Born in and living in the surroundings of the EDM Mecca, the Dutch city of Amsterdam, Susana grew up in an open-minded place, surrounded with music. As a little girl, she used to sing along with her dad’s records, learning how to use her voice by mimicking the singers. At the age of 15, she decided to take things to a different level and explored her vocal abilities by taking professional singing lessons, followed by several live performances at her high school. Susana was getting to know various areas in music, singing in a rock/alternative band and taking vocal lessons in jazz and classical. Even though she still had the little girl’s dream to make it in music, Susana’s versatility and open mind had her travelling in South America for 5 months and grow a passion for anything related to its culture. Just as she was studying Latin American Studies, it turned out she was at the eve of her musical breakthrough.

1. What are some of your plans for 2012?

Susana: Release and promote my new album Brave, continue performing around the world and exploring other cultures, work on promoting and expanding the EDM market for vocalists, learn how to properly play the piano and simply keep on developing my singing and songwriting. In other words: keep doing what I love most and keep working on building a stable singing career.

2. What are some of the usual things you do in order to prepare for a performance?

Susana: It starts with deciding which tracks I want to perform, depending on the type of event, the location and the time I will be on stage. A lot of my tracks also have been remixed, so sometimes I might prefer to perform the original, sometimes one of the remixes. Over the years I’ve gotten more and more aware of which tracks work best for live performances. Then once I’ve made the selection I will get the set pre-mixed and I will start rehearsing it at home or during sessions with my vocal coach Kirsten, that means not only working on delivering the vocals but also on stage performance. All of this I usually prepare the week or days before travelling. Then a few hours before the actual show I will warm up my body and voice with some vocal exercises. They really help me to get into the right mindset and to ease my nervousness a little. Yes, even after all these years I still feel the nerves before going on stage! Probably because I am always a little worried about the sound. It’s something I cannot control once I am on stage, I have to put faith in the sound engineer. And to be honest it can be quite a challenge to sing live in an electronic dance music setting because not all venues are used to working with live singers. That’s why an important part of the preparation is to do a sound check, so I never skip those. Even it it means I have to fly in a day earlier.

3. When you perform on stage what are some of the thoughts and feelings that go through your head?

Susana: Those nerves I mentioned earlier are usually mixed with excitement, and this mix will transform into adrenaline the moment I step on stage. The on stage experience is hard to explain. I am, obviously, very focused on delivering the vocals. But I also find it very important to connect with the crowd through my performance. I like to get them to sing or dance along and I talk to the crowd a little bit as well a lot of the times. And besides all of this I also always stay focused on the sound, it’s so important to be able to hear myself well! So most of the times before going on stage, even if I did a soundcheck, I will discuss some hand signs with the sound engineer so I can communicate with them while I am on stage and for example find that I need a little bit more microphone sound through my in-ear monitors. So, as you can tell there’s a lot of stuff going through my head most of the time. Nonetheless, I love performing. And in the end I want to have a good time and I want the crowd to have a good time, after all that’s what Im there for!

4. Where are you currently residing, and do your surroundings inspire your lyrics? If so, in which ways.

Susana: I live in a small city in the Netherlands, called Leiden. Which is, coincidentally, the hometown of Armin van Buuren as well. When we recorded Desiderium 207 – the intro to his latest artist album Mirage – I went to his studio on my bicycle because it’s just 10 minutes from my house! Maybe even less. Leiden itself doesn’t really inspire my lyric writing. I am inspired by the people that surround me and my personal experiences, by music itself, by movies, … I guess you can say my biggest inspiration is emotion. Human emotion.

5. Where do you usually record your vocals?

Susana: I don’t have my own studio but I am fortunate enough to work with two EDM vocal producers who have their studio in Haarlem. A place not too far from where I live.

6. How experienced are you with vocal editing software and production software?

Susana: Not at all! I have a 4 track recorder at home that I use to record vocal ideas with but that’s all. I am non-technical person and that’s probably also why I’ve never really shown an interest to learn how to work with vocal editing and production software. Besides, I never really had to either because the producers I work with know the drill very well. I have a lot of respect for vocalists who do record their own stuff though.

7. What microphone is currently your favorite to use?

Susana: This is probably really bad for a vocalist to say but I have no idea!

8. Are you working on any new collaborations that you would like to inform us about?

Susana: Well currently I am not involved in any new collaborations because my album Brave is about to be released on Armada Music. On it you will find collaborations with Max Graham, Rex Mundi, Ernesto vs Bastian & Wezz Devall, Leon Bolier, Shogun, Beat Service, DNS project, Daniel Kandi, Aurosonic, Snatt & Vix and Ronski Speed. And as a kind of a bonus track I did an ambient version of Home for which I asked Eller van Buuren to deliver the guitar parts. Eller and I know each other from touring with the Armin Only show. We did a couple of hotel room sessions where we transformed trance songs into acoustic versions. Those sessions inspired me to invite Eller to work on this ambient version wit hus and I think it turned out beautifully!

Armin van Buuren feat. Susana presents Shivers

9. What advice would you give to an aspiring vocalist?

Susana: This is always a hard one. Because different roads can lead to a successful vocalist career. But what I know for sure is that talent alone is not enough, you have to be prepared to seize opportunities, work hard and also create opportunities where you can. This might mean you have to get out of your comfort zone a lot, which can be tough, and it’s ok to struggle a little with that, I went through that myself, but do it and you will see that fortune does actually favor the brave! Another important thing is to treat people the way you’d like people to treat you. Be genuine. Embrace creativity. And don’t rest on your success. Always keep developing yourself as a singer, songwriter, performer, artist, representative of your own brand or business etc. Cause really, to be a successful artist nowadays means to be all of that. And last but not least: never forget that you’re in it for the music and make sure to keep enjoying what you do!

10. Are you working on any other projects at the moment that you can tell us about?

Susana: I am very excited to announce that Audrey Gallagher, Betsie Larkin and myself will be involved in a project initiated by our booking agent JAM DJ Management. The project is called V2V and it will encompass branded live PA shows, global radio syndication, podcasts, online media and merchandising aimed at promoting and consolidating the currently growing market for vocalists in EDM. As a vocalist I have, obviously, always felt affinity with this cause. For a long time the EDM scene has mainly been the territory of (male) DJs and producers but over the past few years it has become clear that vocalists are gaining more and more popularity and respect as EDM artists. I think initiatives like the Armin Only Tour of Armin van Buuren have contributed to this development by bringing live artists on stage and showing the impact this has on crowds around the world. Also the rise of social media have made it easier for vocalists to profile themselves and connect with these same crowds. They have started to grow their own fanbases and the scene is picking up on this. And of course vocalists are consolidating this development by setting the right standards for themselves and branding themselves as solo artists. This is however still a work in progress though, so that makes me extra enthusiastic about the V2V concept. Starting June 2012 there will be a monthly V2V radioshow on Afterhours.fm which will be hosted in turns by Audrey, Betsie and myself. For those interested here’s a link to the V2V website where we will publish more detailed information soon on the official website.

Thank you for your time!

Susana: You are most welcome!

Release Date: 2012-05-16
Label: Flux Delux
Catalog: #FDELUXUA05

Since Matt Bowdidge burst on to the dance scene a little over a year ago he has been on a fast track to success delivering two stunning single releases and a superb remix of Sly one versus Jurranes single “Tayrona”.

Drafted in to mix his first album after only 4 months, it is fair to say that in a little over 12 months, Matt Bowdidge has achieved more than most producers achieve in a lifetime!

His latest single “No Room To Breathe” was his most eagerly awaited yet. As a result of an early track license to the excellent Future Sound of Egypt album series and associated support by Aly and Fila, the track also found itself on the main playlist of Armin Van Buuren’s ASOT radio show together with heavy rotation at ASOT 550.

All of this has set Matt up perfectly for his second compilation, Volume 5 of the prestigious Underground Anthems series.

The album mirrors one of Matt’s set perfectly as it moves through the gears starting with the blissfully anthemic “No Way Out” by Activa building towards its harder tech based conclusion.

Matt Bowdidge knows how to deliver in the studio and behind the decks.

UA5 is a musical journey, mixed to perfection by Matt who yet again, has delivered on every level!

Release Date: 2012-05-07
Label: Discover Digital
Catalog: #DISCDIG44

Matthew Dunne already has a number of releases to his name on labels that include Slinky, Vibrate Sounds and Club Educate to name just a few.

His style includes elements of progressive, tech and melodic trance blended perfectly to deliver his own unique sound and this is demonstrated superbly with Arctic Island.

Syncopated basslines, vocal stabs and layers of melody build seemlessly towards a lush pad driven breakdown which simply oozes emotion.

Adam Ashraf and Prajex complete the package delivering excellent interpretations with both remixers taking the track down a tougher route than the original whilst still retaining the edgy groove and key elements of the melodic content.

Thinking about youngsters nowadays and their fortune, you might not relate to someone in his late 20s, but if you think of someone that made a fortune in relation to EDM (Electronic Dance Music) – mostly Trance – and EMI (Electronic Music Industry) spectrum, ladies and gentleman, yes, I am thinking of Will Holland, the Enhanced Music’s owner. I can easily say that his label and music website competes with all major ones out there. With his dedication, hard work and commitment in particular- as he describes it in the interview – Will Holland created a musical imperium that can last for so long.

Having several exclusive interviews with him in the past, including this one, I can easily sense a level of professionalism merged with some of his own personality that shaped the man nowadays. It is no surprise for music minded people to realise that someone like him can do such a lot of things, since he is always driven by his all-time dedication to music. In this interview you are going to learn that Will Holland it’s here to stay for the long-run and I am pleased to see that dance music has someone like him in charge

1. Right now you have a new album compilation in stores called Digitally Enhanced, the 5th instalment already. With this album you have essentially brought together once more, some of Enhanced Music most prolific producers and, in a sense, paying tribute, to the vibe and energy that defined the label through the year. Please share some of the things that makes this compilation one of the most wanted albums of the year.

Will Holland: I think it’s about the artists on the release and the fact just about every track has never been heard before – it’s a principal we started with and have continued. We’re lucky to have some great artists at Enhanced and so many people are always dying to hear what they have coming up next, plus our hardcore fans are pretty fanatical indeed, and each year the hype seems to increase! Perhaps they like the mixes too?

2. So, with regard to the balance of themes you are touching on; to what degree would you say this album strikes a more Trancy tone as opposed to using certain elements of the past albums to describe, or perhaps, more vividly actualise, the present ?

Will Holland: Digitally Enhanced has always been about reflecting the Enhanced sound as a whole, across our labels, and I like the album to progress and build through the styles, so as usual it starts with the Progressive stuff and builds to the peak time Trance on the second disc. I think overall the sound is a bit more ‘clubby’ than the last edition, but that’s just reflective of what we’ve been doing on Enhanced over the last year.

3. In our previous interviews, I well remember that you mentioned how careful you were in selecting all of the artists that appear on Digitally Enhanced. From your own personal standpoint, as you went through the process of putting this album together, what were again some of the most important criteria that you employed in choosing the producers that actually contributed to this project ?

Will Holland: Yeah I want to try and include as many artists as possible; unfortunately it’s impossible given the time constraints on the CD and from a professional and personal view the mixes have to work and flow, so sometimes tracks however great they are just don’t make the cut. I had about 60 tracks that ended up at the 29 you have on the release!

4. If we look at the situation over the last few years especially, there have been some significant changes that have taken place. Especially with Enhanced. More and more producers are heading themselves into this world of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene. Which is a good thing by the way, but why is this happening ? What’s your take on this Will ?

Will Holland: I think a lot of Trance producers just became a little tired of the same sound and wanted to try something new, and at the same time other genre producers such as House have been taking influence from Trance as well as other genres and so on. It’s good because it’s opening up our music to people that have never heard it before and keeping things fresh from a musical point of view. Especially in countries like the USA you now have events where you have artists from all genres playing on the same stage – dance music is dance music, and if it’s good they’re into it. As long as artists produce for themselves and don’t try to chase a sound, and we as labels continue to release good music then I see no issue with it.

5. To date, you have released five albums of Digitally Enhanced. As an artist and label owner, how have you managed to stay so active and get your music out there for the fans ?

Will Holland: Haha, well to be honest my production has cut back because I spend so much time on the label, but I therefore try to make sure the tracks I do release are quality every time. It’s just about time management, and working farrrrrr to much, but when you love what you do it isn’t so bad!

6. Enhanced is home to many Trance legends and upcoming ones too. In your view, what does it take to reach that kind of acclaim ?

Will Holland: Talent, hard work and dedication. Working with people across the years you can see who has it and who doesn’t. Tritonal for example – they’re just nonstop; improving and developing their sound, making huge records, touring nonstop and developing their profile. They’re absolutely dedicated to being the best they can be and they absolutely deserve their success and that success has come about through all the work they have put into it.

7. Being the CEO of your own label as well as a producer and an artist, you obviously have a lot invested in the EDM scene, especially Trance; do you sometimes worry about what the future holds ?

Will Holland: I think Trance is in a very strong position at the moment, the scene is thriving in my opinion and a lot of the music being created at the moment is incredibly fresh. From a label standpoint piracy and sales are my concern.

8. If you were to collaborate someday with an artist from outside EDM spectrum, who would you like it to be ?

Will Holland: I would love to work with someone like Near The Parenthesis or Ulrich Schnauss; they’re incredibly talented and I love listening to music by them / artists like them, it soothes the soul.

9. Over the last three years you have continued to build your buzz by performing all over the globe as well as constantly releasing new music through your label; are you happy with your accomplishments thus far ?

Will Holland: Yeah I’m very happy with how things are going at the moment, personally and from a label standpoint, although I want to keep pushing things forward with Enhanced and see where we can get to.

10. As far as future projects, what do you currently have in the works ?

Will Holland: My next release is with Jeza, it’s the follow up to last years ‘Start Again’ and has a great remix by Beat Service. It’s out in a couple of weeks and the reactions so far have been amazing! It’s the opening track on CD One of Digitally Enhanced so check it out on there!

Governors Beach Club
Governors Island, NYC

Made Event is proud to announce DJ Mag Top 10 artist Dash Berlin at Governors Beach Club on Governors Island, NYC, Saturday, June 30, 2012.

Dash Berlin is the creator of the “Dash Berlin Sound” — an ambitious and unprecedented new sound of trance that is futuristic and scintillating, moving and emotive. It caught the ear of none other than Armin van Buuren in 2007, who featured Dash Berlin’s debut track “Till The Sky Falls down” on his legendary ‘Universal Religion’ album. In 2009, Dash Berlin released his critically acclaimed debut album, ‘The New Daylight,’ which features instant classics such as “Till The Sky Falls Down,” “Man On The Run,” “Waiting” and “Never Cry Again.” And last month saw the release of his second artist album, ‘#musicislife,’ featuring “Better Half of Me” (feat. Jonathan Mendelsohn), which earned a 2012 International Dance Music Award nomination for Best Trance Track. From the hottest nightclubs to the biggest festivals, this ‘Flying Dutchman’ connects with his audiences in a magical way that has spawned a worldwide following and earned him the #8 spot in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll. Now he comes to Governors Island to keep revelers dancing all day in the summer sun. After all, the message of Dash Berlin is simple: “It’s all about having a good time again,” he says. “The art of celebrating life resonates inside of everyone.”
