The article starts with Sam’s background and feats and move into a series of interesting questions on his personal and professional life. Here’s a snippet, but don’t miss the complete interview:

What inspired you to get into Adventure Running / Trail Running?
I have always had an inner drive to desire to go further and push my body farther, and it continues to drive me today. I started running cross country and track in high school and although I loved them, the distances just weren’t enough, so I started doing triathlons on the side. Then I moved up to road marathoning and eventually into the realm of 50k trail races and beyond. Now 100 mile races are definitely my favorite distance.

What has been your biggest sporting achievement?
Being the first person ever to run 51 marathons in all 50 states (plus D.C.) in 50 consecutive days is probably my biggest achievement to date, but not so much just because of the pure sport of it. I consider this my biggest sporting achievement because of the awesome positive effects I was able to generate through this run to aid the Gulf Coast hurricane victims.

What is you biggest weakness?
Coffee. No doubt about it- I can’t get enough of it. And living in Seattle certainly doesn’t help this addiction.

Done! Karl Meltzer completed his Appalachian Trail challenge on Monday, hiking the last mile to the top of Springer Mountain and ending at 4:20AM. Officially, he has been running for 54 days, 21 hours, and 12 minutes, completing the entire AT length of 2,174 miles, which makes it the fourth fastest thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. An early injury forced him to take some days off and so the record breaking attempt slipped out of this hands. But he was determined to finish the job and, once he recovered, he kept running at an amazing speed. It takes a great determination to know you won’t be able to reach your goal but keep going and running 40, 50 even 60 miles a day. It takes not just an extraordinary athlete but an out of the ordinary strong, unbreakable personality.

That was an amazing feat of one of the best ultrarunners out there. And we were able to follow him along the way. Thanks for sharing your accomplishment Karl and congratulations!!

From whereskarl.com, a list of fastest AT thru-hike finishers:

Pete Palmer: 48 days 20 hours 11 minutes (1999)
David Horton: 52 days 9 hours (1991)
Karl Meltzer: 54 days 21 hours 12 minutes
Scott Grierson: 55 days 20 hours 34 minutes (1991)

It’s been a while since I wrote about Karl Meltzer and his attempt to break the Appalachian Trail speed record. Although the record is now out of reach, Karl keeps running the trail to finish the grueling challenge he started on August 5th. Breaking the record was the goal but enjoying the trails with family and friends as crew was – and still is – too, so after an injury that forced him to rest for four days and hike with poles for another three, he begun running again. Karl himself summarized this part of the challenge here.

Since then Karl’s leg has improved – to the point of not hurting any more- and he has been cruising again. He usually starts his day early – between 4am and 5am –, has his breakfast prepared by a Backcountry crew member, and then packs and heads to the trail. Along the way, he has been encountering bears and snakes, horse riders and hikers – 157 “beards” -, has been running along with local runners, enjoying locals hospitality and crossing several states. He even made it to CNN news and also in a special on ABC27.

The Speedgoat has also taken some occasional falls and directions mix-up – one day, he run northbound for an hour and a half - and has been keeping the blisters taped, but no other major setback. Also, increasingly hot weather has been reported on where’s karl site but not too much rain since the initial week – rain that was the origin of his leg injury and forced days off.

His diet ranges from eggs, bacon and oatmeal to sandwiches, burgers, pasta, pizza or salads. He even had half a gallon of chocolate ice cream once. Anything goes to recover from the continuous effort of running an ultra every day. No need to mention that also in his diet are several sport nutrition products, like PowerBar gels, Nuun tablets, Ultragen and even some occasional Red Bulls.

Distances traveled vary each day, some days shorter than expected and others running more than planned. Distances vary between 20s and 50s – usually closer to 50s -, not usually according what was initially planned, but that also keeps the weekly contest – with prizes from Karl’s sponsors – interesting.

As any other endurance challenge, some days the ultra runner feels tired and in low mood, but he usually keeps his spirits up and enjoys the company of hikers and runners along the way (amongst them, Karl’s friend John DeWalt, a 13 Hardrock 100 finisher)

The crew has been following him with the RV with their own problems and situations: not having a spot to camp overnight, taking some wrong ways, re-fueling and always trying to find good internet connection spots to keep writing and uploading photos.

As for news for the last 3 days, Karl had to make a stop in a hospital for a check up on his feet. The raw spots on the back of his ankle and the top of his foot got a little infected so the doctor recommended him some antibiotics. But other than that, he is in good spirits and he even run a 60 mile leg yesterday. Also, as Karl’s feet were having a tough time fitting into his normal sized shoe, La Sportiva shipped a set of 10.5s and 11.5s at one of the post offices along the trail.

I’ll wrap up this post quoting Greg Goodson – a Backcountry’s member crewing Karl and currently posting on whereskarl.com - and I will come back on him later on, when he gets close to his goal (or any major changes occur). Keep running Karl!

Karl Speedgoat Meltzer is a great person filled with admiration for this trail and the highest respect for the record Andrew put down. I have seen a man walk out of here some mornings that almost brought tears to my eyes. It has not all been pretty to say the least. What he is doing is so far off most of our radar it’s impossible for me to communicate.

Now that Kilian Jornet has crushed the UTMB 2008 record, we will have to add another name to the list of great ultra young ultra runners.
