Google Apps - Docs & Spreadsheets
In my opinion Google Docs & Spreadsheets, and other Google Apps will take over in the business world from Microsoft Office for it's powerful collaboration tools, and it's ability to be very easy to use by new users, very little training required. All of these pluses, will greatly reduce licencing and training fees employers now have to pay.

Playstation 3 In Europe
Playstation's European release in Europe will featured a watered-down system lacking the backwards compatibility features that American releases have featured. Only 1,000 PS2 titles are expected to be compatible with the initial release of the Playstation 3 in Europe. My opinion - PS3 still sucks, and is soon to be out of the gaming market all together.

AllofMP3.com Sued!
The popular Russian-based MP3 downloading website has been sued by the RIAA for the outrageous amount of $1.65 Trillion US Dollars! Not much to say about this other than my lowered opinion (of an already non-existant) opinion of the RIAA. Check out the article , and form your own opinions.
See the outcome of 10 years neglect of the inside of a PC tower , kinda brings into question the intelligence of the warranty stickers preventing you from opening your computer.
SWAT Raids 16 Year Old's Electronics
A high school student gets hit big time when the local police department seizes $20,000 worth of electronics after he changed "defeated" to "CRUSHED" on the school's website, after he was given the FTP password by his teacher!

Then i just describe how life's going, give me a voice message or e-mail letting me know how your Christmas has been so far. What did you get for christmas? How was dinner? These questions and more should be answered by every listener by phoning or e-mailing in. 'Nuff said.

What's with Apple giving preferential treatment to those that make a public spectacle about their problems with their service.

Office 2007's New Doc Format

Microsoft is famous for it, and now we have the difficulty of using these new DOC formats on older versions of Word, as well as any Mac Office applications, Microsoft promises tool to convert between formats, but in almost half a year.

Free File Converter

Everyone that uses a computer has at one point or another had the need to convert data from one file format to another. You've never found the perfect tool, and if you have, it likely costs well over $20. This new online tool I discovered today allows you to convert any file under 100mb to pretty much any other format out there on the web. Check it out: Zamzar is the best conversion tool I've found to date, and the best part is, it's absolutely free.

Myspace Woes

Despite Myspace's reptuation for being a safehaven to child and sex predators, they've recently taken action by hiring a contractor to develop a tool to compare user profiles to the United States Registered Sex Offender database, and delete or deny these profiles. I'm hoping for an article taking a look at it's effectiveness, but that's all we got for now.

James Kim's Family

If you can call yourself a worthy member of the tech podcasting community online, you've no doubt heard about the ongoing search for CNET Tech Editor: James Kim and his family who recently went missing in Oregon. Just recently, Kim's family was found near the highway, but Kim is still at large, please help out by telling the police anything you might know about this.

Hey Everyone, welcome to another episode of Tech on the Fly. Our intro song for this episode became part of the Public Domain in Canada recently: "How do you like your eggs in the Morning?" by Dean Martin and Helen O'Conner. Canadian Copyright law states that any recording made loses it's copyright status 50 years after the original broadcast or release of the recording. Since this song was recorded pre 1956, the song is public domain in Canada.

I heard this song originally on KatsCast, a podcast featured on Podshow featuring the life of Katja.

Diggnation Leak

The popular video podcast: Diggnation, released secret details about Apple's new iPhone set to release in January. Kevin Rose describes the phone as small, and in two capacities (4g, 8g). Possibility of Touchscreen, and two batteries, one for MP3 Player and one for the Phone aspect of the device. It is also rumored that the phone will employ a simpler version of the MAC OSX operating system to further enhance it's functionality. Internet Censorship

A Research group at the University of Toronto is creating a new tool to allow users in Countries that censor the Internet access to servers that will pass to them their webpages (uncensored) through the blocks imposed on their connection. Check out the article here.

Using Google as a Proxy

Google's translator tool contains an unique hack that allows you to use the service as a Proxy server to the blocked webpages you'd like to visit. This solution is for those users that can't install any sort of software on their machines, or have the inability to modify settings in their web-browser.

go to google.ca

click language tools

type your website into the website translator

click translate

modify the address so that &lang=sp|en to &lang=en|en

There you go! Now the website will be translated from English to English, and Google will first access the material, and then pass it to you via their servers.

If you'd like to set up a proxy for yourself in your web-browser (instructions for Firefox 2.0), visit this website and find an appropriate Proxy Server...

Click Tools > Options

Click the ADVANCED TAB

Click the NETWORK TAB

Click the SETTINGS button

Click Manual Proxy Configuration

Paste in the values obtained on the above site

Click Use these settings for all protocols.

Click OK

Voila! There you go, now any internet traffic you use on your computer will be routed through this remote proxy server.

Hey it looks like podshow's got some cool new font options for shownotes, who knew?

On today's show, we go through more topics than usual, apparently I'll be getting a new soundcard for xmas in an attempt to eliminate some this horrible background noise we're getting on the shows.

The Beatles will soon be the next added feature to the iTunes Music Store, about time! Check out the story here. The only reason they haven't been on the Music Store is because of Apple's feud with Apple Recording Company (the Beatles record label).

AllOfMP3.COM, the all popular downloading service for any type of music is scheduled to be shut down by the Russian Government. For a long time now, you've been able to download full albums at dirt cheap prices, now that's all coming to an end. See the official government document here.

Christina Curry was kind enough to introduce me to the band The Forces of Evil, a band on Myspace. On Today's intro song, I played their recent recording: Maybe I'm Wrong. Ska is great isn't it? First off, take a look at the new voice intro I've done, I didn't really like how I introduced shows before, so perhaps this works out nicer. First please forgive me for clipping at the beginning, I'm trying to work on some new settings for the microphone so it's in a better balance with the other audio and sound effects going on throughout the show, and I didn't realize it was peaking out until half way through the show, next time will be better, I PROMISE!

I saw a video documenting the transfer times and limits on the Zune, apparently they're decent, but I'm still not yet convinced of it's greatness in comparison to the iPod, which makes my life so much easier.

Lock Bumping (check here, pdf), is now a threat to pretty much every lock out there, it unlocks any door without actually damaging the internal mechanisms, so theres no evidence a door was broken through. I don't know, maybe we should all start picking up some digital locks to protect ourselves?

I play a recording from tonight's concert, from my Jazz Combo, we played All Blues by Miles Davis. I'm on Alto Sax, my friends Scott on Trumpet, Madalena on Piano, Rachel on Bass, David on Guitar, and Matt on Drumkit. It was an awesome night, and I'm still trying to recover from the stress... lol

DRM is on it's way out, the technology just doesn't make sense, or work.PS3 load times are rediculous, and Sony has made huge mistakes in the development of the PS3 console, therefore, no-one will buy it.Firefox 2 greatly slows down my computer's internet speed, no idea why? Episode 30 - Home Networks

For episode thirty, we've got a special on managing, optimizing, and protecting your home network so check it out by downloading from the various sources listed at the bottom of this post. I've got a slightly longer episode this time, and I talk about some important downloads and topics concerning maintaining and setting up your home network, so if nothing listen to the first twenty or so minutes. Anyways, enough talking, here's the shownotes for today's episode...

- Protect your children against unwanted websites and services. As well as restricting internet use etc with Phantom Technology's iBoss, or the Software alternative; NetNanny

- Monitor the computers on your network with remote desktop technology, and the free software solution; RealVNC

- When installing RealVNC install the server application to the computers you want to be able to view, and install the viewer application to your administration computer, from which you'll be able to see and control the rest of the computers on your network.

- Optimize your internet/lan connection with a piece of software called SG TCP Optimizer

- Check how fast your connection is currently going by using CNET's Bandwidth Meter

- Set up security restricions on your router by blocking ports on your firewall. Refer to previous episodes and shownotes for information on locking down your wireless network. I think I might do a show soon including a bit on the new encryption technology of WPA and explain the differences between WEP and WPA, so stay tuned for that.

Creating Your Home Network
- Share Files, Printers, Internet Connection
- Purchase your router (Linksys recommended) Wireless option available as well.
- Connect your Modem to your Router's WAN port using a standard CAT-5 network cable. (not crosswire)
- Make sure each computer is network-ready, have a PCI ethernet card installed if not. Wireless cards are also an option.
- Connect cat-5 cables between each computer and the numbered ports on the router.
- Laptops can have wireless built in, and requires a wireless router. (Wireless-G is strongest and best connection)
- PC's can also have wireless, just purchase a wireless PCI card instead of an ethernet card.
- Some computers have built-in ethernet (looks like a bigger phone port).
- Linking between 2 XBox's can be achieved by directly connecting them with a crosswire cat-5 network cable.
- Windows XP makes home networking much easier. Many settings are auto-configured, and network connectivity is automatically detected and enabled.
- The same router configuration can be used to connect more than two XBox's together.
