While digging thru the wonderful world of Google Analytics I took a closer look at the live traffic metrics they offer for some time now and find it very interesting, that an US centered site is attracting a lot of oversea traffic from NON-english visitors. For me it looks like the European data centers of Google are in a strong flux at the moment, because this distribution of traffic was more English-heavy yesterday.

Just a short “Happy New Year” everybody! The whole tradebit team was on minimal power over the holidays and I just got back to do some clean-up work on the site. We issued a new certificate for secure communications with the server today and closed some tickets.

As soon as the dust settled from the platform relaunch at the beginning of September, the Tradebit team began working towards the next improvement milestone – the creation of catalog verticals.

Those of you who have spent some time browsing around the Tradebit catalog will know by now how full it is, and this sometimes makes it difficult to locate specific products quickly. We believe the new interface improves navigation significantly, but much more needs to be done to logically divide download topics and prioritize the relevant titles to the top of the pile. To this end, the concept of download “verticals” was devised – virtual worlds for the most popular and important topics, containing hand-picked products from the catalog, and supported by related content and other resources.

We began with four sub-categories from the Software Downloads topic –Video, Audio, Graphics and Security - and added these important sub-categories to the left-hand navigation, populated with tried and tested items from the Tradebit catalog. Each sub-category contains a number of related download sections. Currently, these “prototype verticals” (as we are calling them internally) are merely functional, in that they are highly specific and contain the best download collections of each type.

Over the next few weeks, however, you will start to witness big changes to these four sub-categories as we transform the verticals within into complete worlds – containing not just the best products the Tradebit catalog has to offer, but everything else need to get started on a particular topic. We plan to cram each vertical with informative video and textual content, related links, reviews, help and how-to articles and much, much more besides.

The first vertical being prepared for launch is Video Editing. The structure has already been built and we are currently finishing off the first round of content with which to populate it (more will follow post-launch, and we intend to regularly refresh both catalog and content for all the verticals on a regular basis to keep them relevant and avoid stagnation).

For buyers, the verticals make it much easier to find the very best products on offer for any given specific topic, without resorting to the search facility, and the additional content will provide support and guidance on selecting and using the available products. Alternate traffic sources to increase sales

Tradebit got hit by the “Panda update” – not too bad, but sales dropped around 10% on February 23rd, recovered until the beginning of May, got another hit early this month and is now back on 95% of pre-23rd February levels.

Now while our Google based “natural search traffic” is still down, we discovered alternative traffic sources for our merchants on tradebit. An important part is played by the affiliates. Merchants, who do offer high affiliate rates, see constant traffic numbers from their partners.

We also see now a significant amount of shares and likes on Facebook and the traffic from Bing is also higher than ever before. To sum it up: do not rely on us solely to bring you sales to your products. We do our best. We buy AdSense, we buy with Microsoft AdCenter and we do Facebook Ads. Yet, the best merchants on here have diversified their efforts years ago. I blogged about YouTube several times. In order to become a successful download seller, you have to add some efforts from your side to the equation. We have a bunch of examples with the new widget page online.

The key to download sales success is a combination of efforts.

The Ideal Download Product

For those merchants, who wonder how to setup a good selling product I want to summarize the key aspects of a download product that can sell. While our point of view is very Tradebit-centric, I believe the factors I list below are quite common and work on other platforms, too.

Basic data:

The “product” itself: The file you want to sell should be a self-explaining package. What that is differs with the type of file. Stock photos are simpler than reseller software packages. A photo shall have a huge resolution and be in a common format, people on Macs or PCs can open. Mention the format in your description. For software packages: it should include the license, be virus tested, etc.
Preview data and description: The amount of preview data also depends on the kind of product. A photo should have a preview picture that shows the content of the original clearly. That preview picture can be watermarked. In fact: pictures for software packages, ebooks, album covers also should be watermarked, in case people could steal it and use it directly in their forums, etc. For bigger previews I recommend your domain name as a watermark. XNview can do that. The description should explain the product to the average user. “Nice song” is not a good description, nor is “Make money with this resell package” – people need solid infos!
Pricing: The price is the value of the product. Keep in mind that there are many sites out there, selling similar stuff, so be moderate. BUT:the cheapest products on tradebit are not the best selling ones. People who try to make some sales by offering lower prices are doing it wrong. E.g.: our affiliates on Tradebit look for good commissions (of 20% and up) – low pricing will get your nowhere. Moderate pricing will give you more exposure and traffic makes the sale – not the price! A manual for a rare car, for example, makes more sales at 19.95 than for 4.95 – why? Because people EXPECT a valuable piece of information and do not believe they can get it for 4.95.

Additional information:

Search engines: The traffic from search engines like Google and Bing is a solid source of revenue. So using keywords in your title and the description does not hurt. The automated ranking mechanism of the search engines are getting better every year: so do not just stuff words, but use fluent language that fits the content. Do NOT use duplicate descriptions, that come with the file (especially for MRR or PLR products). If you resell products and use the same description the product will decay in the search engines within weeks. Use the “tagging” feature, if there is one. Tradebit is offering 4 different tags per product.
Marketing on the long run: Each buyer is leaving an email address we mail the download info to. This information is yours to work on. Be polite and ask for sign-ups to mailing lists. Create a user base that estimates the stuff you gather and sell. That is true for photographers and PLR sellers alike. We have musicians here that instantly have 100 sales when they release a new song and let their user base know. We have tutorials online with 10 or more episodes that sell like hotcakes, once the user bought the first episode and like it. Quality triggers additional sales.
Contact information: Build trust by showing, who you are. You do not have to put your phone number or address online, but tell people roughly where you are located and that you stand behind the download you offer. Trust is the key in an online world full of fraud! Potential buyers see in the news that systems are compromised, hacked and abused every day. Show yourself and buyers will work with you!

There is much more to know, but these are the basic things to think about as a digital download seller.
