Nowhereness

Dates: June 20, 2012 to July 14, 2012
Location: The Red Head Gallery
The Red Head Gallery presents Margie Kelks exhibition Nowhereness, a mixed media installation. Margie Kelks current work is concerned with issues of pain, rootlessness, and alienation, in relation to online and offline social networking sites. Her ceramic heads - their faces distorted, filled with despair and sometimes hope - are placed among models of disassembled computer components; they become components themselves, victimized or in control. The dialog that emerges veers between \'real,\' physical, and virtual ontologies; the pieces becomes sites of meditation. On one hand, for example, the elderly are swept aside in society\'s continuing abandonment of individuals deemed useless; on the other, the elderly may be empowered by social networking. We\'re living in a time of high-speed cultural change; Kelk\'s work asks us to slow down and see what damage we may have caused, what promises may yet be fulfilled. (Alan Sondheim)

Margie Kelk has been exhibiting her artwork in Canada since 2000. She was on the Board of the Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts (Toronto, Ontario) for eight years, and was Chair for six of them. Since 2009 she has been an active member of The Red Head Gallery (Toronto), and she is now gallery Chair. Her China-based books and drawings were represented by the Headbones Gallery in 2006-7, and she was a member of Gallery 1313 in Toronto, from 2003 until 2007. She has been showing in Canada, the United States and Europe. She has received prizes for several of her works, and has been awarded grants by the Ontario Arts Council. Margie is a graduate of Wellesley College, The Johns Hopkins University (PhD.), and the Toronto School of Art degree program.

Dates: June 9, 2012 to June 9, 2012
Location: The Green Door Cabaret at Lower Ossington Theatre
A cabaret evening that promises to be a funny, touching and candid glimpse of a 30-something starting over again. AGAIN.

Songs and stories featuring ballads (Dublin, and The Lies of Handsome Men); wistful songs in German and English from Sutherland Boal's specific area of expertise, the Weimar Republic; and two songs by the insanely talented and outrageously funny Ray Jessel, including I Think About Sex.

"Lindsay Sutherland Boal cuts a commanding presence and is obviously very comfortable in the cabaret repertoire as she purrs and sneers across the stage." Charlesbois Post

"Loach is a chameleon of the keyboard, playing brilliantly in so many different styles I sometimes feel she should be checked out for multiple personality disorder!" Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star

BASS CULTURE TORONTO Vol.9, JUNE 1st @ El Mocambo

Dates: June 1, 2012 to June 2, 2012
Location: el mocambo
So, April was pretty special.
Were glad we all got to share that.

...so much so....

Its time to throw down, cut that rug, and greet the sun all over again.

The BASS CULTURE collective is excited to announce the 9th installment of our communal celebration of creativity. So lets get to it: its time to reconnect in a deluge of breaks, beats and bass.

FAKE MONEY, NYC

the scene is familiar: youre walking down city streets when the bars a letting out, still wearing ray bans, still smoking your export a golds, and still looking for another party. its with acute awareness and heightened senses that you are absorbing the lights and the dewy smell of the early morning pavement, but youre craving the groove. Putting in your earbuds and pressing play, youre thrown into mid-sidewalk groove by the music traveling to your brain: FAKE MONEY.

Bottom out and stomp to FAKE MONEYs sub heavy pulse, or california 2-step to his electfunkronica. while youre getting sexy, FAKE MONEY is engaging your limbic system via frequency and vibration, and flooding your brain with sweet, sweet, dopamine.

HUGSNOTDRUGS, TORONTO
LU20 Records, 6N7 Music, Jexonex

Remember the warehouse rave? HUGSNOTDRUGS is the electronic memory of those drug-addled nights and daybreaks of slamming, swirling and spiraling to 150bpms. HUGSNOTDRUGS, the Toronto Trio, stay true to their roots by spinning a fever-dream confluence of dubstep, house, and jungle. With mixes that hollerback to the glory days of faux fur and lasers, we are going to suggest taurine, glucuronolactone or at least chocolate covered espresso beans as legit means of physically keeping up with HUGSNOTDRUGS

-----------------------------------------------

AQUATIC MIND, TORONTO

hyper cerebral yet equally as visceral, AQUATIC MIND summons melodic flow and groundswell sensation. entering at heart centre and radiating outwards, AQUATIC MINDs minimal house is infused with spheric bass and celestial highs that move the dancer beyond volition into oblivion.

http://soundcloud.com/aquaticmind
-----------------------------------------------
DBOOM, TORONTO, 11 pm

wise to the rhythmic dilation of heavy lows, DBOOM sends sound rolling up and down the sine wave of cutup and funked-out beats. DBOOM treats his tunes with a lightheart, but throws down ghettofunk and glitchhop that weighs a metric ton. With serious intention, oscillate wildly to DBOOMs love.

-----------------------------------------------
JERUS NAZDAQ, TORONTO, 1am

whether JERUS NAZDAQ is slamming down dubstep or techno house, the warmth of the southern, most tropical sun peaks its way through even the densest of beats and drops. Engage your emotional chlorophyll while you photosynthesize JERUS NAZDAQs sub bass tuplets, and wobble along with the LFO as you create fuel for your aerobic life on the dancefloor.

Social Choreography: Francisco-Fernando Granados, Igor Grubić and Emily Roysdon Curated by: Julia P

Dates: June 8, 2012 to July 21, 2012
Location: Gallery TPW
Opening Reception: Friday, June 8, 7-9 pm

Gallery TPW is pleased to present Social Choreography, a group exhibition curated by Julia Paoli. Works by Francisco-Fernando Granados (Canada), Igor Grubi (Croatia) and Emily Roysdon (USA) point to the intersection of choreography and politicized spaces in contemporary art. The exhibition aims to call attention to the dual meaning embedded in the term movement: at once referencing movement as a political ideology and movement of the body through time and space. Taken from cultural critic Andrew Hewitt, the shows title suggests that choreography is linked to organization and can intricately demonstrate and interrupt the ways people relate and interact with one another.
Granados presents a series of choreographed instructions that consider the political and performative possibilities of movement in public and private spaces. Grubis two-channel video juxtaposes graphic documentation of the first Gay Pride parades in Belgrade and Zagreb with dancers later responding to the events in the same locations. Roysdons photographic and video installations pursue an ongoing interest in representations of movement and the potential for corporeal gestures to convey shifting concepts of community and site. Together, the works address both the potential and the problems of representation developing out of a specific place and community, and moving into the space of the gallery. Reflecting on the relationship between action and documentation, lived bodies and drawn lines, Social Choreography at once participates in and updates the interest in how choreography and politics intersect.

Women's Health Education Forum

Dates: June 11, 2012 to June 11, 2012
Location: Toronto Botanical Garden
Women are invited to a free event to speak with Dr. Marla Shapiro, who specializes in womens health, and patient, Joan Boone, to learn about how women can recognize and proactively overpower the symptoms of Vaginal Atrophy and stop suffering in silence

WHY:
- Nearly half of Canadian women experiencing symptoms of vaginal atrophy wait six months or longer before seeing a healthcare professional.
- The symptoms of vaginal atrophy (including burning, itching, dryness, irritation and painful intercourse) prevent women from living their lives to the fullest. Eight in 10 (82%) post-menopausal women in Canada agree that vaginal atrophy would have a negative impact on various aspects of their life.
- Vaginal atrophy is a relatively unknown condition with only seven per cent of women correctly associating the symptoms of vaginal atrophy with the condition.
- Low dose local estrogen therapies can effectively treat this chronic condition.
- Women should be encouraged to talk to their doctors about vaginal atrophy and effective treatment of the underlying cause.

HORACIO SAPERE: Recent Work NY

Dates: June 6, 2012 to July 15, 2012
Location: Alison Milne Gallery
Elements of New York architecture transpire from a new body of work first observed in a Brooklyn studio occupied by Argentine-born, Mallorca-based artist Horacio Sapere. Raw canvases roughly cut and pinned to the wall have made their way to this Toronto gallery, somewhat reproducing the atmosphere found in the artist's studio. The Alison Milne Gallery presents paintings of well-balanced, vibrant palettes on canvas and paper, which are at once architectural and poetic in their abstract depiction of the mundane. Sapere's work has been exhibited internationally, throughout Europe and North and South America.
Gallery Hours are Monday - Wednesday by appointment, and Thursday - Sunday 12-6pm.

Bluebird TO

Dates: June 2, 2012 to June 2, 2012
Location: Burroughes Building
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BluebirdTO- A Food & Art thing brings over 1300 guests to view exhibits exploring food and art while showcasing local talent and collecting donations for The Daily Bread Food Bank.
TORONTO- Bluebird Art Show returns for its third year, and this time its aiming to raise 1500 lbs. of food.
On Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 10p.m., local artists will come together to showcase an exhibition that features the growing popularity of food art.
In keeping with the BluebirdTO's theme, food will be celebrated and displayed in a variety of sensational creative ways: visual art, graffiti's, photography, sculptures and live Food Art Exhibitions, etc. Musical entertainment will be provided by a series of local Toronto performers and DJs.
Bluebird is about the showcase of food as art, says Devan Rajkumar, Founder and Managing Director for Bluebird. While we usually celebrate food from a gastronomic perspective, were flipping the usual approach and looking at it from an artistic eye first.
Bluebird was created in 2010 to provide a forum for advancing and encouraging food artistry in the GTA while giving back to the underprivileged community in Toronto. Toronto's fastest growing and most creative name in Food Catering and Event Planning, FOOD DUDES has also come on board as this years premier sponsor and will provide a variety of mouth watering hors doeuvres and futuristic canaps for guests through out the evening.
Bluebird came to me as a way to explore the powerful visual and emotional effect that comes from looking at certain foods, Rajkumar states. Nostalgia, happiness, disgust, these are all emotions that can often come just from looking at a particular food or food product. We want to explore, demonstrate and showcase the impact of a foods look and how it shapes our behaviour and lifestyle all the while collecting donations the underprivileged in our community.
Created entirely as a non-profit generating event, Bluebirds mission is to push the creative boundaries of local artists and encourage a community of likeminded food art enthusiasts while collecting donations for the Daily Bread Food Bank. Cost of admission is simply a minimum of two or more non- perishable food items; whatever generosity is the extent of capability. All are welcome.
Bluebird runs from 5pm to 10pm at the Burroughes Building located at 639 Queen Street West on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Admission fee is a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank. Enthusiasts of all ages are welcome.
Founded by Chef Devan Rajkumar in 2010, Bluebird is an annual event showcasing the unique & interesting expressions of food art while collecting donations for Torontos underprivileged communities. Since its inception, BlueBirdTO has supported over one hundred local artists and collected and donated over 1000lbs of food to the Daily Bread Food Bank.
