Autonews.com report last month, retailers are worried about the production of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma pickup after rumors suggested that the demand for trucks is growing.

If the need arises more trucks, GM insidercarnews.com report says is "adding a third shift" for the Chevy Colorado production team so that it can produce more to meet on demand. Will the 2016 Toyota Tacoma choices face and maintain the advantage?

An earlier report said that autonews.com 155,000 units Tacoma previous model were sold last year and plan for the Japanese automaker to surpass that number this year.

"Toyota will add a third shift production to Baja California, Mexico assembly plant in April - increase the annual capacity of 84,000 units in the Tacoma plant," Autonews.com noted.

Toyota site features the new 3.5-liter V6 engine with direct injection and 6-speed transmission. Robust features as the Crawl Control (MI) and the Multi-terrain Select is also available for the 2016 Toyota Tacoma pick up.

Now that Toyota is facing competition with the Chevrolet Colorado, the company is confident to maintain the advantage in terms of collection sector environment with the redesigned 2106 Toyota Tacoma.

Toyota Tacoma will maintain its leadership or exceed Chevy Colorado sales? Car enthusiasts can only wait and see.

Toyota ready to design more heart-racing Prius.

Long praised for its fuel economy and reliability, the Toyota Prius has been no stranger to less-than-flattering remarks about its styling and sense of excitement. In fact, the model is a regular movie punchline. For evidence, see Mark Wahlberg in The Other Guys or, more recently, Ice Cube in Ride Along.

Apparently, Toyota President Akido Toyoda is getting the message and is pushing for what's been translated as a more "heart-racing" design for both the Prius and the Camry, the Canadian website Driving says. The Camry and Prius accounted for about a third of Toyota's US sales last year.

With the Camry as the best-selling US model for each of the last dozen years, Toyota US head designer Kevin Hunter noted at the Detroit Auto Show last week that the Japanese automaker is looking for a "more emotional" design for the boxy sedan. The Prius redesign may have more constraints, as aerodynamics have to be factored in to ensure top-line fuel economy for the world's best-selling hybrid. Toyota used the Detroit show to show off the FT-1, a concept that many consider a preview of the new Supra. How this "Future Toyota 1" will affect the Prius and Camry redesigns, whenever they appear, remains in question but we like where things are headed.

Toyota refresh’s its Etios and Etios Liva

The 2014 Etios and Etios Liva have been officially launched by Toyota Kirloskar Motor today.

They are being referred to as “refreshed” versions of the cars and sport primarily cosmetic and equipment related changes. The power-plant and core of the Etios and Liva remain largely unchanged.

The new cars carry on using most of the components that were used before, but also offer a few interior and safety options on particular variants.

The 2014 iteration of the diesel-powered Etios Liva has been relaunched with two new grades- the VD and VD (Safety Package), which will be positioned above the GD variant.

The additional features that the VD and VD (SP) grades get include fog lamps in front, chrome-built grille, wipers and washer in the rear, and twelve-spoke alloy wheels. The new variants also have a garnish made of chrome on the hatch-lid in the rear and wing mirrors that sport turn indicators.

The interiors have also undergone considerable changes. The 2014 Toyota Etios, Etios Liva VD and VD (SP) editions get leather-covered steering units, tachometers, two-toned colour theme, and a rear defogger.

Toyota has also thrown in a gear knob made in chrome and wood-finished door handles to top of the interiors package. Both cars have Bluetooth-compatible audio systems.

The Safety Package inclusive VD variant has the added benefits of dual airbags and steering wheel mounted audio system controls.

The mid-range specification Etios Liva G and the diesel mill GD both now boast two-tone interior themes. These were earlier only available on the G and GD Safety Package petrol and diesel power-plant versions.

The new 2014 Toyota Etios comes at a price starting at 5.53 lakh INR going all the way up to 7.23 lakh for the premium petrol model while the diesel Etios sedan has a base price of 6.82 lakh INR reaching up to 8.30 lakh for the high-end version.

The Etios Liva is priced in the range of 4.53 to 6.82 lakhs for petrol driven model and 5.92 to 7.12 lakh INR for the diesel.

Toyota sees increase in Tundra, Tacoma sales in 2013.

Toyota enjoyed a modest bump (1.7 percent) in sales in December compared to the same month in the previous year.

The automaker enjoyed more significant year-over-year gains.

Toyota sold more than 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S. last year. That represents a 7.4 percent increase over 2012 sales.

“The auto industry was a consistent bright spot in the economic recovery throughout 2013,” says Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. “We expect the economy will continue to gain strength in 2014, with car sales rising to pre-recession levels.”

Toyota should be especially pleased with American consumers’ interest in the Tundra and Tacoma pickup trucks, which are manufactured in San Antonio.

Tundra sales were up nearly 11 percent in 2013. Tundra sales increased 12.8 percent year over year, despite dropping 9 percent in December 2013.

If you want most of the benefits of the regular Prius while adding more room and versatility, the 2013 Toyota Prius v is worth considering. The larger dimensions of the v take the Prius from hatchback into wagon category, but the exterior styling remains Prius all the way. And so do the unusual trim names: Two, Three and Five.

Larger Within

The big story for the Prius v is how expansive the interior is. Both front and rear seats offer living-room-size comfort. Essentially, the v is more crossover-SUV-like with a higher seating position than the conventional Prius.

And the sliding/reclining rear seat helps create even more extra space. Cargo room approaches SUV levels, too, especially with the rear seat folded down.

Up-front, the dashboard is a winner, as it is better laid out than the standard Prius and more upscale-looking. Furthermore, all trims give you iPod, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

We highly recommend opting for Toyota's Entune infotainment system. It's one of our favorites because it easily connects with your smartphone and gives you access to a series of useful apps. It uses a large, high-res touchscreen, too.

There's really nothing bad to say about the interior of the Prius v.

Hybrid Drive

The hybrid system in the Prius v consists of a 98 horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with an 80-hp electric motor and a nickel-metal-hydride battery. It's basically the same as the regular Prius -- a net 134 hp going to the front wheels by way of a continuously variable transmission.

But that's where the extra size in the Prius v becomes an issue, as acceleration and fuel economy take a hit. Not that other Prius models are more powerful, but at 3,300 pounds, the Prius v has more weight to haul around.

This means fuel economy drops from around 50 miles per gallon in the Prius to somewhere in the low 40s in the Prius v. More specifically, government fuel economy ratings for the v are 44 mpg city/40 mpg hwy. That's still very good, but if you don't need the extra space, the standard Prius may be a better fit.

Cost and Competition

The base-level Prius v carries an MSRP of $26,650. Other cars to consider include the Ford C-MAX Hybrid and the standard Prius. Or take a look at the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, at nearly the same price, if it's more seating and space you want.

Wrap-Up

The extra space in the 2013 Toyota Prius v is a big benefit for families, home handymen or anyone who likes to stretch out in their ride. It will take you longer to speed up and require a little more gasoline, but the Prius v will deliver an economical trip with enough technology to keep everyone entertained and engaged.

First Drive: 2014 Toyota Highlander

In 2013 the Toyota’s RAV4 was no longer available with a V6 engine and many people wondered why. For 2014 Toyota’s Highlander will be bigger. Wider, longer and available with only a V6 – the four-cylinder has been dropped.

It’s all part of Toyota’s plan to better occupy the emerging SUV niches. RAV4, Venza and Highlander are the Japanese marque’s answer to the unibody (car-based) SUV market – a market that grew by 40 percent last year.

It’s a clever strategy, especially when one considers the amount of clutter and overlap already found in the segment. Interestingly, the body-on-frame market fell just three percent, so many of those entering this segment for the first time are stepping up from traditional cars – all the more reason to consolidate a tiered product line in this class.

And so, bye-bye four-cylinder Highlander. The hybrid remains, of course.

The Highlander is a three-row, eight-passenger SUV, just about the only way to get more cabin room is to buy a Sienna.

Toyota have also applied their new “more emotional” design philosophy to the Highlander, with more sculpted flanks, a handful of funky and functional aerodynamic advices and a larger trapezoidal grill. The effect is… well, there is an effect. Toyota calls it “strong and sleek” – I can see that.

Toyota is offering four different wheels to demarcate the LE, LE + convenience pack, XLE and Limited trims. The top two receive 19-inch wheels but I prefer the look of the 18-inch five-spoke 3D design offered on the LE + convenience trim; they’re extremely attractive wheels.

There is no change to the wheelbase, but the Highlander is 75 mm longer and 15 mm wider. It is also 30 mm lower thanks to a drop in ride height. Those body changes, plus a revised, double-wishbone rear suspension that eliminates the rear strut towers result in a 34 percent increase in cargo volume beyond the third row. There is now 390 L there.

The tailgate is available with a power-lift, and there is also a lift-up window hatch for quick and easy cargo loading – because the less time spent holding your son’s hockey bag the better.

Toyota says its “Drive Curious” strategy is behind the interior design of this car, and there are some very, very clever tricks inside. My favourite is the electronics shelf which is perfectly shaped for phones, mini-tablets, sunglasses and wallets, but also comes with a slot for cables to run down to the USB plug and power supply. It is one of those “why is this not on every car?!” features.

The centre console is designed to hold a tote bag or lap top bag and has two roller doors which open to reveal a gaping maw. Because of the roller-door setup the console still operates as an arm rest when it is open. Women with large handbags will love this feature, as will businessmen with laptop cases, and doctors doing house calls. I kid, I kid. Doctors don’t do house calls anymore.

The other neat trick is Driver Easy Speak. Have you ever wanted to speak with your kids but found they were too far back to hear you properly? No problem, press the Easy Speak button and tell little Jimmy to stop hitting his sister – the microphone in the car picks up the driver’s voice and plays it through the speakers. But wait – what if you’re talking to the wife about their Christmas presents and don’t want them to hear? Luckily Easy Speak can be turned off. It is one-way though, so you might not be able to hear them speak back to you – handy that.

There is a 6.1-inch touchscreen on the base model LE and LE + convenience package. With all other models getting an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation plus a 4.2-inch TFT screen in the instrument cluster. The screens are flanked by large pseudo-buttons which respond as slowly as most digital buttons, but look fantastic.

The XLE and Limited trims have both been bolstered with the addition of standard features. XLE now gets AVN Premium navigation system with the larger screen, rear door sunshades and Toyota Smart Key System with Push Button Start.

Limited now gets a heated steering wheel, heated second row captain’s chairs, a panoramic moon roof, interior LED ambient lighting, 19-inch chrome-clad alloy wheels, and a clearance sonar system with Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

All models now get a back-up camera standard while automatic climate control is available on the XLE trim and up. The removable middle seat is gone from this model, with Toyota citing a lack of interest in the feature as the reason.

Eleventh generation Toyota Corolla is vastly improved in multiple ways and is quite attractive too

The 2014 Toyota Corolla takes a giant leap to compete head-on with its potent rivals.

Without a shade of doubt, the biggest and most significant new Toyota model this year for many global markets including India is the 2014 Toyota Corolla. For the Japanese brand, this global model has always been a strong seller, but with fierce competition in the segment, the outgoing Corolla was outclassed by more stylish, more fuel efficient and better performing rivals in the D-segment. It’s no secret that in most markets every significant Corolla competitor has been redesigned over the past few years. And it’s also a fact that Toyota hasn’t failed to recognise. So, what would be Toyota’s strategy? Would it succumb to competition, seek a way out or fight back? Knowing Toyota and how it operates, one would have thought that the carmaker would evolve a successor and hope that the market accepts this. Surprisingly, for all of us, the incoming 2014 Toyota Corolla represents a revolution more than a mere succession. As a result, the all new eleventh generation Toyota Corolla is designed new from the ground up and it’s much bolder than what some conservative Corolla loyalists might have expected it to be.

Motor Quest: Toyota launched the first Corolla in 1966 and the vehicle became the world’s best-selling car in 1974. Toyota has sold more than 40 million units of the Corolla whose initial generations were rear-wheel drive.

Toyota offers the Corolla in various global markets besides Japan where the domestic models are slightly smaller to comply with tax bands. And in markets like the US, the styling of the Corolla is more influenced by the Furia concept. The ASEAN model styling is more influenced by the newer global models sold in the Middle East like the Camry, Yaris or Avalon. And this is what excites us and it should also ignite passion in the segment as well as with Corolla loyalists. With a length of 4620 mm, width of 1775 mm and height of 1460 mm, the incoming model is slightly longer, lower and wider than the outgoing model. In terms of looks, it sports pleasant sedan proportions where its 2700 mm slightly longer wheelbase contributes in its more athletic proportions with a wider and lower stance.

Side profile reveals curvy lines, away from the mundane design of old models

The Corolla’s front and rear end have drastically changed in profile and detailing which also communicates continuity and maturity in the brand’s new styling theme which is already introduced on the larger Camry and Avalon sedan, and also in the smaller recently introduced Yaris. The detailing includes a very strong front-end design which is supported by pronounced crease-lines on sheet metal. The design appears youthful and actually lifts the veil of anonymity of the older models and moves it right in front of the trendy lot. In addition, depending on trim levels, LED daytime lights are also available now.

Interiors get a sea of changes and the new dashboard design is very appealing

The interiors of the all new Toyota Corolla proudly complement what’s been done outside. It’s a sea of change in design, materials and touch points and perceived space. The increased overall length of the car allows a considerable increase in cabin space and genuinely helps increase rear passenger legroom. The rear seat hip point is moved rearward a full three inches, producing upto 25 mm more rear legroom. As never before, the rear occupant space availability is top notch for three adults. Increased overall vehicle length has also allowed an improved seating position for front occupants in particular. The driver also gets improved ergonomics as the steering column angle has been reduced from 24-degrees to 22-degrees.

Cabin boasts of more space than before with seats offering exceptional support, quality as always is very good

Front seat adjustment range has also increased by over half an inch and while small as these changes sound, one must appreciate the efforts in the tight battle, where every increment in useable occupant space is hard-won and always welcome. One of the Corolla’s strongest suits is its seats. The front seats are absolutely superb, with firm, well-fitted side bolsters and proper lumbar support. And in terms of cargo space in the boot, there’s good news, it has grown thanks to the increase in overall length of the car.

1.8-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines will continue to power the new Corolla in India

Our test vehicle for this report was the 2.0-litre set-up and this trim included keyless stop/start ignition. We feel after driving the car in and around Muscat, that while the its performance has struck us as being an agreeable small sedan to drive, but Toyota could have bettered the plot with an additional two cogs or opt for CVT transmission. During hard acceleration, while we were not expecting the timid Corolla to qualify as a sports sedan, it would be fair to say that end of the day the newest Corolla drives much like the previous one, which isn’t a bad thing when you consider that Toyota has virtually hallmarked its bulletproof engineering and reliability in this model series.

Performance is similar as before but new car is more slippery thanks to reduced Cd

The best thing about the new 2.0-litre engine is that it never feels as if it’s straining to keep up with traffic or unable to deal with the unexpected. But as mentioned before, for the type of engine provided, we feel there’s scope for extra cogs and due to the older set up, in place of inspiring performance, the car offers unpretentiousness that expresses itself as familiar Corolla character. In India, we will continue to get the same 1.8-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines with increased output, albeit marginal. In general, the car feels solid, thanks to its structural rigidity and construction and efforts made to reduce wind resistance is commendable. The car’s drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd places it near the top of the current D-segment class.

Ride quality of the Corolla has improved and the balance in dynamics is commendable

The front suspension uses McPherson struts with a new, more rigid control-arm design and the rear has a torsion beam arrangement. The spring rates on the Toyota Corolla are said to be relaxed for comfort ride and bushing tuning to offer stiffer handling. The rear torsion beam’s attachment points are now fastened to the body at a slanted, diagonal angle for its bushings, a departure from the traditional straight attachment orientation, the new layout contributes to improved grip and stability. On the road, the car’s MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension provides a comfortable ride and we noted that shock absorber spring compliance is much better with full load of five passengers.

Electric power steering makes city driving easy but feel is numb and over-assisted

From the efficiency perspective, the new model comes equipped with an electric power steering system designed to offer improved directness and weight over the previous hydraulic set-up. The electric steering weight is nice, precise but can appear numb to those drivers familiar with sporty set-ups because it is over-assisted. Steering lock-to-lock is in 3.19 turns and this makes the car easy to manoeuvre in tight spots. Braking duties are attended by 275 mm ventilated discs at the front and 229 mm rear drums. Pedal modulation is on the softer side and braking effort linear. Safety remains key priority in the new Corolla, with top class active and passive systems on board. Toyota’s Star active safety technology system, including vehicle stability control, anti-lock braking, smart stop and brake assist, is also included standard.

Toyota’s Corolla is a perennial favourite among car buyers worldwide and in India where it was introduced in 2003, due to its solid engineering and reliability credentials. With intense competition coming from Chevrolet, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Skoda in particular, Toyota is expected to rely heavily on its longstanding reputation for building cars that are affordable, of good quality, and above all, extremely reliable.
