The Red Sox are showing some great value as a small road favorite against the Twins. Boston has won the first two games of this series and four straight overall. The Red Sox are swinging the bats extremely well right now, averaging 5.3 runs over their last 7 games. Minnesota on the other hand has lost four straight and six of their last 8 overall.

Both teams send out a starter who has struggled of late, but I don’t think there’s any question that Boston has the better of the two in John Lackey, at least when it comes to previous performance against opponent. Lackey has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his five starts vs the Twins. Minnesota’s Pedro Hernandez has made two career starts against the Red Sox and both have been a complete disaster. He’s allowed 14 runs on 19 hits in just six innings of work. He allowed 6 runs on 7 hits in just 2 innings of work against Boston earlier this month (5/8). Given how these two teams are playing right now, there’s simply too much value to not place a small wager on Boston this afternoon. BET THE RED SOX!

After losing two out of the first three games in this series, the Detroit Tigers want a win in Game 4 to square it up. I’ll back them at an excellent price tonight with Doug Fister on the mound.

The Rays have taken the first two games of this series in a pair of slugfests. I look for things to settle down considerably on Sunday as we have a fine pitching matchup between Matt Moore and Chris Tillman. I’ll grab the insurance run with the Orioles as they aim to avoid the sweep.

It’s not as if the Rays were on fire heading into this series, having dropped back-to-back games at home against the Red Sox. They’ve been an inconsistent offensive club for much of the season, and I don’t expect that to change now. Off a pair of explosive games at the dish, look for them to show some regression on Sunday afternoon.

Rays starter Matt Moore has posted a perfect 8-0 team record in his first eight starts this season – a stark contrast to what we saw from him early in last year’s campaign. He hasn’t exactly been dominating the opposition lately, however, as he’s issued 10 walks and allowed four home runs in his last three starts, spanning 16 innings of work. He was on the hill for a 6-2 win here in Baltimore earlier this season, but had lost his previous two outings at Camden Yards – both coming last season.

Chris Tillman will counter for the Orioles. He’s quietly enjoyed a fine start to the 2013 season, having gone 3-1 with a 3.40 ERA. It’s easy to forget that this was a guy that went 9-3 with a sub-3.00 ERA a year ago. Over Tillman’s last five starts, he’s allowed only seven earned runs in 33 2/3 innings pitched. While he’s come up empty in his last two starts against the Rays, the Orioles are still 2-1 in his last three outings against them here in Baltimore.

The Orioles bullpen has been shaky lately, a big reason why I’m willing to lay the extra juice to get an insurance run on Sunday afternoon. With that being said, it’s not as if the Rays ‘pen has been lights out, posting a collective 4.05 ERA on the road this season. Look for a tight game all the way, with the O’s doing whatever they can to avoid the sweep. Take Baltimore +1.5 runs (1*).

The A’s won Game 1 in a pitcher’s duel between James Shields and Jarrod Parker. Adam Rosales hit an eighth inning home run to seal the deal for Oakland, as they came from behind for the victory.

Oakland will send Tommy Milone to the mound in Game 2, and he’s coming off a loss to Seattle his last time out. Tommy has always been a better pitcher in his home park, and this season is no exception, posting a 2.63 ERA at O.co Coliseum compared to a 4.93 ERA on the road. He’s also been good against the Royals, posting an ERA of 1.20 in his last two starts.
Kansas City will hand the ball to Ervin Santana, who’s been slipping up after a good start to the season. Santana (3-2, 2.79 ERA) allowed four runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in a 4-2 loss to the Mets his last time out. Prior to that he took the decision in a 4-3 loss to Baltimore.

Yoenis Cespedes is 2-for-6 lifetime versus Santana, but both of those hits went out of the ballpark. John Jaso also hasn’t been fooled, he’s 7-for-14 with a home run versus the veteran right-hander.

Oakland appears to have quite a favorable matchup here at home, and the price is very reasonable.

My clients and I have cashed in with the White Sox in each of the last two days, and there’s no reason to jump ship on Friday, as the oddsmakers have once again missed the mark setting them as an underdog with their ace, Chris Sale taking the hill.
The betting marketplace is still having an awfully tough time adjusting to the fact that the Angels are not a good baseball team.

At 15-26 on the season, things obviously haven’t gone the ‘Halos way. While they have too much talent on board not to turn it around at some point, for now they remain an excellent ‘play against’ team, especially in the ‘favorite’ role.

I’ve been high on the White Sox from day one this season, and even after a slow start, still believe they have plenty of upside. We’ve certainly seen signs of life from them lately, as they’ve notched four wins in their last five games, all starting with last Sunday’s masterpiece from Sale against these same Angels.

The towering left-hander has been simply dominant this season, posting a 2.88 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in eight starts, spanning 56 1/3 innings of work. He’s given up only 41 hits while posting a stellar 49:12 stirkeout-to-walk ratio. Home runs have been a bit of an issue as he’s been tagged for six, but only two of those have come over his last five starts. Of course, Sale held the Angels to only one hit in a shutout victory last Sunday night in Chicago, and he also defeated them here in Anaheim last year, allowing only one earned run over 5 1/3 innings pitched.

C.J. Wilson will counter for Los Angeles. He’s been pitching well, essentially since the start of the season, but unlike Sale, he hasn’t been working deep into ball games and that could cost the Angels again tonight. Note that working behind Wilson is an awful bullpen that has posted a collective 5.02 ERA here at home this season, and coughed up another possible victory last night. Since joining the Angels, Wilson is winless in two starts against the White Sox, both times matching up against Sale.

The Chicago offense has finally come to life, with Alex Rios leading the charge. Even Adam Dunn has come around over the last couple of days, while it’s only a matter of time before Paul Konerko shakes out of his slump (he’s collected a hit in back-to-back games and has looked more comfortable at the plate after a couple of days off). The Angels can score, but they’ve had a miserable time keeping the opposition in check, a big reason why they find themselves in third place in the AL West. Take Chicago (1*).

It’s rare that you get the opportunity to back arguably the best pitcher in all of baseball as an underdog. Well, that is what has been given to us tonight as Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers are a dog to the Texas Rangers Thursday.

I’ll gladly take advantage and back Verlander at his best price of the season. The 2011 AL MVP & Cy Young winner has gone 4-3 with a 1.93 ERA and 1.208 WHIP in 2013. Verlander is also 8-3 with a 2.50 ERA in 13 career starts against Texas.

Yu Darvish has been putting up solid numbers in his own right, but he’s no Verlander. Plus, Darvish has posted a 4.50 ERA in his last three starts. He has also given up seven earned runs over 13 2/3 innings in his last two home starts against Detroit for a 4.61 ERA.

The Tigers are 51-22 in Verlander’s last 73 starts overall. Detroit is 37-14 in its last 51 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Tigers are 65-26 in Verlander’s last 91 starts with 4 days of rest. Detroit is 8-3 in Verlander’s last 11 starts vs. Texas. Bet the Tigers Thursday.

The first three games of this series have all been low-scoring. In each of those games we saw a total of 7.5 or lower and all three went UNDER. Despite the recent results, oddsmakers opened the total for Thursday’s game at 8.5. It’s since been bet down to 8 and I think it’s time to jump all over it. The fact that oddsmakers set the total higher, has me thinking they are expecting an offensive outburst.

I would agree. The Brewers will send out Hiram Burgous, who was lit up for 12 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits in just three innings of work in his last start. He’s clearly not going to come in with much confidence. The Pirates will counter with Francisco Liriano. In his first start of the season on Saturday, Liriano allowed just one run on six hits while striking out 9 against the Mets. However, he lasted just 5.3 innings and likely won’t pitch deep in this game. You also have to remember that Liriano has a history of some pretty ugly starts. Both starters have the potential to give up 5+ runs in this game. Even if one starters pitches well, there’s a good chance the other will make up the difference. BET THE OVER!

We expect a low-scoring game between the Indians and Phillies on Wednesday afternoon. The Indians play their fourth game in just over 48 hours as they wrap up a brief 2-game set in Philadelphia against the Phillies. Cole Hamels looks for his second win of the season; five of his eight starts have gone Under the total. Hamels has allowed just 5 runs and 12 hits over his last three starts while striking out 17. Jason Giambi (0-4), Mark Reynolds (2-10) and Drew Stubbs (2-11) have had their problems with the Phillies’ pitcher. Cleveland has scored just 7 total runs in their last four games, all of which have gone Under the total. They are hitting right around .236 in their last eight games.

Corey Kluber has pitched well for the Indians excluding his last start at the tough Detroit Tigers. Before giving up 8 runs to them, he gave up 5 runs and 12 hits in two starts against the Royals and Twins. The Phillies broke out of a scoring slump a bit on Tuesday night by scoring 6 runs. Before that they had scored just 13 runs over a 5-game span. This is a Phillies team hitting just .243 against right handed pitching. The Indians’ bullpen still has not lost a game yet this season and they continue to be a strength. We expect a low-scoring game between the Indians and Phillies on Wednesday afternoon.

We’ll take Minnesota in this game on Tuesday night.

Minnesota continued their smoking hot offensive assault on Monday night as they put up 10 runs. Now they’ll have to attack Jake Peavy of the White Sox. He is 4-1 with a 3.03 ERA in six starts for Chicago. Peavy faced the Twins back on April 20th allowing six hits in seven innings of work. Minnesota’s offense has improved greatly since then as they’ve scored 55 runs in their last eight games. Brian Dozier (5-13), Joe Mauer (9-29) and Chris Parmalee (5-11) hit the righty hard. The Twins are hitting almost .280 in their last eight games and they are 9-8 at home. Chicago’s bullpen gave up a bunch of runs on Monday and they’ll be a little thin for tonight’s game.

Kevin Correia is glad to be home after two rough road starts. He has allowed just 6 runs in 29 innings pitched at home going 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA in four starts there. Chicago has scored just 8 runs in their last three games and 21 runs in their last seven games overall. They are hitting .219 against right-handed starters and they are 7-12 on the road this season. Minnesota’s bullpen has an ERA under 3.00 on the season and they continue to do good work. We’ll take Minnesota in this game on Tuesday night.

The Bulls have now lost two straight in the series and have failed to cover the spread in both games. There’s no doubt the public will be on the Heat in Game 4, which is of importance here. Oddsmakers are well aware of the public and yet the current line on this game is a full point less than what we saw Miami favored in Game 3.

In my opinion, that’s a pretty good indication that they feel like the Bulls will keep this game close. I couldn’t agree more. Chicago is clearly the team with more to play for, as the series is all but over if they lose this game. I’m taking the points as insurance, but I like the Bulls chances of winning this game outright!
