I’ve been looking for some new games to enjoy on my iPad. There are a fair amount out there but I’ve also noticed that many are simply iPad versions of original iPhone titles (aka ports). I wanted something new.

“What if you could transform lead into gold? Or distil the essence of life itself?…”. That’s the opening line in the description for Master of Alchemy HD. As far as openers go, that one is definitely an attention grabber. Using the practices and methodology of medieval days gone by, you’re tasked with taking on the Mechanologists and bringing alchemy to supremacy.

Star Wars is definitely one of the pillars of science-fiction. The original trilogy revolutionized how the general public perceive the genre and has left it’s trail in almost all areas of life – be it toys, CCGs, books or videogames. Even on the iDevice the franchise has left quite an impression, with Star Wars The Force Unleashed and the recent Star Wars: Trench Run being the most noteworthy titles. And now they have been joined by arguably the best Star Wars game on the iDevice to date in the form of a Tower Defence – Star Wars: Battle for Hoth.

Time to boot up Plants vs. Zombies

Ever wondered how all previous iPhone models stack up against the iPhone 4 in terms of performance?  Two fellas (Chris Pinnoch and Mike Hellas) have created a neat video comparing the time it takes each iPhone to boot up apps like Plants vs. Zombies, Google Earth and Seadragon Mobile. Device shutdown and startup times are also recorded. Surprisingly, the iPhone 4 doesn’t top every task, with the original iPhone even coming out on top for one of them. What if you could magically turn your trusty ol’ iPod Touch into an iPhone of sorts? Would you still buy a 3GS or iPhone 4? Apparently, there’s a company in China (figures) that’s on the verge of releasing a slip-on case by Yosion Technology (the Apple Peel 520 case) that will do just that. According to Engadget:

Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, this adapter not only offers voice calling and text messaging (presumably requiring a jailbroken iPod touch for the apps; GPRS not possible yet), but it also doubles up as an 800mAh battery and provides 4.5 hours of call time or 120 hours of standby juice. We’re told this cheeky hack’s coming out in China as early as this week for somewhere between ¥300 ($44) and ¥500 ($74)

For all you iPod Touch owners, don’t get your hopes too high just yet. Seems Yosion doesn’t have an official website, nor is there a full spec sheet to gather more intel on this gizmo. Not to mention, Apple will never approve the necessary Phone apps to run with the Peel case, so it’s almost a given that you’ll have to jailbreak the iPod to get this hack to work. If this case does become reality however, it’s likely that scores of Touch owners will attempt to get their hands on one. Check out the demo video after the gap.

Late last year an indie team - 7^th Sense Studios – surprised everyone by releasing Fallen EP-1 (TMA Review), the first and probably only true Survival Horror for the iDevice to date. Unfortunately due to various reasons the team has been disbanded since and the sequel to the excellent game is delayed indefinitely. But it seems Hidden Games have picked up the flag and released Prisoner 84, a game similar in many respects.

As demand continues to outstrip supply, and with the limited availability of iPads in developing countries continue to jack up retail prices all over the world, India steps up to offer a low-cost contender. Fully supported by the their national government, India’s prototype is estimated to cost only $35, a fraction of the iPad’s cost. Design decisions which trim down hardware costs as well as open source software can bring down the price to as low as $20.

Just when you thought you’ve seen the last of the iPhone 4 antenna spoofs (see Darth Vader calling AppleCare), the guys over at JLE Productions have taken another stab at the iPhone 4′s reception issues. This is actually their third release after the Banned iPhone 4 and iPad promos and it’s one of the funniest Apple parodies out there. Open-world space shooting/trading games have not had much of a track record on the iDevice. On the upside there are the excellent Warpgate (TMA Review) and Space Miner: Space Ore Bust (TMA Review), though the former can’t really be called a space shooter and the latter isn’t quite open world. The title that could most closely fit the bill is Flatspace (TMA Review) but the poor interface pushes the game under. And now Sad Cat Software, authors of the highly acclaimed Project Phoenix (TMA Review) have released Ultraviolet Dawn to claim the genre for their own. Can they succeed?
