TPS NFL Weekly Locks: Week 10

It took us half of the season, but I think it is safe to say we may finally have things under control after our second consecutive 3-1 week. The Green Bay Packers were an enormous disappointment, losing the game outright to a lowly Bucs team, but not even that was enough to dampen our spirits as the rest of week nine’s games were a success. Carolina took an early lead, and although they squandered it late, they were still able to hold on and cover the 13-point spread. A late touchdown pass from Rivers to Vincent Jackson gave the Chargers the cover, and the outright victory (as we also predicted). As for the Monday night game between the Broncos and Steelers, it was close, but as we preached, the Steelers defense did enough to keep it under the 40 1/2 total. The back-to-back winning weekends now bring us to 18-18 on the year. We are now back at the .500 mark, and with half the season remaining there is still plenty of time to build up the winnings.

Here is how we see things shaping up in the following four week 10 games.

Game: Denver Broncos @ Washington Redskins

Pick: Denver Broncos -3 1/2

Reason: It has been a rough season thus far for the Washington Redskins, and with eight games still to play that likely will not change anytime soon. Currently sitting at 2-6, their only wins have come against the St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while they have lost to the likes of the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs. This week they return home to take on the Denver Broncos who have lost two straight since starting the season 6-0. They will be looking to bounce back in a strong way and prove that their stellar first half record was no fluke. Denver’s run defense has been exposed somewhat in recent games, but that should not be a worry against a Washington team that will be without starting running back Clinton Portis (concussion), and backup Ladell Betts is also nursing a sprained ankle (his status remains questionable). With their offensive line also experiencing several injuries, it may be a long day for quarterback Jason Campbell and the Redskins offense. Expect the Broncos to cover this rather low spread.

Game: New Orleans Saints @ St. Louis Rams

Pick: New Orleans Saints -13 1/2

Reason: The Saints ground defense has been somewhat exposed recently and they have struggled to assert themselves early against the Dolphins and Panthers, but that should not be much of an issue when they travel to the Edward Jones Dome to take on the 1-7 Rams. St. Louis currently ranks 22nd against the pass, but things could be a lot worse had teams not been able to run the clock out at the end of games after establishing rather large leads. Drew Brees will get the air show under way early and with Marc Bulger expected to do a lot of passing down the stretch, you can count on the Saints defense to add a score or two of their own, as they have done throughout the year. That should be more than enough to outscore a poor Rams offense and cover the 13 1/2-point spread in the process.

Game: Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders

Pick: Under 37

Reason: This may be one of the worst games to bet on as doing so would force you to sit and watch two horrible offenses take on each other. So what is the best way to make such an experience enjoyable? Bet the under! Both the Chiefs and the Raiders have allowed an average of over 25 points against per game, but they each rank 30th and 32nd respectively in scoring offense. What this means is while their defenses may be susceptible, that is only the case when they are playing teams with offensive capabilities above what you would expect from division II NCAA schools. The Chiefs have been able to score an average of 15.8 PPG while Oakland has posted an embarrassing 9.8 PPG through their first eight games. Unless it is the defenses doing the scoring, don’t expect much to come out of this comedy of errors. Go with the under here.

Game: Atlanta Falcons @ Carolina Panthers

Pick: Carolina Panthers -1 1/2

Reason: With the Saints currently sitting at 8-0, top spot in the NFC South may already be decided, but that has not taken away from the importance of this divisional match up between the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons. Both clubs are still in the wild card hunt and will be looking to make an impact down the stretch in hopes of securing a playoff birth. The Panthers have come on strong in recent weeks, beating up on the Arizona Cardinals before losing a close one to the Saints. Now they will take on the Falcons in a rematch of their week 2 game looking for revenge, and with their running game back on track we think they will get just that. Both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have been great in recent weeks as the Panthers continue to look more and more like the team that won their division last season. If they can establish that ground attack once again in this one, it should be enough to put away the Falcons 24th ranked run defense. Look for the home team to take this one in what shold be a close game.

LeBron James Shoes Say “New York – 27″, Cleveland Trembles

The summer of 2010 is coming closer and closer. The entire basketball community is waiting and speculating about what will happen. You see in 2010, the big draft class of 2003, along with a few other superstars, will be free agents. That includes the likes of Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer, Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson and others. The entire power structure of the NBA could shift, or nothing at all could happen. The anticipation is building and building. As great as all those names are, the one name that everyone is watching is LeBron James, the man who respects the game and is trying to remake it in his own image..

All of Cleveland is holding their breath. Cavs fans’ years of pain and suffering finally ended in 2003 with the arrival of LeBron. Although he hasn’t won them a championship yet, their years of poor play have finally been replaced by something to get excited about. Unfortunately for Cleveland, the prognosis doesn’t look good.

LeBron has shown time and again that he likes New York. Between his friendship with Jay-Z (part owner of the New Jersey Nets), and his love affair with the Yankees, it doesn’t look good for Cleveland. Now things get even worse. LeBron wore shoes that literally said “New York” on them the other night. They are commemorative of the Yankees World Series win. If the city of Cleveland is looking for a sign about what will happen this summer, this might be the one to look at. James has reassured fans that he has made no decisions yet regarding his impending free agency, especially avoiding the question of whether he would go to New York to play for the Nets or the Knicks, but these shoes seem to make things pretty clear.

We won’t know for sure until this summer, so we can only wait and see.

Charles Barkley Wears “Whiteface” Sammy Sosa on TNT (Video)

Sammy Sosa was back in the news recently after pictures of him surfaced on the internet featuring a significantly paler looking complexion. His official explanation for his paler face was that he is undergoing a skin rejuvenation procedure which makes his skin look like that temporarily.

Anyways, the media storm surrounding the photos has led to a classic Charles Barkley moment. Barkley has always kept us entertained on Inside the NBA on TNT, but this clip of him with Ernie and Kenny really takes the cake. In preparation for a segment they were doing on what the analysts would look like if they had the same “skin rejuvenation” done on them, Charles was sitting on the set with a make-up artist applying “whiteface” to him. It’s one thing when Derek Jeter dresses as a homeless man, its another when someone dresses as another race. Thankfully the cameras caught it all live when it was aired last night.

While Charles is acting like his goofy self, Kenny Smith shouts “Say it loud!” He then declares, “I’m black and I’m proud.” Barkley had to get his two cents in, walking perilously close to some inappropriate racial remarks. He asks Smith, “If I become white, am I allowed to eat chicken and ham-hocks?” Forget perilously close to inappropriate, that is wildly inappropriate. Only Chuck could pull it off though.

Even though Charles can say anything he wants and it seems to be okay, you have to think this one crossed the line a bit. Lucky for us we can just laugh at it and let TNT worry about the consequences.

Derek Jeter Dresses Like a Homeless Man

Don’t worry, Derek Jeter isn’t actually homeless. In fact, he could probably buy and sell you 100 times without batting an eye. The Jeter you see pictured here in a goofy, floppy wig is just being staged for a movie. Jeter has been loved by his adoring fans as Mr. Smooth and a gazillionaire since I could remember, which makes this photo all the more appealing.

Apparently he was dressed like this to film a new movie he will be making a cameo in. The movie is called “The Other Guys” and it is being done by Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg (formerly of Marky Mark fame). Jeter is coming off one of his best seasons ever, one in which he won a gold glove and helped his Yankees gain another World Series trophy to go with the others he helped them get at the turn of the century.

It’s always good to see an athlete or celebrity be able to poke fun at himself, and this is no different. Hopefully Jeter isn’t the only Yankee we get to see wearing a blond wig and dressed as a homeless guy. As we all know, the Yankee payroll is the highest in all of baseball, so those guys are far from homeless. It would be a pleasure to see all those cocky rich Yankees donning homeless gear.

Soccer Taunt Backfires on Goalie (Video)

Taunting. In American football, it is addressed by a penalty and sometimes a fine. In soccer it varies. As this video makes clear, not all taunts are created equal, however. Taunts can work in two ways, either the person taunting the opposing team backs it up, or he doesn’t. And then of course there’s the reaction. Sometimes you get punched, or sometimes this can happen.

In the case of this soccer goalie, he clearly drops the ball on backing up the taunt. The shooter, however, throws it back in his face with a great taunt of his own. Let’s set the stage. The place is the 2009 America East Men’s Soccer Championship Semifinal. The teams are Stony Brook and Hartford. The game has come down to a shootout.

The shootout is tied 1-1 when the shooter for Stony Brook steps up to take his shot. If you fast forward to about 20 seconds in, the Hartford goalie, instead of doing normal warm-ups, begins to do cartwheels back and forth in the goal. Perhaps it was not meant as a taunt, but it surely was taken as such by the Stony Brook player. An all-out soccer brawl wouldn’t have surprised me at that point. Of course the goalie blows it and the goal goes in, and that is when the real fun starts.

After not backing up his taunting, the goalie becomes subject to the shooter mocking his cartwheels. As the goalie tries to walk away, the shooter follows him around mimicking the cartwheels the goalie had done. That’s got to be pretty embarrassing. The moral of the story? Don’t taunt someone when you can’t back it up. Oh and another moral: definitely taunt a person who taunted you if you get the better of them. It is hilarious and emotionally satisfying I’m sure.

LeBron James Says #23 Should Be Retired by the Entire NBA

LeBron James is not just a talented basketball player, but he is also a student of the game. While he does have a fun side, like his desire to posterize a former President, he has always respected the rich history and tradition of the NBA and he showed it again yesterday. He responded to reporters’ questions by stating that he would love the opportunity to play with Michael Jordan, one of the greatest of all time.

After playing in front of Jordan in Miami last night, he went further than that though, saying he would even switch numbers. LeBron currently is number 23 on the Cavs, in honor of his childhood idol Michael Jordan. He claims he not only intends to switch numbers at the end of the season, but that he will begin a campaign lobbying for Jordan’s 23 to be retired throughout the league.

“I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon,” James said. “There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn’t Michael Jordan first.

“He can’t get the logo, and if he can’t, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I’m starting a petition, and I’ve got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.”

LeBron has been heralded as the next coming of Michael Jordan, the great NBA superstar of the next generation. His skills on the court have been reminiscent of Michael’s, posting amazing numbers and leading mediocre teams deep into the playoffs. That was similar to Michael’s early career, though Jordan broke through during the 1990-1991 season with the first of what would end up being 6 NBA Championships. Jordan also never got dunked on by a college kid while he was in the prime of his career, but I digress. LeBron has yet to win one, but the addition of Shaq to the equation may change that (it’s not looking good so far though). If LeBron can get to the top of the NBA mountain and win a few rings, then it is likely he will be considered one of the top 5 players of all-time, in that upper echelon with his idol Michael Jordan.

The Stat Line of the Night – 11/12/09 – Andrew Bynum

Kobe Bryant is the man on the L.A. Lakers. He may even be the man of the entire NBA depending on who you think is the best player in the league. Kobe had an incredible game last night –when doesn’t he– but one of his teammates did him one better: Andrew Bynum.

Bynum was an unstoppable force against the Suns on Thursday night. He cleaned the glass with 12 rebounds. He protected the paint and denied the Suns with 3 blocked shots. And while Kobe had more points, Bynum helpd lead the Laker offense with 26 points on 13-18 shooting from the floor. He missed all 3 of his free throws, so he could have tied Kobe for the team lead with 29 points. It all added up to a 121-102 Lakers win.

The Lake Show are now 7-1 and on top of the Western Conference. With Kobe and Bynum as the NBA’s new dynamic duo, the Lakers may be holding the trophy again come June. Bynum is now averaging 21 points and over 11 rebounds per game. For his dominating performance last night, he gets “The Stat Line of the Night” for 11/12/09.

Alizee Paradis is One Of The Hottest Female NCAA Athletes Ever

There have been a number of gorgeous female college athletes in the last ten years, but Alizee Paradis is by far the hottest. If you don’t believe me, take a look at the pictures and then try to argue otherwise. And if you say Jenn Sterger, you are wrong, since she was never an athlete (she’s still awesome though, just not an athlete).

She’s not exactly as bad-ass as that Lambert girl that bullied all the other girls during the soccer match. Alizee was Born in Quebec City on June 19th 1987 into a very athletic background. At the age of 10 she started playing tennis and was ranked as high as 7th in Canada through her career. In ‘04 she was recruited by Marshall University on a full scholarship, ending her college career at the University of Cincinnati. Alizee wasn’t just any regular college athlete either, she was a superb tennis player. It was at Cincy that she became her team leader, captain and also became an assistant there for a year. She has since switched her focus from tennis and has become a model. A sexy, hot model. What better kind is there?

Alizee walked the runways of Nolcha Fashion Week held in NYC and Alberta Fashion Week in Calgary, Canada. She also was chosen to become the new face of 442 McAdam.

The information about her only gets hotter and hotter. She was a gymnast when she was younger for almost 10 years and if you thought most athletes were not intelligent, you couldn’t be farther from the truth. While you were getting your degree in political science or communications, she actually graduated with a bachelors in finance and a minor in mathematics.
