Thank you for being a regular reader, as it has been enjoyable to receive comments from and have a dialogue with you all.

At this time I am taking hiatus from the Tour Outsider blog. I am not sure when I will be coming back and posting on a regular basis.

Frys.com Open

TOUR Championship

This week the US PGA Tour has its final FedEx Playoff event, the BMW Championship. The event is being held at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia, with only 30 players in the field (which makes it a little easier to select 5 players who will play well this week).

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the TOUR Championship.

I am making it easy on myself and will be sticking with the top 5 players in the CLi rankings. They all have CLi figures less than 10, which is a good sign that the CLi has figured out they have a fairly good probability of playing well this week.

Furyk (analysis) was leading going into the final round last week at the BMW Championship before placing 3rd behind Zach Johnson and Nick Watney. He shot 59 in the tournament, so he is playing well currently. He placed 7th in this tournament last year, didn't make the championship in in 2011, and won the event in 2010.

Johnson (analysis) won last week, beating out Fuyrk in the last round, and has finished in the top 8 in 6 of the last 7 tournaments he has played in. So he is also playing well at this time. As for the TOUR Championship, he has faired in the middle pack 4 of the 6 times he has played in the tournament. He has a 9th place finish in 2010 and a 2nd placed finish in 2007.

Woods (analysis) has been playing inconsistently this year compared to his past play. However, he is playing better than most players. He finished 11th last week at the BMW Championship, and was 2nd several weeks ago in the Barclays. East Lake tends to treat him well. He has finished 8th (2012), 2nd (2009), 1st (2007), 2nd (2005), and 2nd (2004) the last 5 times he has played in this event.

Garcia (analysis) finished 15th last year in this week, but had a 2nd place finish in 2008 and a 4th place finish in 2007. He has not necessarily placed great in the tournaments leading up to this week, but he has been hitting it well and playing consistent -- especially for him. His best finish this past month was 4th at the Deustche U.S. Bank Championship.

Day (analysis) finished 6th in this event the last time he played in it (2011) and finished 4th last week at the BMW Championship. So has showed some good play recently and has had prior success at this event.

BMW Championship

After a week off, the US PGA Tour is in Chicago to play the 3rd FedEx Playoff event: the BMW Championship. The event was traditionally played at Cog Hill in Chicago, however, has moved courses the past several years -- last year it was at Crooked Stick in Indiana and this year it is at Conway Farms in Chicago.

Below is the list of the top 15 players in the CLi rankings for the BMW Championship.

As with the last tournament, the Deutsche Bank U.S. Championship, the top 5 players have CLi figures below 10 -- the 6th player even has a CLi of 10, which makes it difficult to pass up on that player (Adam Scott). This is a good sign that the CLi has a good indication of who has the highest probability of playing well. However, I am still going to stick with the top 5 players in the CLi rankings.

Furyk (analysis) hasn't finished worse than 22nd in this event since 2003, with an average rank of 8.0. He won the event in 2005, and finished 2nd and 3rd in 2009 and 2008 respectively. He finished 9th in the event last year. Since the beginning of August, Furyk has played in 4 tournaments, and finished in the top 10 in 3 of them: 6th - Barclays Classic, 2nd - PGA Championship, and 9th - Bridgestone Invitational. He finished 22nd in the other tournament -- the Deutsch U.S. Bank Championship.

Woods (analysis) might not be playing up to par compared to what the media compares him to. However, his results have been rather good. Since August he has won a tournament (Bridgestone Invitational) and finished 2nd in another (Barclays Classic). In the other two tournament he has played in Since August, he didn't fair as well -- placing 65th (Deutsche Bank U.S. Championship) and 40th (PGA Championship). It is the uncharacteristic inconsistency that has thrown the media for a loop. In this event, he tends to play well -- he actually tends to play well in Chicago-area tournaments. Since 2003, he has won this event 3 times, placed 2nd twice, finished no worse than 15th, and has an average rank of 4.1.

Reno-Tahoe Open

This week the US PGA Tour has two events taking place: 1) The Bridgestone Invitational, and 2) The Reno-Tahoe Open. This post is for the Reno-Tahoe Open, which is taking place in between Reno, Nevada and Tahoe, California at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Montreux Golf Club (a course that I scouted and the company did work on). The event is a modified Stableford format.

Bridgestone Invitational

This week the US PGA Tour has two events taking place: 1) The Bridgestone Invitational, and 2) The Reno-Tahoe Open. This post is for the Bridgestone Invitational, which is taking place in Akron, Ohio and is played on the Firestone Country Club.

Stricker (analysis) finished 2nd last year in this event, and has finished no worse than 14th since 2009. Playing a limited schedule this year (has only played 8 tournaments since the beginning of the year), he has not missed a cut and has finished in the top-10 five times with two second place finishes (Cadillac Championship and Hyundai Tournament of Champions).

Johnson (analysis) has finished in the top-16 of this tournament five times since 2004, with an average ranking of 20.9. In his last two tournaments he has finished 6th (British Open) and 2nd (John Deere Classic --- losing in a playoff to Jordan Speith).

Mickelson (analysis) doesn't necessary play well at this tournament, having an average rank of 41.6 since 2003 with a low finish of 4th. However, prior to 2003 he finished 9th (2002), 8th (2001), and 4th (2000). He is playing well leading up to the tournament (2 wins in his last two outings -- the British Open and the Scottish Open), which could lead to a good finish this week at Firestone.

Bradley (analysis) won this event last year and placed 15th in 2011 (he has only played the event twice). With a strong finish at the British Open several weeks ago (placed 15th) and an 18th placed finish at the Travelers Championship in mid-June, he could be riding a wave of confidence this week.

Dufner (analysis) finished 7th in this event last year, and had a 26th and 4th place finishes in the British Open and the U.S. Open this summer. Although these are great finishes, they are definitely solid finishes in tough tournaments. This could be a sign that he will play well this week at Firestone.

British Open

The third major of the year is upon us: The British Open. The game's oldest major, the British Open is being played at Muirfield Golf Links this year. Muirfield is a classic course. The British Open has previously been held at the course 15 times since 1892. Over the past 35 years, the winners of the British Open when it was played at Muirfield have been Tom Watson in 1980, Nick Faldo in 1987 and 1992, and Ernie Els in 2002. At the end of this week, another prime championship shall be crowned. Enjoy the week of competition!!!

No player has a CLi figure less than 10. This is an indication that my CLi calculation can't easily determine which players will play well this week -- i.e. it is difficult to pick which players will play well in the British Open. Thus, my work is cut out for me...and the players this week.

I am going to go with the first two players in the CLi rankings: Mickelson (analysis) and Els (analysis). Mickelson won the Scottish Open last week, need I say more; he has a record of playing well in a major when he wins the week before -- case in point is with his record at the Masters. Maybe that trend will continue this week at the British Open.

Els won the event last year, and he won the BMW International Open several weeks ago. However, on the down side, he missed the cut last week at the Scottish Open and few players have won back-to-back British Opens.

I am going to skip over Bjorn (analysis) and English (analysis). Bjorn has been playing well this year. However, he withdrew after the 1st round of the Scottish Open last week. I am not sure why he withdrew, but if it is for an injury, that would make it tough to pick him this week. English won his first U.S. PGA Tour event last month in Memphis, and has played solidly in several tournaments after that. However, he lacks the experience in a major like the British Open, which is important this week -- the conditions can be mentally grueling at the British Open, especially for a youngster.

My next pick is Stenson (analysis). Although he didn't play in the event last year, he has two 3rd place finishes in the previous four years -- in 2010 and 2008. He is playing well leading up to this week having finished 3rd last week in the Scottish Open and 10th in the BMW International Open in late June.

For my final two picks, I am going to skip over Woods (analysis) to pick Johnson (analysis) and Fowler (analysis).

The only player with a CLi figure below 10 is Mahan (analysis), with a CLi figure of 7.60. Thus, I am going to pick him first. Since 2006, he has finished no worse than 30th (not including the WD before the start of the tournament in 2010). His lowest finish is 2nd (in 2009) and he finished 8th last year. His average rank in the tournament since 2006 is in the tournament is 14.3. He placed 24th last week at the Travelers Championship and 4th two weeks ago at the U.S. Open. After missing 4 consecutive cuts in March, April, and May, he has placed no worse than 26th in the 5 tournaments he has played since the middle of May.

My second pick is Van Pelt (analysis). He finished 2nd in the tournament last year, and 11th the previous two years. He has played some sold golf the last month, having no great finishes, but also no poor finishes (hasn't missed a cut the past 7 tournaments).

For the next three players, I am going to skip over Stroud (analysis), and then pick Scott (analysis). Then I am going to skip over Appleby (analysis), and the pick Day (analysis). For my final pick, I am going to skip over Palmer (analysis) to pick Fowler (analysis).

Ok, here we go. The second major of the year is upon us. The U.S. Open will take place this week at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.

Rain is currently causing havoc on the course early in the week, so it will be interesting to see how the short course will play. Memorial Tournament

I am back in the country, and have reliable Internet connection. Thus, I will post a full posting for this week's tournament. This week the US PGA Tour is in Ohio to play Jack's tournament, the Memorial Tournament.

Woods (analysis) is the clear favorite this week. He has played well in this event in the past and is playing well leading up to this week. Since 2000, he has played in the tournament 10 times and has won the tournament 4 times, including last year. His average rank in the tournament since 2000 is 7, with his worst finish being 22nd (in 2002).

Kuchar (analysis) played well last week at the Colonial Invitational, finishing 2nd behind Weekley. He hasn't missed the cut in the 12 events he has played in this season, with his worst finish being 48th (PLAYERS Championship) and his best finish a win (at the Accenture World Match Play). He has tended to play well in this event as well. He missed the cut the first time he played the event in 2003. However, since then he has finished no worse than 13th in the 5 times he has played the event. His best finish in the event is 2nd (in 2011).

Every (analysis) finished 4th last week at the Colonial Invitational and finished 6th in this event last year (the only time he has played in this event). Hopefully those two data points will align this week to result in a solid finish by Every.

I am going to skip over Perry (analysis), Streelman (analysis), and Schwartzel (analysis). Perry has played well in this tournament in the past. However, the reason why he is high up in the CLi ranking is because of his solid finishes on the Champions Tour. He missed the cut last year. Streelman and Schwartzel have been playing well this year, but they missed the cut in their previous tournament leading up to this event. Thus, I am going to skip over them and pick Van Pelt (analysis) and Huh (analysis) for my final two picks.
