Team Building at Villa Amparo Garden Resort in Samal

It has been two long years since we had our last team building. It's always been a wonderful feeling to take some time off from work and just the enjoy the whole day with your colleagues.

We decided to hold our team building at Villa Amparo Garden Beach Resort in Samal. I've heard about the place before but was not able to get a lot of information about it on the net since there are only few articles written about the resort.

The resort is located in Camudmud, about 20 minutes ride from the barge terminal. We rented a multicab to take us to the resort to make our trip convenient. There are also motorcycles willing to take you to Villa Amparo Garden Resort, just be ready because most drivers will ask for a higher fare. The road is rough and dusty.

Upon our arrival, their staff accommodated us right away and guided us to the resort. The place is not really beautiful upon entrance but when you go down, the real beauty is waiting for you! I immediately headed to the beach to check if its crystal clear, unfortunately it is not! A big disappointment since Villa Amparo Garden Beach Resort does not have a pool as alternative. However, do not dismiss the resort right away because they have a wonderful amenities. Despite the not so enticing beach I still consider the resort as very nice because of their amenities and facilities.

I so love the room where we stayed because it is nice and cozy. I love the fact that we are at the second floor because I get to have a bird's eye view of the entire place. Their air conditioned rooms are still very new and was very well constructed. The management did a wonderful job of maintaining the resort because it's very clean and their staff is always ready to help their guests. They have a huge open cottage for their day tour guests, the cottage is equipped with a cable television and a videoke machine. For those who wants to have a little privacy, there are small open cottages near the beach. Benches are provided for those who wants to get a tan or just simply wants to relax or sleep under the tree. One thing that I find cute about the resort is a space that they call "fitness zone". The resort is allowing their guests to bring food but of course there's a corkage fee! They have a cooking area so guests can bring raw food and just cook them in the resort.

I can't describe everything how I feel about Villa Amparo Garden Beach Resort. One thing is for sure, I enjoyed my stay there. The place is very nice and secluded, perfect for those who wants to have a total privacy. I would definitely love to go back there soon! I just hope the management will consider constructing a pool. Isla Reta in Talicud Island - Samal

Whenever Samal is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the Pearl Farm Beach Resort. Why not? After all, it’s probably the most famous beach in the Island Garden City of Samal. However, not everybody can afford the beach because it is not for budget tight travelers. Beauty comes with expensive prices and that’s what Pearl Farm is all about!

However, there’s this one beach that is quietly making a name of its own as of late. The beach that I am talking about is none other than Isla Reta which is located in Talicud Island. It is slowly gaining a lot of attention from tourists not only because of its naturally clear waters and powdery sands but because of its budget friendly rates as well. Isla Reta offers its guest a great experience without spending too much money. The soothing location of the beach makes it a perfect get away!

The last time I visited the beach was back in 2008. Isla Reta is a much laid back beach. You need to bring food because there’s no restaurant in the area. There were only few rooms for those who want to stay overnight. Their rooms are not as convenient because it’s not air-conditioned and sometimes has mosquitoes inside. There are no beddings nor need towels and you to share bathroom with other guests. In short, the beach is not recommended for an overnight stay back then, but we still opted to spend the night over. Some of us slept in the room while some slept in the hammock and in the tent.

Hopefully after four years, the beach owner made some improvements in their amenities and facilities because it will definitely attract more tourists if they can offer their guests convenient room accommodation.

It is just easy reaching Isla Reta. From Sta Ana Wharf, there’s a boat that will take you to the beach directly. Just ask the people around the pier for the name of the boat. The first trip going to the beach is 8:30 in the morning while the last trip going back to Davao City is 3 in the afternoon. Boat fare is Php80 per head. Take Time Out at Blue Waters Resort in Samal Island

Blue Waters is just one of the many wonderful beaches in the Island Garden City of Samal. Its turquoise waters and soft white sands and not to mention its tranquil ambiance is ideal for those who wants to get away from the noise of the city. The beach is about 10 to 15 minutes boat ride from the City of Davao.

Getting there is easy; you can both ride a taxi or public utility jeepneys and just ask the driver to drop you off in Davao Beach Club where the pump boat going to Blue Waters is waiting. The first trip is as early as 7 in the morning and the last trip is at 5 in the afternoon.

I have been to Blue Waters three times already and every time I visited the place there’s always something new. The last time I was there was August of last year to celebrate my birthday. The place has improved a lot since my last visit. One major improvement was the beach itself. During my second visit, there were still a lot of corals present in the beach which made swimming not so enjoyable because of the corals that you might step on. However this time, the corals seemed to have been taking cared of.

The cottages have been fully constructed too. They now have several cottages for all of their guests who will be staying overnight. The cottages were beautifully made and clean. We rented the Apartel (which by the way was still under construction the last time I was in the place). The room is air-conditioned. It is big and clean. It has a comfort and shower room inside. They have friendly staffs too!

What made me visit the place several times is the fact that it is not too crowded. I am able to make the most of out my stay there because not a lot of people are going around the place. There are areas that I can have a moment of silence or just blankly looking at the sea.

The only down side of Blue Waters is that it is a bit expensive. The food in their restaurant is not too budget-friendly. The guest can bring food but they have to pay corkage (which is also a bit expensive). Other than that I have mentioned, I highly recommend the place for a nice and relaxing vacation!

Surigao Adventure

Surigao Del Sur is blessed with a lot of natural wonders! If one wants to be awed by the beauty of nature, then head on to Surigao Del Sur. It is located in the CARAGA region which is about 5 to 6 hours drive from Davao City. Mode of transportation can be through commercial buses/vans or airplane if you are traveling from Luzon or Visayas.

For years, I have wanted to visit the place and see two of their famous attractions – the Tinuy-an Falls and the Enchanted River. Alas! The day that I have been waiting finally came, together with my friends and some other travelers, we explored Surigao. We rented a van that we could use for the whole duration of our trip. Just a tip to those who wants to go to the place, if you don’t have your own car, better rent a van because it’s going to be a long and bumpy ride going to Tinuy-an Falls and Enchanted River.

Our first stop was at the Tinuy-an Falls. Getting to the falls was not an easy ride. From the highway, you need to travel for 13 kilometers more (rough road all the way). However, the long drive was all worth it because the falls is just truly God’s gift to nature. Dubbed as the “Little Niagara”, the falls is 95 feet wide and has three cascading falls which when combined will reach up to 180 feet tall. The water flowing from the falls forms a white curtain like image which makes it a beautiful scene to look at. We climbed up to the second level of the falls and from there it was just a perfect view. One can also see a rainbow across the water between 9AM to 11AM in the morning so be sure to prepare your cameras. Through the years, the falls has become one of the best tourist destinations in the city of Bislig.

Our next stop was at the Enchanted River, another famous tourist destination in Surigao Davao Del Sur. It is 12 kilometers away from the highway and just like our previous stop the road was rough. The river has color blue and green water. The blue colored water is the deepest part of the river while the green colored is the shallow part. Local folks say that such color of the water is due to a combination of fresh and saltwater of Hinutuan Bay. There were a lot of travelers when we got there and the place was almost full but that did not stop us from soaking the cold water of the Enchanted River. I need to borrow a life jacket since I don’t know how to swim (darn, I badly need to get a swimming lesson!) nonetheless I enjoyed my limited swimming time.

Then we headed to our next destination, Joan’s Beach Resort in San Agustin where we spent the night over. The beach was not as good as compared to the beaches in Samal Island but good enough to relax our tired body. It does not really matter to me because the beach was not really our main stop over. The following day, we headed to our main stop over which is the Britania Group of Islands! We rented a motorized boat to take us to 5 different islands (I can only remember the name of two islands – Hagonoy Island and Naked Island). The sea was very still and calm for the whole duration of our island hopping. I decided not to plunge into the water as I wanted to take more photos of every island.

Then it was time for us to travel back to Davao City. Our stay in the province of Surigao was amazing and full of laughter. Another chapter of my book of travel has been written!

Oh by the way, we went to see Lolong on our way back to Davao!

Experience The Beauty of Nature at Eden Nature Park

Getting close to nature is never a problem when you go to Eden Nature Park.

Eden Nature Park is just one of the many tourist attractions in Davao City. It is about one and a half hour drive from the Davao City airport. It is located in Eden Bayabas, Toril. The park sits right at the foot of Mt. Talomo. The place is cold especially at night; this is because it is 2,650 feet above sea level. It also offers a best view of the entire Davao City. The park is surrounded by thousands of pine trees thus giving its guests a gentle climate and unsullied forest air.

The place is perfect for celebrating special occasions because of its relaxing ambiance.

The park offers various activities such as zip lining, horse back riding, trekking, fishing, swimming or just simply going around the park to see the beauty of nature.

Other must-see places of the park are the Amphitheater, Lola’s Garden, Flower Garden, Plaza Maria, and Mayumi’s well.

Kids can enjoy the vast playground while the kids at heart can experience the thrill of riding the Indiana Jones. Various bird species as well as different animals can be found in the “Pasyalan”. Swimming pool is located at the peak of the park so you need to do some stretching first to prepare yourself for a long walk, you can opt to ride their shuttle though if walking is not really your favorite exercise.

For adventure lover, don’t forget to trek down their mountain trail and be sure to have enough stamina because it’s going to be a rough walk down the stretch.

For day tour guests, a shuttle is available to take you to different parts of the park. Then you can satisfy your hungry stomach with their sumptuous buffet lunch or you can go fishing and have your catch cooked by their standby chef.

You can opt to ride their official transportation or if you know the place, you can take a taxi (for convenience) or if you are the adventurous type, you can ride a jeepney (choose the Toril route) then tell the driver to drop you off at Mercury Toril branch, from there a lot of single motorcycles are waiting for you to take you to one Davao’s wonderful tourist spots.

Bohol Countryside Tour Experience

Bohol is a perfect place if you want to get close to nature. My friends and I was able to visit the place last March and we definitely want to go back there.

We were lucky enough to have a very accommodating tour guide though not really the best but he was gracious enough to give in to our few requests throughout our stay there.

We reach Bohol around 4 in the afternoon so we just opted to stay in our room since we are a bit tired of the long travel. We waited for the night to come for us to check out the popular Panglao Beach.

We spent three days and two nights in Bohol but it was not enough because there are a lot of wonderful places to go to.

To start it off, during our second day of tour we went to the following places:

Blood Compact Shrine – this is where the first treaty between the brown and white races. Involved in the treaty was the conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and local chieftain Rajah Sikatuna. The treaty was done through drinking wine with mixed blood thus calling it “Blood Compact”.
Baclayon Church – the church was built during the 16^th century during the Spaniards reign. It is one of the oldest stone churches in the Philippines. In the church, you can see the face of Father Pio and the Mother and child painting.
Albur Python – probably the biggest snake I’ve seen in my entire life.
Tarsier – I finally get to see one of the most endangered species of the country.

Then we had our lunch in Bohol’s famous Loboc River. It was a very nice experience and the food was superb. While eating, the barge will take you to the other side of the river and you get to see all these wonderful sceneries. Very relaxing!

Just when we thought we’ve seen it all, our tour was far from over. Our next stop would be at the following places:

Butterfly Sanctuary – where you can see different kinds of butterflies. You also get to know little history about the tiny feathery creatures. One thing that I can’t forget about the place was how funny their staff was.
Bilar Man Forest – it’s a forest made by man. I felt like I was driving along the countryside part of America. All these tall pine tress (not quite sure if it’s pine trees though) they are just wonderful to look at.
Ship House – the one that was featured in Rated K. The house was uniquely built. It has a very nice interior design and a very ship like (that's why its called ship house in the first place), it’s as if you are aboard of a real ship.
Chocolate Hills – our last stop was the famous Chocolate Hills. The view from the top was breathtaking. The experience, you can’t trade that with anything material!

After Chocolate Hills, we called it the day. We headed back to Alona Grove Resort where we were staying. The resort is located in Panglao.

Panglao is famous for its white sand beaches and many tourists flock to the place everyday.

Our third day in Bohol was equally fun and exciting. We went to the following places:

Bohol Bee Farm – natural and organic food is being served in the place. Not to mention you will be rubbing elbows with the bees (I exaggerated that one a bit).
Hinagdanan Cave – the most famous cave in Bohol. It has a deep lagoon and naturally lighted cavern. You can see large stalactites and stalagmites.
Dauis Church – another beautiful church.
Bayoyoy – he was featured in Rated K too. Probably the smallest man in the Philippines.

So that’s it! That concluded our trip to Bohol. Three days was not enough because I know there are still a lot of wonderful places to go. Nonetheless, we had so much fun and another experience that will be forever treasured!

Yet despite Taal's obvious dangerous attributes, it has maintained its reputation as one of the Philippines major tourist attractions and photographed views. Plitvice Lakes: Croatia's Finest

Somewhere halfway between the capital city Zagreb and Zadar on the coast, and in the mountainous region of Licko-Seniska county, lies Croatia's largest national park and the oldest national park in Southeast Europe. This lush valley of 16 turquoise interconnected lakes, laced together by a series of waterfalls, separated by natural dams of travertine, set in a deep woodland and miles of pleasant wooden-plank walks that follow the rumbling water is what makes this lake outrageously phenomenal. A place truly incredible and worth a million words... one of nature's finest – The Plitvice Lakes.

Discovered In 1949, Plitvice composed of 19.5 hectares of woods, lakes and waterfalls became the first national park of the Republic of Croatia. In 2000, the national park was expanded by a further 102 km². The Plitvice lakes are enclosed by the Mala Kapela mountain in the west while the eastern side are enclosed by the Plješevica mountain, which also represents the border to Bosnia and Hercegovina. The two largest lakes of the park Prošćansko jezero and Kozjak cover about 80 percent of the overall water body area. These lakes by the way, are also the deepest with a depth of 37 and 47 meters respectively. The 16 lakes that can be seen from the surface are clustered into the 12 Upper Lakes (Gornja jezera) and the four Lower Lakes (Donja jezera). Further, the lakes are renowned for their distinctive color ranging from azure to green, gray or blue. The colors change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight.

30 years later, Plitvice Lakes National Park was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in recognition of its “outstanding natural beauty” thus declared it with all rights as the World's natural inheritance. What sets Plitvice lakes apart from the other known lakes is the fact that they do not represent separated, stationary waters. “The lakes altogether have always been seen as one composed system of lakes.” And as a World Heritage Site, Plitvice maintains a pristine environment that is nearly primeval in its beauty. This is the reason why swimming in the lakes is strictly prohibited.

So when in Plitvice, you have three options for exploring the site - you can either walk through the park and look for wildlife as you hike, or take an electric boat to take you from one side of the lake to the other or ride on a shuttle bus (panoramic train) to take you to a particular route to the park. Whichever way you want it, they all offer different views and a different experience while in Plitvice. Best of all, Plitvice Lakes National Park is open all-year round.

The Amazing Loch Lomond

Many of us live in cities with all the crowds, stress, noise and dirt in the environment. Most probably we have not often come across nature, searched for it or even be one with it. Loch Lomond is a freshwater Scottish “loch” lying on the Highland Boundary Fault, the boundary between the lowlands and highlands of Central Scotland. Measuring 27 and a half square miles, it is the largest single inland waterway in Great Britain (by surface area), the second largest lake in Scotland and most probably the most famous lake after Loch Ness. It is now part of the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, Scotland's first national park and most spectacular visitor destination. The loch has 30 or more other islands, some so small that they disappear when the water levels are high, and others large enough to be (sparsely) inhabited. One of the loch's islands, Inchmurrin is the largest island in the British Isles, while Inchconnachan island is home to a colony of wallaby (marsupial), its young is known as “joey” just like many other marsupials.

The very name Loch Lomond depicts nothing but nature in perfection. The main tourist focus is on the western shore, around Balloch. This is the place to head for boat trips and home of the Maid of the Loch, an authentic paddle steamer and utterly unique venue for events and functions. Further, development is attracting large numbers of visitor like the this magnificent addition to the area, the Mull Railway, which will link Balloch and Loch Lomond Shores. Lake Nakuru in Kenya Africa

Situated in the heart of the Great Rift Valley 160 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, Lake Nakuru is a bird watcher's paradise. A unique game-viewing venue and a notable spot for the Rothschild giraffe and home to the black and white rhinos. The park boasts the most number of leopard per square kilometer than any park in Africa. Nakuru officially became the shelter for protection for these endangered animals in 1987.

Lake Garda or Lago di Garda or Benaco is the largest inland lake situated in a beautiful area in northern Italy between Venice and Milan and split among three regions: Lombardy on the western shore, Veneto on the eastern shore, and Trentino-Alto Adige on the northern shores. Lake Atitlán is volcanic in origin. It is the result of a land collapse filling an enormous cavity formed in an eruption 84,000 years ago known as Los Chocoyos. The continuing volcanic activity in the region built three massive volcanoes in the caldera flanking the lake.

The tallest of the three is Volcán Atitlán which lies on the southern rim of the crater, dominating the stunning lake with which it shares its name. Atitlán is a Mayan word that means “the place where the rainbow gets its colors”. While Volcán San Pedro and Volcán Tolimán lie within the crater, San Pedro is the oldest of the three and probably the most photographed of all Guatemala's volcáns because of its beautiful cone. Volcán Tolimán is the youngest among them, which began growing after San Pedro stopped erupting. Atitlán's summit takes about eight “long” hours to ascend, but definitely all rewarding to be able to reach the top, overlooking one of the world's finest attraction and Guatemala's Pacific Coast.

Lake Atitlán is also known as the “land of the eternal spring”. The climate is mild, cool at night and warm during the day with the springtime weather all year round, makes for an ideal climate. But for most of the locals who live there year round, the rainy season is their favorite time of the year.

Lake Atitlán is further characterized by towns and indigenous villages of the Maya people. And Panajachel or Pana, for short is the jewel of the highlands. Nestled beside Lake Atitlán, in a volcanic archipelago, Panajachel gives you one of the best views of the lake.
