The Denver Nuggets got out of the gates at a furious pace. They were up 14-3 just four minutes into the game while shooting 75 percent from the floor. Coming out of a Portland Trail Blazers timeout, Portland started climbing back into the game, but Denver was keeping them at bay. When Nikola Jokic eventually made his trip to the bench, the Nuggets’ lead was five, but the bench was able to extend the lead to eight with a late laser from Bones Hyland to DeAndre Jordan for an easy dunk at the rim. The lead stretched to as many as 10 points early in the second quarter, and the Denver offense was still firing away from all over the floor, as they were 6-of-12 from 3-point range early on. Physical play from both sides was resulting in a lot of chippiness and bumps and bruises, but that wasn’t stopping anyone from scoring. A little over halfway through the quarter, the two sides were on pace for more than 60 points combined. Following a Portland turnover, quick thinking from Jokic and Kentavious Cauldwell-Pope resulted in a quick bucket to put Denver up by 13 for their largest lead of the game so far. Following a third foul by Jokic, the Nuggets slowly faded down the stretch of the first half. They led by 10 when he exited the game, and that lead was down to six at the half. The two sides came out of the half trading blows, but the main thing to track was the rate that Damian Lillard was drawing fouls. Jokic and Michael Porter Jr. had each been called for three fouls, and the team had yet to find an answer to him. Portland eventually tied the game up a little over two minutes into the quarter which finally wiped away a lead that was at one point 13. Things very quickly went from bad to worse. They had been outscored 24-9 in less than six minutes of action, and they were trailing by nine while Jokic and Porter were seated on the bench with their fourth fouls that they drew on back-to-back possessions. Anfernee Simons was single-handedly taking the game over for Portland with 22 points in the third quarter on 8-of-8 shooting and 6-of-6 from 3-point range. Denver was in the hole by 13 points with just under 3:30 remaining in the period. Denver got some back late in the quarter, but immediately gave the points back and trailed by 13 heading into the fourth. Denver started the fourth where they left off in the third with the defense struggling to get stops while Jokic picked up his fifth foul of the night on a questionable offensive foul call. Denver was trailing by 15 with a little over seven minutes remaining as they were hoping to claw their way back, but they weren’t getting that done quickly. Over the next few minutes, Denver gradually faded, and the lead was up to 22 with just over four minutes remaining when it appeared that that would be all she wrote for the Nuggets. Both sides had pulled their starters, and the goal was just to run out the clock at this point. However, the Blazers kept scoring, and they were up to 130 points with just under three minutes left. Denver would ultimately fall to the Blazers 135-110.

In fact, I know I can play a lot better." Smith had high expectations of himself, even as the most accurate quarterback in the league right now (73.5 completion percentage). To prove his point that even capable quarterbacks don't always start out strong, Smith brought up the early seasons of some Hall of Famers. "I know I might've struggled out the gate in pro football. That's just the reality of the NFL. Sometimes they give up on you fast," he said. "The numbers at the beginning of my career are kind of skewed if you ask me. "If you look at Peyton Manning, if you just judge his rookie season, you'd never think Peyton Manning would've become what he became. Steve Young too. Troy Aikman. The list goes on and on and on. Danny Ainge has a winning problem. Ainge, a longtime Boston Celtics fixture both on the floor as a player during the 1980s and in the front office from 2003-2021, is now stewarding a Utah Jazz rebuild as that team's prime decision maker. After the club flamed out in the first round of the 2021 playoffs, Ainge traded several well-compensated veterans on Utah's roster in a clear effort to help the team bottom out this year. All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, plus role players Royce O'Neal, Bojan Bogdanovic and Patrick Beverley (a throw-in from the Gobert deal who never actually played a game in Utah), all found new homes through Ainge's dealmaking this offseason. "Unfortunately" for Ainge, a lot of the pieces he received in return for his dealmaking, plus some leftover vets from the team's Gobert/Mitchell era, have congealed together incredibly well under new head coach Will Hardy (an ex-Celtics assistant coach, of course). The Jazz are 3-0 right now, having beaten three straight playoff-bound clubs at that: the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and New Orleans Pelicans. Ex-Cavaliers Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton have enjoyed stellar starts to their Jazz careers. Jarred Vanderbilt, Malik Beasley, and rookie center Walker Kessler have all been better-than-expected after arriving to Utah from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jazz guards Jordan Clarkson and Mike Conley, both big holdovers the club's playoff era, remain pretty darn effective. Center Kelly Olynyk, added in the Bogdanovic trade out of Detroit, has also been surprisingly solid. So what's Danny Ainge to do? Should he let this over-performing Utah roster continue to succeed, even if it could hurt the team's chances of tanking for a shot at top 2023 draft prospects Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson? Of course not! I'm not saying the Jazz are going 82-0 or anything, but this incarnation of the team still seems much, much better than most folks expected heading into the season. With Markkanen performing at this level, they could easily be a play-in tournament-level type club (i.e. anywhere from a 7-10 seed in the West). If the team were to win its play-in tournament games and enter the NBA's actual playoffs, it would forfeit a lottery slot entirely. That can't be risked. Sooner or later, Ainge will need to start shipping out the rest of his good players to ensure that this team can bottom out effectively. Your Los Angeles Lakers have already dealt with Ainge once since his fire sale began, taking back Beverley in a deal that sent Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson to Utah. THT has barely left the bench in his brief time with the Jazz (he's averaging just 12.3 minutes a game), while Johnson was cut before the start of the regular season. The Lakers as currently constructed are criminally, historically devoid of shooting (especially from long range) so far this season. They look decidedly worse than the Jazz, but since they don't actually own the rights to their draft pick this year (the New Orleans Pelicans can swap picks with L.A. in 2023), it does not actually behoove them to be this bad.

On the same day it was announced they lost their dynamic rookie running back for the season, the New York Jets are adding reinforcements. The Jets are acquiring running back James Robinson from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick that could become a fifth-round selection, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The trade comes after it was reported earlier Monday that New York running back Breece Hall was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Off to a 5-2 start -- the franchise's best since 2010 -- New York is a buyer ahead of the Nov. 1 trade deadline and responded to the calamitous loss of Hall with an impactful acquisition. In Robinson, New York is getting a former 1,000-yard rusher who's responded to an Achilles tear in 2021 with a promising 2022 so far. Robinson posted a 100-yard showing in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, but since then has seen Travis Etienne emerge as the Jaguars' top back. Having lost four in a row, Jacksonville is now getting at least a sixth-rounder for the former undrafted free agent. So far this season, Robinson has rushed for 340 yards and three touchdowns on 81 carries, with nine receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. He'll join Michael Carter in looking to fill the vacancy left by Hall, who had just begun showcasing his potential over the last few weeks. Hall had rushed for 463 yards and four touchdowns on 80 carries with 19 catches for 218 yards and a score this year. Though he's not the pass-catcher or game-breaker Hall is, Robinson does have big-play ability and showed in his rookie season he can be a bell-cow back if called upon. PHOENIX — The NBA’s 2021-22 regular season had its two best teams on a collision course. The Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors were the cream of the crop, and most interestingly, the two sides never got to face each other at full strength across four matchups due to injuries for both sides. It felt inevitable the two would meet in the Western Conference Finals, to the point where it was important to monitor developments in the bay area for the last few months of the regular season like rotation changes, players rounding into form and so on. An epic series was on the horizon. The Warriors held up their end of the bargain in getting there. The Suns did not. Ish Wainright is still dealing with lower back pain for the Suns and Jae Crowder remains away from the team. Other than that, both sides are good to go. The Warriors, like the Suns, didn’t do much this offseason in terms of roster movement. DiVincenzo was a signing on the taxpayer mid-level exception, one the Suns haven’t used yet, and veteran forward JaMychal Green joined after getting bought out by Oklahoma City. Other than that, the losses of Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II, two important role players during last year’s run, are the only notable changes. But a big-time addition is the health of center James Wiseman, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He played in 39 games as a rookie two seasons ago before not playing for over 18 months because of a knee injury. Wiseman is back. The Chicago Bulls earned a huge opening night win over the Maimi Heat last week. It was a great way to open the season against an elite team and it was made even better by getting the huge win on the road. It also came without Zach LaVine which is very impressive. However, the Bulls have since gotten LaVine back but nothing good to show for it. They have lost two since that first game and are now 1-2 on the year. They are looking to play much better than they did in their home opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night. They were absolutely destroyed on their home court by a final score of 128-96. It really wasn’t even close. Every top player on the team had an underwhelming night based on their standards. It is a tough game knowing what happened in the final seconds of the one prior. Now, it is time to bounce back. It is another home game on Monday night when the Bulls take on the Boston Celtics. This is a Celtics team that just lost in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors so you know that they are very good. There is no doubt that this is going to be a struggle. The Chicago Bulls need a good showing against the Boston Celtics on Monday. Everyone thought that would be the case against the Miami Heat as well. The Bulls stunned them without their top player. Now, with him back, they should be able to put up a good performance in this one. They will have to give it everything they can but after the last game, there is no excuse. Of course, it won’t be the end of the season if they drop it and go 1-3 but they shouldn’t want to do that. Things can go off the rails quickly when it comes to a team getting on a losing streak. It is going to be a struggle of a year but they can win some games. They aren’t going to be the best team in the NBA through Christmas so there isn’t going to be as much wiggle room for error in the second half. This game against Boston is a great way to bounce back after two tough losses over the weekend. It would be nice to earn some momentum.

ST. LOUIS — An armed former student broke into a St. Louis high school Monday morning warning, “You are all going to die!” before fatally shooting a teacher and a teenage girl, and wounding seven others before police killed him in an exchange of gunfire. The attack just after 9 a.m. at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School forced students to barricade doors and huddle in classroom corners, jump from windows and run out of the building to seek safety. One terrorized girl said she was eye-to-eye with the shooter before his gun apparently jammed and she was able to run out. Speaking at a news conference Monday afternoon, police Chief Michael Sack identified the shooter as 19-year-old Orlando Harris, who graduated from the school last year. Sack said the motive was still under investigation but “there’s suspicions that there may be some mental illness that he’s experiencing.” Investigators later searched Harris’ home, Sack said. Authorities didn’t name the victims, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch identified the dead teacher as Jean Kuczka. Her daughter said her mother was killed when the gunman burst into her classroom and she moved between him and her students. “My mom loved kids,” Abbey Kuczka told the newspaper. “She loved her students. I know her students looked at her like she was their mom.” Sack said the other fatality was a 16-year-old female who died at the school. Seven other 15- and 16-year-old students, four boys and three girls, were all in stable condition. Four students suffered gunshot wounds or graze wounds, two suffered bruises and one had a broken ankle. Sack declined to say how Harris was able to get into the building, which has security guards, locked doors and metal detectors. “If there’s somebody who has a will, they’re going to figure out, we don’t want to make it easy for them,” Sack said. “We just got to do the best we can to extend that time it takes them to get into the building to buy us time to respond.” Harris had the gun out when he arrived at the school and “there was no mystery about what was going to happen. He had it out and entered in an aggressive, violent manner.” Harris had nearly a dozen high-capacity magazines of ammunition with him, Sack said. “That’s a whole lot of victims. ... It’s certainly tragic for the families and it’s tragic for our community but it could have been a whole lot worse.” St. Louis Schools Superintendent Kelvin Adams said seven security guards were in the school at the time of the attack, each stationed at an entrance of the locked building. One of the guards noticed the gunman trying unsuccessfully to get in at a locked door. The guard notified school officials, who contacted police. Sack said the call about a shooter came in at 9:11 a.m. and officers arrived and had Harris down by 9:25 a.m. He and others praised the quick response of officers and other emergency responders. Central Visual and Performing Arts shares a building with another magnet school, Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience. Central has 383 students, Collegiate 336. Monday’s school shooting was the 40th this year resulting in injuries or death, according to a tally by Education Week — the most in any year since it began tracking shootings in 2018. The deadly attacks include the killings at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in May, when 19 children and two teachers died. Monday’s St. Louis shooting came on the same day a Michigan teenager pleaded guilty to terrorism and first-degree murder in a school shooting that killed four students in December 2021. Taniya Gholston said she was saved when the shooter’s gun jammed as he entered her classroom. “All I heard was two shots and he came in there with a gun,” the 16-year-old told the Post-Dispatch. “I was trying to run and I couldn’t run. Me and him made eye contact but I made it out because his gun got jammed.” Two teachers recounted near-miss confrontations with the shooter. Ashley Rench told The Associated Press she was teaching advanced algebra to sophomores when she heard a loud bang. He let me go,” Parks said. Janay Douglas’ 15-year-old daughter got stuck in a hallway when the school was locked down. Douglas said she received a call from her daughter letting her know she heard shots. “One of her friends busted through the door, he was shot in the hand, and then her and her friends just took off running. The phone disconnected,” Douglas said. “I was on my way.” Kuczka, the slain teacher, taught health at Central for 14 years and recently began coaching cross-country at Collegiate, her daughter said. “She was definitely looking forward to retirement though. She was close,” Abbey Kuczka said. Kuczka’s biography on the school website said she was the married mother of five and a grandmother of seven. She was an avid bike rider and was part of a 1979 national championship field hockey team at what is now Missouri State University. “I cannot imagine myself in any other career but teaching,” Kuczka wrote on the website. “In high school, I taught swimming lessons at the YMCA.
