A safety alert has been announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Petzl America for the MYO and MYO Belt Headlamps. It seems the headlamp may spark or even catch fire if it is used with rechargeable batteries. Below the official press release:

Name of Product: “MYO” and “MYO Belt” Headlamps
Units: About 322,000
Distributor: Petzl America, of Clearfield, Utah
Manufacturer: Petzl S.A., of Crolles, France
Hazard: If the headlamp is used with rechargeable batteries, the cable connecting the battery pack to the lamp can spark, melt, or catch fire. This poses a burn hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: Petzl has received 13 reports of sparking and/or melting, with 2 reports of flames. One consumer received a minor burn to the hand, and another experienced singed hair.
Description: This safety alert involves the “MYO” and “MYO Belt” headlamps with name and model numbers listed below. The “MYO” headlamps have a battery pack attached to the headband. The “MYO Belt” headlamps have a remote battery pack attached to the headlamp via a long electric cable.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using rechargeable batteries with the headlamps and contact Petzl to obtain a new warning label. Consumers can continue to use the headlamps with non-rechargeable batteries.

A few months back I reported about Timberland stopping manufacturing GoLite Footwear products and soon after, New England Footwear, a company led by Doug Clark - former Timberland’s employee – acquired the brand with the intention to re-launch it. At CascadeGear.com they have interviewed Clark about the direction of the new company, about the new line of trail shoes and also they take a look on the technology that made GoLite shoes so innovative – but not a hit in stores.

Their new Fastpak presented at the Outdoor Retailer Show wraps six Shot Bloks in a compact stack, which opens easily and enables runners to use just one hand to get the chews into the mouth. The new package is also 33% smaller and so makes it easier to carry in backpacks and pockets. The new Shot Bloks Fastpak will be available in stores by November.

Inov-8 showcased their new shoe model for this fall at the Kendal Outdoor Retail Show – one of the outdoor fairs in the UK. The x-talon 212 is an ultra-light trail shoe with quite some mid-sole cushioning, light mesh uppers and a sticky rubber outsole.

Other news from Inov-8 for the upcoming year is a couple of completely new shoes, three women-only models and the Flyroc 310 and Roclite 320 models getting a revision, amongst other.

The 2008 Summer Outdoor Retailer was held one more year in Salt Lake City this past weekend. As you know, this is the biggest outdoor show in North America (maybe in the world?) where all outdoor-related retailers exhibit their latest products, packing the convention center with booths of all types. Though I had an invitation to assist, my current work load didn’t quite fit with the show dates. So what I did is to follow the event through the official website and through many bloggers who were there and posted the odds and ends of their busy weekend. Below a brief recap on a few of the things which caught my attention, but I’m sure many other follow ups will be published in the upcoming weeks.

  • Polar RS800CX - the training management system from Polar is updated with GPS route tracking and multisensor compatibility

  • Autoseal bottle - Contigo has a patented a one-hand operation hydration bottle that automatically seals between sips (no cap to remove or spout to open) using a push-and-release button.

  • ZYM Catapult - a new hydration product that includes 100mg of caffeine and B12 vitamins that come in tablets that you’ll just have to pop in your hydration bottle to get electrolytes back in your system
  • Injinji Rainbow - introducing the revival of the classic Rainbow toesock in a new COOLMAX version
  • Petzl Ultra Line – several new headlamps from Petzl that allow the user to adjust the brightness according to the needs of the runner
  • New Marmot Jackets – Marmot introduced a new “2.5” version of their waterproof-breathable laminate, MemBrain, and two new jackets will come out with it next year: women’s Crystalline Jacket (with a weight of 6 oz.) and the men’s Mica at 6.5 oz.

The Gear Junkie has kicked off his new collaboration with Outside online with a review of an innovative headlamp from Petzl. The Petzl’s latest forehead-mounted LED lamp will inaugurate a new range of possibilities for this product category as it will incorporate a circuitry that will allow a light-level customization. Pressing the two lamp buttons simultaneously you get to a program mode where you can customize the brightness based on your needs. There are eight levels of brightness and three pre-set modes that will help you balancing between brightness and battery needs. The MYO RXP – that’s the headlamp name – will be available in January for $100.
