Robert Oxley, campaign manager at the TaxPayers’ Alliance, called for more details of the claims to be published.

He said: “Compensation pay-outs caused by needless mistakes ends up wasting taxpayers’ money and diverts valuable resources away from the front line.

“Some compensation is inevitable, as the nature of frontline policing is that some private property might be damaged, but police chiefs must ensure that is kept to a reasonable minimum.

“Unless further details are published about the number and reasons behind pay-outs it is impossible for taxpayers to judge whether or not some cash has been squandered on large individual pay outs.”

John O’Connell is research director for the Taxpayers’ Alliance.

“It’s the same with any job, we get good value for money out of some MPs and constituents may feel they don’t get good value for money from others.

“Residents want to see their MP making a real difference in their local area, not just getting lost in the Westminster bubble.

“In terms of keeping tabs on them, if MPs don’t do a good job we can vote them out at the next election and that’s about the best measure you can get.

“There are issues with certain areas only voting for a particular party so even if an MP isn’t performing well they may not get the chop.

“What we need are local primary elections to allow the people to decide who runs for Parliament rather than it being the parties who choose.

“That way there is a real incentive there for the MP to perform for the area because it will be the people who decide if they get to stand again.

“It’s a small change and the Government said it was thinking about it before going back on the idea but it could have a huge effect on how active and engaged MPs are in their local area.

“It would also help get past the issue of some MPs in safe seats not pulling their weight and spending too much time engaged in tea room chatter at Westminster.”
