All of these pluses, will greatly reduce licencing and training fees employers now have to pay.

Playstation 3 In Europe
Playstation's European release in Europe will featured a watered-down system lacking the backwards compatibility features that American releases have featured. Only 1,000 PS2 titles are expected to be compatible with the initial release of the Playstation 3 in Europe. My opinion - PS3 still sucks, and is soon to be out of the gaming market all together.

Olivier's Quicktip
Foreign power voltages, and how you can stay safe.
Welcome to the Christmas edition of Tech on the Fly, coincidentally it is our 50th Episode, which is of course a cause for celebration, and also my 17th Birthday. Joy to the world, literally.
 Podsafe Intro Song
This song technically isn't podsafe, but it's in the Public Domain here in Canada. Sung by Frank Sinatra, Let it Snow is a popular Christmas Classic, pick a copy of it up at your local record store to here more of Frank.
 Sound Card In!
Finally, Tech in the Fly has background noise no longer. Christmas Day brought forth gifts including the new external Sound Card, thus eliminating the crappy background noise this show has suffered from the beginning, check out the sound card here if you're interested in getting one for yourself.
 Righteous Music Sharing
Jamendo uses the popular Bittorrent standard to give great music out for free, they've got lots of great independent artists all available for nothing to any user willing to download it. Check out the website at http://www.jamendo.com/

Just a reminder that the phone line, and e-mail address is open as usual with the following details...
+1(206) 33-TECH-4
alexkillby@gmail.com

 Multitasking On the PC
For those without Macs or multiple displays for your Windows PC, a new piece of software called IEX allows you to use an expose-style interface allowing you to pull up a grid display of your currently active applications. Get a copy here .
 Facebook Acquisition?
Despite Yahoo's offer of 1.6 billion US dollars, Mark Zuckerberg (the creator and ceo of Facebook) has turned down the proposal and has decided to go for more, and continue to run the company by himself. Here more about the history and details surrounding Facebook in the episode. Check out Facebook here .
Has Apple Computers made a typo on it's Macbook Keyboard?
 Midshow Podsafe Song
Today's Podsafe song is by a group we've featured previously: bill . Today we play their song: Sound Scientist. Surely to become a hit on the Podsafe Music Network, it was recorded by a group that has talent in so many different styles, they've created their own unique sound.
 Google Works for You?
Anyone that has ever run a corporate domain has struggled with the task of setting up domain software for users to use with their e-mail, and any other information stored on the webserver. Google has opened up it's software for free , you can now use the power of Google Spreadsheets, Contacts, Gmail, and much more on your own domain. Check out the link here, and get it today for your site. I'm considering handing out techonthefly.com e-mails with GMAIL through this, let me know if you have any interest.
 AllofMP3.com Sued!
The popular Russian-based MP3 downloading website has been sued by the RIAA for the outrageous amount of $1.65 Trillion US Dollars! Not much to say about this other than my lowered opinion (of an already non-existant) opinion of the RIAA. Check out the article , and form your own opinions.
See the outcome of 10 years neglect of the inside of a PC tower , kinda brings into question the intelligence of the warranty stickers preventing you from opening your computer.
SWAT Raids 16 Year Old's Electronics
A high school student gets hit big time when the local police department seizes $20,000 worth of electronics after he changed "defeated" to "CRUSHED" on the school's website, after he was given the FTP password by his teacher!

Then i just describe how life's going, give me a voice message or e-mail letting me know how your Christmas has been so far. What did you get for christmas? How was dinner? These questions and more should be answered by every listener by phoning or e-mailing in. 'Nuff said.

To close things up, I played my favourite Christmas Carol at the end of the show "Away in a Manger" through the talent of Mario Ajero. Check out his Podsafe Music Profile here .

'Welcome back everyone to a chilly winter's evening here at Tech on the Fly. We've got another great episode for you tonight, so be sure to download it ASAP. In this episode we feature Olivier's first audio bit, to which we hope he'll become a regular member of the show.

Podsafe Song

Our opening song for today's show comes from T he Cool Waters Band on the Podsafe Music Network. Click their link to check out more of their music available on the web. We played the song Hey Allright, and fine example of motivating music to start the show off with.

Office 2007's New Doc Format

Microsoft is famous for it, and now we have the difficulty of using these new DOC formats on older versions of Word, as well as any Mac Office applications, Microsoft promises tool to convert between formats, but in almost half a year.

Free File Converter

Everyone that uses a computer has at one point or another had the need to convert data from one file format to another. You've never found the perfect tool, and if you have, it likely costs well over $20. This new online tool I discovered today allows you to convert any file under 100mb to pretty much any other format out there on the web. Check it out: Zamzar is the best conversion tool I've found to date, and the best part is, it's absolutely free.

Podsafe Song

This episode's podsafe song comes from the 60's pop singer: Lesley Gore . Gore has recently released some of her new tracks on the Podsafe Music Network, congratulations! Gore was the artist behind timeless classics such as "It's my party and I'll Cry if I Want To", and "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows", be sure to listen to this track, and see what else she's got on the PMN.

Myspace Woes

Despite Myspace's reptuation for being a safehaven to child and sex predators, they've recently taken action by hiring a contractor to develop a tool to compare user profiles to the United States Registered Sex Offender database, and delete or deny these profiles. I'm hoping for an article taking a look at it's effectiveness, but that's all we got for now.

James Kim's Family

If you can call yourself a worthy member of the tech podcasting community online, you've no doubt heard about the ongoing search for CNET Tech Editor: James Kim and his family who recently went missing in Oregon. Just recently, Kim's family was found near the highway, but Kim is still at large, please help out by telling the police anything you might know about this.

Hey Everyone, welcome to another episode of Tech on the Fly. Our intro song for this episode became part of the Public Domain in Canada recently: "How do you like your eggs in the Morning?" by Dean Martin and Helen O'Conner. Canadian Copyright law states that any recording made loses it's copyright status 50 years after the original broadcast or release of the recording. Since this song was recorded pre 1956, the song is public domain in Canada.

I heard this song originally on KatsCast, a podcast featured on Podshow featuring the life of Katja.

Diggnation Leak

The popular video podcast: Diggnation, released secret details about Apple's new iPhone set to release in January. Kevin Rose describes the phone as small, and in two capacities (4g, 8g). Possibility of Touchscreen, and two batteries, one for MP3 Player and one for the Phone aspect of the device. It is also rumored that the phone will employ a simpler version of the MAC OSX operating system to further enhance it's functionality. Check out revision3.com for more information about the Diggnation Podcast.

Podsafe Song of the Week

Today's song was Panacea by *bill. They're featured on the Podsafe Music Network, check out their artist profile here.

-- I Feature the horrible Phone Line Jingle. Please send me something better ?

Internet Censorship

A Research group at the University of Toronto is creating a new tool to allow users in Countries that censor the Internet access to servers that will pass to them their webpages (uncensored) through the blocks imposed on their connection. Check out the article here.

Using Google as a Proxy

Google's translator tool contains an unique hack that allows you to use the service as a Proxy server to the blocked webpages you'd like to visit. This solution is for those users that can't install any sort of software on their machines, or have the inability to modify settings in their web-browser.

go to google.ca

click language tools

type your website into the website translator

click translate

modify the address so that &lang=sp|en to &lang=en|en

There you go! Now the website will be translated from English to English, and Google will first access the material, and then pass it to you via their servers.

If you'd like to set up a proxy for yourself in your web-browser (instructions for Firefox 2.0), visit this website and find an appropriate Proxy Server...

Click Tools > Options

Click the ADVANCED TAB

Click the NETWORK TAB

Click the SETTINGS button

Click Manual Proxy Configuration

Paste in the values obtained on the above site

Click Use these settings for all protocols.

Click OK

Voila! There you go, now any internet traffic you use on your computer will be routed through this remote proxy server.

Thanks again for listening to this episode of Tech on the Fly. Shoot me an e-mail or call the phoneline. BTW, Olivier has agreed to have a spot on each future episode of the show.

+1(206) 338-3244

alexkillby@gmail.com

Hey it looks like podshow's got some cool new font options for shownotes, who knew?

On today's show, we go through more topics than usual, apparently I'll be getting a new soundcard for xmas in an attempt to eliminate some this horrible background noise we're getting on the shows.

The Beatles will soon be the next added feature to the iTunes Music Store, about time! Check out the story here. The only reason they haven't been on the Music Store is because of Apple's feud with Apple Recording Company (the Beatles record label).

AllOfMP3.COM, the all popular downloading service for any type of music is scheduled to be shut down by the Russian Government. For a long time now, you've been able to download full albums at dirt cheap prices, now that's all coming to an end. See the official government document here.

Christina Curry was kind enough to introduce me to the band The Forces of Evil, a band on Myspace. On Today's intro song, I played their recent recording: Maybe I'm Wrong. Ska is great isn't it? Check out the band's website here. You can also check out Christina's current podcasting quest; BGBlast, along with the co-hosts Martina Butler, and Schmee.

Youtube and other popular online social video sharing websites is starting to get a real hold on the video market. 9% of people say they watch online video's each day, and even more claim they watch less regular Television because of it. Check out the story here.

Linux & The Open Source Community is not well known to the typical computer user, learn more about it in this hour-long documentary currently hosted by Google Video. I've seen lots of these documentary's pop up all over the internet. Check out the video here, it's really quite interesting.

Fonts have always been difficult to create, do you even know how? You typically need to download some 3rd party shareware application to get anything accomplished, but hidden in Windows XP all these years has been the ability to do just this, for absolutely nothing. To bring up Windows' integrated font editor...

Click your start Menu

Click RUN

Type in "eudcedit", and hit ENTER

PRESTO!
First off, take a look at the new voice intro I've done, I didn't really like how I introduced shows before, so perhaps this works out nicer. First please forgive me for clipping at the beginning, I'm trying to work on some new settings for the microphone so it's in a better balance with the other audio and sound effects going on throughout the show, and I didn't realize it was peaking out until half way through the show, next time will be better, I PROMISE!

Podshow just updated their entire website with a new interface inspired by the comments of the users that use it. In my opinion, they've done an awesome job, love the new site. Check it out at podshow.com

Podsafe song of this episode: Liberty Jones by The Shakes, check out their page here on the Podsafe Music Network.

I saw a video documenting the transfer times and limits on the Zune, apparently they're decent, but I'm still not yet convinced of it's greatness in comparison to the iPod, which makes my life so much easier.

Lock Bumping (check here, pdf), is now a threat to pretty much every lock out there, it unlocks any door without actually damaging the internal mechanisms, so theres no evidence a door was broken through. I don't know, maybe we should all start picking up some digital locks to protect ourselves?

I play a recording from tonight's concert, from my Jazz Combo, we played All Blues by Miles Davis. I'm on Alto Sax, my friends Scott on Trumpet, Madalena on Piano, Rachel on Bass, David on Guitar, and Matt on Drumkit. It was an awesome night, and I'm still trying to recover from the stress... lol

Thanks for listening call into the hotline, I'll cya nexttime.

1(206) 666-4835

alexkillby@gmail.com

DRM is on it's way out, the technology just doesn't make sense, or work.PS3 load times are rediculous, and Sony has made huge mistakes in the development of the PS3 console, therefore, no-one will buy it.Firefox 2 greatly slows down my computer's internet speed, no idea why? My Suggestion: wait a few months for the bugs to be worked out before switching over to Firefox 2.I play the Scott and Telly show promo again, just because I love the show so much.Podsafe Song of the Week: Pendulum by the Toasters.

For episode thirty, we've got a special on managing, optimizing, and protecting your home network so check it out by downloading from the various sources listed at the bottom of this post. I've got a slightly longer episode this time, and I talk about some important downloads and topics concerning maintaining and setting up your home network, so if nothing listen to the first twenty or so minutes. Anyways, enough talking, here's the shownotes for today's episode...

- Protect your children against unwanted websites and services. As well as restricting internet use etc with Phantom Technology's iBoss, or the Software alternative; NetNanny

- Monitor the computers on your network with remote desktop technology, and the free software solution; RealVNC

- When installing RealVNC install the server application to the computers you want to be able to view, and install the viewer application to your administration computer, from which you'll be able to see and control the rest of the computers on your network.

- Optimize your internet/lan connection with a piece of software called SG TCP Optimizer

- Check how fast your connection is currently going by using CNET's Bandwidth Meter

- Set up security restricions on your router by blocking ports on your firewall. Refer to previous episodes and shownotes for information on locking down your wireless network. I think I might do a show soon including a bit on the new encryption technology of WPA and explain the differences between WEP and WPA, so stay tuned for that.

- Podsafe Song of the Week: Taste It - Casey Desmond

- Apple Computers has won the battle between the Beatles recording company (Apple corps) in a dispute regarding Apple computers having the music store and use of the "apple" logo.

- The english translation of the Windows XP End-User License Agreement

- Get in touch by calling the hotline (1-206-666-4835), or by e-mailing in at alexkillby@gmail.com

That's all for this week, of course you have the typical avenues for acquiring your own free copy of this episode of Tech on the Fly.
Hey Everyone, Tech on the Fly Episode 17 is out, two days early I might add, just don't mind the introduction saying the scheduled release date. I've kinda worked on more content for this episode, and structured it specifically for ad inserts with some help from my comrados El Nacho (http://www.elnacho.com/), so give it a listen and don't forget to tell me what you think! In This Episode...

- Learn how to create your very own blog
- Don't hunt for MSN Beta 8
- Easily transfer your photos to the internet
- Secure your wireless internet
- Better organize your iTunes Music Library

Songs in This Episode
- SUMMERTIME by Brother Love
- Chopin Nocturne Op 15 No 2 by In The Hands
- Thanks again to the podsafe music network (http://music.podshow.com/)

Heres the checklist for securing your wireless internet (As Promised):
- Don't broadcast your SSID
- Secure using a WEP 128bit key
- Lock down your MAC Addresses
- Just to correct myself, the MAC address is specific to the network adapter, sorry for the stumble (~_~).

Heres some sites that might give you some more tips on how you'd go about doing these on different types of routers, in addition to even more ways to secure your wireless signal.

support/wireless_secure.htm
- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/
using/networking/learnmore/bowman_05february10.mspx
- http://www.quepublishing.com/articles/
article.asp?p=339052&rl=1

As always you can download this episode through the feed chicklets at the bottom right, through iTunes by searching "tech on the fly" or by clicking below or going to the episodes page for a direct download.
