Let’s face it, in 2011, we live busy lives.  With work, children, and the day to day push-pull of responsibilities, each of us is overwhelmed.  And when you come home to a messy, disorganized home that just adds to the stress of an already packed weekend.  Are you already fed up with the mess when you open your closet doors?  Perhaps it’s time to re-organize your space with the help of transFORM.

Here is a step-by-step guide to organize your closets and reduce the stress in at least one part of your life:

Step 1

The very first thing can do is to remove everything from your closet. This will give you an idea of how big a space you have and what you might to do fix the organization problem. Once you see the entire empty space, you can begin to implement a plan.  Make a mental note on what you want to place in that closet, including clothing, shoes and other accessories.  While your closet is empty, take the time to also clean it. You can probably rub it down with a washcloth, soap and water. For a more enticing smell, you can use a scented liquid soap to clean your closet.

Step 2

Separate your underwear and socks, accessories and shoes.  You may want to rearrange these items based on the frequency you wear them. Make sure that each of your pieces are neatly folded or ironed. If you think something needs to be ironed, do not hesitate to do so. This will make your closet look much neater and more organized, not to mention the extra space you will have.

Step 4

It’s now time to put the items back in your closet.  You may want to use closet organizers from now on like clothes hangers, shelves, and shoe rack. Hang all your pants together, make sure your jeans go together and are separate from your business pants. Hang your other top wear like polo shirts, blazers, and coats, keeping similar items together.

Have those clothes that you frequently use placed on top of the others for easy access. Arrange your shoes in the shoe rack and place them below the hung clothes. You can put in small shelves in those extra spaces in your closet and place your underwear and accessories on separate levels.

If you have memorabilia that is clutter with value, consider donating it to someone who would use it and display it in their own home. Maybe a museum would appreciate some of the memorabilia, especially if it is antique.  Simplify your decor to reduce clutter and cleaning.

Before you consider your kitchen organization complete, remember the refrigerator.  People lose valuable time searching through their refrigerators because they don’t organize the contents.  It’s also a great way to end up with green moldy leftovers.  Instead, place leftovers in marked containers, with dates of storage.  That way you will never be disappointed or disgusted!

It will also help you see when an item is nearing time for replacement or a refill.   Using containers that are colored, pretty, easy to open, easy to identify, and that are within reach will appeal to you, your children and your guests.

Tip 1 – Ask yourself… who lives here?

By asking that question, we quickly gain power and leverage ourselves to get much better organized at home.  Try thinking of it this way… It is a recognized fact that when your home is tidy, your mood improves drastically.  An organized home also means greater confidence and self-assurance, something you find when you’re not spending large amounts of time looking for socks, underwear, and the like.

Tip 2 - Self-Image is key.

Your self-image effects how well your home is organized and vice versa.  If you view yourself as organized, you will be.  If you clean up and re-organize your home, you will be seen as someone who keeps things nice and tidy.  It’s the classic chicken or egg story.  If you have trouble here, go back to Tip #1.  Take a look at some of the transFORM products and accessories that may help you keep the clutter to a minimum:

Tip 3 - Don’t schedule your chores.

Housed in a former industrial factory more than six decades old, the transFORM Gallery boasts high ceilings, original windows that drink the natural light, and a spacious lofty quality.  Exhibitions organized by transFORM have encompassed all the visual arts: painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and, of course, the decorative arts.  In addition to producing its own exhibitions, the gallery also collaborates with classes from area schools to inspire creativity and to showcase some of the student works.

It comes as no surprise that the two founders of transFORM, Stuart Reisch and Andreas Messis, dedicate themselves to art and craft.   The two, have parlayed their respective design backgrounds – Messis comes from the world of theater and set design, while Reisch was a builder – into the creation of transFORM.   When Messis first conceptualized the transFORM showroom, he envisioned a space that had the look and feel of a gallery.  Thus, white-washed walls and a dark painted ceiling.  Reisch stresses both space and light, and one’s ability to capture that light and cast it inward to illuminate what is within the space, are so very important.  “Our goal at transFORM is to align art with light, in pursuit of that kind of brilliance.”

Take for example, the interior of transFORM gallery.  It is arranged into vignettes, where one can see how art fits into life, via the different rooms.  One vignette is the living area, where a wall accommodates a row of Ken Stabile photographs and several sculptures by Eric Camiel and Bernard Rowan.   In this way, patrons can visualize how to design rooms around a focal point or a great piece of artwork, while melding together concept, function and color.

Both owners believe that opening their gallery doors to art and to the community raises the collective consciousness.   They collaborate with artists and artistic organizations in an effort to facilitate support, recognition, and the exchange of ideas.  Reisch says, “Art transforms an ordinary life into an extraordinary one.”  Messis agrees. “This a wonderful opportunity for us.  We want our space to be seen as not only a showcase for transFORM products, but one that supports imagination and innovation, and through that, the community at large.”

Bernard Rowan Sculpture

The New Rochelle artist has been sculpting the human form from live models for more than 30 years.  Each of this figures, usually sculpted in stoneware clay, attempts to depict spirituality within physicality.   His concentration on essential form in terms of mass, plane and movement, has given the figures their own vitality.

Dear Stuart,

Coming from a customer service department of a major Wall Street firm, I am aware of the stress and issues associated in dealing with demanding customers from time to time. Many of the negative experiences are often magnified whereas the positive experiences are sometimes neglected. My recent experience with your staff for Transform was one of the more pleasant experiences I’ve had in working with a vendor. Due to the complexity of my home office needs, it is very infrequent to find idividguals who demonstrate such a professional & pleasant demeanor towards customers with ‘complicated’ design plans such as mine.

Howard Altabet, our designer was first and formost, extremely flexable in working with us. He was willing to meet with us during non-business hours, over two holiday weekends, take late night phone calls and offered to meet when ever an issue came up. The half dozen times that we did meet to finalize the plans were productive through our partnership.

I hope that your holidays were beautiful and not too hectic (who am I kidding?). Mine were wonderful as always but cooking in my new kitchen was a bit confusing. The kitchen came out amazing and is being entered in a “Best Westchester Kitchen” contest. How cool is that? Can you imagine winning? I’ll make sure that the photographer does not forget to take a pic of the pantry, which of course is the most beautiful aspect of the entire renovation! I loved working with you on designing the pantry. You made it so easy to bounce ideas around with and brainstorm the different looks that were possible for storing all the items I needed to store. The pantry has so much more space than I thought it would and I was able to put so much food, entertainment pieces, small appliances, and out-of-season items away and out-of-the-way forever. The pocket door takes up zero space and closes the pantry off when I want to hide all my “stuff”. The installer that you sent was excellent. He was professional, polite, and installed everything in just hours. I wish my whole kitchen could have been installed that easily! I am writing you about the best customer service I had received in years.

At the last minute, I found out about your company through friends of mine Scott Heller & Lynn Viscussi.  Tranform handle a big project for them at 100 East 16th Street. They showed me some of your closets in their apartments and I called right on the spot. I only had two more days in New York and needed an appointment fast so you  guys accommodated me. The sales girl that works with Scott & Lynn was on vacation so they sent me Daphna. Thank God because I can not imagine working with any one else!

Daphna came into my house and basically looked at my closets and knew exactly what to do. She took measurements, discussed the products, and explain why they were best for me. She went to a cafe around the corner drew up some plans with her ruler and her pencil and came back with architectural drawings. With these drawings she had transformed a big hole into a closet and suddenly the closets became real and understandable to me.  

By the time we were finished with our meeting almost four hours had passed and I didn’t even notice! Daphna has this special quality and demeanor about her that she made me feel as though I was hanging out with one of my friends or family members. How to Organize your Closet!

1. Try to create a balanced and visually appealing design. You’re investing your time and money….so be sure you like the finished product.

2. Determine how much of each clothing storage “type” you need (eg. hanging, folded, drawers). Our professional organizers recommend doing a detailed inventory….but who has the time. Just make a general estimate of what you use now, and note any deficiencies. For example: you have 10 feet of hanging space, but could use another 2 feet.

3. Don’t underestimate how much space you require for hanging clothes, and don’t plan too much area for long hanging. With today’s fashions most people don’t need more than 12 to 24 horizontal inches of long hanging space.

4. Locate drawers at the center of your closet design, directly across from the door so they are the first thing you see when entering the closet. Drawers make a good visual focal point and typically need the extra clearance provided by the central location. If you’re designing a large closet, include an island in the center of the space that incorporates your drawers.

5. Use the corners for hanging space not shelves. Corner shelves are usually too deep and folded clothes get lost. However, corners work well for hanging clothes where occasional use items can be moved to the back.

6. Leave ample vertical space between shelves for folded clothes. The minimum height is 8 inches, the maximum is 18 inches and the optimum height 12 inches. Too little height creates deep dark spaces and too much height wastes space and stacked clothes fall over.

7. Plan sufficient space for your shoes. If you have an average number of shoes you may be able to place them under the hanging clothes sections. Otherwise you should plan a full closet section for shoe storage.

8. Shoe shelves should be a minimum of 2 feet wide to accomadate two pairs sitting tandem. Wider shelves should increase by increments of 12 inches (or approximately one pair of shoes).

9. Make a space for your dirty laundry hamper. Keep in mind that you must tote that full hamper to your laundry room. Retractable hampers that slide on runners is an ideal system for most closets.

If your drawers are a hodge-podge of stuff, you can control the clutter with drawer organizers. These devices are simple fixes that subdivide your drawer space, create control from chaos, and make finding contents so much easier.

Drawer organizers

Do you have a junk drawer? Is your hosiery and sock collection overtaking your bedroom dresser? Perhaps you have a desk drawer containing tons of office supplies?  Don’t fret.  A drawer organizer can help you keep everything organized, so that the items inside can be retrieved in an instant.  Most are simple plastic organizers that can be slipped in a drawer, and used immediately–no tools needed.  Here are some of transFORM’s takes on drawer organizers.

Shoe racks or shoe cubbies

Shoes scattered on the floor in the closet or the mud room can look cluttered, and you’ll be spending extra time looking for your shoe’s mate.

Get yourself a good shoe rack or shoe cubbies. For shoes, we recommend shoe racks. But remember, when you’re looking for a rack, avoid those that are slightly slanted. Shoes without heels will not stay put on these types of racks. Look for flat racks that have a minimum of 2 shelves. Or, you may opt for shoe caddies that contain 9 to 12 squares to place your shoes.

If you don’t like it, toss it

One word here: simplify. A cluttered, chaotic environment breeds stress and frustration. If you don’t love it and/or you don’t use it, you know it’s clutter.  Get rid of your clutter and lighten your load. As you do, you’ll be reducing stress and feeling a sense of calm.

Put a Sock in It

Tired of your sock and/or hosiery drawer looking like a disorganized mess?

You can use plastic baggies to organize.  Simply put one pair of socks (or tights or pantyhose) into each plastic bag.  You can even stick a label on the outside of each bag which will help you easily distinguish black socks from blue socks, or casual socks from dress socks.  Then, just line up the baggies in your drawer, keeping all black socks together, all tights together, etc.  Or you can use one of these products from transFORM.

Outer-wear everywhere

Why do hats, gloves, scarves, coats and other outer-wear often get tossed on top of sofas or chairs? One of the main reasons is that there’s no designated storage area for these items. You may say that the closet should serve this purpose, but can your closet effectively do the job?

Go through all the outer-wear and be sure everything you have is worn regularly. Have enough hangers in the closet–one hanger per item. It’s not efficient or effective to hang a jacket over another jacket, because of a shortage of hangers. Install hooks or pegs along the closet wall for items like hats, scarves, backpacks, dog leashes and umbrellas.

Place small items, like mittens or gloves, in clear, plastic bags. Then, label each bag with a family member name and hang it on a hanger–one bag per family member.  Conversely you might want to find wire or wooden cubbies that hold all that extra stuff.

Once you organize your drawers, the only thing left will be making sure everyone knows about the new systems you’ve devised, understands them and adheres to them.

But here’s the thing… if you’re one of those people whose shoes always end up in a pile at the bottom of the closet, then you could get a closet organizer system that addresses foot wear. There are organizers that let you hang your shoes off the inside of the closet doors to increase space usage. You could also spruce up the bottom of your closet with other organizer units such as stackable floor shelving or portable drawers.  These units are just some of many floor units that can turn the bottom of your closet into an organized space.

There are plenty of options depending on your needs.  For sorting out clothes, several hanging bar options are available. You can get rid of that old single bar that spans the width of your closet and instead opt for a multi-bar unit that caters to long clothing on one side and multi-levels of short clothing, like slacks and skirts or shirts.  Simple shelves can be replaced with sliding shelves to allow you to stack clothing to the depth of your closet space and still be accessible.

A closet organizer is a wonderful invention, revolutionary for both pack rats and neat freaks.  So, what exactly is a closet organizer?  It is a set of shelves, hooks, racks, boxes, and storage bins that transform a closet from a dark haven of chaos to a bright, organized space where everything has a place.  Closet organizers can be a mixture of accessories, however, you can usually find entire kits, sold with matching shelves, racks and bins that fit together neatly and easily.

While each closet generally has a hanging bar for hanging clothes, most closets have only one shelf, set inconveniently above the clothing rack. A good closet organizer will shorten the clothing rack, raise it to make room for a second rack below, and add shelves along one side of the closet. The original shelf above the closet can either be raised or even doubled and used for storage. Objects used every day can be placed on the lower shelves.

Below the double clothing rack, a shoe rack is a convenient accessory that keeps the closet floor clear of shoes and spic and span.  It also makes for easier cleaning.  Many closet organizers include shelves with built-in storage bins that slide in and out like drawers. Other non-attached storage bins may be placed on the side shelves, above the clothing racks, or on the floor next to the shoe rack. If the closet door is a sliding door on a frame, often smaller shelves, bins or racks can be attached to the inside of one of the doors for added space. If the door opens out into the room, several hooks can be attached, or perhaps you might prefer a hanging shoe organizer.

The ideal closet organizer will also include a light. Even the most efficiently organized closet is still a dark place with little or no outside lighting.

Definition:

The closet, through French from Latin, clausum, or closed began life in the 17th century as a small private room, often behind a bedroom, to which a man or woman could retire for privacy, reading, or enjoyment of personal works of art.

A closet (especially in North American usage) is a small and enclosed space, a cabinet, or a cupboard in a house or building that is used for hanging clothing or general storage. A closet for food storage is usually referred to as a pantry. In current British usage, a wardrobe can also be built-in, and the word cupboard can also be used to refer to a closet.  In Elizabethan and Middle English, closet referred to a larger room in which a person could sit and read in private, but now refers to a small room. In Indian usage, a closet often refers to a toilet. This probably originated from the word water closet, which refers to a flush toilet.

In America prior to World War II, chests, trunks and wall-mounted pegs typically provided storage.  Built-in wall closets were uncommon and where they did exist, they tended to be small and shallow. Following the end of the war, however, deeper, more generously sized closets were introduced in new housing designs, which proved to be very attractive to buyers. It has even been suggested that the closet was a major factor in peoples’ migration to the suburbs.

Modern closets can be built into the walls of the house during construction so that they take up no apparent space in the bedroom, or they can be a large, free-standing piece of furniture designed for clothing storage, in which case they are often called a wardrobe or armoire. Closets are often built under stairs, thereby using awkward space that would otherwise go unused.
