If you’re interested in creating a built-in shelf for your shed, I came up with a design for a shelf that fits in-between the studs. I hope you can utilize this technique on your own to build a shelf designed for lighter objects.

You can also reinforce the shelf for heavier objects. Don’t miss my detailed video below that shows you everything from soup to nuts!

Key Takeaways

Preparing the shelf involves cutting a piece of T-111 to size and marking areas for the studs.

Cleats are installed to support the shelf and ensure it sits level.

The shelf is secured in place after ensuring all components fit and align correctly.

I’m in my shed today, and my project is to add a shelf just above my workbench, positioned within the studs. I’ve already cut a piece of T-111 to the needed length and marked areas where I’ll cut for the studs. This shelf is designed to fit flush against the wall once these cuts are made.

I’m using a 40-inch piece of 2×4 to ensure the shelf sits level. After securing the cleats on each side of the stud, these will support the shelf. I’ll start by cutting out the rectangles needed for the shelf to fit snugly, then secure the cleats using a nail gun, ensuring everything aligns perfectly before finalizing the installation.

YouTube Video – Shed Shelving | DIY Built In Shelf

Preparing the Workshop Area

Setting up the workshop for this project involves several key steps. First, ensure that the workspace around the workbench is clear to allow for easy movement and access to tools. Safety is essential, so make sure you have safety glasses, ear protection, and gloves readily available.

To begin, gather all the necessary materials: a piece of T-111, a 40-inch 2×4, cleats, a brad nailer with nails, and a saw. Ensure that your tools are in good working order.

Next, secure the T-111 on a sawhorse outside to make the required cuts. This will help the piece fit snugly between the studs once inside. After cutting, take the piece inside to test the fit and make any additional adjustments.

Once the T-111 fits correctly, it’s time to attach the cleats. Use a 40-inch 2×4 as a guide to ensure that the cleats are at the correct height. Clamp the 2×4 in place to keep it steady.

Secure the cleats using a brad nailer. Ensure all cleats are fastened at the same height to create a level surface for the shelf. See images further down for a pictorial view.

Checking for level is important for a professional finish. Using a level, verify that the cleats and shelf are even. Make any necessary adjustments before securing the shelf permanently.

Once satisfied with the fit and level of the shelf, secure it by attaching it to the cleats with brad nails. This will create a stable and secure shelf above your workbench, perfect for storing tools and materials.

Trimming the Shelf to Fit

Ensuring Accurate Stud Cut-Outs

I marked the areas on the T-111 panel for the stud cut-outs. These notches will allow the shelf to fit securely into the wall studs, creating a seamless appearance above my workbench.

Fixing T-111 for Precise Trimming

I positioned the T-111 on a sawhorse to stabilize it for cutting. Using clamps ensured that the panel stayed in place while I worked with the jigsaw.

Using a Jigsaw to Make the Cuts

With the T-111 secured, I used my jigsaw to make precise cuts for the stud notches and trimmed an additional 1.5 inches from the end to accommodate the corner stud. This allows the shelf to fit snugly and align perfectly with the wall.

Installing the Shelf

Initial Dry Fit

First, I placed the cut piece of T-111 onto a sawhorse outside for easy cutting. I cut out the necessary rectangles to fit around the studs using a jigsaw. This initial dry fit showed that the piece fits snugly within the shed studs, but it was slightly higher than desired. To correct this, I marked and cut an additional 1.5 inches from one end to accommodate the corner stud and ensure a flush fit.

Adjustment for Corner Stud

After discovering the corner stud, I made a precise cut of 1.5 inches to ensure that the shelf would fit correctly. I then tested the fit and confirmed that the piece was now snug in the corner. This careful adjustment ensured that the shelf would align properly with the studs once installed.

Ensuring a Snug Fit

To ensure the shelf would be secure, I used a 2×4 as a spacer and secured it with a clamp for accuracy. I then attached cleats to the shed wall, ensuring they were at the correct height. These cleats, set three inches high, supported the shelf. I used a brad nailer to fasten the cleats to the studs, adding screws for additional stability where necessary. Once all cleats were in place, I laid the shelf on top and secured it with more brad nails to complete the installation.

To ensure the perfect height for the cleats, I used a 40-inch 2×4 as a spacer. First, I clamped the 2×4 next to the stud where I’d be working and made sure it was level. With the spacer in place, I knew exactly where to position the cleats for a consistent height across the shelf.

Attaching Cleats with a Nail Gun

</picture>

Attaching Cleats with Nail Gun

Next, I secured the cleats using a brad nailer. These cleats, each three inches high, would support the shelf. I started at one end, nailing two cleats together for extra support, and then worked my way down, nailing single cleats to either side of each stud. The brad nailer made the job quick and efficient.

Adding Double Cleats at the Ends

At the ends of the shelf, I doubled up the cleats for added strength. This meant placing two cleats side by side at each end of the shelf. This extra reinforcement helps ensure that the shelf remains stable and can bear extra weight.

Handling Stud Spacing Issues

I encountered some challenges where the studs were spaced too closely. In these cases, I had to angle the nail gun and occasionally leave nails slightly exposed before hammering them flat. Adjusting the cleats to account for these spacing issues ensured a snug fit and even support along the entire length of the shelf.

Completing the Shelf Installation

Positioning the Shelf on Supports

I carefully aligned the shelf onto the cleats to ensure it fit snugly into the spaces I had cut for it. Checking for accuracy was crucial to make sure the shelf would rest level and flush against the wall. Once everything was positioned correctly, I was ready to proceed with securing the shelf.

Verifying Level and Fastening Shelf

To confirm the shelf’s level, I placed a level tool on it and checked the bubble to ensure it was centered. Using my brad nailer, I then affixed the shelf to the cleats at multiple points along its length. This step was essential to ensure the shelf would remain stable and provide a reliable surface for storage.

Extra Fastening and Finishing Touches

For added stability, I reinforced some areas by adding extra nails or screws. Additionally, I framed out sections around the shelf for a more polished look. Any remaining gaps or unfinished areas were addressed to ensure the finished product was neat and secure.

Final DIY Built In Shelf – Front View

Here’s a look at my shed shelving project loaded up. Please be aware, this should not be used to hold heavy items and is perfect for lighter items such as boxes of screws, electrical tape, small tools, tape measures, etc.

Are looking for firewood cover ideas for your woodpile? This article will introduce Xpose Safety polyethylene tarps as a great option for a cover for firewood. I use them and I love them!

In a previous video (seen below), I showed you how to securely attach a tarp using fender washers and screws, but I found that I had to replace my tarps every year due to degradation of the tarp and water seeping into the wood.

That’s why I decided to invest in heavy duty multipurpose tarps that are 16 mil thick and made of premium heavy duty fabric.

In this article, I’ll take you through the unboxing of the Xpose Safety multipurpose super heavy duty brown polyethylene tarp, show you how to affix it to the woodpile using fender washers and screws, and discuss the benefits of upgrading to heavy duty tarps. So, let’s get started!

Key Takeaways

Upgrading to heavy duty tarps can provide superior protection against water, UV rays, and all-season elements.

Using fender washers and screws can securely attach heavy duty tarps to woodpiles.

Heavy duty tarps with grommets every two feet or less can help prevent tearing and provide added security against high winds.

Background on Tarp Usage

Xpose Safety Polyethylene Tarps

Initial Tarp Securing Method

Four years ago, I made a video showing how to secure a tarp onto a woodpile using fender washers with a screw. This method worked well, but every year I had to change my tarps, probably because I bought cheap ones.

These tarps were made of a woven material that degraded within one season, allowing water to get down into the wood.

Issues with Cheap Tarps

Cheap tarps may appear waterproof at first, but over time they degrade and become less effective. This degradation can lead to water getting into the wood and causing damage. In my experience, cheap tarps last only one season.

To avoid this issue, I invested in heavy-duty multipurpose tarps that are 16 mil thick. These tarps are made of premium heavy-duty fabric and are reinforced from edge to edge with polyrope sewn into the hem for ultimate protection against rips and fraying.

They are also rain, UV, and all-season protection, waterproof, rust and mildew-resistant, and won’t deform or shrink.

In conclusion, using heavy-duty tarps is a more effective solution than using cheap tarps. It is important to invest in high-quality tarps to protect your woodpile from damage caused by water and other elements.

Upgrade to Heavy Duty Xpose Safety Tarps

Unboxing Xpose Safety Tarps

I recently purchased Xpose Safety multipurpose heavy duty tarps and I am excited to share my experience with you. The tarps came in a box and I purchased two of them. The tarps are brown in color, which I personally prefer, and they are 4 feet wide by 20 feet long.

The manufacturer claims that these tarps are ideal for construction, camping, cars and trucks, RVs, boats, and more. They can even be used for covering firewood.

The tarps are made of a 16 by 16 weave premium heavy duty fabric that is waterproof, rust and mildew-resistant, and won’t deform or shrink. The grommets are placed about a foot and a half apart, which is perfect for my purposes.

The edges and hem are reinforced with polyrope sewn into the hem for ultimate protection against rips and fraying. These tarps are designed to provide rain, UV, and all-season protection.

Features of the New Xpose Safety Polyethylene Tarps

The heavy duty tarps that I purchased are significantly thicker than the ones I used to buy. The old ones were probably less than 5 or 4 mil thick, while the new ones are 16 mil thick.

The heavy duty tarps are made of a woven material that is much more durable than the old ones. The corners of the tarps are reinforced with copper grommets and plastic to prevent any ripping from occurring.

The grommets on the new tarps are made of hard aluminum, which is much stronger than the plastic grommets on the old tarps. The grommets are placed closer together on the new tarps, which makes it easier to secure the tarps to the woodpile.

The tarps are also much heavier than the old ones, which makes them more resistant to high winds.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase of the Xpose Safety multipurpose heavy duty tarps. They are significantly more durable than the old ones I used to buy and I am confident that they will last me for several seasons.

If you are in the market for new tarps, I highly recommend giving these a try.

Measuring Grommet Distance

As seen in the youTube video above, I recently purchased heavy duty multipurpose tarps for my woodpile, and I am impressed with their quality. The manufacturer, Xpose Safety, claims that these tarps are 16 mil thick and have grommets for superior performance. I wanted to verify this claim, so I measured the distance between the grommets.

Using a measuring tape, I found that the distance between one grommet to the other is 20 inches, which is a little more than a foot and a half. This distance is good for my purposes because I can secure my firewood at each grommet, which is perfect. It also prevents any ripping from occurring.

Comparing Tarp Thickness

Before purchasing these heavy duty tarps, I used to buy cheap ones every year. However, I noticed that they degrade within one season, and the water ends up getting down into the wood. These cheap tarps were probably less than four or five mil thick.

The Xpose multipurpose heavy duty tarps that I recently purchased are 16 mil thick, and they are made of a woven material that is waterproof, rust and mildew-resistant, and won’t deform or shrink. They are also reinforced from edge to edge with polyrope sewn into the hem for ultimate protection against rips and fraying.

After unboxing and examining the tarps, I can confidently say that they are much more heavy duty than what I am used to when it comes to tarps. They have a copper grommet and some plastic around it to prevent any ripping from occurring. The corners are also reinforced.

Overall, I am impressed with the quality of these heavy duty tarps, and I believe that they will last me a few seasons. I hope that this demonstration has been helpful in showing you the benefits of investing in heavy duty tarps for your outdoor needs.

Installation Process

Removing Old Tarps

First, I removed all of the old tarps from my woodpile. I kept one fender washer with a screw to show how to affix the new tarp onto the woodpile.

Positioning the New Tarp

I purchased a heavy-duty multipurpose tarp that is 4 feet wide by 20 feet long. I chose brown because it looks good on top of the woodpile, and my wife prefers it.

I overlapped the seam by a couple of feet and cut the excess off at the end. I positioned the tarp to be slightly over each side of the woodpile, leaving the whole woodpile available for drying purposes.

Securing with Fender Washers

I used fender washers with screws to secure the new tarp onto the woodpile. I used a portable drill to go into the middle of each grommet. The grommets are about 16 to 20 inches apart, and there are grommets every less than every two feet.

I overlapped at the seam by a couple of feet. I secured the tarp at every couple of grommets, sometimes each one of them. I went overboard, but I wanted to be sure that the tarp wouldn’t come off even in a fifty mile per hour wind.

Final Adjustments and Expectations

Cutting Excess Tarps

Now that I have secured the heavy-duty multipurpose tarps to my woodpile, I noticed that the second tarp is a bit longer than I need it to be. As such, I plan on cutting off the excess to ensure that it does not hang over the woodpile and interfere with the drying process.

Project Completion

After securing the tarps to the woodpile using the fender washers and screws, I am confident that my firewood will be protected from rain, UV, and other elements. The heavy-duty tarps are 16 mil thick and have reinforced edges and hems, making them resistant to rips and fraying.

Additionally, the grommets are made of a hard aluminum material, which provides superior performance compared to plastic grommets.

I am pleased with my purchase of the Xpose multipurpose heavy-duty tarps and believe that they will last me for several seasons. I am excited to see how they hold up against high winds and rain, which is expected in the coming days.

Overall, I am satisfied with the final product and hope that this video has been helpful to those looking for a reliable way to secure tarps to their woodpile. Don’t forget to like and subscribe for more DIY videos!

Firewood Cover Ideas using Xpose Safety Tarps – A Recap

Anticipated Performance

Based on the specs provided by the manufacturer, I anticipate that these heavy duty tarps will last me for multiple seasons. The 16 mil thickness and reinforced edges and hem should provide superior protection against rips and fraying. Additionally, the grommets spaced less than two feet apart allow for secure attachment to the woodpile, even in high winds.

Overall, I’m happy with my purchase of the Xpose Safety multipurpose heavy duty tarps and would recommend them to anyone in need of durable and reliable tarps for their outdoor needs.

Are you looking for a rock-solid barbell storage rack? This article will delve into the Yes4All barbell storage rack in detail. It will touch on the features as well as a video review and an unboxing and assembly video.

I’ve been using the Yes4All wall mounted barbell hanger for over two years now in my shed gym. I’ve had a great experience with their dumbbell handles, which led me to purchase the storage rack in April 2021.

At the time of purchase I did an unboxing and assembly video detailing the packaging it came in and installing it in my shed gym.

With this unique barbell holder, I can easily store my three different barbells, including my curl bar and two 7 foot Olympic bars, all while keeping my workout space neat and organized.

During the installation process, I found the hardware to be sturdy, made from 7 gauge steel, and featuring a protective UHMW plastic layer to prevent damage to the knurling on my barbells. I also appreciate how the storage rack accommodates my shed’s 16-inch on-center stud spacing. It’s not only a practical and useful addition to my gym but also reasonably priced on Amazon.

Key Takeaways

The Yes4All wall mounted barbell holder rack provides an efficient way to store barbells neatly and safely.

Sturdy construction and protective plastic layer help preserve the quality of your barbells.

Proper installation ensures compatibility with different barbell types and your existing wall structure.

Yes4All Barbell Storage Rack YouTube Review

I have been using Yes4All products for quite some time now. Their dumbbell handles are part of my routine, and I have been satisfied with their performance in my shed gym. This led me to purchase their wall-mounted barbell storage rack back in April 2021.

Below is a video review I made of my Yes4All Dumbbell Handles. You may want to check it out if you are in the market for quality dumbbell handles and have a limited amount of space in your home gym. These handles allow me to build the dumbbells I need at the time that I need them for a particular workout such as biceps or chest.

Since I have been using these products for a while, I have accumulated quite a bit of experience with them. They appear to be durable and well-constructed. The barbell rack, in particular, is made from 7 gauge steel and comes with a UHMW plastic layer that helps protect the knurling on your barbell from wear and damage over time.

Yes4All Barbell Wall Mount is a Solid Home Gym Investment

Over the past two years, I haven’t experienced any issues using the storage rack. It is an excellent investment for a home gym, especially if you have limited space and want a place to store your barbells securely. The rack can hold different types of bars comfortably, including curl bars and 7-foot Olympic bars.

In terms of installation, the storage rack comes with four hex-headed lag screws that are meant to go into the center of your wall studs. I found it fairly straightforward to assemble and mount onto the wall in my shed gym, though you might need a stud finder if your walls are covered.

If the spacing doesn’t work for your specific bars, you could add blocking to adjust the distance, but I didn’t have any issues with fitting my bars comfortably.

It’s also important to consider the height of the rack before installing it. I made sure to mount it at a height that makes it easy for me to take out and put back the bars, since lifting a bar that is too high can be difficult, especially as we get older.

In short, my experience with the Yes4All wall-mounted barbell hanger rack has been very positive. The effectiveness, durability, and practicality make it an ideal choice for my home gym, and the price point is quite reasonable as well. If you are considering a similar setup, I highly recommend giving Yes4All products a try.

Yes4All Barbell Holder Installation Details

Yes4All Barbell Storage Rack Unboxing and Assembly YouTube Video

In April 2021, I purchased the Yes4All wall mounted barbell holder and created an unboxing and assembly video. The storage rack comes with two pieces, which are sold as a pair on Amazon. I use this rack to store three different barbells: a curl bar and two 7-foot Olympic bars.

Wall Requirements and Considerations

The storage rack is installed on wall studs with a standard 16-inch spacing, which is typical for most structures. If your walls are already covered, you’ll need to use a stud finder to locate the centers of the studs.

For those with exposed walls like mine, measuring the distance between the studs is easier. If the stud spacing doesn’t work for your particular equipment, you may need to add some blocking. I use a 2×3 blocking to install the rack on my wall.

Be sure to check your barbell’s dimensions and make sure the distance between the stops or collars is appropriate for your equipment.

Perhaps the most important feature of this storage rack is the UHMW plastic layer. This layer is about 1/4-inch thick and covers the entire contact surface, providing protection for your barbells.

It is slightly raised, which allows the bar to rest on the plastic without touching the metal and preventing wear or scratches on the knurling. The knurling is the textured area on a barbell or a dumbbell. Depending on the bar or barbell, you could have deep or shallow knurling. This plastic layer is attached to the metal with several fasteners.

When installing the storage rack, be mindful of the height you choose. As you age, it may become more difficult to pick up a bar that’s placed too high. Even with a bar with no weights on it, it is possible you could tweak your back trying to lift it off the wall at an unsafe height.

I made sure to install my rack at a height that’s comfortable for me to remove and replace the barbells. By keeping the barbells at a suitable height, you’ll be protecting not only your equipment but also yourself from strain or injury.

Remember to measure your equipment and wall spacing before installation to ensure that your wall mounted weight bar holder will fit properly. Once installed, it should provide a secure storage solution for your barbells, keeping your space organized and clutter-free.

Yes4All Barbell Hanger Bar Compatibility

EZ Curl Bar

My Body Solid EZ curl bar fits perfectly within the 32″ distance between the center of one stud to the center of the other. If it didn’t work properly, and you have exposed walls like mine, you might have to add some blocking.

I have insulation, so you could actually add a 2X3 blocking and affix the hardware to the blocking if needed for this to fit properly. This all depends on the locations of the stops or collars on your bar where the plates rest up against.

As mentioned previously, keep in mind that before installing the barbell storage rack, make sure you don’t put these too high, as it’s more difficult to pick up a bar when it’s higher up as opposed to down closer to your waist. My curl bar is at a perfect height for me to take it off the rack comfortably, which is something to consider when installing the hardware.

7 Foot Olympic Bars

As for fitting 7-foot Olympic bars, there were no issues at all with the racks accommodating them, as there is so much space in between the stops or collars that 32″ on center is perfect for the 7′ bars.

Due to the long length of the Olympic bar you could even space the hardware out another stud if need be. Placing the other Olympic bar on the rack was also an easy process, and it didn’t require any alterations or adjustments for a secure fit.

In general, this storage rack is an excellent solution for organizing both curl bars and 7-foot Olympic bars, taking into account the appropriate height and background considerations for your specific space. It keeps your barbells out of the way and maintains their condition without wearing down the knurling.

UHMW Protective Plastic Layer on Weight Bar Holder

In my experience using the Yes4All wall mounted barbell storage rack, one of the standout features is the protective plastic layer. This UHMW or Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene plastic layer is about 1/4″ thick, and it covers the entire surface where the barbell comes into contact with the rack. It is slightly raised, ensuring that the bar sits on the plastic rather than the metal.

The addition of this plastic layer is important because it helps protect the knurling – the stippled area on a barbell – from being scratched or worn down over time. The plastic layer is firmly attached to the metal using metal hex-headed brads or similar fasteners, ensuring that it remains in place while effectively protecting the barbell.

The importance of the plastic layer in preserving the knurling can’t be overstated. After using this storage rack for over two years, there have been no issues with the plastic wearing down, and the knurling on my bars remains in excellent condition.

If you’re considering a storage solution for your barbells, the protective plastic layer on the Yes4All storage rack is a feature worth noting. It not only protects your investment in your barbells but ensures they remain in top condition for the long term.

Weight Barbell Holder Installation Tips

Positioning Height

When installing the storage rack, it’s crucial to consider the height at which you’ll place the racks on your wall. As we grow older, it can become increasingly difficult to lift the bars from a higher position. You should make sure that the height of your curl bar and Olympic bars is just right so that you can easily access them.

Blocking Considerations

If the 32-inch distance between the center of the studs on your wall does not fit the rack properly, you might need to add some blocking. If your walls are exposed like mine, you can add a 2×3 blocking and affix the hardware to the blocking instead. Adding blocking can help accommodate your curl bar or other equipment without issue.

Make sure to take measurements of your bars and the distance between the stops or collars beforehand. Installing the racks at the proper spacing will prevent any problems with fitting your equipment; for example, the 32-inch on-center studs work perfectly for 7-foot Olympic bars.

Lastly, ensure that your installation provides ample space above any other gym equipment, like a dumbbell rack. The horizontal storage rack should serve its purpose well without interfering with other gym equipment setups.

Wall Mounted Barbell Rack Review and Pricing

I purchased the Yes4All wall mounted barbell hanger in April 2021 and it has been a great addition to my shed gym. The storage rack comes with two pieces, and they can easily be mounted on standard 16-inch on-center wall studs if you have exposed walls. The construction is sturdy, made with 7-gauge steel, which is fairly heavy.

One standout feature of this storage rack is the presence of a UHMW plastic layer which is roughly 1/4″ thick. This plastic layer is raised slightly and covers the metal portion, designed to protect your barbells from scratches and damage to the knurling. It’s important to think about the placement of your storage rack before installing it. I have found that keeping the rack at a comfortable height for easy access to the barbells is key as you grow older.

The Yes4All storage rack can accommodate various types of barbells, including my curl bar and two 7-foot Olympic bars. The distance between the center of the studs works perfectly for all my bars, but you may need to add some blocking depending on your specific bar’s dimensions.

Currently, this storage rack is priced on Amazon at $31.15 for a pair. If you need additional racks, a set of four costs $59.99. While I’m using the horizontal storage rack, some people might prefer vertical storage racks depending on their space constraints.

I’ve been using this storage rack for over two years now without any issues. The plastic hasn’t worn down, and my barbells are still in great shape. I highly recommend the Yes4All wall mounted barbell rack for keeping your gym organized and protecting your equipment.

Recap – Horizontal Barbell Storage Rack Review

After using the Yes4All wall mounted barbell storage rack for over two years, I can confidently say that it has been a great addition to my shed gym. Not only does it save space by keeping the barbells out of the way, but its design also helps to protect the knurling on my bars.

The 7-gauge steel construction is sturdy, and the UHMW plastic layer on the rack protects the barbells from scratches, ensuring they maintain their good condition. With a capacity to store multiple barbells, it easily fits my curl bar and two 7-foot Olympic bars.

During installation, it’s important to consider the height at which you mount the storage rack, as it becomes harder to pick up the bar further from waist level. For me, the positioning of the rack over my dumbbell rack is perfect, while others might need additional support like a 2×3 blocking to fit the barbell properly.

The Yes4All wall mounted barbell rack is currently available on Amazon, starting at $31.15 for a pair and $59.99 for a set of four. Links for these products as well as my unboxing and assembly video can be found in the description of the Yes4All barbell holder review video.

In comparison to vertical storage racks, the horizontal storage rack has been ideally suited for my shed gym due to the fact I have limited height in my shed. So, if you’re looking for a reliable and efficient way to store your barbells horizontally, I highly recommend giving the Yes4All wall mounted barbell storage rack a try!

Have you had issues with squirrels or other small animals gnawing your birdhouse opening to store their food? Well, this article will show you in detail how to make a birdhouse squirrel proof with predator guards.

What is a Bird House Predator Guard ?

A birdhouse predator guard you say? Yes, these are small metal guards that are utilized to prevent a squirrel from gnawing out the existing hole to the birdhouse.

They work perfectly if you’re looking to create a squirrel proof bird house.

You can buy specific guards such as a bluebird house predator guard or you can purchase predator guards that are built specifically for chickadees which tend to have a smaller hole in the guard.

A squirrel will tend to gnaw at the openings of birdhouses in the fall in preparation for the cold winter days.

Sometimes a squirrel might just be looking for seeds that a bird may have stored in the birdhouse or maybe the squirrel is looking for shelter in which to store nesting material. From my experience the only time I have seen a squirrel gnaw at the opening of a birdhouse is this past fall.

Two out of the three birdhouses that I own had nothing in them when I attempted to clean them out this spring. One of them was full of grass that resembled what you would find deposited by a bird.

But I know that the grasses in this birdhouse were placed in there by a grey squirrel because no birds had nested in there over the spring and summer.

Steps to Make a Birdhouse Squirrel Proof

Identify the Predator Guard that will be the right size for the bird that will be using the birdhouse.

Acquire high quality predator guards – one for each birdhouse that you own.

Remove each birdhouse one by one from the tree or pole upon which it is attached.

Center the predator guard over the existing birdhouse opening whether or not it has already been gnawed by a squirrel.

Utilizing an awl, insert the awl into each of the 4 holes of the metal predator guard marking the location of where the screws will be inserted. This will help to prevent against splitting the wood when inserting the screws and will also allow you to easily insert the screws.

Utilizing either a manual screwdriver or a cordless drill, insert each screw in their perspective hole and snug them down.

Return each squirrel proof bird house to their original locations.

You have now successfully installed a birdhouse predator guard making your birdhouse squirrel proof.

Bluebird House Predator Guard

The guards are made of metal which should be hard enough to prevent a squirrel from gnawing on the birdhouse opening making it larger. The model seen below is made out of alloy and it is specifically made for a birdhouse that caters to bluebirds.

How to Make a Birdhouse Squirrel Proof with Predator Guards Summary

Creating a squirrel proof bird house isn’t very difficult. This article, images, and video has touched on installing a bluebird house predator guard and a birdhouse predator guard for chickadees.

You just have to purchase the proper metal predator guards for the species that will be using the birdhouse. If you also have the same problem I had, I hope you also implement this solution and your birds will be very happy you did!

Have you had trouble breathing from one or both of your nostrils? This article will delve into my septoplasty before and after experience and procedure I underwent to resolve my breathing problems and, as an added bonus, I also ended up with a much straighter nose. Read on for many more details.

For most of my life I have had trouble breathing out of my right nostril. A few years ago I decided to do something about it. My septoplasty before and after breathing experience has been remarkable to say the least. I can honestly say that septoplasty changed my life for the better!

I can now not only breathe out of both nostrils but a bonus byproduct of my deviated septum surgery before and after was that my nose ended up much straighter as a result as you can see from the septoplasty before after images above.

Please note that any suggestions or advice given in this article are solely based on my experience with my septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery. You should consult your doctor on any medical questions you may have about anything related to the surgery.

Septoplasty Before and After YouTube Video

Thinking ahead, I made it a point to make a short youTube video detailing my deviated septum before and after adventure so that others could see whether or not my nose had actually changed in appearance.

My wife and others close to me certainly noticed that it had and, to be honest, that was an added bonus.

You can check out the video below but I hope you read the rest of this article for much more information about preparing for the surgery, the day of the surgery, and recovering from septoplasty surgery.

Click here to watch the video or on the image or caption below the image.

Why I Chose Septoplasty Surgery

At the age of 61 years old I was tired of being able to breathe from only one of my nostrils for as long as I could remember. You know, sometimes in life you put up with things but you wonder why you really did when you eventually find a resolution.

That’s how I feel about my septoplasty before and after ordeal. It was something I should have done a lot sooner and I certainly would recommend to anyone else who has issues breathing that they should consider the surgery sooner than later.

So during one of my annual physicals I asked my primary doctor about my breathing. He did a quick examination and it appeared to him that I had a deviated septum. Ironically, he had septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery a number of years ago.

So he was able to recommend the same otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist, also called ENT) that he used.

Needless to say, going into the surgery, it gave me a warm and fuzzy that I was being worked on by an ENT who also performed the same surgery on my primary physician. I felt at ease.

What is a Deviated Septum?

A deviated septum is where the nasal septum, which is essentially the cartilage and bone that divides the nose in half, is crooked. As a result, this condition makes breathing difficult from one or both nostrils. A deviated septum can also cause the turbinates to become compressed.

What are Turbinates?

Turbinates are inside your nose and they are fleshy structures which, when healthy, will regulate temperature and moisture within the nose. If they become enlarged or swollen they can cause blockage in the nasal cavity leading to breathing issues.

Septoplasty Before After Images

Here are my before and after images. Do you see a difference in my nose?

</picture>

AFTER

Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction Surgery

Septoplasty surgery is a surgical procedure which straightens the cartilage and bone which divides the two nostrils (also known as the septum). As a matter of course, since the ENT is already straightening the septum, a turbinate reduction procedure may also be initiated.

The turbinate reduction procedure will reduce the enlarged turbinates and in combination with the straightening of the septum should lead to increased air flow through the nostrils. Turbinate reduction surgery is not always done with a septoplasty but it is certainly common for both to be performed simultaneously.

My deviated septum surgery before and after experience ended up being very worthwhile but I certainly did my homework. I did my research and I’ll try to detail that below.

Preparing for Septoplasty Surgery

I wrote a series of articles at the time I had my surgery done which were broken up into three parts. The Preparing for Septoplasty Surgery article has many details and I will summarize here but please feel free to read the complete article which will include more detailed information.

Keep a Folder

I’m a firm believer in being organized from the get-go. Your ENT will provide you a packet on what you should expect before and after surgery. The packet will include guidelines you should follow specifically before the surgery.

I kept a hardcopy folder of this information in lieu of only electronic info. I like to keep hard copies of any correspondence.

Know your Costs

Septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery can certainly be a costly endeavor. Insurance will typically cover the cost of a septoplasty because it is not considered cosmetic. But you also have to think about your deductibles. These days most medical insurance policies have a high deductible.

In my own situation I had been paying into my deductible throughout the year so I opted to have my surgery at the end of the year. With high deductible medical insurance if you reach your maximum deductible, the insurance company will pick up the rest of the bill. This certainly helped me out.

Make it a point to contact your medical insurance company and get from them the costs of the operation procedures and what it costs to be at the facility for the procedure. It is a very costly procedure especially if you don’t have insurance.

If you do have a high deductible plan and have not paid into your deductible much at all then you would have to pay out-of-pocket to reach the deductible until the insurance picks up the remainder.

You must speak to your insurance company to ensure the procedure is in-network and the facility and doctor is approved by your insurance company. These are the basics but a good representative should be able to give you a breakdown of the costs involved.

Please note that there are higher deductibles for in-network vs out-of-network doctors and facilities. And the largest cost is for the use of the facility and recovery in the facility. Please check out my article for some of the questions you should be asking your insurance company.

Talk to H/R and Boss about Recovery Time

There will certainly be some recovery time. Your septum will take some time to heal for sure. Even after many weeks you will still be in the healing phase. After about a week I had splints removed from my nose that kept everything in place post-surgery. Having splints removed is a typical procedure after a septoplasty.

I would tell your company you will need at least a week post-surgery before you can start working again but it all depends on the individual. It could be longer.

The Day of Septoplasty Surgery

For a detailed account of my surgery day you can read my article Day of my Septoplasty Surgery. I’ll try to condense it here.

Arrive an hour before surgery.

Ensure someone is there to drive you home after surgery. This is a requirement.

Ensure you haven’t eaten anything since midnight before. You are allowed to have a black coffee in the morning and can take your regular medication such as blood pressure medicine.

You’ll meet with a nurse and anesthesiologist prior to the procedure in a pre-op room. My wife is there with me in the pre-op room.

IV will be initiated so that I would be hydrated during the procedure.

Wheeled into the operating room.

Procedure is performed while I was under anesthesia. The procedure took about 1.5 hours in total.

Nurse asks me questions in the recovery room. I notice I have a moustache dressing under my nose to collect blood after the procedure.

In about a 1/2 hour I am wheeled back into the original pre-op room where my wife is and where she had waited during the procedure.

In about 1/2 hour I am allowed to leave the hospital

My wife goes and drives the car up to the front door while a transporter wheels me outside and helps me into the passenger’s seat of the car.

The nurse had given me a prescription for pain meds of hydrocodone-acetominiphine tablets which we picked up at a pharmacy close to the hospital.

When we got home I sat on a recliner with my head up. The moustache dressing had to be replaced multiple times in the first 24 hours and eventually the bleeding subsided.

Recovering from Septoplasty Surgery

I created another article entitled Recovering from Septoplasty Surgery with many more details than what you see below. You should definitely read that article for more details. Here’s a quick timeline of the recovery.

Day 1

I ended up taking extra strength acetominiphine in lieu of the hydrocodone. I took 2 tablets every 4-6 hours and dropped down to 1 every 4-6 hours. During the first 24 hours I changed the moustache dressing every hour because it filled up with blood that quickly.

I also constantly used saline spray which is probably the most important aid to recovery.

I slept in a recliner for the first night so my head was raised sufficiently. It’s important that you purchase a straw or multiple straws because it’s basically impossible to drink liquids with the moustache dressing in place.

Day 2 – Day 4

After the first 24 hours I didn’t have to replace the moustache dressing regularly because the blood rushing from my nose was dissipating. Unfortunately I also had a cold so my nose was running because of that. But, after the surgery you cannot blow your nose so I went through a couple of boxes of tissues. Also, when you sneeze (if you have to) it’s important to open your mouth so as not to affect your recovering nostrils.

During this time my upper lip, gums above my front teeth, and nose area was still numb from the operation. But this numbness does dissipate over time and was getting less and less each day.

Day 5 – Day 6

I was starting to feel more myself on day 5. The numbness in my upper lip and gums was the least it had been since the surgery. On day 6 I was even better. I continued to flush my nostrils with saline spray.

Day 7

This is the day I had been waiting for since the surgery. It’s the day that the splints were removed. It was exactly one week to the day since my surgery. As soon as the splints were removed I could breathe for the first time through both nostrils! And it was heavenly!

I had heard from reading other accounts of having splints removed that it hurt. For me, it was a piece of cake! I was told that the fact I utilized my saline spray religiously was the reason it didn’t hurt when they were removed. The saline spray kept the nostrils lubricated and the splints just came right out.

My Septoplasty Before and After Experience – A Summary

It has been now more than three years since my deviated septum before and after surgery experience. Would I do it again? I can answer that with a resounding YES! I’ve been able to breathe easily through both nostrils since the day my splints were removed.

If you’re on the fence about the partaking in the deviated septum surgery before and after experience, I can say that it is definitely worthwhile for anyone who is contemplating this surgery.

Septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery is worth it but do your homework. Make sure you know your costs, know what to expect, and work closely with your insurance company to get all of your questions answered.

I can honestly say that, for me, I should have done it many years earlier!

Are you looking for a long-lasting, well-made gooseneck electric kettle? This article will go into great detail about the Cosori Original Electric Gooseneck Kettle.

I was in the market for a great gooseneck electric kettle that would be perfect for brewing my pour over coffee each morning. Once I found this Cosori Kettle and had used it for approximately 6 months, I decided to make a YouTube video entitled: Cosori Electric Kettle Review.

You can watch the video review if you like which can be seen below but this written review is a bit more comprehensive. So I hope you watch the video and read the full review below to get all the information you need on this electric kettle.

I also have an unboxing video further down in this article so you can see how the product came to me and what is included directly out of the box.

This Cosori Gooseneck Kettle has been a huge improvement over my previous electric kettle. The main difference is that this kettle has a gooseneck spout which has made all the difference in the world!

My daughter calls it precision pouring and I’m baffled that other reviewers are saying that it is not the best for pour-over coffee. I beg to differ! The Cosori Electric Gooseneck Kettle is the ultimate pour-over coffee kettle in my mind and after using it for 6 months.

Please know that I didn’t just test this Cosori Kettle. I’ve used it over a long period of time. I think that makes a difference when you use a product over and over. You get to know it and can make a proper determination when it comes to a review.

Simply testing a product once and giving a published review of it, in my mind, is deceptive to the public. I purchased this kettle with my own money and will give an honest review of it through using it on a regular basis.

Gooseneck kettles are made specifically for the ease of pouring and for being able to target where you are pouring. Well, this particular Cosori Gooseneck Kettle certainly does the job. Kettles with gooseneck spouts are not only great for pour-over coffee making but are also great for tea drinkers.

I use it for pour over coffee and my daughter uses it to brew her tea every day. I’ve used this particular model for six months as I write this review and will share my thoughts below.

Kettle Design – Stylish and Leak-Proof

The design of the kettle is sleek and very stylish. Sitting on my counter it almost resembles a work of art with the curvature of the gooseneck spout. The model I purchased was black matte but you can also buy a version in silver as seen above.

The product dimensions are 12.09 x 9.45 x 7.76 inches which is small enough to be delicate but not overbearing or bulky on a kitchen counter.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-511261" title="cosori electric gooseneck kettle">

The kettle arrives in 3 pieces – stainless steel kettle, lid, and the power base.

Presets

There are 7 buttons on the base of the kettle, 5 of which pertain to preset ideal temperatures – white tea (170°F), green tea (180°F), oolong tea (195°F), coffee (205°F), and black tea/boil (212°F).

The other two buttons are the On/Off button and the Hold Temp button. The Hold Temp button allows you to maintain the temperature you have chosen for an additional 60 minutes if you need it.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-511254" title="cosori gooseneck kettle">

</picture>

The buttons emit a soft blue light when depressed adding to the stylish nature of the kettle.

What adds to the style of the presets is that when they are depressed they emit a light blue color which not only easily indicates your choices but also is a nice contrast to the black or silver color of the kettle.

Max Fill Line

There is a Max Fill line etched into the inside of the Cosori Electric Kettle two inches down from the top. This is done for safety purposes since if you have it set to boil you don’t want the water to boil over.

By filling it to the Max Fill Line it will ensure that the kettle will not boil over. You can actually see the Max Fill Line on the outside of the kettle but I see no benefit to that. I only use the line etched in the inside of the kettle itself.

Steam Vents

There are 3 small holes in the top of the kettle which allow the steam to vent out the top of the kettle. These vent holes just add another level of security in addition to the Max Fill Line.

Leak-Proof

The kettle’s design helps prevent leaks so you can boil and pour without any mess. The gooseneck spout pours water slowly enough so as not to leak as other electric kettles tend to do. This is the first electric kettle I have used that has never leaked and this is simply because of the design of the gooseneck spout.

Innovative Hide-Away Cord Storage

Another really nice feature of this electric gooseneck kettle is that it has a long enough cord (39″) that will allow you to reach any plug near your kitchen counter. The best part is that if you don’t need the ample cord length it will wrap neatly into the bottom of the base allowing you to see only the portion that enters the plug in the wall.

There is a convenient slot in the base which the cord will fit through as well making it a seamless transition to the plug.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-511259" title="Hide-away cord storage">

Hide-away cord storage will wrap up the 39″ cord into the base when not needed.

Construction – 100% Stainless Steel

The electric kettle is made of 100% stainless steel in the kettle itself, the spout, and the lid. Other kettles in its class tend to have plastic within the kettle itself which would eventually degrade over time. This one has no plastic, Teflon, or chemical linings thereby yielding an unadulterated, pure taste to your tea or coffee.

The plastic handle keeps your hands away from the heat of the kettle. There is also a plastic piece on the top of the lid which also protects your hands from the heat of the kettle. And the 3 steam vents, mentioned above, allow the steam to escape which is an added safety feature.

Cosori Kettle Safety Features

Boil-Dry Protection

The kettle is equipped with boil-dry protection. What that really means is that if there happens to be less than 1/2 cup (118ml) of water in the kettle the heat will automatically shut off. You should then let the kettle cool and add more water to begin the heating process again.

Plastic Safe-Touch Handle

What’s nice about the handle of the kettle is that none of the heat of the kettle itself is transferred to the plastic handle allowing it to be cool to the touch. It also has an area at the top of the handle that is made specifically for your thumb to rest while pouring. It’s a really nice and unexpected feature.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-511256" title="Plastic Safe-Touch Handle">

</picture>

The plastic handle has a convenient thumb rest at the top you can use while pouring.

Non-Slip Base

There are rubber feet underneath the base of the unit which allows it to grip the counter. This is one of the first things I noticed in that wherever I placed the unit, it remained there rock-solid without any slippage.

Cool Touch Knob on Stainless Steel Lid

The stainless steel lid was built with a cool-touch knob that’s safe to touch after boiling. It is the same plastic material as the safe-touch handle.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-511267" title="Cool touch knob on stainless steel lid">

Cosori Gooseneck Kettle Setup and Initial Use

Unboxing of the Kettle (video)

I created an unboxing video seen below that basically shows that the unit came well-packaged. There was no damage at all to the unit itself although there was a slight tear in the box.

Here is my YouTube video of the unboxing of the Cosori Gooseneck Electric Kettle.

Before First Use Perform the Water Test

It is recommended to perform what is called a Water Test prior to using your kettle to ensure that it is working properly. You should not drink the water boiled in the Water Test. Follow the steps below.

Remove all of the packaging material from the kettle.

Unravel the power cord completely and place the power base on a flat and level surface.

Fill the kettle with water to the Max Fill Line (previously referenced). The Max Fill Line is etched into the inside of the kettle about 2″ down from the top of the kettle. Put the lid onto the kettle and ensure it fits snugly.

Press the On/Off button and then the 212°F (Boil Black) button. Both buttons will illuminate a bluish color indicating that the unit is starting the heating process.

Once boiling is reached at 212°F the kettle will automatically turn off. Allow the kettle to cool and pour out the water.

Rinse the kettle out 2-3 times with cold water. You are now ready to use.

First-Time Use of the Cosori Electric Gooseneck Kettle

Using the kettle is very intuitive. Assuming I’m making enough coffee for two people I fill the water to the Max Fill Line. It takes about 26 ounces of water to fill it to this line which is more than enough for two 12 ounce cups of coffee. I could never understand why anyone would have only an 8 ounce cup of coffee!

Assuming I am using the kettle for pour-over coffee, I press the On/Off button, then the Coffee (205°F) button, and finally the Hold Temp button. All three of the buttons are then illuminated blue indicating the heating process has begun.

Depending on whether I filled the kettle with cold water or hot water it typically takes between 5 – 6 minutes to get to the 205°F temperature when it is filled to the max. Once the temperature is reached, 3 beeps will sound. The beeps are not very loud but you do have the ability with this kettle to turn off the beeps if you prefer.

The main advantage to utilizing the Hold Temp button is that if you didn’t hear the beeps or happen to be out of the room, the water will stay at the temperature chosen for up to 60 minutes.

If you missed the 3 beeps and are not sure if the kettle has reached temperature yet all you have to do is depress the Hold Temp button and if all the lights go out you are at the desired temperature. If they don’t go out, the temperature has not yet been reached and you can simply depress the Hold Temp button again and wait for the 3 beeps.

Kettle Performance

Quick Heating

As mentioned above, based on how hot the water you initially fill the kettle with, the time taken to get to temperature is between 5-6 minutes. You must remember that this kettle will only hold up to 26 ounces of water given the size of the kettle so that certainly adds to the quick-heating feature.

Precision, Leak-Free Pouring

When utilizing this kettle for pour over coffee brewing I have found it the best kettle I have ever used for this purpose. I don’t think for the 6 months I’ve been using it that it has ever leaked any water during pouring. And this is simply due to the stylish gooseneck spout which is the main reason I purchased this kettle.

Any kettle I have previously used for pour over coffee brewing has always dripped when pouring which really takes away from the experience and makes a mess! It’s a pleasure using this kettle for pour over coffee and I think the water comes out at a perfect amount for engulfing the coffee grains.

My daughter uses this kettle each day to brew her tea. She loves it and especially uses the Hold Temp button so that she can have a 2nd cup of tea within an hour of the first. Based on her recommendation it is also a great kettle for brewing tea. She uses the white tea (170°F) setting as this is the type of tea she prefers.

Cleaning and Ongoing Maintenance

Daily Cleaning

Simply unplug the kettle and allow it to cool to touch before beginning the cleaning process.

Wipe the base and the kettle with a damp cloth. Also ensure that the electric socket underneath the kettle is kept dry.

Dry the kettle, lid, and base after each use.

Regular Descaling

Descaling is a process that removes mineral deposits from the inside of the kettle. So depending on the hardness of your water this will determine how often you should descale your kettle. A clear indication of a kettle needing descaling is a brown tinge on the inside of your kettle.

This could lead to an off taste in the coffee or tea so it’s important to regularly descale your kettle. Here are the steps. I have used this process many times and it works perfectly and removes all deposits from the bottom of the kettle.

Unplug the kettle, pour out all the water, and ensure that the kettle is cold.

Squeeze half of a lemon into the kettle or add 1/2 cup (118 mL) of distilled white vinegar into the kettle. You can even add both simultaneously which I have done with great results.

If the inside of the kettle has a thick build-up of mineral deposits you should scrub the inside of the kettle with a non-scratch sponge. You should avoid steel wool at all costs!

Add 2 cups (473 mL) of water. Depress the On/Off button and the Boil/Black (212 °F) button and wait for the mixture to boil.

Pour out the contents and wipe the interior of the kettle with a non-abrasive cloth, shop towel, sponge, paper towel, or cleaning brush.

Repeat if needed.

Always rinse out the kettle with cold water multiple times at the end of the process.

If you regularly descale your kettle it will stay clean and deliver the best-tasting tea or coffee for you every day.

YouTube Video – How to Descale a Cosori Electric Kettle

I put together a YouTube video of the process of descaling or cleaning the Cosori electric kettle. You can view it here or click on the image below.

Value – High, Price – Reasonable

I paid $69.99 on Amazon for this Cosori Gooseneck Kettle which I feel was a great value. I have even seen it as low as $60 on Amazon at times. Given its many features like the preset temperatures, hold temp button, stainless steel construction, gooseneck pouring capability, and its safety features, I feel the bang for your buck is high. I certainly have had no regrets whatsoever since purchasing this Cosori Kettle.

Cosori Electric Kettle Review Summary

Needless to say, I am very happy with this Cosori Electric Gooseneck Kettle. For my purposes, I really have no complaints. The only possible con when it comes to this kettle may be the size of the kettle. I make coffee for my wife and I so the size of this kettle is perfect for us.

When we do have company I need to heat up the kettle multiple times to make enough coffee for guests. It isn’t really a problem for me but if you are buying this kettle to make more than 2 cups of coffee or tea at one time, on a regular daily basis, you might want to look into a larger electric kettle for your needs.

Other than the size of the kettle, which for me is not a problem, I’m very happy with the purchase and would recommend it highly for both pour-over coffee and for brewing your tea on a daily basis.

When you work out with weights on a regular basis, you want to have a symmetrical body where your upper body doesn’t outshine your lower body. For most weightlifters, oftentimes the legs are overlooked and, more often than not, that includes the calf muscles.

I happen to think that large calves are typically as a result of your heredity but that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t still grow large calves over time. That begs the question “How do I grow my calves substantially so that I can attain a symmetrical body?“

Well, there are two main muscles when it comes to the calves, the gastrocnemius and the soleus. The gastrocnemius muscle is stimulated when you perform a standing calf raise whereas the soleus (which is the larger muscle in volume) is stimulated when you perform a seated calf raise.

There are makeshift alternative methods to perform a seated calf raise but the best way to do so is to use a seated calf raise machine. There are many different machines that you can utilize or purchase but the XMark Model XM-7613 is the one I purchased.

Do seated calf raises work to develop your calves? Well, it is important to include both standing calf raises and seated calf raises in order to develop both the gastrocnemius and the soleus muscles in the calves. And yes, seated calf raises done on a regular basis do lead to larger, fuller calf development.

Seated Calf Raise Alternatives to Using a Machine

Seated Calf Raises with Dumbbells

If you don’t own a seated calf raise machine you do have an option (seen below) where you can hold a barbell in each hand and perform the calf raises with the weight resting on each leg.

Seated Calf Raises with Barbell

Another option for seated calf raises is to utilize a weighted Olympic Bar, as seen below, resting on your legs (lap) and performing the calf raises in this manner.

Through the years it has been found that if you combine seated calf raises with standing calf raises, proper calf development can be achieved. So, in a nutshell seated calf raises do work but only if they are done properly and they are done regularly as part of your weightlifting workouts.

If you are interested in the best seated calf raise machine for a home gym, the XMark Seated Calf Raise Machine is the one to check out!

Are you looking for the best seated calf raise machine for a home gym? Well, I certainly found one, the XMark Seated Calf Raise Machine – Model XM-7613, that I feel is the best value on the market especially for a home gym. Read on for a detailed review.

Since the pandemic struck back in 2020 many of us who are fitness-fanatics ended up scattering to set up a home gym as most gyms were shut down. Fortunately for me, I already had a home gym in my shed that I had been in the process of using and furnishing with equipment.

XMark Seated Calf Raise Machine (Model XM-7613)

One of the specialty machines or pieces of equipment that I always wanted in my home gym was a seated calf raise machine. So I researched far and wide for the best seated calf machine for a home gym.

I think I found the best one for my needs, the XMark Model XM-7613, at a price point that I was willing to shell out. It isn’t the most expensive like the ones I used to use when I frequented well-furnished weightlifting gyms, but it’s well-built with a high rating and at a price that made it worth my while to take the plunge.

The XMark Seated Calf Machine is what I have found to be the best machine to do a seated calf raise at home. Why do I say that? Well, it’s clearly a well-built piece of weightlifting equipment. Some of its features can be seen below.

Here is a detailed YouTube video review of the XMark Seated Calf Raise Machine that I did after using the machine for over a year. It goes over all of the features of the machine and also includes a demonstration of me using the machine toward the end of the video.

I like to look at weight lifting from a systematic point of view and try to understand the science of the muscles. So I did my research and I found a particularly informational source, Jeff Nippard, on how to build muscle and weight the right way.

Jeff’s YouTube Channel looks at the science of building muscle and he has a particularly detailed video on the calves. The schematic below on calves I found in that particular video.

Calf Muscles Detailed in Relation to a Seated Calf Raise

Gastrocnemius

Wikipedia identifies the gastrocnemius as the following: a superficial two-headed muscle that is in the back part of the lower leg of humans. It runs from its two heads just above the knee to the heel, a three joint muscle (knee, ankle and subtalar joints).

I know, it’s a funny name but this muscle is typically referred to as the Gastroc. It’s a lot easier that remembering the full name.

Soleus

Wikipedia identifies the soleus as the following: a powerful muscle in the back part of the lower leg (the calf). It runs from just below the knee to the heel, and is involved in standing and walking. It is closely connected to the gastrocnemius muscle and some anatomists consider them to be a single muscle, the triceps surae.

It is important to note that the soleus, which sits underneath the gastrocnemius, is the muscle which is primarily affected when you use a seated calf raise machine. The gastrocnemius is more affected by a standing calf raise.

It is also important to note that the soleus has more muscle volume (as noted in the image above) so it’s extremely important to utilize a seated calf raise machine in your weight workouts. It’s an ideal piece of weight equipment for calf development.

It actually makes more sense to use a combination of a sitting calf raise machine as well as performing standing calf raises. It is important that when you work your calves you should perform at least one standing calf raise exercise and one seated calf raise exercise in your weight repertoire.

This will ensure that both the soleus and the gastrocnemius are stimulated and flexed during your calf workout which should lead to growth over time. Please note that the soleus sits beneath the gastrocnemius so if the soleus grows it should lead to much fuller lower legs which is the point of any muscle-building activity.

Standing vs Seated Calf Raise

Standing Calf Raise Options

Squat Rack

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510916" title="calf raise machine alternative using squat rack">

</picture>

Standing Calf Raise using a Squat Rack

Any weightlifting gym will have a number of squat racks available for use but from my experience they are typically occupied. That’s why when I used to go to a gym, I would try to go off-hours when there aren’t too many weight lifters. Lifters tend to gravitate toward certain pieces of weight equipment and the squat rack is certainly one of them.

To perform standing calf raises, assuming you are using a squat rack and the bar is resting on top of your back (as seen above), you typically want to do them with the balls of your feet resting on a raised platform so that you can get full extension of your calves. Remember with standing calf raises, you are hitting the gastrocnemius mentioned above.

If you are in a gym, the raised platform could be a couple of 25 pound weight plates on top of each other so that you can get full extension when performing the repetitions. Or possibly you could find a raised platform available for you to use (maybe a platform used for a step workout rather than a weight would certainly work).

Barbell Support

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510914" title="seated calf machine alternative using support">

</picture>

Calf Raise using York Pro Barbell Support

I have a York Pro Barbell Support which I use for bench presses and when I perform standing calf exercises in my home gym. I couldn’t do without this foundation piece of weight equipment in my home gym. When not on my barbell support my 7 foot Olympic bar is on my wall-mounted barbell holder from Yes4All.

The last I checked the barbell support was available on Amazon but there are other comparable models. I use a couple of 2X6’s sandwiched together with screws and place the balls of my feet onto the wood platform.

Then, with my Olympic weight bar resting on the safety bars of my barbell support I grab the bar, always wearing my Rip Toned Wrist Wraps, like I was going to do dead lifts (each hand in opposite direction as seen above) and perform my calf raises in this manner. I always try to get full extension and count to two at the top of the calf raise and at the bottom.

Another option you have for performing a calf raise in a standing position is to grab a dumbbell in each hand (a reasonable weight you can handle) and place the balls of your feet on a platform. Then just raise and lower your feet just as you have done with the other exercises. This is simply another variation of a standing calf raise.

If you are a member of a gym then you probably have access to standing calf raise machines. I work out at home so I don’t have access to this specialized piece of weight equipment.

But if you do, this machine is made for your lower leg development in a standing position. One again, since the platform your feet are on is raised you can get full extension.

It is important to note that a standing calf raise machine price is typically more than a seated version but not always.

At the same time, your feet are on a raised platform that I’ve mentioned previously. You simply raise and lower your feet flexing your muscles just as you would do when performing any calf exercise.

Olympic Barbell on Lap

This is pretty much the same as the previous exercise but this time you have an Olympic bar on your lap while seated. You raise and lower your feet flexing your calf muscles on top of the raised platform.

The difficult aspect of both the barbells and the Olympic bar scenario is placing the bar on your lap (can add weight or without lbs) or actually grabbing the barbells to place them on your lap. Believe me, I’ve tried both options until I opted to buy a specialized seated calf machine.

This is by far the best option. I purchased my calf machine on Amazon and, thus far, it is one of the best purchases I made for my home gym. I needed to find an option for my calf muscles that would directly hit the soleus (as mentioned above). Without a bent leg option, you’re never going to thoroughly work your calves sufficiently. These machines are a must, as far as I’m concerned, in a home gym.

Comparison Table of X-Mark Calf Raise Machine with Two Comparable Seated Calf Raise Machines

The table below includes a comparison of the X-Mark Model XM-7613 seated calf raise machine with the Body-Solid Model GSCR349 seated calf raise machine and the Deltech Fitness seated calf raise machine Model DF805. All three of these seated calf machines are in the same class and roughly the same size or footprint.

Prices and Amazon ratings are stated below based on the date 8/27/2022.

Model →

Criteria
↓

X-Mark Seated Calf
Raise Machine
(Model XM-7613)

Body-Solid Seated Calf Raise
Machine
(Model GSCR349)

Deltech Fitness Seated
Calf Raise Machine
(Model DF805)

Cost:

$425

$799

$269

Material:

11-Gauge Steel

11-Gauge Steel

Steel

Length:

47.5″

47″

48.5″

Width:

22″

23″

24″

Item Weight:

80 Pounds

95 Pounds

66 Pounds

Types of Weights:

Standard and Olympic

Standard Only (must purchase Olympic adaptor separately)

Standard and Olympic

Amazon Review
Ratings:

4.6 out of 5
(335 ratings)

4.4 out of 5
(34 ratings)

4.6 out of 5
(115 ratings)

I’ve determined that the X-Mark Model XM-7613 is the best seated calf raise machine for a home gym because it is a much better value than either the Body-Solid Model GSCR349 or the Deltech Fitness Model DF805.

First of all, the most significant aspect is the price of the machine. It is comparably-built to the Body-Solid calf raise machine but it is selling for almost half the price giving the savings back to the consumer. The other drawback to the high-cost Body-Solid model is that you need to purchase separately an adaptor to use the calf raise machine with Olympic weights.

This will lead to an even greater outlay of cash for the Body-Solid machine. The Deltech Fitness model is cheaper than the X-Mark calf raise machine but it is also much lighter and does not use 11-gauge steel in its construction. As a result it is only 66 pounds vs the 80 pound solidly-built X-Mark model.

My assertion that the X-Mark Seated Calf Raise Machine Model XM-7613 is the best calf machine for a home gym is based on a number of factors.

Heavy duty 11-gauge steel construction.

The small footprint is important for cramped space within a home gym.

Excellent value as far as cost is concerned for the home gym consumer.

The weight horns are compatible with standard (1″ hole) weights and Olympic weights allowing the consumer to utilize whatever weights they already own.

The X-Mark Model XM-7613 continues to get high Amazon ratings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Seated Calf Raises Necessary?

Well, this certainly depends on whether or not you care about the look and development of your calf muscles. If you want to properly develop them to their maximum capacity you will have to do some type of bent leg calf exercises. As has been mentioned numerous times in this article, bent leg calf raise exercises affect the soleus which is the largest muscle associated with this area of the leg. Without working this muscle you will never properly develop your calves.

Do Seated Calf Raises Work?

If you sufficiently work your calf muscles in a seated fashion utilizing either a piece of equipment like a seated calf machine or using the other options identified in this article, your calves will grow. This is assuming you are doing the exercises at least 3 times per week, in conjunction with standing calf raises, and performing a sufficient number of repetitions. Seated calf machines are available not only to large gyms but also at a lower price point for a home gym.

Which machine is best for calves?

There has been some scientific evidence that donkey calf raises may be the best exercise you can do for your calf muscles. There are at-home methods to emulate donkey calf raises but a specialized machine is recommended which is typically found at a gym. Specialized pieces of equipment or machines such as a standing calf machine and a seated calf machine are also recommended for muscle development. More often than not, a conjunction of standing and seated calves should be sufficient for substantial calf development.

Are seated calf raises bad?

There is no evidence that seated calf raises are bad for you. In fact, just the opposite. If you are utilizing equipment like the XMark Seated Calf Machine and not a knock-off at-home emulation of a seated calf raise, you will be performing a safe exercise for the development of your calf muscles. There are many machines made specifically for calves that can be found at a reasonable cost for a home workout.

What are the main exercises to develop my calves?

Standing and seated calf raises should be done in conjunction with each other during your calf workouts. You can either use machines or there are other options without purchasing a specialized machine. A standing and a seated bent leg calf exercise should be performed when you are working your calves.

As long as you are hitting both your gastrocnemius muscle (standing) and soleus muscle (seated), you will be working your lower leg sufficiently. This also assumes you are performing a sufficient number of repetitions leading to a burning sensation within your calf muscles. It is also important that you perform the raise and lower motion slowly pausing for a two count at the top and bottom of the motion.

Furnish your Home Gym with Quality Equipment

I’ve made some investments in top quality home gym equipment. Other than my seated calf machine detailed in this article, here are just a few of my other home gym purchases.

A Wall Mounted Barbell Rack

If you are into Olympic weights then you probably have at least 2 Olympic bars and probably a couple of curl bars. My Yes4All wall mounted barbell storage rack keeps my bars up and out of the way at all times.

Dumbbell Rack

If you are a lifter and have a gym at home or in your shed like I do, some type of dumbbell rack is a must. I purchased a FISUP dumbbell rack stand because it is a very small footprint and it fits well in my shed workout area. It will hold a limited amount of dumbbells but that’s fine with me because I typically use dumbbell handles and build my own dumbbells when I need them.

Barbell Support

If you do squats or bench presses on a regular basis you need something to hold the barbell loaded up with weights. I purchased a York Barbell Pro Series 204 Support that I use every day. It’s one of my fundamental pieces of home gym equipment I could not do without.

Flat-to-Incline Bench

A weight bench is another key piece of weightlifting equipment that you use for bench presses, inclined bench presses, and flys. I also use my York Barbell STS Flat-to-Incline Bench for seated dumbbell curls and lay against it when doing hip thrusts for my glutes.

All in all, you simply need to purchase some foundational pieces of workout equipment for a home gym.

A bar biting Syrian hamster!

If you own a hamster that lives in a metal cage, the issue of bar biting or bar chewing of a cage can be one that plagues you. Believe me, I know all about it. I own 1 year old female Syrian hamster and I had this issue when she was a little younger.

BUT, I solved the issue and came up with a solution on my own that I really haven’t seen anywhere on the internet. Don’t miss my YouTube video at the end of this article!

My Hamster Biting Cage Bars Solution

I’m not saying that the solution I’ll be presenting hasn’t been published somewhere but I’ve never seen it. I can honestly say that I came up with this solution on my own.

It requires a very little bit of DIY skills and some basic tools but even if you don’t have the tools I’m sure you could find someone that could help you out. If you are still living at home maybe your mother or father has these basic tools and they could help you out.

It is my guess that you could find someone that could help if you don’t have these tools yourself.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510211">

</picture>

My Syrian Hamster Cooty!

So, to give a little background, I’ve read and watched youTube videos about what others have suggested.

Some suggestions were to cover the area that your hamster is biting on with lemon or lime juice. I even read to use olive oil.

The reason I don’t like these ideas is because I simply don’t want my hamster to ingest anything that could harm her.

It’s not worth it to me. I would never run that risk.

Other suggestions were to make sure that you have a lot of chew toys in the cage.

Well, I have a number of chew toys in my hamster’s cage but that didn’t seem to help.

Other obvious suggestions are to change to a bin cage or an aquarium which do not have metal bars.

Also, an upgrade to a cage like the Ikea Detolf would also solve the problem or to an aquarium or bin cage. But most of us have already paid for a cage that we like for our hamsters. Mine is a Prevue 528 and I like everything about the cage and I’m not about to change.

I like woodworking so I am always working on some DIY project or another with my wife. One thing we did a few years ago is replace our countertops with a material called hobby board or hobby wood. I think it’s called different names in different big box stores. It is basically wood that is cut very thin to ¼” width and is typically sold in 3.5” high and various lengths. You can see it below.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510761">

</picture>

Believe it or not, this wood worked perfectly for us when it came to upgrading our countertops.

For short money we were able to have a brand new kitchen countertop that has lasted many years.

Anyway, I had a bunch of leftover Hobby Board from that project so I got to thinking.

Why can’t I attach some of this wood to the areas of the cage where my hamster was biting? Then hopefully, instead of bar biting or bar chewing, she would bite on the wood (I purchased the hardwood version, specifically oak) which would actually be good for her teeth.

I would steer away from any of the soft woods like pine or cedar as they have oils/resins within the wood that could hurt a hamster. They also would tend to splinter much more easily than a hard wood which could maybe cut the inside of the hamster’s mouth.

So I then had to figure out how to attach the wood to the cage? So I went out into my workshop and saw a container of zip ties. I figured if I drilled 2 holes in the Hobby Board (either side-to-side or on top of each other depending on the cage rung configuration) I could string the zip tie through the holes and also through the cage rungs.

Then when I pulled on the zip ties they would tighten the wood to the cage. It worked perfectly!

Here are the zip ties that I had. I would get the ones that are about 6” long like the ones below.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510764">

</picture>

Steps to Prevent a Hamster from Bar Biting

1. Identify where your hamster is biting the cage. What I have noticed is that there are some sections of the cage that she was constantly biting on.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510765">

</picture>

2. Estimate how long you want the board to be. If you want to cover the whole back of the cage (just above the plastic bedding area), just use a tape measure and measure the length of the back of the cage. Here is the first piece of wood I added to my Prevue 528 cage because this was the area that Cooty was biting on. Once I added this wood she just moved onto the side of the cage to bite on the metal so I had to add wood to the side as well.

3. Once you have identified how long the wood should be, you should cut the Hobby Board to that length. If you don’t have any saw available when you buy the wood at a big box store they will cut the wood to length for you or you can use the cutting stations that they have available to the public.

4. Now you should hold the wood up to the cage and if the rungs are running side to side (like on the back and front of the Prevue 528) you should make marks one on top of the other. This is where you are going to drill your holes. I would leave about an inch or two in between the marks. If it is a piece of wood longer than say 6” I would have 2 marks on one side of the board and 2 marks on the other side because you’ll be using 2 zip ties to secure the wood.

5. Then you would drill holes (I found 3/16” drill bit worked well for me) where you made the marks. Here is what a piece of the Hobby Board would look like with the holes drilled and the zip tie fished through the holes. You just need to ensure that the holes are big enough for the nylon zip tie to pass through. As I just mentioned a 3/16” drill bit worked perfectly for me.

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510763">

</picture>

The image above would be what you would see from the inside of the cage. The example above would work when the rungs of the cage are running north-south like on the sides of the Prevue 528 cage that I own.

6. String the zip ties through the holes and through the rungs of the cage. You’ll see what it looks like below:

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510762">

</picture>

I just cut the ends of the ties off as you can see above after I pull it tight. With the board above I have another set of holes all the way to the left.

The image below shows a piece of wood where she ended up biting on the wood instead of the cage. Once she started biting on the wood she stuck with the wood because that’s what she preferred!

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510760">

</picture>

Here is another section on the side of the cage that she was bar chewing. Once again, once she started biting on the wood she just kept biting the wood!

<picture decoding="async" class="wp-image-510766">

</picture>

So, this is essentially the solution that I came up with for an alternative to bar biting. I find it interesting that even though Cooty bit her way through the wood and the metal cage was now exposed to her, she stuck with biting on the oak.

She since has stopped bar biting or bar chewing and she has various sections of the cage still not covered with wood.

Anyone who has their own home gym and is into weight lifting at all, probably has a few Olympic bars hanging around which aren’t properly stored. That was my problem before I bought and assembled the Yes4All Wall Mounted Barbell Rack. My workout area is in my heated shed so I have not only workout stuff in there but also my woodworking equipment, a generator, and many other household items I need to store. (Don’t miss my youTube video below!)

Wall Mounted Barbell Rack from Yes4All in my Home Gym

I am always looking for ways I can organize and furnish my workout area of my shed. My latest addition to my workout area is my XMark seated calf raise machine. I did have a number of Olympic bars just hanging around in the shed without a real home.

I found the Yes4All Wall Mounted Barbell Rack online and read a bunch of the reviews which showed images of people’s home gyms and their barbells hanging on the walls. This barbell storage rack just looked so slick and professional and I knew right then and there I wanted one.

Here is my Yes4All Barbell Rack in my Shed Workout Area!

So I bit the bullet and purchased a Yes4All Wall Mounted Barbell Rack for $38.25 for one pair of racks. You can get 2 pair for a discount at $62.54 so if you think you could use another set getting the 2 pair might make sense. I recently unboxed and installed the pair that I received and created a youTube video.

I was fortunate in that my shed has exposed studs instead of having to install this rack over drywall. I guess if you have a home gym with drywall you will have to use a stud finder to get the exact center of the stud for mounting purposes.

They weren’t too difficult to install but you might want to have a socket set available for ratcheting in the hex-headed lag screws. If I didn’t have to film the process for my video, I would guesstimate it took me about 30 minutes for the complete install ensuring that everything was level.

Barbell Wall Rack Features

Save Space & Keep Bars Organized: Organize your barbells which will always available when you need them. Adds a professionalism to your workout area.

Heavy Steel Construction: No more concerns about falling bars. The barbell rack storage is constructed of 7-gauge steel for the most durable barbell rack you can find. Steel bar rack is covered with black powder finish to prevent rust & corrosion.

Protective UHMW Protective Layer: Provide the UHMW plastic pad to protect your barbell’s sharp knurling and shaft finish from wear & scratches even when you rack and unrack the barbell multiple times during a workout.

Versatile Barbell Rack: Designed to give ample space and fits most of the barbells including Olympic/standard bars.

Easy Installation: With the proper tools (socket set worked well for me), the installation can be quick. If you already have drywall on your walls you must identify your studs properly. A stud finder should work well to that end.

I love this barbell wall rack but this is just one of the many pieces of equipment I have in my shed gym. I also have a York STS Flat-to-Incline Bench, a York Pro Series Barbell Support, a Fisup Dumbbell Rack, and of course my new XMark Seated Calf Machine as I mentioned above. And I never forget to wear my Rip Toned Wrist Wraps whenever I am lifting.

Wall Mounted Barbell Rack from Yes4All Summary

I’ve used my barbell wall rack for about a year now and it is one of the best purchases I have made. It’s solid wall mount barbell rack and it was a very reasonable purchase. Instead of my bars strewn throughout my home gym they’re now tucked away on my wall when I need them.

Whatever you do, always try to buy high quality workout equipment for your home workout area. It will pay off in the long run and it will be the best money you could ever invest in your own health.
