According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has already begun to place orders for the iPhone 5′s screen and they’re said to measure “at least” 4 inches diagonally, with production for the screens set for next month. In a separate report from Reuters that provides similar info, Apple indeed plans to use a larger screen for the next iPhone (“4 inches from corner to corner”) and has placed orders for the next display from LG, Sharp and Japan Display Inc. Reuters was more specific with manufacturing dates, with production for the screens to start as early as June, which would allow the iPhone to go into full production by August. Neither report though has given any indication if the iPhone’s current 2:3 aspect ratio (vertical) or width will be changed, though iLounge’s recent rumour pointed to an elongated 4″ screen that keeps the same dimensions widthwise of an iPhone 4/4S. If the above production dates are true, there’s a good chance we can expect the iPhone 5 to be released sometime in October, a full year after the iPhone 4S first hit the market. And by the looks of it, it appears more and more likely that the iPhone will finally ditch its 3.5″ screen for a larger one.

FPS fans can enjoy another installment of Gameloft’s popular sci-fi series this week with the release of N.O.V.A. 3.  Everything you’ve come to expect from the franchise is still present, and new to this release is the ability for multiple players to share a vehicle.  If boxing is more your thing you might consider Punch Hero from Gamevil.  It’s free, you can duke it out with players around the world, and equipping your player consists of buying things like beards and sunglasses.  Maybe you like puzzle / platform games instead?  If that’s the case check out LostWinds2: Winter of the Melodias, a game where you get to control the power of the wind and change the seasons at will.

Dave Hurban, a tattoo artist from Newfield, New Jersey has surgically implanted 4 magnetic studs into his left arm for this very purpose. But why? As he recently told Digital Trends, “I just thought it would be cool”. Showing the strapless watch to friends is definitely cool, but the procedure of getting those studs into his arm? Not so much. If you’ll recall, iLounge reported earlier this month that the iPhone 5 will have a 4 inch screen (while keeping its width), a metal back and be 20% slimmer than the iPhone 4/4S. With these specs in mind, Macrumors commissioned Ciccarese Design to create some high quality mockups of what the new iPhone could potentially look like. The results are quite stunning and certainly appear more plausible than the recent Liquidmetal Concept images. What’s interesting about the taller 4″ screen is that it could very well allow Apple to include an extra row of apps on the springboard, bringing it to a total of 6 rows if you include the bottom dock. And according to iMore’s sources, Apple hasn’t decided yet on the final design for the iPhone 5, so it’s possible that the final product will have completely different dimensions. Sparrow, the best 3rd party mail app on the iPhone, has been updated with 4 new features. First up is Message Navigation, where you can now swipe up and down between messages (previously only conversions were supported). When moving between messages, you’ll clearly see the email’s subject heading, whereas in conversions, the person’s name will be displayed. Also new in the 1.2 update: compose emails in landscape mode, edit and create folder/labels from within the app and support for 9 total languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Russian and Chinese. As for the issue with Push Notifications, it appears that Apple will not grant the Sparrow team an exception to use the VoIP API for notifications. From the Sparrow blog:

SPDIF is no longer the iPhone's Holy Grail

Today, I’d like to briefly introduce two remarkable iDevice accessories: the Cypher Labs AlgoRhythm SOLO and the Venturecraft GoDap Unit 4.0, both portable units that output SPDIF digital signals to high-end audio equipment. iPhone zeitgeist, marked as it was by cute bunny-eared cases, vibrators, and farting apps, has obviously evolved.

There’s a bit of irony in the game’s title, because I’m pretty sure going down in a hailstorm of bullets is anything but blissful.  The slightly odd name aside, however, once you start playing DoDonPachi Blissful Death you’ll feel right at home if you’re a fan of Cave.  If you peruse their titles on the App Store you’ll note they primarily do one thing, but they do that well – scrolling shooters.  To be even more specific, their area of expertise seems to be the “bullet hell” shooter, though from that perspective Blissful Death is a bit milder than most of its type.  That’s good news for me, because I’m terrible at bullet hell games.(...)

Instapaper, arguably the best read it later app on iOS (this despite the recent relaunch of the very capable Pocket), has been updated to v4.2 and adds even more substance to its already impressive list of features. The all-new “Fast Pagination Mode” improves upon the accuracy and page-turn speed thanks to the complete re-write of the old pagination code. And for those who love iBook’s page-turn animations, you’ll be happy to know that Instapaper now mimics the same effect when swiping from one page to the next (optional). Other new additions include a two finger swipe gesture to close an article, an “Auto” full screen mode and a draggable dot bar that replaces the old scoll bar in pagination mode. While Gameloft has been fairly quiet with new App Store offerings of late, the publisher has dropped the big one today with the release of the highly anticipated N.O.V.A. 3 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance. The first two N.O.V.A’s are widely considered to be among the best FPSes on iOS and the third instalment raises the stakes further by using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3. Among some of its technical highlights include “real-time shadow and lights, particle system and ragdoll physics”. Compared to the similarly styled Crysis games, N.O.V.A 3 takes place 4 months after the hit sequel and features 10 levels across the galaxy, multiple weapons and powers and 6 multiplayer modes that supports up to 12 players.

The game appears to be iDevice friendly as it supports even the iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd gen and iPad 1. N.O.V.A 3 (a 1.57 GB download) has already been released on the New Zealand App Store and should be making its way across other stores (including US) later in the day.
