobile app

Browsing LinkedIn profiles using the “People Also Viewed” section located on the right rail of a profile

The following activities don’t count toward the limit:

Searching profiles by name using the search box located at the top of every page on LinkedIn.com

Browsing your 1st-degree connections from the Connections page

Searching for jobs on the Jobs page

Who’s Viewed My Profile

This feature is one of LinkedIn’s most popular, because it reveals the types of people and companies your profile and skillset is attracting, often uncovering high-quality potential leads.

This section lists all the people who have viewed your profile (you can see only the last five people with a free account).

LinkedIn provides you with some additional filters in the “Who’s viewed your profile” section, including:

Company (see if there is a trend of people from specific companies viewing your profile)

Industry (discover what industries your viewers are in)

Location (see the most common geographic locations of your viewers)

And if you click on “All filters” you will also be able to see:

Date range (past 14 days, 28 days, 90 days, 365 days)

Interesting viewers

Note: LinkedIn defines “Interesting viewers” in its analytics as notable profile viewers, such as senior leaders in your industry, recruiters, and other individuals who can further your career. Turning on the “Interesting viewers” feature in LinkedIn’s analytics will show you these notable profile viewers.

The Limitations of a LinkedIn Premium Subscription

While the LinkedIn Premium subscription offers additional features beyond the free account, this membership has limitations for people who are looking to use LinkedIn for lead generation.

One benefit LinkedIn claims for a Premium Business membership is the InMail credits provided. While InMail allows you to send messages to LinkedIn users who aren’t in your network, we find that InMails are often perceived as promotional or spammy. They appear differently in a user’s LinkedIn inbox, making them less likely to be opened and engaged with compared to standard messages. Therefore, even though they’re part of the Premium plan, we typically don’t recommend using InMails as a primary form of outreach.

Another potential drawback of the LinkedIn Premium Business subscription for people wanting to focus on lead generation is the lack of advanced search and targeting filters. These are often crucial tools to locate, segment, and prioritize leads based on a variety of factors such as job function, seniority, or company size.

Additional Reading: Decoding the Latest LinkedIn Algorithm Changes

LinkedIn Sales Navigator

If your goal on LinkedIn is to generate leads and sales, then Sales Navigator will likely be the subscription best suited to meet your needs. Unlike the free and Premium subscriptions, Sales Navigator is explicitly designed for sales, and includes a comprehensive set of features that assist in lead generation and prospecting.

In comparison to the other subscriptions, Sales Navigator stands out for its advanced search capabilities. These allow you to accurately identify and target your ideal clients based on a variety of criteria that go way beyond just job function, seniority, company size, and geographic location.

Another unique feature of Sales Navigator is the ability to save and track leads and accounts. With this, you can monitor the activity of potential leads and companies, allowing you to reach out at the optimal moment or stay up to date with any significant changes.

It’s important to note that Sales Navigator has three versions: Core, Advanced, and Advanced Plus. These are respectively tailored to individual users, teams, and enterprise users. The features and tools available vary between these versions, so it’s essential to review and select the one that best aligns with your needs and objectives.

SALES NAVIGATOR FEATURES AND PLANS

CORE

ADVANCED

ADVANCED PLUS

Access to LinkedIn subscriptions
Job seeker, LinkedIn Learning access

✓

Extended network access
Unlimited search, Saved searches, Who’s viewed your profile in the past 90 days

✓

✓

✓

Reach out
InMail

✓

✓

✓

Find the right people
Advanced search, sales spotlights

✓

✓

✓

Prioritize and qualify
Lead and account recommendations, sales preferences

✓

✓

✓

Integrate with your sales tools
SNAP, Outlook web integration, Sales Navigator mobile app (SNAP for Advanced and Advanced Plus only)

✓

✓

✓

Keep track of people and companies
Saved leads/accounts, Custom lists, Alerts, Notes (Buyer Interest alerts for Advanced and Advanced Plus only)

✓

✓

✓

Engage with your prospects and customers using your team’s network
TeamLink, TeamLink Extend

✓

✓

Advanced outreach—package content and track engagement
Smart Links

✓

✓

Administrative tools/reporting
Usage Reporting, Account Center

✓

✓

Centralized billing for contracts sold through LinkedIn corporate sales
Volume and multi-year discounts, invoicing, dedicated relationship manager

✓

✓

Enterprise tools
SSO, Employee Data Integration

✓

✓

CRM Sync
Auto-Save, Activity Writeback, & ROI Reporting for Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sales

✓

Advanced CRM integrations
Data Validation & Contact Creation for Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics 365

✓

Let me share just some of what makes Sales Navigator powerful for finding, connecting, and staying engaged with your ideal customers.

Sales Navigator Advanced Search

Sales Navigator Advanced Search provides additional filters for finding leads and accounts. The search filters are divided into two categories: People Search Filters (Leads) and Company Search Filters (Accounts).

The Sales Navigator Advanced Search filters include:

Company

Company headcount

Current company

Past company

Company type

Company headquarters

Role

Current job title

Past job title

Function

Seniority level

Years in current company

Years in current position

Spotlights

Changed jobs in last 90 days

Mentioned in news in last 30 days

Posted on LinkedIn in last 30 days

Following your company

Have shared experiences with you

With TeamLink intro

With TeamLink intro through your executives

Past customer (only with Advanced Plus with CRM integration)

Past colleague

Posted Content

Keywords in article

Personal

Connection

Geography

Industry

Years of experience

Connections of

Groups

First Name

Last Name

Profile language

TeamLink connections of

School

Workflow

Lead lists

People in CRM

Persona

Account lists

People you interacted with

Saved leads and accounts

When using the search within Sales Navigator, it’s essential to build your lists using relevant filters to narrow down the results to a manageable size. As you add each filter, the result list will decrease until you’ve created your ideal target list.

Once you have your list of your ideal customers, you can save that search. You also have the ability to “Save” (or follow) each relevant contact on that list. This action enables you to keep updated on their activities and interactions on LinkedIn, helping you stay relevant and informed in your engagement with them.

Spotlights (activities and shared experiences)

One filter that truly stands out for its value is Spotlights for both leads and accounts.

Spotlights is a unique feature in Sales Navigator that helps you identify leads who are more likely to engage with you. By utilizing a variety of filters based on activities and shared experiences, Spotlights gives you a strategic edge in identifying and connecting with potential leads.

Filters available within Spotlights include:

Changed jobs in last 90 days: This filter helps find people who may be interested in making an impression in their new role, making them more open to connecting if you can add value.

Mentioned in the news in last 30 days: This filter allows you to personalize your outreach based on recent news mentions.

Posted on LinkedIn in last 30 days: This filter prioritizes your outreach to leads who have recently posted on LinkedIn, providing insights on what’s important to them. You can use this information to create a personal message or to engage with their content.

Following your company: This filter identifies leads that have followed or commented on your company’s posts on LinkedIn, indicating potential interest.

Have shared experiences with you: This filter helps leverage common experiences to establish rapport in your outreach.

With TeamLink intro: This filter finds leads who are already connected to colleagues at your company, providing a potential path for warm introductions.

With TeamLink intro through your executive: This filter identifies if an executive at your company has a relationship with a potential buyer that could provide a warm introduction.

Past customer: This filter will help you uncover hidden allies by finding leads who worked at a company that has been your customer. This data is based on the opportunities in your CRM and is only available to Advanced Plus customers.

Past colleague: This filter identifies if a past colleague is now working at the company you’re targeting, potentially providing introductions and insight on the best person(s) to reach out to.

Viewed your profile in last 90 days: This filter alerts you when a potential buyer has recently viewed your profile, providing an opportunity for personalized connection requests.

Spotlight features available for Accounts (companies)

In addition to the value Spotlights brings to individual lead search, Sales Navigator also offers additional features for Accounts (companies) with the Advanced and Advanced Plus subscription.

The Buyer Intent Activities filter includes actions taken by people within the targeted Account, such as LinkedIn ad engagement, InMail acceptance for a colleague, company LinkedIn page visits, or LinkedIn profile visits to colleagues and leadership. This feature demonstrates the power of Sales Navigator to not just focus on Leads (individuals) but also on holistic account-based strategies.

Additional features in Sales Navigator

Beyond the advanced search function I’ve covered here, there are many additional features available within Sales Navigator that you can see in the chart I shared above, showing the difference between Sales Navigator’s Core, Advanced, and Advanced Plus plans.

Consider investing in Sales Navigator if you’re facing these challenges:

You often reach the commercial search limit (a restriction LinkedIn imposes on the number of searches you can conduct within a given period on free accounts).

You’re looking for a customized newsfeed solely featuring leads and companies you’ve selected as potential buyers.

You require more search and filter options.

You’d like to utilize your colleagues’ connections for warm introductions through TeamLink.

You’re keen on tracking buyer engagement with personalized content through Smart Links.

You want detailed insights into who’s viewing your profile.

You’re after flexibility in creating notes and custom lead lists, aiding in organized outreach.

You want to save successful search lists.

You need CRM integration (Microsoft Dynamics 365 or Salesforce.com) for enterprise users with the Advanced Plus version.

LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator offers the flexibility to tap into premium information and additional tools. While LinkedIn’s free Advanced Search can assist in locating ideal leads, Sales Navigator includes comprehensive search filters to pinpoint your precise target customers. It allows you to save searches and receive new results daily, weekly, or monthly. With over three dozen additional filters, Sales Navigator empowers you to refine your search, save time, and produce superior results.

Having experimented with free and premium accounts alongside Sales Navigator, we’ve discovered that Sales Navigator outshines the rest when it comes to social selling.

Deciding on the Right LinkedIn Subscription

Like all social media platforms, LinkedIn is constantly evolving, so it can be hard to know which plan will work best for you.

Whether you decide to invest in Sales Navigator or Premium Business, or use the free LinkedIn membership, the key is to stay organized with your social selling activities.

While it may seem like it’s a lot more work to set up a lead generation system in the beginning, in the long run, being organized will:

Save you time and effort

Prevent you from getting overwhelmed

Enable you to generate leads more efficiently

You can also avoid making costly mistakes that come with being disorganized, such as sending the wrong message in the wrong context at the wrong time. When you do that, you lose prospects forever, so it pays to stay organized.

With tools such as Sales Navigator, getting and staying organized is faster and easier. Moreover, such tools provide additional features that will increase the success of your social selling activities.

LinkedIn’s Pay to Play Professional Plans

Social media has spoiled us over the years, giving us the ability to market to consumers without spending money. That’s never happened before. But social media platforms have caught on to that, and now capitalize on our need to use them for marketing.

LinkedIn has done the same thing Facebook did when it changed its algorithm for Business Pages. The change made it almost impossible for Business Pages to be seen organically. That was the start of the Pay to Play models on social media platforms.

Upgrading to a paid LinkedIn membership may not be right for everyone, but it certainly will make sense for those who can find, connect, and build relationships with their ideal customers on LinkedIn.

I hope this comparison has helped you decide which LinkedIn membership level will work best for you.

If you need help creating or improving your lead generation or social selling strategy on LinkedIn, you can contact me here.

In the era of digital consumerism, social networks have become an arena for the stiff competition between entrepreneurs, corporations, and salespeople for the best sales leads. And it just so happens that LinkedIn is one of the most overlooked channels in terms of finding new prospects.

When used wisely, LinkedIn can help you build a network full of qualified prospective leads.

LinkedIn search hacks to find qualified leads

Bad news – cold-calling isn’t working anymore.

Good news – you can find and engage leads in a highly productive and meaningful way. To do that, start prospecting on LinkedIn with these nine effective hacks.

LinkedIn Hack #1. “People also viewed” check

You must have noticed the “People also viewed” section on LinkedIn profiles. When you open a prospect’s profile, you may see this box to the right of your screen (it’s at the bottom on mobile).

“People also viewed” shows people’s profiles viewed by the same LinkedIn members who also viewed the profile you see in front of you.

Users often misunderstand this feature and never bother to use it. People also viewed gives you a great chance to see similar connections to the ones you already have, based on viewing habits and preferences. Just by viewing the profile of one of your prospect’s, you may be able to view other potential prospects very similar to them.

LinkedIn Hack #2. Competitors’ network investigation

“Your competitor’s connections may become your potential customer list,” says President & Co-Founder of Enventys Partners, Roy Morejon. He does competitor analysis on social media regularly to keep up with the latest news on the competitive market and find the right prospects for his digital products.

Competitor’s presence and activity analysis is an essential thing to do in the quest for new leads. Study the content that your competitors are posting and commenting on and if you are connected to them you can also browse their connections. Competitor research, from a broader perspective, can help you build a winning strategy to outperform your competitors.

LinkedIn Hack #3. Scroll through skills endorsements

Open your lead’s profile and scroll down to the “Skills” section to check who has provided endorsements.

These LinkedIn members are, most likely, having similar characters or interests. Consequently, they may become your new leads.

“One of the easiest ways to boost your lead gen on LinkedIn is to find new names and nurture leads who work in similar industries and share common skills,” believes David Patterson-Cole, CEO & Co-Founder of Moonchaser.

“Endorsing skills, they recognize each other’s professional abilities and are prone to associate with each other more tightly. You will get considerably more targeted prospects out of those who endorsed your leads’ skills.”

LinkedIn Hack #4. Alumni search tool application

Depending on what you hunt for, there are two basic ways here:

Searching for LinkedIn members from your alma mater

Find the page of the college or university you attended and click on the Alumni tab and use the LinkedIn Alumni tool to search and filter the school’s graduates by keywords, job titles or companies. Most LinkedIn users are more open to connect with those who attended the same school and share a similar education-related story. Create personalized connection requests that will help you convert these users into connections, from there it is much easier to build relationships with these connections and convert them into clients.

Searching for LinkedIn members from other schools

Open the school’s page you’re interested in and browse alumni there. You do want to gain the attention of decision makers on LinkedIn, don’t you?

For instance, you may find all Harvard, Stanford or Boston alumni who are CEOs at the present moment.

Finished your search? It’s the best time now to learn how to export LinkedIn contacts (even the ones you’re not connected with) to organize an effective prospecting process.

LinkedIn Hack #5. Comments on posts research

Got a notification about one of your lead’s posts? Don’t ignore it. When possible, engage with the posts of your prospects. There are a couple of important reasons to do this, one – they will likely be very appreciative of your comment, especially if they don’t usually get many.

Secondly, by commenting on their posts you are becoming more recognized by your prospects. This is very helpful when you go to message them. People are much more likely to respond to people they feel they know.

LinkedIn Hack #6. User interactions browsing

The “Activity” section within your profile will shed light on how people interact with your posts.

Take a look at which of your posts are getting more views, and which are getting less. Use this information to write LinkedIn posts that inspire action and engagement.

Examine the profiles of people who commented or reacted to your posts, use this as an opportunity to spark conversations with those that could be a good prospect for you.

LinkedIn Hack #7. Lead Recommendations within Sales Navigator

It’s the laziest way to find targeted leads with LinkedIn and the best thing since sliced bread (but requires a paid LinkedIn Sales Navigator membership).

Make the most of this option in three ways:

1. Find recommended leads in your lead’s profile.

Go to your lead’s profile and use the Lead filters+ in the extended search section at the top of your Sales Navigator homepage to get a list of up to 2,500 connections.

2. Get lead recommendations for a particular company.

If you haven’t saved this company, find it using the search bar. If you did save it, go to Lists and then Saved accounts, click “View account” and find recommended leads at the top of the company’s Account Details page. Click “Save” to save the profiles or “See more recommendations”.

3. Check the Recommended Leads in your profile.

You can view those from the Leads List tab. In this case, you get an auto-generated list of up to 100 recommended prospects. If you don’t have any lists yet, you may click “Create lead list” and add your saved leads to the list.

Lead recommendations are based on three factors:

The history of your searches

Your sales preferences

Your interaction with users (views, communications, leads you already got, etc.)

Once you have got all the lists, proceed to the next step – create a lead generation process.

LinkedIn Hack #8. Use Boolean search

With the advanced search on LinkedIn and specific search operators, you may find potential clients and can then filter them by the job title, school, company, location, etc.

The higher your membership level, the more filters are open to you. However, regardless of what level of LinkedIn membership you have, you can always further refine and target your searches using Boolean search modifiers.

OR – displays results that include either the first search term or the second one. i.e. Coach OR Consultant

NOT – shows results that contain the search term excluding the one you indicate after NOT. i.e. Coach NOT Sales

AND – shows results that enclose both search terms. i.e. Social AND Selling

Quotations “” – the quoted search will give you the results with the phrase exactly the way you put it inside the quotation marks. It’s especially helpful for multi-word searches. i.e. “Social Selling”

Parentheses () – allow you to combine terms in a more complex search. i.e. “social selling trainer” NOT (author OR “account manager”)

It will only take a couple of minutes of your time to find out more on how to use Boolean search on LinkedIn effectively.

LinkedIn Hack #9. Save your best searches

Let’s say you found a prospect using one of the search tips. What to do next? You can save your progress and get notified about new possible prospects.

You just need to press “Create search alert” on the right side of the search page and save preferences choosing “Save”.

Searching New Prospects on LinkedIn: Final Note

There are many underutilized features on LinkedIn that can significantly improve your lead generation opportunities.

Many have been mentioned above, however here are a couple more articles you may want to read…

10 LinkedIn Hacks or Things You Didn’t Know

17 LinkedIn Ninja Tricks Experts Haven’t Taught You Yet

Need some more sure-fire tips on prospecting successfully using LinkedIn? Take a look at our free three-part LinkedIn Leads training series that will help you build your authority and attract more clients on LinkedIn. Click here to get access.

Catherine Schwartz is a marketing and e-commerce specialist who helps brands grow their revenue and move their businesses to new levels.
