The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is warning that prolonged delays linked to the rollout of Europe’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) could put up to 41 million visitor arrivals and $45.4 billion in visitor spending at risk from four of Europe’s most important source markets.

In a survey of over 2,500 travellers from Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, the WTTC found that those travellers would be much less likely to travel to the Schengen area or would choose not to visit at all if they faced regular border waits of three to four hours at entry.

The WTTC’s findings highlight a critical challenge for European destinations as they introduce EES. While travellers broadly support stronger, more modern border controls, their willingness to visit Europe declines sharply when faced with the prospect of lengthy and unpredictable queues; underscoring how ineffective queue management at border crossing points can have a direct negative impact on the overall traveller experience.

Among respondents, 39% of UK travellers said they would be much less likely to travel with a three hour or greater delay scenario, followed by 33% of travellers from both the United States and Canada, and 27% from Australia.

Commenting on the findings, Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of WTTC, said: “The introduction of EES is an important step forward in modernizing Europe’s borders and strengthening security. Our research clearly shows that travellers support digital and biometric border systems and understand the long-term benefits they can deliver.”

Guevara continued: “As with any major transformation, there will inevitably be teething problems. The challenge now is not whether EES should proceed, but how governments, border authorities and the Travel & Tourism sector work together to ensure implementation is as smooth as possible. “

However, Guevara added: “The good news is that solutions already exist. By making greater use of digital pre-registration tools, improving traveller communications and ensuring operational readiness at border crossing points, Europe can reduce friction and deliver the seamless experience travellers expect.”

And while the scenario analysis highlights the potential consequences of disruption, the research also found strong underlying support for EES. Sixty-five per cent of respondents support the system after learning about it, and only 6% are very negative towards the use of biometric border controls.

Travellers identified stronger border security (57%), quicker processing on future trips (52%) and greater confidence in border controls (43%) as the system’s most important benefits.

On the other hand, awareness remains low. More than half of travellers (55%) have heard little or nothing about EES, while 49% do not know what will be required of them when entering or exiting the Schengen Area.

As a result, the WTTC is calling for three priority actions:

Member States should accelerate adoption of the Travel to Europe app for digital pre-registration.

A coordinated communication campaign is needed across key source markets particularly the UK, US, Australia and Canada. Clear step by step guidance should be provided to airlines, airports, travel agents, tour operators and destination partners so that travellers understand exactly what is required before they travel.

Member States must ensure operational readiness across all border crossing points. This includes fully functioning equipment, sufficient staffing levels and measures to streamline processing wherever possible, including for travellers who have already provided biometric data through visa procedures.

Air Canada’s first Airbus A321XLR took off this week with 182 passengers onboard for a scheduled flight from Montreal to Toronto, marking a whole new chapter is how and where the airline customers can fly.

Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada, observed that: “Air Canada is building one of the most capable fleets in the industry. The entry into service of the first Airbus A321XLR marks a transformative moment for Air Canada and the beginning of an exciting new era for our customers, industry partners, and colleagues.”

Galardo continued: “Today, we celebrate an aircraft that will unlock new destinations, improve service on existing markets, and enhance the onboard experience. For our premium customers, the A321XLR will offer the only lie-flat seats on a single-aisle aircraft for a Canadian carrier as it crosses the Atlantic and connects destinations across North America.”

Air Canada’s new Glowing Hearted cabin standard is making its debut on the A321XLR, offering calm, comfort and connectivity to customers. It features personal device power at every seat, fast, free Wi-Fi for Aeroplan Members sponsored by Bell, next-generation in-flight entertainment screens that are larger and offer Bluetooth connectivity, and thoughtfully curated cabin finishes inspired by the Canadian landscape and aligned to the airline’s brand and commitment to enduring quality.

Along with 14 lie-flat seats in Air Canada Signature Class, the A321XLR has 168 Economy class seats, with every seat featuring seatback in-flight entertainment with 4K OLED IFE screens (13-inch in Economy, 19-inch in Signature Class) with Bluetooth audio.

The aircraft will operate several domestic flights prior to its first trans-Atlantic flight between Montréal and Toulouse on June 15.

Air Canada plans to integrate the A321XLR into its schedule progressively to support growth across its network. The aircraft’s performance and range characteristics are well suited to adjust for seasonal demand patterns and evolving market opportunities.

The arrival of the A321XLR is an important milestone and the latest step in Air Canada’s multi-year fleet modernization program, which is focused on customer experience, operational resilience and fuel efficiency improvements versus older-generation aircraft.

It reflects the airline’s commitment to prudent growth, continuous product investment, and disciplined execution of Air Canada’s business plan. In addition to 30 A321XLRs (15 will be leased, 15 are being acquired directly from Airbus S.A.S) that are expected to enter the fleet over the coming years, Air Canada has announced orders for 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners as well as eight A350-1000s.

It also continues to take deliveries of the Canadian-built Airbus A220, with 21 aircraft remaining on its firm order of 65. Five Boeing 737 MAX aircraft have already been delivered in 2026.

Trafalgar is launching Trafalgar Small Group Tours — a new collection of 22 itineraries with a maximum of 18 guests.

In announcing the new collection, Trafalgar said that the launch responds to growing demand from travellers beyond the classic touring audience who are culturally curious and seek accommodations that tell a story, immersive transportation, more access to Travel Directors and Local Specialists and experiences that go beyond traditional sightseeing.

With access to experiences large groups simply can’t do, these tours give advisors a new conversation to have with clients who are new to touring. The group size allows for an even more personal group dynamic while maintaining the ease, support and confidence of a guided vacation.

Melissa DaSilva, Deputy CEO and Chief Sales Officer, TTC Tour Brands, explained that: “Small group travel is one of the biggest opportunities we’re seeing in guided touring right now and this collection is our answer to that. These trips are designed for a different type of traveller than a classic tour. Someone who seeks experiences that bring travellers even closer to the people, places and stories that make a destination real.”

DaSilva added that: “For advisors, that means a new way to serve clients who are looking for something more personal without losing the Trafalgar signature experiences and support they know and trust.”

The collection has been intentionally designed or enhanced around what smaller groups make possible. The product was developed using in-depth research, including substantial customer analysis and trade engagement, to bring these new trips to life.

Itineraries may incorporate smaller vehicles, private transport, trains and local transportation options that better suit the experience, along with access to local venues, communities and accommodations not always available to larger groups. The tours are especially well suited to active, culturally curious travellers, typically 40 and older, who want meaningful local interactions beyond traditional sightseeing and are more interested in responsible travel experiences.

For advisors, the new collection gives advisors a Small Group Tour product that their clients are already looking for from a brand they already know and love. It gives clients more local connection and flexibility while still benefiting from Trafalgar’s Travel Directors, planned itineraries, included experiences and trusted operational support.

For more than four decades, Bloody Mary’s has been part of the rhythm of Bora Bora. Since opening in 1979, the iconic restaurant has welcomed generations of travellers, locals, artists, sailors, and well-known faces drawn by its relaxed spirit and unmistakable atmosphere.

Sandy floors, shared tables, fresh fish on display, and nights that often lasted longer than expected made Bloody Mary’s more than a restaurant. It became part of Bora Bora’s story.

This September, a new chapter begins with the opening of Bloody Mary’s Hotel, an experience rooted in the spirit that made the original a destination in itself while extending it into a new way of staying in Bora Bora.

Set along the lagoon with iconic views of Mount Otemanu, 53-key Bloody Mary’s Hotel introduces an experience where island life unfolds naturally.

Guests will discover accommodations designed around openness and ease, comfort and simplicity, dining experiences that celebrate local flavours and global influences, and spaces that invite connection, movement, and simple moments lived well.

The legendary Bloody Mary’s Restaurant remains at the heart of the experience, joined by new concepts including overwater restaurant Povai Bay, a lagoon-side dining destination where French cuisine meets island ingredients, and Tiki Tide Bar, a lively gathering place for cocktails and conversation as the day softens into evening.

Just a short ride away, La Bella Matira, set along Bora Bora’s most celebrated shoreline, Matira Beach, brings another perspective to the Bloody Mary’s experience. Inspired by the warmth and generosity of Mediterranean dining, the restaurant blends vibrant flavours, sun-filled plates, and a lively spirit in one of the island’s most iconic settings.

Rather than reimagining Bloody Mary’s, the project – under local ownership – builds upon what has always defined it: authenticity, warmth, and a sense of belonging.

General Manager Julien Bressolles explained: “Bloody Mary’s has always been about people. The stories shared around a table, unexpected conversations, and moments that become memories. Bloody Mary’s Hotel simply creates more room for those moments to happen.”

More than a hotel opening, Bloody Mary’s Hotel represents the continuation of a Bora Bora legacy, shaped by decades of connection to the island and its community.

Opening in September 2026, the property is located on Povai Bay, Bora Bora, French Polynesia and will feature 53 rooms, bungalows and suites; 3 restaurants & bars and room service; a Fitness bungalow, swimming pool and beach corner; Complimentary scheduled shared shuttle to Matira Beach and Vaitape; Marina; and Concierge services.

According to a new study by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), business travel within and to the United States continues to be a major engine powering the nation’s economy and growth, generating $623.8 billion in total gross domestic product (GDP) impact as related travel spending reached $538.5 billion.

The GBTA report – based on comprehensive analysis of 2024 data — reveals the far-reaching impact of business travel across industries, employment, public finances and regional economies across all 50 states, including accounting for 2.1% of the entire U.S. economy (GDP) and $148.6 billion in U.S. tax revenue. It supports 6.7 million jobs nationwide and is also linked to 1 in every 24 U.S. jobs.

As well, the new findings show that nearly 488 million business trips were taken across the U.S. in 2024, underscoring the scale and reach of business travel activity to, within and across U.S. states.

The GBTA’s CEO, Suzanne Neufang said that: “Business travel delivers value that reaches well beyond companies and travellers — it’s also about direct economic impact in communities across the country.”

And Neufang pointed out that: “From supporting millions of jobs to funding public services, the data shows how deeply business travel is connected to U.S. economic resilience, growth and competitiveness.”

Business travel spending in U.S. destinations reached a record $538.5 billion in 2024 (up from $501.1 billion, or 7.5%, since 2023) and includes:

$270.0 billion from domestic travel

$50.7 billion from international inbound travel

$217.8 billion from meetings and events delivery and management

The data also underscores the industry’s strong multiplier effect across the U.S. economy, revealing that each dollar invested in business travel in 2024 generated $1.16 in GDP. Business travel is inherently location-focused, so increased travel spending translates directly into domestic growth, jobs and tax revenue at those locations.

In 2024, business travel supported 6.7 million jobs across the U.S., spanning direct employment in travel-related sectors, supply chain roles, and jobs supported through re-spending of wages. Altogether, 1 in every 24 U.S. jobs was linked to business travel activity, reinforcing its importance as a pillar of the American workforce, including:

3.7 million direct jobs (e.g., travel-related industries)

1.2 million indirect jobs (e.g., related supply chains)

1.8 million induced jobs (e.g., the re-spending of wages)

Additionally, in 2024 the sector also generated $366.4 billion in wages, supporting U.S. workers across hospitality, transportation, professional services sectors and beyond.

Business travel remains a substantial source of government funding, contributing $148.6 billion in total tax revenues in 2024, including:

$76.9 billion in federal taxes

$71.7 billion in state and local taxes

On average, each business trip generated approximately $290 in tax revenue, highlighting the industry’s direct value to public services and government revenue. Notably, the study finds that without business travel, U.S. households would need to contribute an additional $1,102 annually to maintain current tax revenues.

Meetings, conventions and events drove $217.8 billion in U.S. business travel spending, representing 40.4% of total spending in 2024 and highlighting the expanding role of in-person group meetings in the sector’s total economic impact.

These expenditures—ranging from venue rental and food and beverage to production and event management — reflect the critical role of in-person collaboration in driving commerce and innovation. Operational spending for meetings includes:

$59.9 billion in food and beverage

$47.9 billion in production and speakers

$34.3 billion in meeting administration

The study underscores the essential connection between business travel and the broader economy, reflecting the importance of continued investment in traveling for work. Just a 1% increase in total business travel spending in the U.S. translates to an additional:

66,800 jobs

$6.2 billion in GDP

$3.7 billion in wages

$1.4 billion in tax revenue

Business travel generates economic activity that reaches every corner of the U.S., connecting cities, regions and industries nationwide.

Spending is concentrated in major economic hubs—the top five states are California ($40.6 billion), New York ($30.2 billion), Florida ($26.2 billion), Texas ($23.7 billion) and Illinois ($13.3 billion).

The top 10 states account for over half (57%) of total U.S. business travel spending.

Domestic travel including for meetings and events remains the foundation of this activity, representing roughly $270 billion of the $538.5 billion in total U.S. business travel spending.

The economic impact of business travel extends well beyond direct visitor spending. It supports a wide range of industries — including transportation, lodging, food service, retail and local suppliers — while also driving indirect supply chain activity and induced household spending.

The report also highlights the diversity of business travel and traveller activity:

59% of business trips were taken for transient business purposes such as sales meetings, client services engagements or government and military travel.

41% were for group travel purposes, such as conventions, trainings and seminars.

The most common trip length was three to four nights (30.5%), while trips lasting more than four nights accounted for 18.6% of all overnight business travel.

Blended travel, where business and leisure purposes are combined in the same trip, made up nearly a third of all U.S. business travel (31.3%), with travellers staying for 4.2 days on average during blended trips.

Said Neufang: “While 2024 marked a strong year for business travel and its economic impact, 2025 and 2026 have presented new and complex challenges shaped by rising geopolitical tensions, cost pressures and cross-border uncertainties.”

And the GBTA’s CEO concluded: “Delivering economic and industry insights is central to GBTA’s mission, and we will continue to monitor these shifts and report on how evolving dynamics are affecting the business travel industry.”

The Canadian government has announced it’s taking targeted action to support stability in Canada’s airline sector during this period of elevated fuel prices.

Minister of Finance and National Revenue, François-Philippe Champagne, announced the launch of the Liquidity for Airline Sector Resilience facility, a new loan program through the Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation (CEEFC). The facility will offer eligible Canadian airlines experiencing significant financial pressures resulting from elevated jet fuel costs up to $150 million in repayable liquidity support, on an as-needed basis.

The Liquidity for Airline Sector Resilience facility will provide timely, targeted and temporary support to help airlines manage exceptional fuel-cost pressures, maintain operations and jobs, and preserve a competitive airline sector that Canadians rely on for affordable travel options.

Minister Champagne said that: “Global events continue to create uncertainty in energy markets, increasing costs for industries around the world, including aviation. Canadians should continue to have access to reliable and affordable air travel, whether they are visiting loved ones, travelling for work, or exploring our country.”

He said that: “By building on existing relief measures with targeted and temporary support for Canada’s airline sector, we are helping maintain connectivity, protect Canadian jobs, and reduce pressures on travellers during this period of elevated fuel costs.”

Elevated jet fuel prices have significantly increased operating costs across the global aviation sector, placing additional pressure on airlines as they navigate ongoing market volatility.

The Liquidity for Airline Sector Resilience facility is designed to respond directly to the financial costs of this challenge by linking support to both the increase in the price of jet fuel and the fuel consumption levels of Canadian airlines.

Airlines that receive support through this new loan program would have to commit to Buy Canadian, restrict dividends and executive compensation, and maintain their Canadian operations — including protecting jobs.

As well, to help address these pressures and support reliable and affordable air travel, the government has also temporarily removed the federal fuel excise tax from April 20 to Sept. 7, 2026, reducing costs by 4 cents per litre on aviation fuels, alongside broader relief of 10 cents per litre on gasoline and 4 cents on diesel.

Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, said that: “The Government of Canada is focused on strengthening a resilient and competitive air sector that supports economic growth and keeps air travel affordable for Canadians. As airlines face rising jet fuel costs, today’s relief measure will help stabilize the industry and support a competitive aviation sector for the future.”
