Lightly floating on water, cool with the moisture from below, absorbing the warmth of the sun from above the leaf grows across the surface of the pond. The Victoria amazonica, who’s common name is Giant water lily or Amazon water lily, has leaves that can get up to 6′ wide.1

It was a hot and sunny day at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago, Illinois, USA when photographer Olaf showed up in the early afternoon. He was walking through the park that is adjacent to the greenhouses by the conservatory when he spied his subject, the Victoria amazonica.

The Victoria amazonica is one of Olaf’s favorite specimens so it is easy to see why this subject caught his eye. Taking the picture while standing, all it took was this one shot to get what he wanted.

Camera: Sony DSC-H9
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 23.4 mm
ISO Speed: 100

After asking Olaf what he liked about the green in the picture he said “The leaf is an awesome shade of green and it has a great texture.” Victoria amazonica is known for it’s sharp spines on the underside of the leaves that give it such a great texture. 1

It’s Olaf’s love for plans started with his Grandmother “Granny” who worked three gardens in their village. She grew everything from Parsley, Cherries, Dill, Gooseberries, Dahlias and Gladiolas just to name a few.2 Since that time with Granny, Olaf has been growing plants and that passion has grown into foliage photography. Olaf is now known for his plant photography. In fact, he has the permanent alias of flowerfreak on flickr.

Olaf told me what he liked about this photo, “The vigor of these plants. This is a SEEDLING(!) and it already has 3′-leaves!” He went on to tell me when I asked about the day, “It was a really hot day and I had some good conversations with some of the resident gardeners.” Talking about plants and taking pictures is “a blast” to Olaf.

The passion comes through in his photographs. Olaf is at ease with his camera and enjoys photography several times a week. He has become a better photographer through trial and error and is driven by his excitement of photography.

Any of about 10,000 – 12,000 species (division Filicophyta) of nonflowering vascular plants that have true roots, stems, and complex leaves and reproduce by spores. Though ferns were once classified with the primitive horsetails and club mosses, botanists have since made a clear distinction between the scalelike, one-veined leaves of those plants and the more complexly veined fronds of the ferns, which are more closely related to the leaves of seed plants. Ferns come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Many are small, fragile plants; others are treelike (see tree fern). The life cycle is characterized by an alternation of generations between the mature, fronded form (the sporophyte) familiar in greenhouses and gardens and the form that strongly resembles a moss or liverwort (the gametophyte). Ferns are popular houseplants.

Now Buy From Us" width="200" height="179" class="alignright size-full wp-image-159" />This whole ‘green’ thing has gotten a little out of hand. The trend right now is caring for the environment. So now every company is sending out press releases with the word ‘green’ somewhere in the title detailing how environmentally aware their company is. If a company plants a tree at their campus headquarters, a press release is immediately sent out to capitalize on this fad. Here are a few recent examples.

Organic food has been around for decades and many restaurants have a long history of operating their properties with an eye towards the environment. The organic food they serve is highly regulated, with certification standards (for better or worse) backed by the U.S. government.

Susan Rose painted Spring Rain in the spring of 2008.

It is full of green gradients, hidden color and different levels of perception. Green is the main color with green edges, boxes and green accents. I asked Susan about the green in this picture and she said “all the different shades of green are the greens of nature. Specifically, there are these really bright greens which are the spring greens. The circle is almost a yellow but it is a yellow green.”

On of the things that I like about Susan’s paintings like this one is that you can hold it all four ways and see something different.

Shown here, with the yellow ball on top makes me want to see the yellow as the sun. Now the bright green on the bottom is grass with a yellow rolling hill and it is currently raining. The golden green leaf in the center looks like it is climbing towards the sun.

There is a form of gray that subtly dominates the image, going from one edge to the other. It looks like different things the more you let your imagination play with it. I asked Susan about the gray form and she replied, “it can be whatever you want to be. The gray is like the gray you see in the sky with rain clouds. It also makes me think about landscapes of snow capped mountains with sand dunes in the foreground. Others have mentioned it looks like fabric”

She goes on to say that it is whatever you want it to be, it’s what you see.

With the painting this way, the clouds are outlined across the sky. A green mountain sharply points out above. The sun is rising, it must be morning. It’s a spring rain of color as the greens, yellows, golds and a bit of red come raining down. The leaf again is climbing towards the sky.

Susan has used a canvas that wraps around the edge. She paints around the edge and in this painting, this is where she signed it. You can see her signature in the graphic on the left.

I asked her to tell me about the green triangle with the blue streak in it.

I like the brightness of the blue it’s a little discordant thing. it’s peaking out from behind the white gray shape and it is the only blue in the whole entire picture. It’s a little bit of a surprise because of the touch of blue there. It’s just like the red over here, it’s the only red in the picture.

Spring Rain is a pleasure to look at with it’s green gray with bits of yellow and black with touches of brown. The colors of the earth after the sky has had it’s Spring Rain.

A green meadow, a very green meadow with a dark green forest behind. The green of the field in the picture is real, no extra enhancements. The meadow meets the forest witnessed by the old barn.

This picture was taken outside the small village of Buchenbach which is on the edge of the Black Forrest Mountains in southern Germany. The photographer, Helmuth, didn’t get the picture easily. After seeing the scene in bad light he returned to take a handful of pictures, one of them was this one.

I asked Helmuth why he wanted to take this shot. “Well, I am a little bit into pictures showing as much as possible space for the main object. I saw this scenery a week before but the lightning situation wasn’t good, but I knew I have to come back to this place anyhow.”

His timing must have been perfect because the sunlight is illuminating the green of the grass beautifully. Speaking of perfection, look at that horizon line. I got out my screen ruler and measured the pixels and the shot is perfectly level. Helmuth told me this was hand held, I would have thought it was a tripod shot.

Camera: Leica D-LUX 3
Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 16.7 mm

The green of the grass is electric. When asked about the green in this photo Helmet said “For me the green of the grass is so different to green of the forest behind. It appears a little bit artificial / unnatural.”

The almost surreal green grass meeting the dark green forest is one of the things I like about this photo. I also like how the composition makes me want to walk into it.

Helmeth is in the habit of taking his camera with him as he travels.
Travel with Helmeth on this flickr photostream.

Helmeth titled this photograph with a fill in the blank title. Here is how I would complete the title; “I think in a little while from now…” I’d like to take a walk behind the old barn and along the forest edge.

How would you complete the title?

“I think in a little while from now… “

Welcome to the Top Green Blog where we will be talking about and looking at all things green. It is said that people who like green enjoy harmony and balance.

Green is the growing color because so many plants are green.

Green is a Primary Color

In the RGB (red green blue) additive color system, green is a primary color. Primary colors are used to mix and make other colors. The RGB system is used in light applications like TV and computer screens. In mixing of pigments or dyes green is made by combining blue and yellow.

Green Nature

It is my opinion that green is the color of nature. When you are in a forest or park and really look around, the number of green colors is amazing. In some societies people plant green grass around their homes. I’m sure there are many reasons for this but one is to have green nature nearby.

During the course of this blog, we will be looking at green creatures including:

Green Frogs
Green Turtles
Green Snakes
Green Fish
Green Birds
Green Algae
Green Insects
Green Man

Green Movement

Some people like the color green so much that they have named a movement around it. “Going Green” now means to have a lifestyle or use products that use less energy or waste than other products. I’m not sure what will happen when everything goes green, I guess we will get “going greener.” There will be stories on the Green Movement in the Top Green Blog.

Green Party

In many countries, there is a political party called the Green Party. They focus on ecology, nonviolence and having a social conscious. Because they are named after our color Green, we will attend their party and see what they have to say.

Is that Green or Greene

There are lots of people in the world who have the last name of “Green.” Some liked the “e” so much that they have an extra one at the end.
