The Cascada is a full four-seat, fabric-roof convertible which at nearly 4.7 metres in length is longer than an Audi A5 Convertible and positions Vauxhall in a sector that it hasn’t occupied since the 1930s. Cascada’s design team, headed by Brit Mark Adams, has created a car with classic lines, redolent of the Grandes Routieres (luxury touring cars) of a bygone age, matched with a capacious cabin and high-quality materials.

An all-new 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 170PS and 280Nm of torque, and marking the first outing of Vauxhall’s MGE (Mid-Size Gasoline Engine) family, will be the highlight of a three-engine range.

Crucially for weather-hardened UK buyers, there will be a high-quality fabric hood, with superior acoustic and thermal insulation thanks to a special layer of polyester fleece between the outer and inner linings. Making the Cascada a practical year-round car, the hood can be opened in just 17 seconds at speeds up to 30mph by an interior switch, or via a button on the key fob.

Cascada’s dynamic credentials will be highlighted by an immensely rigid body, which is torsionally 43 per cent stiffer than Vauxhall’s last open-topped car, the Astra Twin Top. It will also use the much-praised HiPerStrut front suspension which was initially used on the 325PS Insignia VXR.

Exterior Design

At 4697mm long and 1840mm wide (excluding mirrors), Cascada has a broad stance and elegant lines. With the top down, it has a perfectly clean profile with no roof-top cover or visible roll-over protection disturbing the car’s silhouette aft of the steeply-raked A-pillar.

The subtle ‘blade’ on the Cascada’s lower body side is mirrored by a sharp crease that swings upward and meets with the wraparound rear light cluster. A gently rising waistline is highlighted by a chrome strip that borders the cockpit, marking the boundary between roof-top and body.
‘Most convertibles look good with the top down, but many seem clumsy with their roof up,’ said Malcom Ward, Vauxhall’s British Director of Exterior Design. ‘Thanks to its high quality, aerodynamically clean soft top with a perfect, seamless profile, the Cascada cuts a fine figure when it’s closed.’

Sculpted with a purposeful power bulge, Cascada’s bonnet tops a deep front grille with bold chrome applications. The fog lights are carried in two overturned ‘sharkfin’ elements, which are enhanced by chrome inserts. Using LED technology, the daytime running lights in the headlamps and the rear lights incorporate Vauxhall’s ‘wing’ signature. In the rear, the LED modules are diffused to give a solid and sharp light signal – typical of cars in the premium sector. A chrome strip linking the boot-mounted light units matches a similar bar across the front of the car. The Cascada’s fabric roof can be specified in one of three colours, which can be coordinated with one of ten body colours.

From November 2012 the Corsa will also feature the new generation of Opel/Vauxhall -engineered manual transmissions with a more precise and smooth gear change action. The base transmission was comprehensively re-worked with new gears and modified parts, including the shift rods and fork shaft. The end result is high shift comfort and optimised operation in cold and warm conditions. New 185/65 R15 low-rolling-resistance tyres also add to the Corsa’s eco-friendliness.

Even with all this economy, performance is not compromised. Maximum torque of 190Nm is available between 1,750 and 3,250rpm. The 95PS turbodiesel allows the Corsa to accelerate from 0-62mph in 12.3 seconds and takes it to a maximum speed of 109mph

Opel/Vauxhall engineers also optimised the chassis for all Corsa variants (except the VXR Nürburgring Edition). The suspension and damper system now provides improved ride comfort, especially on rough roads and in urban areas at low speeds. However, this has not come at the expense of the Corsa’s impressive handling and agility.

‘In just five years, from the first Corsa ecoFLEX to today, we have been able to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions by 26 per cent, while at the same time increasing performance by over 26 per cent,’ said Mike Ableson, Vice President Engineering at Opel/Vauxhall.  ‘Our customers appreciate this, as does the environment.’

Completing the package is Vauxhall’s unique Lifetime Warranty which provides first owners with the reassurance of comprehensive cover for the life of their car, or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Using a brand new microsite, owners can enter their registration number and mileage, or select their car from a drop down menu, before finding out the exact price of service or repair work. The exclusive prices are guaranteed, and cover scheduled services, repairs and MOTs, and owners can select a Vauxhall MasterFit dealer at a time that’s the most convenient for them.

The new service allows owners access to both Vauxhall’s Fixed Price Repairs and Fixed Price Servicing, which start from just £99 including labour, parts and VAT. There are no hidden charges, and no surprises, so owners know what they’ll pay before they hand their car over. All work is carried out by Vauxhall-trained technicians using only genuine parts.

Vauxhall Cascada

Called Cascada, the model is 4.7 metres in length – more than 70mm longer than Audi’s A5 Convertible – with a full-size fabric roof, giving the car a classy and elegant profile, seen in the two official images. The roof can be opened or closed at the touch of a button, even when the car is moving at up to 30mph.

While Vauxhall has enjoyed considerable success in the past with open-topped models in the compact class, and has also commissioned open-topped versions of the Cavalier to be built by outside manufacturers, the Cascada is the first mid-size convertible that it has built and designed in-house since before the last war.

One of the last large, convertible-bodied cars Vauxhall built was the iconic OE-type 30-98, which could be specified with the company’s own Velox body (see pic). The 30-98 was the UK’s first catalogued 100mph car, and a serious competitor for Bentley’s 3-litre models in its day.

Cascada, a Spanish word meaning waterfall, is the third new name to be introduced by Vauxhall this year, following Mokka and ADAM, and each model is set to be incremental to the company’s current line-up.

Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director, Duncan Aldred, was enthusiastic about the lift each model offered the company: “Cascada, along with ADAM and Mokka, will bring a fresh and exciting dimension to our product line-up for customers. This year is genuinely a new chapter in Vauxhall’s long history, and I’m pleased that we’re able to enter the mid-size convertible sector with Cascada, and continue to refresh people’s perception of our great brand.”

The Maxxis British Drift Championship opened the show with an impressive sideways shakedown followed closely by the ridiculous stunts in the Animal Bike Tour stunt arena. Over in the Monster Energy Gymkhana GRiD arena competitors fought hard throughout the day battling it out for the chance to take on the hoonigan himself, Mr Ken Block at Flame & Thunder later this year. With displays, features, celebrities and top class motors wherever you turned, TRAX couldn’t fail to impress.

The contract win now means that 41 (or 80 per cent) of the 52 UK Police Authorities are using Low and Intermediate Performance Vehicles from Vauxhall.

“Vauxhall provides fit for purpose high quality products at a competitive price,” said Ray Forsey, The South Wales Police Authorities’ Fleet Manager. “North Wales Police will also be working closely with Vauxhall’s Special Vehicles to provide a specific containment cell in the Astra Sports Tourer so that the Welsh Police Authority can fully utilise their vehicles.”

As the largest supplier to the Police Authorities, Vauxhall will supply around 9,000 new vehicles over the next four years.

“A key factor in our success has been our approach to the supply chain,” said Dick Ellam, Vauxhall Special Vehicles Manager. “The only element we outsource is the delivery of the vehicle to the customer – everything else is done in-house under our control. We are therefore able to make savings for the Police fleets in the time it takes to bring their vehicles into service.”

Vauxhalls will now be supplied to North Wales Police, Dyfed Powys Police, South Wales Police, and Gwent Police.

Part of the deal also includes Vauxhall providing Movano Police Protected Support Units (PSUs). South Wales and Dyfed Powys Police are the first two authorities in Wales and the UK to order full turnkey vehicles from a vehicle manufacturer.

The options specified for the PSUs include Ballistic Windscreen, Radiator Protector, Rough Road Package, Deployable Windscreen Protection, Tyron Run Flat Tyre Bands, and a Double Cell.

How to get your car featured!

If you think your car has the style, shoot some photos of your car on your phone at TRAX and upload to Twitter or Instagram. You will then need to hash-tag the image: #FEATURETHIS.

Over the course of the event, the Speedhunters’ crew will be monitoring the hash-tag and picking out their favourite cars. Owners will be messaged on Twitter or Instagram to pick up free Speedhunters stickers at their stand based in the BDC paddock.

Rod Chong from Speedhunters says: “We are pretty sure that the TRAX crowd will be showcasing some feature-worthy machines on Sept 2nd. We’re fairly open minded when it comes to the type of car we want to photograph, it could be anything from a drift car, a track day special, a rusting rat mobile, air ride VW or Time Attack monster. The Vauxhall Ampera

The Ampera is the first electric vehicle suitable for everyday use. Its sophisticated propulsion system offers drivers all the benefits of electric driving, without any of the range anxiety associated with pure electric vehicles (EVs).  Electricity powers the wheels of the Ampera at all times, with a 16kWh lithium-ion battery pack feeding an advanced 150PS electric drive unit, delivering between 25-50 miles of battery-powered electric drive and zero tailpipe emissions.

But what sets the Ampera apart from other EVs on the market is its range extender, which boosts the car’s range by up to 310 miles. A small 1.4-litre petrol-fuelled engine/generator runs at optimum efficiency, generating enough electricity to power the electric motor (but not the wheels) and operates seamlessly as part of the Ampera powertrain. The results are a total driving range of up to 360 miles and, according to figures produced on the official European Test Cycle (ECE R101) the Ampera achieves 235.4mpg and combined tailpipe emissions of just 27g/km.

Vauxhall’s RoadTrip app, available for free on iPhone and coming soon on iPad and Android, provides drivers with a fast, simple way to track their business journeys.  The popular app, downloaded over 7,500 times to date, offers a range of smart features for tracking business miles, to make creating mileage claims quicker and easier.

The app allows users to choose from any vehicle from Vauxhall, as well as other manufacturers, enter a destination and plan a route. The clever app can then work out any mileage rates, what the journey will cost and any other likely expenses, without draining your phone battery by using GPS constantly to track your journey. Using premium materials and design cues often found in the luxury sector, ADAM is a three-door, four-seater that will be unveiled at this year’s Paris Motorshow, before appearing in UK showrooms early in 2013.

Classy, sophisticated and glamorous, ADAM retains design signatures from other Vauxhalls:  the crisp line around the door handle (GTC), the wing-shaped chrome grille bar (new Astra) and the blade shape in the lower doors. It will also be the first car in its class to have the option of LED daytime running lights.

• Extensive use of quality cabin materials, normally found in premium cars
• Drivers to benefit from internet-based apps and advanced safety systems

And it’s those very customers that Vauxhall is targeting with ADAM’s high degree of personalisation options. Available in three trims from launch – JAM (fashionable/colourful), GLAM (elegant/sophisticated) and SLAM (racy/sporty) – ADAM customers can effectively ‘build’ their own car.

There are almost unlimited visual combinations, with a wide variety of exterior colours – including two different roof colours – interior colours, equipment and materials. Customers can even choose their headlining, including an LED-lit starlight roof trim.

Mark Adams, Vauxhall/Opel’s Vice President of Design, summed up what makes ADAM unique: “No other car in this segment can be individualised as much as ADAM because we are offering virtually unlimited exterior/interior colour, fabric and kit combination choices. It’s very unlikely that you’ll find two identical ADAMs out there.”

Powertrains

Vauxhall’s ADAM will be offered with a choice of three efficient ecoFLEX four-cylinder petrol engines from launch: a 1.2-litre 70PS, plus two 1.4-litre engines with either 87PS or 100PS. All will be available with optional Start/Stop technology and will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Upscale equipment & smartphone connectivity

Unique in its class is ADAM’s new top-of-the-range infotainment system designed to support new media sources, including Bluetooth, as well as connectivity for smartphones with Android or Apple iOS software. This enables access to internet-based applications, including GPS navigation. The system uses a state-of-the-art seven-inch, full-colour touch screen display allowing quick access to a variety of on-board controls.

Round, mechanical clock-style instruments with chrome bezels mark a departure from those seen in other Vauxhalls, while ADAM customers can also opt for a heated steering wheel – another first in the class.

Advanced technology enhances safety and comfort

ADAM will break new ground in the A-segment, by offering technology normally only found in higher-end cars.

A prime example is the Advanced Park Assist II system, which will be an ADAM option never seen before in a Vauxhall production car. Drivers engage the system with a button on the dashboard and it tells them when they reach a parking space large enough to accommodate the car. The system then automatically steers them into the parking space, with the driver only needing to control the brake, clutch and gears. APA II uses ultrasonic sensors to work its magic, and always comes in combination with Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA).

Crisp ride and handling; ESP standard across range

Despite its compact dimensions of nearly 3.7 metres in length and 1.72 metres in width, ADAM’s footprint is relatively broad, with front and rear tracks of 1485 and 1478mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2311mm.

Front suspension is by MacPherson strut, with a compound crank system at the rear. Wheel sizes range from 16- to 18-inch, and cars that are specified with 17- or 18-inch rims come as standard with the lowered sports chassis. The latest generation ESP system is standard on all ADAMs, including a Hill Start Assist function.

Handling on urban roads is enhanced by a CITY mode, which increases the electronic power steering system’s assistance at lower speeds.

Initially available in a limited production run of 500 units, in both 3- and 5-door body styles, the Black Edition is based on the Corsa Limited Edition and along with the 120PS engine gains a black logo bar and new 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

A raft of sporty styling features including body-coloured front lower spoiler, side sills, rear lower skirt and rear spoiler turn the Black Edition into one of the sleekest Corsas yet.  Its looks are enhanced still further with front fog lights, dark style headlights and tail lights and dark tinted rear- and rearside windows.

Inside, sports seats, a leather-covered steering wheel, sports pedals, silver interior seat stitching and matt chrome air vent surrounds set the Black Edition apart from all other Corsas.

For those who wish to go even further upmarket, there is a broad range of innovative extras not offered by competitors such as the Touch and Connect infotainment system, climate control and adaptive forward lighting.

The Corsa Black Edition is on sale now priced at £15,995 for the 3-door and £16,425 for the 5-door model.
