An overview of the proposed 2011 edition of the NEC, where a number of new provisions address renewable-energy technology including photovoltaic cells and wind turbines.

There’s a lot of interest at the moment around the expansion of renewable energy sources, and it’s easy to see why. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), renewable-generated electricity, including sources such as wind and solar, will account for almost 16 percent of total U.S. electricity generation in 2030, up from about 9 percent in 2007. That growth, the EIA says, will be driven mainly by the extension of federal tax credits and the new loan guarantee program in the February 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Meanwhile, EIA projects renewable energy’s share of total worldwide electricity generation will increase slightly between now and 2030, and will be the second largest source of energy for electricity production after coal.

To keep pace, a number of important proposed revisions, as well as new information, related to solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, fuel cell systems, and wind electrical systems have been incorporated into the 2011 edition of NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code®. In some cases, as with PV and fuel cells, the changes build on important provisions that have been part of the NEC for years. In other cases, the provisions are new; the 2011 edition of the NEC will be the first to address wind electrical power systems. In all cases, the changes to the new NEC reflect the evolving safety requirements of consumers, technicians, and emergency responders. Read More...

Overwhelmingly, readers were interested in how to select electrical estimating software. This was a daunting challenge because it’s difficult to suggest software not knowing company needs. Features that are user-friendly and appropriate for one might be poor for another. I had almost decided to skip the topic altogether when I came across Software Advice.

Software Advice provides free consulting on different electrical estimating software. Their experts listen to what you need and recommend products they feel match those needs. They also provide helpful blurbs on some of the more popular software. I haven’t used Software Advice but I do recommend using their site as a starting point for navigating the tricky world of electrical estimating software. In most cases, you can even request a demo of the products they review.

Also, if you’re looking for ways to increase your productivity and profitability, I suggest picking up a copy of Agile Construction for the Electrical Contractor. This book is filled with proven techniques to improve your bottom-line, with tips on everything from estimating and project planning to scheduling and project management.

{The following is taken from www.softwareadvice.com}

Electrical estimating software is designed specifically for the requirements of an electrical contractor's business. For example, leading systems offer pre-built electrical assemblies, up-to-date materials pricing (e.g. copper) and dynamic labor rates based on the degree of difficulty associated with project tasks. In addition to traditional electrical estimating, some vendors have built specific capabilities for low-voltage estimating, teledata cabling or solar panel installation.

When selecting an electrical estimating system, contractors will need to consider the other functions and features they want to integrate. For example, many electrical contractors will want bid management, project management or time and materials billing in the same system. Others will choose to integrate their estimating system to an accounting and job costing system with strong service management to enable seamless processes across the company.

Electrical hazards cause more than 300 electrocutions and 4,000 injuries in the workplace each year, disrupting lives and impacting the productivity of companies. While electrical hazards are not the leading cause of on-the-job injuries, accidents and fatalities, they are disproportionately fatal and costly.

Over the past 10 years, more than 46,000 workers have been injured from on-the-job electrical hazards. These injuries are not isolated to any one industry or field of work and most could be easily avoided. Awareness of electrical hazards is critical to avoiding and preventing accidents.

Since May is National Electrical Safety Month, it is an ideal time for employers and employees to promote the importance of electrical safety by increasing awareness of these vital safety issues. Whether you are an employer, safety director, electrician or maintenance professional – safety is the most important issue for anyone who works on or around energized equipment.

As part of the effort to increase awareness, ESFI has created the Never Assume Safety Series to address the most critical workplace electrical safety issues. Click here to read more.
