Gamercamp

Date: November 21, 2009
Location: Lower Ossington Theatre
Gamercamp celebrates the artistry, history, and creativity behind the games that kept you up all night and well into the next day. Get inspired by fresh ideas from passionate, knowledgable speakers, an open demo stage for Toronto's best and up-and-coming, and an exhibition from Canada's first arcade museum.

We started Gamercamp out of an obsession for video games and a belief that the the journey to how games are made is as fun as the games themselves. For example, we dig retro games not only in a nostalgic sense but also how they are applicable to game development today. New classics like Shadow Complex and platforms like the iPhone are taking things back to priority one: smart, stream-lined design to produce addictive, can't-get-enough fun games.

So if you begged with tears to get an NES, thought quarters were the only coin worth keeping, or spent entire weekends sketching out side-scroller levels, join us for a day for the love of game.

Get your tickets online now, only $15. Or $20 at the door.

If you have any questions or inquiries, drop an email to mark@gamercamp.ca.

The World Laughter Games

Date: November 21, 2009
Location: Bloor Cinema
TORONTO COULD GET THE WORLD LAUGHTER GAMES

GAME DEMO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY NOV 21 AT THE BLOOR CINEMA

BEFORE THE HILARIOUS FILM LAUGHOLOGY

Toronto could be the home of an international laughing skills competition - potentially the Olympics of Laughter.

The Just for Laughs Festival is looking at a World Laughter Games event in Toronto, depending on the upcoming demonstration of the games this Saturday November 21.

Competitive laughter games will be demoed at this Saturdays screening of Laughology - a documentary about the contagiousness of laughter, featuring the man with the most contagious laugh on earth. Before the screening there will be demonstrations of the games. Champion laughers will compete and some audience members will be invited to compete on the spot.
Director of Laughology, Albert Nerenberg, got the game idea while traveling the world working on the documentary. The sudden rise in laughter exercise techniques have created new laughter games, which when exercised, improve health, fitness and mood.

It could be significant, says Nerenberg. Not only do laughter games promote health, immunity and good humor, theyre funny, because laughter is contagious.

Nerenberg demoed one of the games, the Laugh Off at this years Idea City and it brought down the house.

The Laugh Off is a game where two contestants go head-to-head laughing at each other. The person who makes the other person seem funnier wins. This game can be quite extreme. People turn red, split their pants, and fall off the stage. says current Canadian Champion Victoria Danyluk.

There are also individual competitions, like the Most Contagious Laugh the person who gets the most laughs out of an audience simply by laughing. And the Evil Villain Laugh made famous by Hollywood star Mike Myers.

Laughter competitions are new and different from comedy competitions. There have been small laughter competitions in India and Thailand, but no one has tried to create an international competition, although one is certainly coming.

The Just for Laughs festival is interested in the event, says Nerenberg. Because the idea is so new, they want to see how it will work.

Trailer for Laughology is here:

The Torture Memos CD Release + The Cephalopodae Dance Suite + Ronley Teper

Date: December 11, 2009
Location: the Tranzac (292 Brunswick Ave., Toronto, Ontario)
--------------
FRIDAY DECEMBER 11 8:00pm
@ THE TRANZAC (292 Brunswick Ave., Toronto)
$10 / $15 with CD (with a percentage of the sale of every CD going to support the American Civil Liberties Union)

THE PARKDALE REVOLUTIONARY ORCHESTRA'S
'THE TORTURE MEMOS' CD Release Concert

ON THE BILL:
The Torture Memos + Cephalopodae Dance Suite + a special guest performance by Ronley Teper and Her Lipliners.
--------------

THE TORTURE MEMOS

The Parkdale Revolutionary Orchestra's musical treatment of the Torture Memos (the documents produced justify barbaric torture techniques that shocked the world when the US government made them public earlier this year) takes the most revealing elements of the text and lets them speak for themselves - from the finer points of waterboarding to why it's reasonable to commit torture in self defense.

By setting these documents to music the voice of their principal author, John Yoo, is transformed from a bureaucratic abstraction to a real presence. And what he has to say takes on new and unexpected meanings: from beneath the coldness of the original text layers of fear, anger, and deeply-buried remorse emerge. The banality of evil sings its heart out.

The "lyrics" and some audio from the recording are here: http://www.parkdalerevolutionaryorchestra.com/tm/torturememos.html

THE CEPHALOPODAE DANCE SUITE
a ballet about the spiritual development of squids

This deeply moving story follows the life of a squid: from its birth and infancy in the gentle currents of the deep, to its innocent joy in exploring the beauty of its environment, to the tragic moment when its squid sister is lured into the cruel tentacles of a cult and converted into a box of Captain Highliner battered calamari as a ritual sacrifice to Cthulhu - a heart-rending event that confronts the squid with the senseless injustice of existence and the necessity of finding meaning in its own squidividuality.

RONLEY TEPER AND HER LIPLINERS

Ronley Teper, a performance artist turned musician, has collaborated with the who's who of the Canadian independent music scene to produce a body of music that listeners constantly compare to Tom Waits and Mary Margaret O'Hara. Her new EP Ronley Teper's Lipliners grew out of twenty short musical monologues that were publicly workshopped during twenty improvised shows featuring a revolving door of some of Canada's finest musicians.

"If Joanna Newsom gave birth to Tom Waits' illegitimate daughter and then refused to breastfeed her, the girl might grow up sounding a lot like Toronto's Ronley Teper" - BlogTO

Date: November 28, 2009
Location: Maroli Restaurant
Malabari Food Festival 2009

With the inaugural food festival in 2008 becoming a huge success ,we have planned for the 2nd Malabar Food Festival for the year 2009 Hosted by Maroli Restaurant . The Malabar region of India lies along the southwest coast of the Indian peninsula and forms the northern part of the present-day Indian state of Kerala. Maroli holds the distinction of being the only Malabari (Kerala)restaurant in Toronto.
On November 28th & 29 th, Maroli will showcase savoury items from Malabar and allow visitors to taste unique Malabar cuisine, which has been influenced by Dutch, British, French, Portuguese and Arab culinary arts from various regimes in the 17th through 20th century.

Malabar is noted for its variety of pancakes and steamed rice cakes, biryani made of mutton, chicken, egg and fish. Arikadaka, a concoction of rice , fennel and coconut filled in mussels and steamed are a Malabari gem . Meen moilee (a Greenish yellow fish curry ), meen mulligattathu (a fiery Sardine Curry ), and peera pattichathu (a dry fish dish of grated coconut),Oyster stewed in Coconut sauce or a Pan Fried Sardine are also staples of a Malabari diet. olath erachi (fried mutton or beef are amongst the more popular meat items in the region. Another interesting feature is the abundant use of coconut, coconut oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and coconut milk.

Exotic dishes at the event include Pepper fried Bulls testicles , Oyster stew , Pan Fried Sardines, Malabar Fish Biriyani ,Fish Moilee , Appam, Shrimp Malabari ,Squid Thoran, Kallumakai Fry(Mussels) ,Kappa(Cassava) ,Nei Choru, , Chemeen curry(Shrimps) and Crab Curry .
