Feng Shui Online Courses

Feng Shui Online Courses are one of the hot topics for the last 15 years, really since the start of the Internet craze. At that time, I helped Master Larry Sang and the American Feng Shui Institute get their website started. It was 1996 and the web browser was fairly new. Netscape was one of the first browsers and the web was fairly clunky. The first website consisted of five pages and it was basically a bill-board to the world. But, it got the word out about Feng Shui in the US. At the time, only in-person classes were offered. We had not created Feng Shui Online Courses at the Institute yet.

That was soon to change. In 2000, we received an offer from a third party website to create some basic Feng Shui online courses to be offered on their website. We created the Beginning and Intermediate Feng Shui Online Courses. At the time, they were the first of their kind on the Internet. We then built the structure to host Feng Shui Online Courses on the American Feng Shui Institute’s website and completed the material for the Advanced Course.

In 2001, we launched the first complete series of Feng Shui Online Courses on the Internet. Soon other classes would be added, including the Chinese Stems and Branches Classes, and several Advanced Feng Shui Case studies. These Advanced Case Studies teach higher levels of Feng Shui knowledge and are directly from the case files of Master Sang.

What soon followed were classes on all aspects of Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology. Zi Wei Dou Shu and the Four Pillars classes are popular Chinese Astrology classes offered at the Institute. About the same time, we realized that the Internet has its own pricing due to the fact that there are people from all over the world and from all sorts of different economies wanting to study. What was acceptable in the US was not affordable in developing countries. People wanted inexpensive Feng Shui Online Courses, but with high quality material. The Feng Shui Online Courses had a price reduction that allowed students from all over the world to have immediate accessibility to the Chinese study of Feng Shui.

With this reduced price and with the additional Feng Shui Online Courses that were being developed, the Institute saw more and more students attend online. In fact, many students local to the Los Angeles area, where the Institute is located were now taking classes online. This is a testament to how the flexibility of Feng Shui Online Courses allow people to study at their own pace and at their own schedule.

Feng Shui Online Courses – Things to look for

The American Feng Shui Institute prides itself on presenting only authentic Traditional Chinese Feng Shui classes. If you want to understand more about Feng Shui, there is an article here on “What is Feng Shui?” There are so many misunderstandings about what Feng Shui really is. Let me run through a few of the things that make up authentic Feng Shui Online Courses, as well as what is and isn’t authentic Feng Shui.

Feng Shui was held closely by the Emperor of China for many hundreds of years. It was a source of power and a way of bringing prosperity to the land. As such, many people heard whispered theories of Feng Shui, but without the key, you often did not know the whole truth. For example, many people heard that the bagua was important as was mirrors. Well, hundreds of years ago a mirror was made of polished metal. According to the Five Element theory of Feng Shui (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), metal reduced earth qi sha. This means that there is a calculated energy or qi in a place and it relates to earth. Using metal, such as a metal mirror reduces that earth sha (negative influence). The bagua, is the eight palaces that are used in calculating the qi. Think of a tic, tac toe grid. There are 8 sections and a center. The bagua is important, but not as a decorative object, but rather as the calculation grid for the 8 directions. Eventually people combined these two theories and came up with a bagua mirror. This little wooden object is used to ward off evil qi. The problem is, that this is based on mistaken understanding of both the mirror and the bagua.

As you can see, Feng Shui has a lot of concepts that seem mysterious, but once you unravel the mystery, it all makes sense. For example, another misconception is that Feng Shui is about furniture placement. Well that is half right. What is true is that the furniture should be placed in favorable areas of qi. You want the home occupants to spend time in the good areas of qi and avoid the bad. It is not so much about the furniture moving to a certain area, it is to facilitate the occupants spending time in a good area absorbing the prosperity and well-being energies that are present. So the furniture supports this goal.

There are many Feng Shui Online Courses on the web that present interior design concepts passed off as Feng Shui. Additionally, there are courses that literally have been created by a person here in the USA and is not authentic Feng Shui. Without naming names, there is a fairly famous school that teaches a unique form of Feng Shui. It happened that they were teaching in the same building as we were during a remote class in New York. During their break, the Instructor from that school observed what we were teaching and was amazed at the content. He had no idea about the depth of the Yin and Yang, or the 8 trigrams. In fact, his class did not even teach these fundamentals. Point being, that not all Feng Shui Online Courses have the same depth of material.

When looking at classes that purport to teach Chinese Feng Shui, be careful of any school that recommends using any objects or chants, or practices other than using the five elements or environmental design. Authentic Feng Shui uses only the five natural elements, or changes in the interior or exterior environments to remedy the qi. Anything else is likely superstition or misunderstanding.

Feng Shui Online Courses – Summary

I hope that this has cleared up some of the misconceptions about the Principles of Feng Shui and given you some insight into Feng Shui Online Courses that would serve you best. Feng Shui Shapes are a key part of the Feng Shui study of the environment; specifically the living spaces we call home or work. When we are at home, we need a restful environment. Many times though, homes are designed and built in a shape that is not conducive to rest. Rather, it stirs you up or it is unsettling. A well-designed house should allow the owner to enjoy a comfortable experience within the house.

Have you ever seen an unusual house with an odd design? How did the house make you feel? Were you confused or have a dizzy sensation? Did you get lost inside the home? Often in an effort to make a statement or to add a personal uniqueness, architects play with the feng shui shapes within a house. Depending upon the design, these unique floor plans can have a significant effect on the people who occupy the home. In Feng Shui shapes can have a profound effect on the Feng Shui within a home or building, thus helping or impairing the occupants and their well being.

One such case was a house where people entered at a right 45-degree turn. Without fail, everyone who entered that house tripped over his or her own feet. Another house was designed in a half circle. The house had circular walls and had almost triangular rooms. The owner of this home suffered from health and relationship problems.

Feng Shui Shapes in Restaurants

The reason many Chinese restaurants use circular tables rather than square is that circles create unstable qi that is constantly circulating. Circles and Squares are key Feng Shui shapes. Square tables create restful qi. People tend to linger longer at a square table. The same goes for a circular house. The qi is not still. It does not create a restful home. People do not tend to want to stay long in a circular home.

Feng Shui Shapes in homes

Triangles are also one of the Feng Shui shapes. Triangular shaped homes and lots are not preferred either. There is an imbalance in this shape. One side is open and the other very closed. Inside the house, odd angles are created in the bedrooms. In Feng Shui, odd angles are not preferred, especially those that point at you. They direct the qi at you. Often this is called “poison arrows.” Also called “sha qi,” this is simply a flow of qi that is too strong. Just like sleeping directly under a ventilator, and awaking with a cramp, sha qi can affect your well being. Triangular rooms, homes, or lots can create a lot of these sha qi.

Alternatively, a square or rectangular house is ideal. These are stable and solid. People naturally feel at home. The qi can settle in a square room. The floor plan for a square or rectangular house is usually logical and easy to navigate. Whereas the floor plan of a triangular house is often confusing with 45-degree turns and oddly placed doors.

While the home shape is important, the lot that the building sits on is very significant. Triangular lots can restrict either the well being of the people or the financial success of the home. This is another area where a square or rectangular shape is very important. If the lot has a triangular shape, use bushes or a tree line to square off the lot.

Looking more at Feng Shui Shapes

When looking for a home or even selecting an office, try to find the home that is square, or rectangle and allows you to walk through it without getting confused. If you have a home with angles, try to block those angles using nice plants that cover the angle and block the sha qi. If you have a circular house, you can also use the beautiful houseplants to slow down the qi and to create lines within that feel more natural.

The next time you find yourself in an unusually shaped building, stop and notice the feeling you get from the building’s design. Are you confused? Do you know where to go? Do you have any sensations such as dizziness? Notice your environment and its effects on you. This is Feng Shui! Buildings designed with Feng Shui in mind, while perhaps architecturally plain, can promote one’s success and well being.

People always ask “what are the key Feng Shui Tips that we should know to ensure that we improve our health, relationships and prosperity?” Well, there are several things that you can do to improve the Feng Shui of your office or home immediately. Here is a list we have put together that you can use to take immediate action.

Essential Feng Shui Tips

Feng Shui Tips: Remove any “sha” in the internal environment

This is the most basic, but yet one of the most important tips. Feng Shui is about creating supportive and enjoyable environments. The term “sha” means any negative influence to any of the five senses or your feelings. If you feel unease about something in your home, then you need to remove it. Further if it creates a negative reaction to any of the five senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, or smell, then you need to remove these things from your environment.

For example, we once did a Feng Shui reading on a house. The smells were so bad due to cat urine that if they did nothing else in the house, but open the windows and air the place out (and probably change the carpet), they would have improved the Feng Shui one hundred percent.

Take a look at all the areas of your house and examine them with a critical eye to the five senses. Is there anything that is creating a negative experience in each of the rooms? If so, rectify this problem.

Feng Shui Tips: Examine the outside environment for any “sha”

Another of our key Feng Shui Tips is for you to take an objective walk around your house outside and note any “sha” or items that need to be changed in the yard or nearby. For example, often people will collect old things such as tires, broken appliances, or what not outside on one side of the house. Get rid of these things. They do not need to be kept! Look for other things that take away from the feel of the house, such as a dead tree, or bushes that are beyond saving. Do not keep any dead plants around. This is a very important tip. The environment should have plants that are green and shiny. If they are dying or dead, water them or fertilize them and bring them back if possible. If they are beyond hope, get rid of them. The goal here is to create a warm and welcoming environment outside.

There are other Feng Shui Tips that you can look for, such as odd angles directed at your house from another yard. For example, an apartment building that sits askew to your house may create a right angle directed at your property. If this is the case, plant a large bush or tree to block the angle sha from being visible from your home. Take a look at the concrete. Are there any cracks? Fill these in. This may sound simple, but it has an effect on the Feng Shui.

Feng Shui Tips: Take a look at your bedroom situation

Your Feng Shui Bedroom features are also important. Key things to consider in your bedroom is that you have your bed square against a wall. Do not put the bed at an angle to the corner. This is very important. You do not want to have odd angles in your bedroom.

A common topic when listing Feng Shui tips is that from your bed you do not want to have a mirror or reflective surface directly opposite the bed. This is simply to prevent being startled in the middle of the night when you may see movement in the room, but it is actually only you being reflected in the mirror surface.

Keep the bedroom as a place for rest. Do not bring a desk or other work situation into the bedroom. Use the bedroom as a place to retire and relax.

How Feng Shui Colors are used

One of the most common questions is how are colors used in Feng Shui. There are a lot of discussions online and in various circles on how to use colors. In fact there is a lot of misunderstanding about Feng Shui colors. Let’s take a look at how the various colors are used and their place in Feng Shui.

First to understand Feng Shui colors, we first need to understand the eight trigrams. The trigrams are representations of qi (energy) and are also associated with directions and even parts of the body. The qi belonging to each of these trigrams also has an elemental nature. In traditional Chinese Feng Shui, there are five elements. They are (in order of the productive cycle), wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each of the trigrams are associated with one of the five elements. They are as follows:

Trigrams and their associated Feng Shui Colors

Zhen – Wood – Green
Xun – Wood – Green
Li – Fire – Red or purple
Kun – Earth – Tan or light brown
Dui – Metal – White or silver
Qian – Metal – White or silver
Kan – Water – Blue or black
Gen – Earth – Tan or light brown

How to use these Feng Shui Colors

When looking at a home or office, a Feng Shui Master will determine the qi present in each room. Then based on the qi, a determination can be made on how best to balance the qi energy so that there will be either a remediation of the bad energy or an enhancement of the good qi. Based on the qi, an elemental remedy is suggested. Ideally, the actual element is used, for example where metal is needed a silver plate or perhaps a bronze statue would be good. Sometimes though, the actual element cannot be used for one reason or another. At this time a Feng Shui Master may suggest using the Feng Shui Color associated with the trigram that would remedy the space.

So how does the average person use these colors? There are some basic rules you can follow to utilize the proper Feng Shui color or colors in your home or workplace. The first rule is to never use Red or Black as a wall color if you are painting the whole wall and do not have a clear understanding of the qi that is present in the room. These colors relate to Fire and Water and are very strong. If you use these and you do not understand the impact to the qi, you can potentially end up with such dire circumstances as sickness, blood disease, kidney problems, or even an actual fire.

Let’s be clear. These Feng Shui colors make fine Home Décor accents, but do not over-do the colors by painting an entire wall these colors. In fact, a good rule of thumb is to use colors as an accent feature and stick to neutral or soft colors for the walls. Any of the trigram colors can be used in a proportional amount. But do not go to the extreme on any of the colors. Whites, light colors and earth-tones are fine to use for wall coloring. Use colored pillows, picture frames, drapes, rugs, etc. as your color features. This works especially well as it makes it easy to change colors should you need a change for the particular year. Each year, there is a change of energy and a Feng Shui Master would take that into account.

For example, when decorating a bedroom, use white, or light silver or tan wall colorings. Then introduce color using a colorful bedspread or a throw rug. Keep in mind another key rule, never create on overbalance of any one color. Like medicine too much of any one Feng Shui color is not healthy either.

If at all possible, utilize a traditional Feng Shui practitioner to give you advice on the specific colors you need if you are doing a renovation or a major remodel. Then you can be sure that the Feng Shui Colors chosen are ideally suited for the qi of your home.

An Introduction to What is Feng Shui?

What is Feng Shui? Well the term Feng Shui literally means wind and water. It is rapidly becoming a standard practice for creating the ideal environment in which to live and work.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese study of the natural and “built” environment and has been practiced for thousands of years. This environment can be at the office, in your home, in a building, or on real property. A Feng Shui analysis examines the surrounding environment, the building, how the people interact with the building and looks at time-related factors. Based upon these considerations, recommendations can be made on how to improve your relationship with the environment around you. Results include prosperity, health benefits, and well being. Properly applied, Feng Shui recommendations can result in improvements in the life of the individuals who occupy the property.

In answering what is Feng Shui, how did Feng Shui originate?

Feng Shui can be stated as a form of “Geo-mancy” or “Earth Wisdom.” Many cultures in the world have a form of Geomancy in their history. The Chinese form of Geomancy, or Feng Shui, has evolved to be both an Science and an Art. The science comes from the calculations and methodology used in analyzing a property. The Art of Feng Shui is the wisdom acquired from performing a multitude of analysis and knowing the exact degree to which the remedies (which are the results of the scientific analysis) are prescribed.

Throughout ancient China, classical Feng Shui was a closely guarded discipline used as a tool to ensure the good health, wealth, and power of the Imperial Dynasties. The keepers of this secret body of knowledge – Feng Shui Masters*, were highly respected meteorologists, astronomers, and other scientists and who were charged with sustaining the good fortune and prosperity of the royal court. It has been guardedly passed down the generations through very specific lineages.

*These masters were very selective of their protégées. Extreme care was exercised in the selection of candidates who would become their successors.

What is Feng Shui’s basic principles?

The balance of Yin and Yang

When trying to understand the question, what is Feng Shui, it is important to know that Feng Shui is based on the principle of Yin and Yang. Balance, harmony, consistent change, and the interdependency of all things are but a few of the deep meanings within this simple representation. Yang representing heat and light is rising and Yin representing cold and darkness descends. These are just two of the many examples of logic and insight to be discovered within this image.

Shown above, the image represents the true orientation of the Yang and Yin. Yang, representing heat rises on the left (or East) and reaches its peak at the top (South). Yin representing coolness descends on the right (West) and reaches its maximum at the bottom (North).
Another analogy is that the sun rises in the East, reaches its hottest at noon and sets in the west, soon reaching its darkest. Yet within Yin there is a seed of Yang waiting to arise and within Yang there is Yin waiting to descend. This analogy can be applied to time, seasons, directions, and many other cycles of change. Yin and Yang are key to understanding what is Feng Shui.

What is Feng Shui and the Five Elements

In learning about what is Feng Shui, Another simple, yet powerful representation based upon the Tai Chi (Yin and Yang representation shown above) is the 5 elements diagram. It is a view of how the elemental energies interact. Shown above in its balanced state, it is in harmony. Yet each element can strengthen or weaken other elements in a variety of beneficial and detrimental ways. When calculating the energy “blueprint” of a property these interactions provide the key to correcting issues within a property.

The Eight Trigrams

The Eight Trigrams are the basis for Feng Shui analysis and calculations. A Trigram is a representation of one of the eight directions. In the “Ba Gua” diagram below there is also a center which has no directional association, but is associated with earth. Based also on Yin and Yang concepts, the I-Ching, the Five Elements, and the Lo-shu map, it conveys a map for all other calculations used to determine the energy blueprint within a property.

The East/West Theory

(8 House Theory)
Both people and houses belong to one of the above Trigrams. Each of the Trigrams fall into two distinct categories as either east group or west group. Matching a West group house type to a West group person is ideal, as is matching an East group house to an East group person.

Effects of the Solar System (Xuan Kong)

This advanced technique uses the Eight Trigrams shown above with particular calculations to derive the specific nature of the building and create its energy blueprint. The Environment

The environmental aspects are what most people immediately think of when they consider Feng Shui. Things such as not having sharp corners pointed at them and not living under high tension power lines are a couple of common examples that everyone either knows or can understand. Other environmental aspects such as living next to a freeway or a construction site are considered unfavorable. The elimination of “Sha” or evil influences and strengthening those environmental aspects that are good is what an environmental analysis recommends. These are but a few examples of what needs to be examined during an analysis.
How are these principles applied?

Feng Shui is based upon a set of theories and complex calculations derived from the Yi Jing. This includes an in-depth understanding and application of the basic principles. Using these principles and taking into account the physical relationship between the natural environment and the magnetic fields of the Earth provides a “blueprint” of the influences around us. Using this blueprint we can see clearly the energies or “Chi” that effect us in our properties.

How is a Feng Shui analysis done?

The Feng Shui practitioner first observes the environment, using a Lo Pan (compass) to determine the orientation of the property. Calculations are then completed according to the basic principles. Then a determination of the energy characteristics within the property and its resulting effects on the occupants is made based on the results of these calculations. Remedies are then prescribed where necessary in order to balance the energy to produce a positive effect!

Misunderstandings of Chinese Geomancy

Feng Shui is becoming more prevalent in the West. People want to know what is feng shui? This can be attributed to more and more people becoming aware of how their environment affects them. Most books and information widely available only look at the first two aspects: Building and Environment. This is only a partial examination.

Time and People are two very important components that should not be omitted. A particular building may have a good environment and other positive attributes, but for a specific individual, it might require further examination and corrections to meet their individual goals for that time in their life and the life of the building.

How does one find a qualified practioner?

The classical Feng Shui consultation involves no guesswork. Every building has unique energy characteristics that need to be individually addressed.We say that True Feng Shui recommendations utilize only the five elements and not such things as mirrors, flutes, incense, or prayers.

Just as a qualified physician will not make a prescription without first meeting the patient, a proper Feng Shui analysis requires a visit to the property. Feng Shui looks at not only the environment, but also the orientation of the property within that environment.

Feng Shui is not related to any religion or belief system. A qualified practitioner is one who has studied with a Master for many years and has acquired a scientific discipline, thus enabling them to apply complex calculations and an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles of Feng Shui. Only then are they able to make very specific recommendations that can effect positive changes in one’s lifestyle, relationships and financial returns.

When considering the feng shui bedroom, keep in mind that the bedroom is a key area that we focus on when looking at the Feng Shui of the house. The bedroom is important as it is the place where you rest and recuperate. As such we need the feng shui of the bedroom to be calm, peaceful, restfull, and supportive to one’s health.

Feng Shui Bedroom for Health and Well-Being

The health aspect is key. When analyzing a house, the priority for the feng shui bedroom should be the health factor. In xuan kong feng shui terms that means that the people or mountain star should be supportive for the health of the person. If it is not, then the correct elemental remedy should be applied. For example, if the mountain star of 2 is present in the bedroom, then we need metal to reduce the ill effects of that star.

If you do not know about the flying stars (xuan kong), then you should focus on the environmental aspects of feng shui for the bedroom. Here is one point from the discussion that was very interesting. Master Larry Sang of the American Feng Shui Institute suggested that you should not have circular and rectangular furniture mixed in a bedroom as it can create discord. In fact, circular shapes promote activity and square and rectangular shapes promote stability and rest. So it is best not to have circular beds and to use more square or rectangular shapes in your areas that you are trying to achieve a peaceful and restful environment in your feng shui bedroom.

The feng shui bedroom should be a place for rest and recovery. It should be designed with peace in mind. Do not have a lot of clutter and haphazardly collected furniture, books, household electronics, etc. Make it a sanctuary away from the rest of the crazy world. Use soft designs and avoid using sharp colors or patterns. Of course the great debate is whether a television should occupy the room. If it is a sha (negative influence) to getting rest, then it shouldn’t be there. Additionally, the screen should not be directly across from you as it acts as a reflective object that can create another form of sha. If you wake up and see your own movement in the screen, you might think it is someone else and get startled. As such, you should not have the TV directly across from you.

Feng Shui Bedroom Tips

• Keep the bedroom clean and fresh (open the windows if need be)
• Avoid placing the bed to a corner. Always use a flat wall behind the headboard
• Do not place your bed under an exposed beam if at all possible. You should have a comfortable sleeping position
• Avoid having a mirror at the foot of the bed facing the bed

Keeping in mind that the feng shui bedroom should be calming and peaceful, thus you should not have a lot of work and do not keep an office in the bedroom. Avoid a lot of clutter. Keep the room peaceful and neat. Work towards supporting your own rest. Remember that the bedroom is your place for rest and recovery. Treat your bedroom with respect and thus you are respecting yourself.
