Kuala Lumpur, or better known to the locals as KL, lies along the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is the heartbeat of Malaysia and serves as a cultural, commercial and transportation centre. This can be seen in the vast number of developments that have been cultivated in the past few years, and most of these can be found in KL.

For example, visitors will surely know of the Petronas Towers. When it was first completed in 1998, it was the world’s tallest building and offers one of the most spectacular views in the world. Visitors can travel to the 41st floor to the Skybridge where the two towers of the building connect. But as a warning to those who want to see the skyline from the highest point in the city – there is a set quota of visitors allowed per day, so a visit by 9am will be called for if they want to experience the spectacular views of one of the tallest buildings in the world.

Another factor that draws travellers from all over is the mosques. One of the most delightful of the many that can be seen in KL is the Masjid Jamek. Masjid Jamek was set in a grove of palm trees in 1907 where the tranquil onion domes and minarets of pink and cream make it a perfect place of worship. It is here where visitors to the city can experience the ultimate beauty of the city not only in the sense of the physical, but also in the rich cultural heritage it holds.

Another jump of time will see visitors visit the many world-class museums available in the city. While Europe is the place famous for a diverse range of offerings in museums, KL looks to be an up-and-coming on the list. The Islamic Arts Museum gives strangers to the local faith an insight into the culture, and all within the spacious and dazzlingly white domed building. The National Art Gallery also shows an offering of Malaysian culture with works by contemporary Malaysian artists displaying their works alongside fellow Asian and international art.

I first read about this new service from MAS I do not really bother to search further. I thought it is just another service that is just "melepaskan batuk di tangga". Well, I was 100% wrong.

First, I found the URL is damn easy to remember, http://flymas.mobi I landed at the home page. Very simple and straight forward menu to select.

I straight to Booking flight menu. What actually impressive me is the search function for the destination. You can just type the destination, and it will automatically remember to you the close match destination to your keyword.

Another impressive function to me, is the system actually remember your last visit destination choose. I clicked to the flight status, the system straight away stated the last destination selected. So, intelligent I must say.

What can I say, MAS again and again manage to impress me. Congratulation to the management of MAS for that.

Disruption internet services in Malaysia

There is a disruption in Malaysia's Internet services due to circuit faults on the submarine cable network linking Malaysia and Europe, and said the services would be completely restored by Dec 31. Customers using its Internet services may experience slow browsing.

Access to websites hosted in Europe and that those using other IP (Internet Protocol) services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and other critical business applications linked to Europe may also experience some service degradation.

The affected cables, on the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine network between Palermo in southern Italy and Alexandria in northern Egypt, were being repaired and that some of the links had meanwhile been rerouted to ease congestion.

During the restoration process, traffic to northern America may experience minor degradation while traffic to other countries is unaffected.

Themed “Malaysian Craft at its Best,” the event will be Harrods’ biggest promotion of Malaysian arts and craft. It will be held from the third week of February until the end of March.

Malaysian celebrity shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo and international fashion designer Datuk Bernard Chandran are expected to join a host of British VIPs at the glitzy reception.

Twelve top models from Malaysia and London will also take part in a batik fashion show featuring the latest designs from internationally-renowned Malaysian batik designers.

Vietnam Airline resumed service to Bangkok

Vietnam Airlines (VNA) Saturday resumed its service to international Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok as the Thai airport recommenced full operations after a long shutdown due to antigovernment protesters.

Twenty stranded Vietnamese passengers were brought home on the first flight that landed in Vietnam around 2 p.m. Two other flights, one from Hanoi and the other from Ho Chi Minh City, are scheduled to land at Suvarnabhumi Airport later in the day.

Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, one of Asia's largest, resumed full operations on Friday after a 10-day closure due to the political crisis.

MAS airline new ticketing office in KL Sentral

Malaysia Airlines will integrate ticketing operations for the Klang Valley at KL Sentral in Brickfields from Saturday. Operations at its former head office in Jalan Sultan Ismail will cease.

The move was part of ongoing efforts to consolidate direct distribution channel operations for ticketing and related services at one centralised location.

The premier ticket office at KL Sentral operates daily from 4.30am to midnight and offers a wide range of air travel related services for walk-in passengers.

These include reservations and ticketing, reissuance of tickets for travel on Malaysia Airlines and MASwings, Internet booking kiosks, Golden Holidays facilities and refunds processing.

A copy of the Quran and its intepretation will be made available in most hotel rooms in the country to allow both Muslims and non-Muslims to have “access” to the Holy book.

A pilot project recently where a copy of the Quran’s intepretation was placed in several five-star hotel rooms in the Klang Valley. The move received positive response from guests and members of the Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners (MAHO).

This move is not only because of the high number of visitors and tourists from the Middle East, but also because there are people of other beliefs who are keen to know more about what is said in the Quran, just as they are interested to know more about the teachings of other religions.

When staying on Koh Samui, what are the main differences between booking a resort-owned villa or a privately owned villa?

Socialising: On a resort you are not isolated from other people as you are when staying at a private villa. On resorts you get to meet other relaxing holidaymakers with whom you can have a chat and share your experiences. On a resort there is always somebody up and about and a simple ‘Good Morning’ may make their day as well as your own.

Privacy: Yet on a resort, and inside your villa, you can still have complete privacy to do your own individual thing, whether you want to party every night, read and relax or just sit back and watch TV or go on the Internet. In a private villa (provided the villa is not overlooked by neighbours) you can sunbathe naked if you wish whereas at a resort this would definitely be frowned upon.

Staff: Normally at a resort there are full-time staffs on hand daily – whose job is to change the linen and keep your villa tidy and spotless as well as clean around the resort generally. This service can be arranged at a private villa but it is not automatically included.

Security: Just like a private villa, with a resort villa you will have your own set of keys so that you can come and go whenever you like. On a resort you will normally see security staff patrolling the grounds, especially at nighttime whereas with a private villa this is very hard to come by. Normally, in a private-owned villa, you are on your own on this issue.

Pools: Some private villas don’t have a swimming pool at all but where there is, it’s obviously for your private use only. Resorts on the other hand always have one or sometimes two communal swimming pools, and for those families with youngsters it’s nice to know that other guests (and staff) are around to make sure they are safe. Also the swimming pools at a resort are cleaned daily, sometimes twice a day, whereas with a private pool you will be lucky if it’s cleaned once a week.

Catering: Most private villas are self-catering – but with upmarket villas the owner sometimes can arrange for food to be prepared by a chef – although this is not cheap. If a resort has its own restaurant you can eat there if you wish – sometimes a meal is included in your booking. Or you can eat out at local restaurants or have cooked food delivered to your villa. Or you can buy produce and supplies locally and cook the food yourself inside your own villa. Please note; not all resorts have villas with cooking facilities – so double check this aspect before you book.

Cost: A resort-owned villa should work out at less cost because of the larger economy of scale where more guests or small parties and groups can be catered for. On the other hand some upmarket resorts can be very expensive owing to their location, exclusivity and furnishings. Go for low-cost *** villa resorts if possible.

LONDON: Malaysia is among world’s best-value destinations, according to travel guide firm Lonely Planet.
The British-based company, in its Best In Travel 2011 guide, said Malaysia “is a clever choice for travellers on the lookout for a bargain”.
Thanks to the economic crisis, Iceland and London were also among the top 10 destinations, which included Thailand, South Africa, India, Mexico, Bulgaria, Kenya and Las Vegas,
The annual snapshot book captures “the world’s hottest travel trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead”, Lonely Planet said yesterday.
The economic collapse in Iceland meant the island was no longer punitively expensive, said the guide, putting the beleaguered country at the top of its best-value list.
Thailand, at number two, remained “perennially good value”, said the book.
Meanwhile, London’s days as a costly destination were now over, Lonely Planet said, thanks to the exchange rate which made it “much more affordable for visitors from abroad”.
The top 10 countries overall for travellers were El Salvador, Germany, Greece, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, Portugal, Suriname and the United States.

Tra Co Beach Vietnam

Tra Co Beach is located in the Northeastern extreme of the “S-shaped Vietnam”, in Quang Ninh province. It is by the border with China, and around 8 kilometers from Mong Cai mountainous town and some 170 kilometers far away from Ha Long. With its advantages in terms of location, the beach is the destination of a number of travelers, especially those who come from China.

To the west, the province borders an extended forest and mountainous region. To the east, it is adjacent to the Gulf of Tonkin. It features a meandering coastline, numerous estuaries and tidal flats, and more than 2,000 large and small islands. Of which 1,030 have been named. The local annual temperature is around 22.7oC with two main seasons (Hot and Cold). The best time for swimming is summer season from April to September.

How to get there?
From Hanoi, going there by bus is a bit tired because of a long and uneven way of about 300km, and a long time of 7 hours. However, it is worth that you can enjoy the scenes of the Red river delta and will be surprised at different natural beauties from time to time and from plain to mountainous area.

Getting there by marine seems to be much easier and faster. After visiting Ha Long bay or Cat Ba island, we can take an express boat and reach to the beach after about two hours. By this way, you can also have a chance of enjoying the feelings of floating on the sea.

Beca - trishaw

Beca is the Malay word for rickshaw or trishaw here becasue of the commonly found three wheel variety. Trishaw was a common form of transportation right up to the late 80s and some still preferring them in the 90s. While it is a relic of the past, the trishaw is making back these days as a tourist attraction and it is good for a slow pace tour.

The common trishaw here is basically a bicycle with passenger cart attached. In Malacca and Kelantan, the cart is attached at the side, while in Penang it is in front, giving passenger better view in front.

The trishaw has a convertible cover and it is really fun to ride into. I still remember while I was a kid, we normally go around Georgetown with trishaw. Always look forward to it.

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

Built in 1910, this was the central hub for the nation's rail transportation before the modern KL Sentral Station. The building has great influences of North Indian Islamic design in its architecture such as beautiful arches, domes, spires and minarets which gives the building a majestic and romantic feel.

Due to the demand of office space in 1967, a new 4 storey extension was built at the north wing of the station, including the Heritage Station Hotel, formerly known as Boy's Hotel.

The railway station is no longer the main hub for train services in Kuala Lumpur since 2001 and currently the Komuter rail service is the only tran that still stops here.

Satay - Must try food while in Malaysia

Some say satay has Turkish roots due to its similarities to shish kebab but some say it began with Chinese immigrants selling it on the streets. Whatever its origins, staya is almost synonymous with Malay cuisine.

Satay is usually marinated beef, chicken or mutton in slightly larger than bite size pieces skewered on thin bamboo sticks, then barbequed over a charcoal flame. The hawker flips it every now, basting it with oil and fanning the flame to ensure even cooking. It is accompanied with a slightly spicy-sweet peanut sauce, One can continously-eat the satay, and before realising it, will have eaten a fair ten to twenty sticks.

If you want to stay in a hostel which is quite nice, clean and affordable then Sentosa view is a nice option. This hostel is located in spottiswood park road. It is close to Outram park MRT & Tanjan pagar MRT. Lots of food courts and shopping markets nearby. Also the hostel is near to the city area.

You can find two kind of rooms in this hostel. A room with six beds and without bahtroom so you have to use the common bathroom which is outside (there are two common washroom). Another room with six beds but the washroom is inside the room (attach washroom). A room will cost you between $15 - $28 Singapore dollar. It depends on the season as well. There are so many free facilities availalbe in the hostel which includes:
Free access to internet. There are also two computer available for traveller withou laptop

If you are planning to extend your stay in the hostel then make sure to book in advance through the hostel booking web site else you might find that there is no room available later. It’s quite funny but sometimes they prefer the online booking.

Smoking and drinking in Thailand

If you arrive as a tourist in Bangkok, you may initially be puzzled as to where to find cigarettes or tobacco. The reason is that tobacco wares are not allowed to be displayed in public and no advertising is allowed.

Smaller shops will usually sell cigarettes (which are not expensive, even the imported ones). Most convenient places to buy tobacco are the 7-Eleven convenience stores scattered around Bangkok. The cigarettes are located just behind the counter, but as I mentioned, you will not actually see them displayed and must aks for them.

Not quite sure why anyone would want to smoke cigarettes, but for the more serious smokers you will find tobacco wares (cigars, pipe tobacco) at Siam Paragon and Emporium. The shops that sell tobacco are called Bangkok Wine Cellar (they mostly sell wine and spirits). There is one located on the 5th floor (next to the Gourmet Market) at Emporium Shopping Center, and another one (a bit larger, maybe somewhat more choice) in the corridor left of Gourmet Market at Siam Paragon (located at the basement level floor). The pipe tobacco and cigars are not openly visible, so you have to ask to see the wares.

Most five star hotels will have a small shop where you can buy tobacco wares. I noticed that these shops are allowed to display tobacco for sale.

Smoking is prohibited in restaurants and public places in Bangkok. Smoking is allowed outside buildings. For example, if you are a smoker and visit a Starbucks for your morning coffee, you may want to select one that has an outdoors section.

When you visit bars, well you will see the reason why smoking has been banned in most places, and gets such a bad press. The bars are filled with smoke, and any visit may have you coughing for the next few days. In our opinion, if smokers would have been more self-restraining, things would not have developed as far as they have now, with smokers being treated almost as bad as plain criminals.

Update : As of February 2011, there is a smoking ban in airconditioned bars and night clubs. Up to then, bars and nightlife entertainment venues had been exempted. A grace period has been granted, and full implementation of the new law will probably occur around May 2011.

Drinking and Buying Alcohol
Drinking alcohol is still allowed in Thailand. However, you can not buy alcohol at all times of day. Shops like supermarkets and 7-Elevens are not allowed to sell alcohol between 2.00-5.00 P.M. and after midnight. Sometime in the morning (the time escapes me) sales are permitted again. As far as we know, you can drink alcohol all day though in restaurants and bars.

On some days (religious and national holidays, election days) alcohol sales are banned altogether, and drinks can not be served even in restaurants and bars (which usually close on these days anyway).

Wines are invariably priced high. Even table wines that would be sold at less than 100 baht a bottle in Europe, cost 400 baht and upwards.

Stronger drinks like whisk(e)y, gin, vodka are quite cheap altogether. A bottle of good whisky such as Grant's or Ballantines can be had at around 550 baht a bottle (about 15 US $).

Most supermarkets will sell wines and spirits. Beers and mostly local brand alcohol is available at 7-Elevens (prices are about 20% higher than at supermarkets though). By the way, Thai brandy (sometimes called whisky or rum) is actually quite tasty and very cheap.

Drunk driving is a major problem in Thailand, and thousands of people are killed each year because of it. Most victims (and perpetrators) are 'low-class' motorcycle drivers, and little is done to enforce existing laws, and/or to improve drivers' conduct. Invariably, each year around New Year and with Songkran (the Thai New Year) there will be temporary campaigns to limit the number of road deaths. Thailand Tourism Recovery Plan

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has embarked on an immediate tourism recovery plan and is working closely with the Thai tourism industry to restore confidence in the destination. TAT has been conducting random interviews with individual tourists at various popular tourism sites around Bangkok, such as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Khao San Road, Chatuchak Market, Suan Lum Night Bazaar, Siam Square and CentralWorld at Ratchaprasong intersection.

Foreign tourists were asked how they felt about their stay in Thailand over the past week and early this week. All of the individuals responded positively and indicated that the situation has not in any way affected his/her visit to Thailand.

Despite some uncomfortable experiences that I encountered during wwoofing in Korea, I can't stress enough how wwoofing has taught me about Korean culture and their lifestyle. The farming is unquestionably tiring but self-redeeming at the end of the day.

As I'll be going to Korea again, I can't resist to wwoof. Definitely. :) this time? It's gonna none other than *drum roll* Jeju Island! The people speak unfathomable dialect compared to the standard spoken Seoul dialect. I wonder how much can I comprehend?

If you think about wwoofing in Korea, I stumbled upon this great site at Daum cafe which contains reviews of wwoofer's experiences. Bear in mind that wwoofing is not all glitters and bling bling so it might not be your cup of tea.
