Rarely will I ever lay this much juice in baseball, but I believe the Los Angeles Dodgers are worthy of it tonight. They’ll be motivated for a win following two straight losses to the Brewers to open this series. Plus, they send 2011 NL Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw to the mound.

Kershaw has picked up right where he left off last season, going 4-2 with a 1.97 ERA and 0.903 WHIP in 10 starts this season. He’s been untouchable in his last three starts, going 2-1 with a 0.78 ERA while allowing just 2 earned runs in 23 innings.

Yovani Gallardo is off to a slow start for Milwaukee, going 3-4 with a 4.19 ERA and 1.414 WHIP in 10 starts. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 4.77 ERA and 1.518 WHIP in five road starts as well. Gallardo has never beaten the Dodgers, going 0-3 with a 6.54 ERA and 1.421 WHIP in five career starts against them.

Kershaw is 17-2 against the money line in his career as a home favorite of -150 to -200. The Dodgers are 13-1 as a home favorite of -125 to -175 this season. Two struggling pitchers take the mound in Anaheim on Wednesday night as the Angels host the Yankees. Ervin Santana is 2-6 with a 4.45 ERA in 10 starts; he allowed 4 runs, four hits, and seven walks in five innings in his last start. He lost to the Yankees back in April after giving up 5 runs and six hits. He lost two straight starts at home to the Bronx Bombers last year after giving up 9 runs in those two games combined. Robinson Cano (11-34), Eric Chavez (11-31), Derek Jeter (17-41), Russell Martin (6-20) and A-Rod (12-34) hit the Angels’ starter well. The Yankees are putting up over 5 runs per game in their last eight games while hitting right around .270 this season. The Angels’ bullpen has close to a 50% save percentage so the late innings can be an adventure for them.

Ivan Nova has been very hittable this season. He is 5-2 with a 5.47 ERA in nine starts giving up 71 hits in just 56 innings. Nova managed to allow 3 runs and six hits to light-hitting Oakland in his last outing. He has given up 13 runs and 20 hits in his last three starts overall. Nova beat the Angels back in April, but he allowed 4 runs and eight hits in the process. He is 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three career starts against the Angels. Peter Bourjos (4-5), Chris Ianetta (3-5), Maicer Izturis (3-6), Howard Kendrick (2-6) and Mark Trumbo (4-8) have good numbers against the Yankees’ starter. The Angels are hitting right around .280 at home and they are putting up runs right now. The Blue Jays are showing some great value as a small home favorite against the Orioles on Tuesday. Toronto will send out their ace Ricky Romero, who is 5-1 with a 3.86 ERA on the season. Romero has had no problems shutting down the Orioles of late. He is 6-1 with a 2.08 ERA in the series since 2010 and has pitched at least eight innings in each of his last three starts against the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays offense should be able to score enough runs against Baltimore’s Jake Arrieta. In 10 starts this season, Arrieta is 2-5 with a 4.87 ERA. He has been especially bad of late, going 0-2 with a 6.61 ERA and 1.836 WHIP in his last three starts.

Both teams are rolling of late. The Yankees have won five straight. The Angels have been even better recently. They’ve won six consecutive games. Given the pitching matchup, I feel the Angels have an excellent chance of being the team which extends its streak.

Weaver is 6-1 with a stellar 2.61 ERA and 0.899 WHIP in 10 starts this season. In his last start, he allowed one run on just three hits, through eight innings. At home, he’s been nearly unhittable. In four starts here, Weaver has an incredible 0.83 ERA and 0.49 WHIP, averaging better than eight innings. He’s 4-0 in those games and has 30 K’s vs. only two walks, allowing only a single home run.

On the other hand, Hughes is 4-5 with a poor 4.94 ERA. On the road, his ERA climbs all the way to 5.12. He’s 1-3 in four road starts and is averaging just 4.8 innings in those games. He’s pitched far fewer innings than Weaver overall but has allowed more than twice as many home runs on the season.

Hughes is also 1-2 with a terrible 8.70 ERA and 1.984 WHIP vs. the Angels. He faced them earlier this season and gave up six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, Weaver is 5-2 (team was 7-3) in 10 starts vs. the Yankees. He allowed one run on three hits in eight innings the last time he faced them, recording a dominating 11 K’s. Consider LA. -Ben Burns

The Mariners have the clear advantage on the mound with Hernandez. The dominant right-hander is 4-3 with an ERA of 2.80, including 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA at home. The Angels’ Williams doesn’t inspire the same confidence, especially on the road where he’s 0-2 with an ERA of 5.06.

After getting swept in their last series by the Cleveland Indians to fall to 20-24, the Detroit Tigers will be very hungry for a victory tonight in Game 1 against the Minnesota Twins. They should have no problem getting a win against a team that is tied for the worst record (15-29) in baseball.

Detroit sends underrated rookie left-hander Drew Smyly to the mound tonight as he looks to continue his success in the early going. Smyly has pitched great, going 1-1 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.191 WHIP in eight starts. He’s 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA and 0.957 WHIP in four road outings.

Minnesota starter Anthony Swarzak is simply overmatched in this one. Swarzak is 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.636 WHIP as a starter this season. He’s pitched much better out of the bullpen, but he’s been terrible when asked to start. Swarzak is also 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA and 2.000 WHIP in two career starts against Detroit.

The Tigers are 26-10 against the money line after having lost 3 of their last 4 games over the last 2 seasons. Detroit is 6-1 in their last 7 after scoring 2 runs or less in their previous game. The Phillies out-slugged the Cardinals 10-9 in the first game of the series, and I really like their chance of beating St Louis again on Friday.

Philadelphia will send out Cliff Lee against Kyle Lohse. Lee is 0-2 on the season, but has pitched much better than his record indicates. He has a 2.66 ERA in six starts and an amazing 0.56 ERA in two starts on the road. Lee also has a 2.48 ERA in five career starts against St Louis.

Lohse got off to an incredible start, as he comes into tonight’s game 5-1 with a 2.91 ERA. However, Lohse has really struggled in his last two starts, giving up eight runs on 20 hits in just over 12 innings of work. Look for the Phillies offense to stay hot and give Lee plenty of run support in this one.

Because two little-known starting pitchers are going at it tonight in New York, I believe oddsmakers have set the bar too high tonight. Both Eric Stults and Jeremy Hefner are better than they are getting credit for. Plus, they’ll be up against two of the worst line-ups in baseball.

Scheduled to make his first major league start for the Mets is Jeremy Hefner (0-1, 2.25 ERA), who gave up two runs, four hits and struck out five over five innings of relief after replacing the injured Miguel Batista during Saturday’s 2-0 loss to the Blue Jays. Hefner compiled a 2.72 ERA over seven starts at Triple-A Buffalo before being recalled last week.

The Padres will give the ball to Eric Stults (0-0, 2.70 ERA), who was claimed by San Diego two days after being designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox last week. The Padres didn’t waste much time throwing Stults into action – the left-hander yielded two runs, four hits and three walks over 6 2-3 innings but didn’t factor in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Stults is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in three career starts against the Mets. Hefner should have success against a San Diego team that is batting a major league-worst .191 with men on second or third. The Padres went a combined 2 for 22 (.091) in such situations during a three-game sweep in St. Louis. The Mets are hitting just .240 and scoring 3.2 runs/game at home this year. The Dodgers refuse to slow down as they have now won six straight games to improve to 30-13 on the season and increase their lead to a commanding seven games over the Giants in the National League West with every other teams at least 11.5 games back. They have been dominant at home with a 19-4 record but three straight road wins have put them over .500 on the road and at this price, we are getting more value. Los Angeles has won six straight games as an underdog.

The Diamondbacks had lost 10 of 12 games before putting together a modest 4-2 run but they have dropped the first two games of this series as the pitching has been hammered both games. That has been the case a lot this season as Arizona has a 4.23 ERA and that balloons to 5.19 in its home games which is the second worst in baseball. The Diamondbacks are just 7-14 at home this season and this came after a 4-0 start so things have certainly gone south in Arizona.

The Dodgers send Ted Lilly to the mound and while he has had two very strong years with Los Angeles, his third year has been sensational so far. He is 5-0 with a 1.79 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in seven starts with six of those being quality outings. He has allowed one run or fewer in five of those games and going back to last season, he has allowed three runs or fewer in eight consecutive road starts. Also going back, the Dodgers are 8-0 in his last eight starts against teams with a losing record.

The Diamondbacks counter with Joe Saunders who has already a roller coaster type of year. He opened with five straight quality outings before allowing six runs in consecutive starts against the Cardinals and Giants. He bounced back with a quality game last time out against the Royals but is now back home where his ERA is a horrible 6.04 thanks to those two bad outings.
