AS:PF which is short for Always Seen x Patrick Francisco, is a never ending series of works by Patrick Francisco, that in most cases will be exclusive to www.alwaysSEEN.com. To start things off, AS:PF will be releasing a brand new shirt design that features Patrick’s signature chimp, and like most of the AS:PF items that we plan on releasing, these shirts will be produced in extremely limited quantities. Starting thisThursday, June 11, 09 we will be taking pre-orders on the new AS:PF shirt. So be on the lookout for that and other releases by AS:PF.
In April of 2008, I’d come to an impasse on my screenplay and was regarding even the words I’d written on my grocery list as being poorly formed. I was still logging keystrokes on the computer daily, but a significant number of them were going to buying toys on eBay. Then fate intervened in the form of an ad my girlfriend spotted on Craigslist. It seemed a local company was seeking a designer toy writer. I got the gig. I wrote and wrote. In September, I was promoted to Editor. I wrote 1,965 posts, and now I can’t stop writing. My shopping list was recently short-listed for a Nobel.

It is with some sadness that I step down as Editor-n-Chief from ToyCyte. This has been the best job I ever had. It was so good that it seldom felt like a job at all. ToyCyte added a new voice to the blogosphere: one that’s useful, but also interesting, honest, critical, devoted, irreverent and fun. With custoMONDAYs, we shined a light on artists doing awesome work, but who are unable to get past the “namist” attitudes of other blogs. I’m incredibly proud of the 20 artists who have appeared in the series so far.

In a classic case of right idea/wrong time, the economy conspired against us, though. With ToyCyte’s parent company falling on tough times, funding for ToyCyte was severely cut. Unfortunately, my landlord won’t take Toy2R as tender.

In a little over a year, I made a lot of friends, bought a ton of toys and had an absurd number of pages indexed by Google. If there is a silver lining to this dread recession, it is that a large number of creative people are coming together to help each other. All of this dialogue has given rise to a number of exciting ideas and collaborations. I just told you about Doodlesplatter, my Jon Burgerman blogography. We’re currently at work on a new project about DIY and “disposable” art. If you’d like to get the first word on when we go live, drop a message with “subscribe” in the header to info [at] artkivers.com. If you’re an artist working in different mediums in scattered locations and you’d like a cataloged and centralized artkive like Doodlesplatter, chat me up!

As Alex Pardee notes, my biggest blogging rival is the sloth, so I’ve got to keep on my toes. While I work on my script and court an ISBN, I’ll still be representing in the blogosphere. I’m always up for new opportunities, so get in touch if you’ve got an idea. Feel free to follow me on twitter or drop me an email at jeremy [at] artkivers.com, and if you’re in the Bay Area, you’ll still see my jafro around town. This has been an utterly excellent ride. Writing for you has been a dream. Big ups to Jason and Rich and Collin (and all the other people who contributed to ToyCyte) for making it all possible. To everybody: Keep making your art, and I’ll keep writing about it.

2008 was the year that changed my mind about designer plush. It began with the innocent-enough acquisition of two items: A Curster Yeti by Erin Currie and Frank by Kristin Tercek (aka Cuddly Rigor Mortis). Following that, my mind, and the floodgates, were open to plush. I kept in touch with Kris and watched as new creatures were born into the Cuddly Rigor Mortis stable. You can see how her interests in Japanese culture, animation and horror movies are reflected in the detailed dolls. And detailed they are: each of the sizeable hand-sewn plushes comes with extra touches like embroidery and a birth certificate. If that conjures up an image of an Xavier Robert's signature, hello to everyone else who was born in the late 70s! But with designs based on Universal Monsters and New Jersey lore, these ain't no Cabbage Patch Kids. You can find the CRM crew on Facebook or you can enter here to win a 13 x 15-inch custom Anubis plush in the contest!

About Cuddly Rigor Mortis

2008 was the year that changed my mind about designer plush. It began with the innocent-enough acquisition of two items: A Curster Yeti by Erin Currie and Frank by Kristin Tercek (aka Cuddly Rigor Mortis). Following that, my mind, and the floodgates, were open to plush. I kept in touch with Kris and watched as new creatures were born into the Cuddly Rigor Mortis stable. You can see how her interests in Japanese culture, animation and horror movies are reflected in the detailed dolls. And detailed they are: each of the sizable hand-sewn plushes comes with extra touches like embroidery and a birth certificate. If that conjures up an image of an Xavier Robert’s signature, hello to everyone else who was born in the late 70s! But with designs based on Universal Monsters and New Jersey lore, these ain’t no Cabbage Patch Kids. You can find the CRM crew on Facebook, or you can enter here to win a 13 x 15-inch custom Anubis plush in…

The Contest

Want to win this custom Anubis plush? Here’s how: Since Anubis was the Egyptian god of death and mummification, what sort of funeral would you like to have? Leave your idea in the comments section below. Kris will pick the best funeral concept and send the morbid toy fan the Anubis.

Please post your comment by June 21st at midnight PST. We will declare the winner on June 22nd, shortly before the next custoMONDAY. The contest is open to anyone, anywhere in the world. If you have already won a custoMONDAY in 2009, please feel free to share your creativity, but you are, regrettably, not eligible for the prize.

The Interview

When and how did Cuddly Rigor Mortis come about?

In 2004, I was faced with a relatively boring, humid NJ summer. I thought that my love of designer toys and plush could provide a distraction. So with no prior sewing skills, I started trying to make a plush toy. After a month of trying different designs, Mummy was born and my husband, Ed Mironiuk, encouraged me to keep going. I let the originals sit in our spare room for a year before Ed kicked me in the butt to get them ‘out there’. The response has been pretty surprising since I really haven’t promoted it and took it purely as a hobby.

Who in the CRM stable have been your favorite characters? Who was the toughest to make?

Every time I finish a Woofman I love him a bit more, but I curse making him. NJ Devil is a similar one: 22 pieces to trace, cut and stitch together is a tough thing to do. For me at least! But for hands-down all time toughest to make it’s absolutely a tie between Woofbot and Odin. Mold-making and stud-setting are tough when you’re not used to it.

How did the opportunity to license CRM happen, and where can ToyCyte readers find them?

We were already dealing with a company who were licensing Ed’s artwork for stickers. We then brought up CRM to them, figuring they might license the illustrations of the characters, but they wanted to make the dolls. www.yujean.com is the place to buy them.

Have you noticed an explosion in plush toys over the last couple years? Got any favorites?

There absolutely was an explosion, but it seemed to be about 4 or 5 years ago right around when I started CRM. Lots of little plush companies sprouted up along with loads of people pushing their wares on Etsy. But it was always a tough sell. I don’t think plush ever got the same response as vinyl did. It’s always been a matter of explaining to people that these are pieces of art to us and not a Beanie Baby. Plush artists don’t have scads of cheap labor to harness, and it usually comes down to one person designing, buying supplies, tracing, cutting patterns, sewing and shipping each and every plush. Yet, it’s difficult to ask the same price that you would get for an original painting that took the same amount of time. I think because of this and the current economic woes we all seem to be having, lots of my favorites have closed up shop and moved on. With that said, my first loves were: Friends With You, Anna Chambers and Ugly Dolls. I also have soft (or vinyl) spots for Murakami, Nagi Noda, Nathan Jurevicius, Tim Biskup, Kaws, Junko Mizuno, Tokidoki, Kathie Olivas and Tado.

Who makes up the CRM collector demographic?

We have always been amazed at the sheer diversity of our collectors. We have never been able to pinpoint just one demographic because it really is across the board. I’ve gotten emails from 6 year old boys and girls, all the way up to men and women in the military. And not just any military personnel but combat medics and special forces snipers. Hardcore men and women who get a smile from my plush work. I’m thankful everyday that the people who risk their lives to keep me safe get a kick out of my work. That and the kids. Ed and I don’t have any kids (just two chihuahuas) and never wanted them, but I get the biggest kick out of fan mail from kids. They make up stories, draw me pictures and come up with new characters. So cool. I wouldn’t have continued sewing for this long if I didn’t have so many amazing fans.

Say something that makes me miss New Jersey.

Guido-watching down the shore, you don’t have to pump your own gas and fried egg and pork roll sandwiches at the diner. Wow. I can’t believe I came up with three…

Please offer a sentence or two of advice to our governing bodies.

Please don’t forget about us. The people out there on our own, making our own work, starting or trying to keep their small businesses afloat. Our lives are tough enough as it is without having to fork over a mortgage-sized payment to get health insurance. Or having to deal with government regulations that completely disregard the fact that some businesses are just one person. The new CPSIA toy laws are making life miserable for small indie kid’s toy makers. Indie, arty, designer small businesses are the ones who never had a problem with lead paint–it was the huge Chinese manufacturers. Ugh…stop looking solely at fixing the huge corporations and start looking at HELPING the small businesses of America. We love this country too! (Anyone interested in seeing what the CPSIA is all about and how they can help small businesses please visit http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org)

What’s next for you and Cuddly Rigor Mortis?

I have always loved to paint. But instead of art school I went to NYU filmschool, animated, started an ink and paint business with Ed [Editor's note: they are responsible for the Saturday TV Funhouse shorts on SNL!] and then sewed plush toys. I love CRM. It’s a perfect reflection of me: Cute but deep down there’s something dark. So I’ve decided to start painting again and take a breather from the 25+ plush designs I usually have up in my shop at all times. I will keep the plush simple so I can start to explore other avenues for CRM like prints, T-shirts and a childrens’ book. Hopefully my fans will come along for the journey because that’s exactly what it is for me. I’m honestly not sure where it will end up but it’s so fun right now I can’t help but be excited.

Awesome! If anyone has a good T-shirt printing company suggestion for Kris, leave her a message in the comments. And the rest of you: start planning your funerals below. Best of luck with that!

You know that slice of trivia about how Usher finds it soothing to sort his M&Ms by color before a show? Yeah? Really? You do? Stay with me, I’m going to loop back to that. Toward the beginning of my time at ToyCyte, I was writing about Jon Burgerman A LOT. A toy here, a T-shirt there, but certainly something every single week. I became very interested in the variety of “canvases” open to today’s artists, and I began to dig around. In an attempt to keep ToyCyte a balanced blog, I held back and ended up with a surplus of bookmarked bits. Eventually, I decided to start a separate dedicated Jon Burgerman blogography.

The Internet is permanent in many ways, yet ephemeral in others. Things sell out, pictures are removed, sites fade away, links get broken…There’s also a lot of art out there that’s not meant to last forever. Maybe it gets lost or worn out or removed or eaten up.

Doodlesplatter was born out of a desire to present a complete “artkive” of Jon’s work. Organizing and categorizing doodles is perhaps as close as I’ll ever get to sharing a wavelength with Usher. Through chaos, I found calm. Some people have asked me, why did you choose to do this with the work of Jon Burgerman? Just go to the website. The answer is in the artkive. With just a few clicks, you’ll see Jon illustrate that any surface can be a canvas. Whether you’re sick on a plane (airplane vomit bag) or stuck in the rain (umbrella collab with SIZE?), Jon’s doodles are there to cheer you. I find this very inspiring and happy-making. So I’m returning the favor: Jon Burgerman has a posse.

Doodlesplatter wouldn’t have been possible without the awesomeness of a few individuals: Jon for doing what he does, and then later for answering all my queries and doodling me some bespectacled artkivists. And stellar Molly and The Neon Hive for unparalleled web design skills and really “getting” the idea. (They made me an Error/404 page you might not actually mind encountering.) Seriously, talk about sharing a wavelength. One day I said to myself: ‘I think I’ll interview Jon Burgerman as if I worked for Tiger Beat,’ the next day I had my questions answered by Jon, and the next day I had a perfect Doodle Beat layout by Molly. If you like reading Doodlesplatter a fraction of how much I’ve enjoyed making it, I’ll surely meet the requirement to deduct charitable donations on my 2009 taxes. Ha ha HA. That’s a joke, IRS.

Go check out the site, and join the posse. We’re collaborating on some more stuff, so stay tuned. Also, fellow Americans: Jon Burgerman is currently in your midst. Live painting at Cute & Dangerous in Laguna Beach this Friday, followed by a summer residency in NYC. I’ll see you there.

Since I began ToyCyte in April 2008, I had the amazing “once-in-a-life” opportunity to try and find a great news team to cover an industry I love. I was able to explore any and all options to make a toy news blog profitable on a larger scale. I quickly found Jeremy, and a few other freelancers, and ToyCyte was born. Jeremy quickly became a powerhouse on our staff, and we were lucky enough to be able to contract him full-time to concentrate on making our news gathering unlike anything else out there. I think we not only achieved that in short order, but greatly exceeded even our own expectations.

Then, the economy took a collective poop. As you may have noticed, we at ToyCyte scaled back our news coverage considerably last month. The economic woes severely affected our parent company, and as a result, ToyCyte’s funding was severely cut, after nearly 4 months of us trying to find ways to make ToyCyte financially sustainable. The economy affected our advertisers, and affected online sales even before we started up our own store. Double whammy.

Even before ToyCyte finally took shape, I knew most of the financial obstacles I would face, but nobody expected what was to come in late 2008. We were not unlike the newspaper industry in someways… how do you find a way to be financially viable for a product you give away? How do you find a way to really elevate designer toy news with a team of writers? Retain editorial quality? Not be a press-release blog? Write hard-hitting stories on copyright protection, blindbox economy… or researching the industry, discovering new talent and helping hundreds of artists get the attention they deserve?

Regardless, I will argue that editorially, we are the best damn toy news site out there.

We correctly erred on the side of being a watchdog rather than a lapdog and I am extremely proud of what Jeremy, Collin, Sunny, Hana, Nic and the rest of our contributors have accomplished. To date, we have published 3,546 articles in just over a year. Jeremy was responsible for 1,960 of those alone. His keen eye and sharp writing wit will be missed not only in ToyCyte, but in the designer toy world. Jeremy will still be around, and he’s currently working on projects involving “the archiving of doodles and other ephemera”.

ToyCyte isn’t shutting down, but since this is more a labor of love now, and until we can find a way to generate enough income to support a person, we’re scaling back our reporting. Jeremy will be concentrating in finding a full-time gig (so if anyone needs a great writer, please hit him up!), and I will be handling the custoMONDAY, and running the editorial and the store on top of a fulltime job and preparing to be a dad, sculpting and sleeping. Don’t be surprised if you see Jeremy and Collin posting every now and then, though. It’s not really goodbye.

That said, if anyone wants to step up — or into the EIC reins — please contact me directly. There is a small bit of financial incentive to running ToyCyte, but more importantly, there is still a lot of talent out there waiting to be written about. Everybody give Jeremy a shoutout in the comments!

MINDstyle just released some proto photos of Michael Lau’s upcoming vinyl marionette for their art toy collectible series:

The task presented by Paramount Licensing was to create an interpretation that would translate well as vinyl. Michael was given the freedom to create his vision with the approval of the estate for the iconic character. What many do not realize is Michael Lau is one of the very few artists that actually does all of his own sculpts, resins, paint masters, packaging designs and oversees his productions from start to finish. The 8 inch tall figure (over 12 inches with the marionette) is now in the later stages of development at the factory. Next week, we will share an inside look at the paint master done by Michael for the project and update with more product release information and The Godfather “Family Tradition” art exhibition curated by Ron English.

Lau came under fire last year about the slippery slope of homage versus infringement. Now I wonder how many of his accusers do their own sculpts, painting, etc?
… literally. They’re bustin’ the old rubber molds to make way for all new awesomeness, so if you want one of WKY’s classic resin pieces, the end times are near.

Fear not, though, as WKY has already produced their newest piece, the Grobold. If I may be so bold, this guy is definitely my favorite of, well, all of ‘em. A triclops with crab claws… it’s like WKY is looking directly into my family tree. Plus, I don’t have an aneurysm trying to spell ‘Grobold’.

The initial run seems to be 6 different pieces, each with a unique colorway (including translucent resins), so let’s hope that these keep on’ coming. Keep up with WKY on Facebook, or ogle their Bigcartel shop until they appear.

I wonder what North Korea’s Kim Jong Il thinks of his semi-prominent place in American popular culture. For legions of late-night viewers, Kim looks a lot like Mad TV’s Bobby Lee. But to Canadian customizer Okedoki, he looks more like a Kidrobot Munny. Writes the artist:

This was a commission for Foosh, for their 10 Year Anniversary. It was an honour doing this project for them, as they’re my favorite store in Edmonton, not to mention the coolest place to buy sneakers, designer clothing and vinyl toys.

Okedoki has a way of translating a diverse (and occasionally controversial: see Hitler Munny) array of pop icons into vinyl toys. She leaves interpretation to the viewer. I can’t comment on why she chose Kim Jong Il (or Hitler) as subjects, but I can say that the stipling technique and Flav-style clock are awesome. Check out her 2008 customs here.
Hooray! He’s back. I’ve missed writing about Jailbreak Toys’ Obama Action Figure so much. Here’s a double-dose of news for the most political man in plastic. 1) Jailbreak is sponsoring an awesome Obama toy photography contest and 2) They are currently producing a Michelle Obama Action Figure! While we wait to see how they model her arms, here’s some info about the contest.

Photographers from all over the country, both amateur and professional, will compete to show the world just what Obama is doing with his leisure time in the PHOTOBAMA freestyle CONTEST presented by Brooklyn-based Jailbreak Toys.

Using creativity, inspiration, and artistry, contestants will pose the Obama Action Figure in places and situations they imagine the Commander-In-Chief to be during his free time.

What does the winner of PHOTOBAMA freestyle receive? Only one of the coolest new gadgets on the market- the Flip MinoHD Camcorder! Contestants will also have a chance to win impossible-to-get limited edition Obama Action Figures. Not only that, but 1st and 2nd place winners will receive one of the very first, yet-to-be-unveiled Michelle Obama Action Figures from Jailbreak Toys, signed by Jailbreak Toys founder, Jason Feinberg.

Prizes will go the photographer whose entry receives the most votes from the public and, using the latest technology, Jailbreak Toys is making winning easier than ever to achieve. The PHOTOBAMA freestyle CONTEST is housed inside a specially crafted widget which can travel to any website. Using a simple embed code (much like a YouTube video), contestants can place the PHOTOBAMA widget into any blog, MySpace, or Friendster page. This way, participants can host the contest on their own sites, making it easy for their friends, family, and fans to vote for them up to once a day. Not only that, but everyone can upload an entry into the PHOTOBAMA widget wherever they find it on the web.

The PHOTOBAMA freestyle CONTEST launches on May 21st with photos submissions accepted through June 29th. Voting begins on June 30th and closes on August 7th. Complete contest rules and description are available on the Jailbreak Toys website at http://www.jailbreaktoys.com/Photobama_Freestyle_Contest_s/58.htm.

I want to insert some bad pun about how it would suck if it were “raining cats and dogs” and these fell on your head, but I can’t quite get it together. Each cat is priced as follows: $35 for silver, $45 for copper, $55 for gold and $65 for black nickle. One crazy cat lady (or lad) will win a golden ticket redeemable for a full size 7-inch tall solid metal gold Fortune Cat. Both sizes are made in 1:1 scale with the original for that perfect fit in with mutant cat collections! Good luck kitty lovers: the cats come out to play on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 12PM PST only at FullyVisual.com.
