A Sharp AQUOS Android phone with 3D camera visits the FCC

It is not a secret that Sharp is a very well established maker of high-end Android phones for the Japanese market. About a month ago, we lusted after one of the company's creations which was made only for local consumption. Then, several days later, we got excited when Sharp made a press-release stating that the AQUOS line of Android phones will become available globally. Well, folks, it looks like the electronics giant might be on its way to make good on this statement - one of Sharp's AQUOS droids just made a visit to the FCC.

The device which we are talking about is most likely the Sharp AQUOS IS12SH - an Android smartphone which was launched in Japan several weeks ago.

The highlight of the droid is definitely the 3D camera which consists of two 8MP units. There is a 4.2" screen with qHD resolution, and a tri-band CDMA radio, along with a full connectivity on board. No other specs can be confirmed from the FCC filing at this point.

The CDMA network compatibility normally raises questions about a potential release on the Verizon Wireless, or Sprint networks (we would expect a more exciting name for the phone if this is to happen). Unfortunately, there is no information about such an occurrence at this point. We will definitely keep you posted on future findings related to this matter.

Lotus CEO talks smack about Ferrari 458, McLaren MP4-12C

A few days ago, we received word that Lotus was ditching the Toyota-sourced V8 and dropping its own engine into the new Esprit. Now we get a few pointed remarks from the automaker, intent on clarifying its future position in the supercar segment, and a bit more insight into the powerplant.

Lotus CEO Dany Bahar told a recent press conference audience that its upcoming flagship will offer a more "authentic" driving experience than the targeted Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C. Those are fighting words, directed at very lofty rivals. Furthermore, according to Bahar, any injection of KERS-style (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) technology in the new Esprit will be to add to the driving experience, not detract from it.

LG Optimus 3D officially released in Europe, probably without Gingerbread

Announced way back in February, the LG Optimus 3D is now finally ready to hit the market: LG has officially confirmed that the smartphone is launching now in Europe, and in "more than 60 markets around the world over the next several weeks."

I was hoping that LG delayed the release of the Optimus 3D in order to upgrade it to Android 2.3 Gingerbread - however, it looks like this didn't happen. The press release announcing the handset's launch doesn't include any reference to what version of Android the Optimus 3D runs (in fact, it doesn't include the word Android at all), so I assume it's still 2.2 Froyo, as it was in February. But fret not, an upgrade to Gingerbread will be made available eventually.

Anyway, as you may already know, the new smartphone features a 4.3 inch WVGA glasses-free 3D display, Wi-Fi, DLNA, HSPA, GPS, 3D augmented reality browser, HDMI, dual 5MP cameras for 3D video recording, dual-core 1GHz processor, and 8GB of on-board memory.

Sportauto runs 8:15 Nurburging lap in BMW 1 M Coupe

The new BMW 1 Series M Coupe has finally taken a timed spin around the N�rburgring, and the results aren't bad. According to Sportauto, the rear-wheel-drive, 335-horsepower compact two-door ran an 8:15, putting it slightly ahead of the Audi TT RS and the Audi RS 3 Sportback. (Both Audis share the same 340-hp 2.5-liter turbo five-cylinder and all-wheel drive.) More impressively, the newest addition to the M Family beat a 320-horsepower rear-wheel drive Porsche Cayman S by two seconds and left the 300-horsepower BMW 335i coupe eating its dust a full eleven seconds later.

Otterbox Reflex iPhone Case Review

If you own an iPhone and have dropped it, did you have that moment of absolute panic just as it hit the ground? Depending on many factors, your iPhone was either OK, scratched, cracked or dead. Three out of these four possibilities are not good. I will admit, I am a klutz and a little - maybe a lot - paranoid about my iPhone 4 getting damaged in any way. The horror stories I hear and read about make me cringe. So, I ALWAYS have a case on it. I know that cases never look as good as a naked iPhone and if I could be guaranteed mine would never get a scratch on it, I wouldn't use a case. But this is an imperfect world, so I happily ugly-up my iPhone to protect it. Lucky for us paranoids, that's where Otterbox comes in.

Otterbox has been making iPhone cases since the beginning and have many choices depending on your wallet and stress level. I have used both the Commuter and Defender cases and liked them both for different reasons. I prefer the Defender the most, but it hides the iPhone completely. In a recent review, I said the Defender reminds me of those thick-necked bodyguards you see around celebrities. Beauty surrounded by lots of beefy protection. The Commuter case shows off more of the iPhone but offers less protection.

Otterbox has now developed a case that protects as well as the Commuter, but is much slimmer and looks much better. The Reflex case has what Otterbox calls crumple zones, which are similar in concept to bumpers on cars. If dropped, the Reflex absorbs the shock of impact by crumpling, then snapping back into place, leaving the iPhone unhurt. You can see this for yourself in slow-motion on the Otterbox website. It's pretty cool.

Like other Otterbox cases, the Reflex uses both rubber and hard plastic. The difference with the Reflex is that there is no assembly as with the Commuter and Defender. Just snap the two halves together and you're good to go. The plastic acts as a skeleton and the rubber provides shock protection and grip.

Using the Reflex couldn't be easier. Slide the iPhone into the top half and then slide on the bottom half until it clicks into place. When you need to dock the iPhone, just slide off the bottom half and dock. As easy and convenient as this is, I have a couple of issues with this. First, once I get a case on, I want to leave it on. I'm not a big fan of cases in more than one piece. Secondly, when you slide off the bottom half of the case for docking, you have half a case to place somewhere. I have a case from another company that is one piece and is thin enough to dock with just about anything with no problem. But that case does not protect as well. Now if the Reflex could protect as well as it does in one snap-on piece and be dockable, it would be the perfect case.

The docking port, earbud port and silencer switch are not protected. The volume and on/off buttons as well as the iPhone's back glass are completely covered. Each of the four corners have those crumple zones mentioned earlier.

The Reflex comes with one screen protector (which I don't use). Speaking of screen protectors, I used oto have one for the back of the iPhone, but when I first used the Reflex, it peeled that protector right off. Oh, well.

While I am not so dumb as to try to see how many time I can drop my iPhone to test the Reflex, I have dropped it a couple of times on hard tile flooring while using the Reflex. My iPhone escaped perfectly - not a scratch. I shudder to think what could have happened without the Reflex.

The Reflex is Otterbox's most attractive iPhone case so far. It comes in four color choices - black, pink, blue and gray. Note that the color choices are for the plastic only, the rubber is black on all versions. The combination of rubber and plastic is designed tastefully and the workmanship is first-rate. But is it worth $45? Ask yourself: Do you think Apple would replace your iPhone just because you live in a world where accidents happen and well, you know, Apple is such a nice company who employ nice people who like you and feel really bad about that boo-boo on your iPhone?

Facebook App For iPad in The Works

We're not sure why it's taken them so long, but Facebook is putting the final touches on an app that will be available for iPad users.

Many Facebook users have resorted to using third-party apps to access the popular social networking site on their tablet devices, including My Pad, iFace and Friendly.

The delay in an iPad-friendly app might be due to Facebook's rumored plans of a new mobile platform that will take on Apple's App Store, according to reports.

Called "Project Spartan," it will reportedly by HTML5-based and will aim to "break the stranglehold" Apple currently has on the mobile app market.

Previously, Facebook was quick to launch their mobile app for the iPhone when the app store launched in 2008. The iPad though has been out since April 2010, with users waiting over a year for an app from the social-networking giant.

La Sardina Lomo Cameras Look Like Tin Cans

While some photographers brag about the megapixels in their DSLR cameras, others took a different rought by reviving an alternative school of photography called Lomography, which uses a specialized camera with fisheye or pinhole lens and an unadjustable 1x100 shutter speed. It is probably because of the vintage looks of Lomo photographs why its new cameras often have that vintage design.

Thankfully a new batch of Lomo cameras decide to ditch the old school to come up with quirky designs. The La Sardina series are made to look like tin cans commonly used for sardines. These plastic cameras feature a 22-millimeter plastic fisheye lens, the usual 1x100 shutter, and bulb settings that can be adjusted into three different levels of intensity. The design of clip-on flash attachment appears like the light bulb seen in old cameras; it even comes with a set of gels in four colors.

LulzSec: We Didn't Hack Sega; So We'll Defend Them!

Hacking group LulzSec today came forward and stated that they are not responsible for the network attack on Sega's online gaming network, Sega Pass. In a twist of events, LulzSec issued a statement to Sega, claiming that they will help Sega take down whoever initiated the attack, saying this on their Twitter page:

�@Sega � contact us. We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down.�

So far, no hacker groups are coming forward to claim credit for the attack. However, a number of recent attacks on game companies and their online services are credited with LulzSec, which publicly lists their attacks. But LulzSec denies that it was ever involved with the breach at Sega.

Earlier yesterday, Sega's online gaming network Sega Pass was attacked, which brought the service completely down. Sega's response team confirmed the attack and mentioned that critical customer information is compromised.

Customer details such as names, DOBs, email addresses, and passwords were taken, but Sega says that passwords are encrypted. On the other hand, officials at the company stated that financial information is safe, as those details do not reside on Sega's own servers. Sega is still investigating the breach today, but have not identied new information.

Company officials recommend Sega Pass users change their login credentials as soon as possible.

Spotify rumored to launch this July

We previously reported that Spotify managed to get three out of the four major labels onboard with its music streaming service and judging by what Spotify's general manager, Jonathan Forster, recently announced in an advertising conference - we could be seeing the service in the US very soon. According to Forster, Spotify is wrapping up the final licensing deals for its US launch. While he wasn't specific about a release date, he did say something interesting though:

�We won't launch before July 5th.�

Now this doesn't mean that we'll be seeing Spotify on July 6th, but it does feel like the release of Spotify isn't too far away. With no other music streaming service capable of competing against Apple's iCloud service, it makes sense for record labels to want Spotify to make its debut in the US. After all, I'm pretty sure they don't want one service to monopolize the whole market either. Well we've already passed mid June, let's see what July has in store for us.

One of the phone manufacturers that we don't get to write about all that often is India's Maxx Mobiles. Well, today we've got something new from that exact outfit.

Maxx Mobiles has launched two new dual-SIM phones, the MX372 and MQ368, the latter having a full physical QWERTY keyboard fitted. The MX372 has a �normal' T9 phone keypad, and both phones come quite cheap.

The Maxx MX372 has a 2-inch display, an optical trackpad, a 2 MP camera, a dedicated music button, and weighs just 61 grams. It comes with Java app support and Facebook and eBuddy IM preinstalled.

The MX372 comes in white, pink, purple, and wine red, and goes for Rs. 2524.

The MQ368 also has a 2-inch display, only this time it's in landscape. It's also got a 2 MP camera and optical trackpad. The MQ368 has a 1000 mAh battery, and even has special buttons for accessing Facebook (a la HTC ChaCha, no doubt) and MSN. The Maxx MQ368 costs Rs. 2636.

Using Gestures To Take Self-Portraits

The act of taking self-portraits in an art unto itself, some people have the gift to manage to get an entire group of 10 people into a photo while taking a self-portrait while others not so lucky end up with photographs that cut people out or are angled badly. Timers can sometimes help although it does make one look rather silly holding a pose for 5 seconds until the camera takes the shot. Thanks to front facing cameras in certains phones and tiltable LCD screens on some cameras, taking self-portraits has started to get a bit easier.

If that wasn't easy enough, the researchers Shaowei Chu and Jiro Tanaka at the University of Tsukuba's Department of Computer Science in Japan are working on a new technology that incorporates the use of hand gestures to take a photo by hooking the device on to cameras and uses a computer vision algorithm to recognize hand gestures and take the photos. As it stands the device is too large to be attached to regular cameras but the researchers have said that it is starting to look promising. Hopefully, instead of an external device, they will soon find a way to incorporate the technology and algorithm into the camera itself.

Panasonic Announces Rugged Toughbook Android Tablet for Business

The enterprise-grade tablet will be introduced in the fourth quarter of this year. In addition to it's rugged build, it will have a bright, daylight-viewable screen. An active stylus will allow mobile workers in sales, customer service and mobile point-of-sale environments to capture signatures on the device's 10.1" XGA multi-touch display. Toshiba Launches Satellite P745 / P755 / P775 Entertainment Laptop Line

The new P models include the 14-inch P745, 15.6-inch P755 and its 3D-capable version P755 3D, as well as the P775 17.3-incher.

The notebooks are powered by the Intel Core i3, i5, and i7, or an AMD A6 Fusion processor. Some configurations include the Nvidia GeForce GT 540M dedicated GPUs and Optimus switchable graphics, Blu-ray drives, Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology, and 4G WiMAX mobile broadband modules.

Kinect SDK used to create Twitter client

The Official Kinect SDK was only released yesterday and it looks like folks have already started getting busy with it. James Pfaff, an intern at Microsoft came up with a simple Twitter client for the Kinect. He used hand gestures to select the characters, and voice commands to add spaces, confirm and delete characters. Judging by the video demonstration it doesn't look like the fastest or most efficient way to send out a Tweet, and some of you might be thinking - if he can get it to recognize voice commands, why not make it recognize alphabets being spoken instead? Maybe if he made the whole client completely gesture based, it would make sense as an alternative client for people who wanted to Tweet but couldn't speak.

Anyway, this client should mark the beginning of things to come - expect even more homebrewed Kinect projects in the coming months.

HP Pre 3 pre-orders start in the UK, �349.99 and shipping on July 8

This February, HP announced its new lineup of webOS-powered hardware for 2011, while also getting rid of the Palm brand. Since then, we've played with the devices, and while we've heard a lot of things about the TouchPad and the Veer, the Pre 3 isn't a device we get to write about every week. Which is a bit strange, since it's HP's flagship smartphone. Perhaps the brand evokes Palm's failures to get any webOS traction.

Anyway, the Pre 3 is now up for pre-order in the UK, with two well known independent online retailers already listing it for similar prices, and with deliveries expected to start at the beginning of July.

First off, Play.com lets you pre-order a Pre 3 for �349.99, and it promises it will start shipping the devices on July 8. Now that price really is very good, especially if you consider what you're getting for the money in terms of hardware and integrated software. Then again, it may still prove too expensive to overcome the main issue that webOS has: the lack of apps. That's what's always been plaguing this OS, but hopefully HP will manage to do something about that over the course of this year. The OS is solid, functional, and dare I say it � beautiful � but in today's app-ridden world, that still isn't enough to reach mainstream smartphone success.

Clove is the other UK retailer which is already taking pre-orders for the Pre 3. It asks �360, and announces delivery in �early July� � so about at the same time as Play.com.

If you're looking forward to getting the latest webOS-powered smartphone, and want to be among the first people in the UK to own it, you should probably pre-order one from the retailer that you like most.

Porsche is being forced to recall a handful of its most sporting models. Certain Porsches equipped with center-locking hubs need to head back to the dealership for a new set of wheels. Why? The hubs can prematurely wear, which means the wheels could separate and take a vacation from the rest of the car.

Sony Ericsson WT19i leaks, may be another Android Walkman

A yet-unheard of Sony Ericsson Android-powered smartphone has leaked via user agent profiles discovered by Xperia Blog. The model number is WT19, and it will have two versions, WT19i (that's going to be the �international' one as per Sony Ericsson's traditional naming scheme), and the WT19a (which may have some American-specific bands).

Not much information has surfaced in those UAProfs, however we do expect to find out more about this device soon. What we do know already is that it will be powered by a Cortex A8 processor, it will have 320�480 screen resolution, and, based on that possibly a screen size between 3 and 3.2 inches. The WT19 will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Most smartphones these days come with some sort of Facebook plug-in or widget, letting you know what your friends are up to through their wall posts, but what happens when you're a true blue Facebook fan, and want to remain up-to-date with the latest happenings on your Facebook account? Well, AT&T subscribers at the moment can always settle for the HTC ChaCha which is a Facebook-centric phone, where it has already made its way to the FCC in a filing.

Known as the HTC PH06130, the ChaCha has already picked up FCC approval for GSM 850 and 1900 bands, in addition to WCDMA bands II and V. Needless to say, those are the same bands that will be used by AT&T in the US, so you can be more or less sure that the ChaCha is ready to rock and roll over at AT&T.

Just a quick recap � the HTC ChaCha will be an Android-powered device that comes complete with a full QWERTY-style keyboard that is reminiscent of the BlackBerry. An 800MHz processor runs proceedings from within, while a 2.6? touchscreen display rounds off the list of features alongside a tiny Facebook button that allows you to post content online in a jiffy. As for pricing or availability, we know that as much as one is able to tell you who the list of stocks that will go up tomorrow, today.

The first Sony Android tablet (S1 or S2) will be available in Europe before the end of September

Sony's first Android-powered tablet may hit the stores in Europe at the end of September, if a private note sent from Sony's marketing group and seen by Engadget is to be believed. The note did not mention a name for the tablet, and said pre-orders would start in August.

Clearly, that unnamed tablet will be either Sony's S1 or S2. Both of these devices were pre-announced (Sony didn't give any actual specs save for the screen sizes) in April with a projected release time frame of �this fall� � so that fits. Since then, we've seen both the S1 and the S2 pass through the FCC, but that's about the extent of info we have had on them so far.

What remains to be seen is which tablet Sony chooses to launch first. Will it be the S1 with its curved back design? Or the S2 with its dual-touchscreens? Maybe Sony will launch both tablets at the same time, or very close to each other. The truth is we just don't know at this point. What we do know however is that, at some point in September, if you're in Europe, you may just be able to buy a nice Sony Android tablet. In the UK, it will be at first sold by Sony directly, as well as department store John Lewis and a third still-unconfirmed retailer. After the famed �holiday season' passes, the tablet will become available elsewhere too.
